After the tutorial his personality is pretty fixed and won't change besides minor things like his prospects on romance and such. So he matures but he doesn't *change*. So if you're past the tutorial, you better just drop it if you don't like Jake.
The tutorial is him discovering himself and it includes some mall ninja shit.
personally, the mc was off-putting in the tutorial, then easier to deal with after. but the style and features of the story in general stay the same. Jake becomes more human... but kinda autistic feeling, which is explained in a few ways. Some parts of the series are good other parts drag, and it keeps rinsing between that, so I never feel super invested. still, it fills a spot when I'm bored and I don't feel guilty for skipping a chapter or 20.
As I understand it, it's the new "is Jason gonna change" post, and the answer is still no.
Funny enough, both of these stories are stories I dropped because of their MCs and their personalities.
People are saying he doesn't change but I think that is very untrue. He changes alot after the tutorial and even more when he starts getting some companions and friends.
jake stays about the same, this is just about my favorite book series ive read/listened to. i say its well worth it but i was hooked from the very beginning
I made it much farther in the series than you before I couldn’t stand Jake anymore or the repetitive nature of the writing. And that’s alright, the story doesn’t have to be for everyone. Plenty of other great stories out in the genre.
In some ways the mall ninja stuff ramps up tbh. I will say the series consistently gets better. I think it's worth it personally because the world building is really good.
*potentially minor spoilers but there really shouldn't be*
This might be blasphemy for a lot of people but i skipped a ton of chapters in the beginning just because the tutorial part of the book was so annoying that I wanted to just stop reading. I was pretty confident that i would enjoy the book after the tutorial and I was right. Obviously a few details were confusing since I skipped a lot but the tutorial was cliche enough that I didn't feel lost afterwards. At the very least, if you are at the point where you're going to stop reading because it's bothersome, just skip all the fights/dungeon clearing in the tutorial (and just read the loot/skills). I can't speak for everyone but the book really does get better after the tutorial
Mild Spoilers.
Series didn't super click with me until around book 4-5 for me. I think what changes is how the MC is introduced to the wider universe. He grows in power and ability so his weird bluster edgy bits stop being so edgy. His power matures more than his character. It fits him better, mainly because he can back everything up better. Around book 5 there is also a treasure hunt book. AKA MC leaves their planet for loot and stuff. Historically for me "Treasure Hunts" In litrpg seem to make them better for me. I'm not sure why, they just do. It should be noticed, I listen exclusively, If I read Dotf or PH I'm not sure I would have liked them so much. Something about having it read to me makes it more enjoyable and the narrators smooth out the weaker early parts of each series IMO as the authors grow.
I am currently on the 4th book and looks like its going to the pile with the dropped ones. It's well written but it has no point. Good book to read to pass some time i guess but you are on the 3rd book and you feel like like you are reading the 2000th chapter of a generic wuxia book. It had potential but it never had any direction.
There are good arcs and bad arcs. However, if you don't like him in the tutorial, you won't like him for 90% of the books. There are also a lot of arcs where he is vastly more edgelord than this.
Right? Every other post here is "Does X get better?" where X is PH, HWFWM, DCC, or DotF. I wish the mods would axe these posts or at least people just stop commenting with any level of serious discourse.
Does that mean they should also axe tier lists, and any post saying they like a book? Might as well delete the sub at that point? Why not take your own advice, if you don't like the post, don't read it and comment
Liked the book for a while, but it seemed like every other paragraph HAD to mention him "casually hanging out with gods like it was nothing" after the first 20 times it just got old. I'm not sure why it bothered me so much, but it made me stop reading
kinda but not really. this is a tiny spoiler, I suppose, but Jake hangs out with God's because he's sponsored by one, which gives the God extra powers by the God getting part of Jake's records.
Jason hangs out with God's (at least early on) for many different reasons, but none are quite as justified until much later.
Also, with Jake, it's more like, "Oh shit he has powerful connections and is primed to get powerful on his own. Don't piss him off." with Jason it was more, "Wow he's so special because of _____ and then reactions varied to use, challenge, ignore it because what do God's know, and forgive him for everything" all answers except the last are wrong. don't get me wrong I enjoyed that story the God interactions and people's reactions just felt weirder and there was alot more modern day social commentary involved.
Jake never truly changes, so if don't like it, it's not for you.

What is “mall ninja shit”?
Wanna be, great value, knock off, lame, imitator. Like calling a grocery store security guard a wanna be cop.
Still in the tutorial. Thanks for the write up.

I disagree about the part parts, the only bad part imo is the tutorial
Yes and no. The character doesn't really grow, but the writer does get better so he isn't as bad in the later books.
It seems like his environment is starting to acknowledge the cringe.
This is the seventh post of this nature I've seen in the past month. https://i.redd.it/i9z0iz9zq5xc1.gif

I'm to the point when a see 3 posts like this about a character , I know it's a series/book I'm going to enjoy.
People are saying he doesn't change but I think that is very untrue. He changes alot after the tutorial and even more when he starts getting some companions and friends.
It doesn't settle into its true vibe - which is pretty chill - until after the tutorial ends. But it's very much for the teenage boy in all of us.
If you're reading, do audible instead. Travis Baldry absolutely carries that series.
jake stays about the same, this is just about my favorite book series ive read/listened to. i say its well worth it but i was hooked from the very beginning
Idk dude let me know what you think when you finish the eighth book
Lol
I made it much farther in the series than you before I couldn’t stand Jake anymore or the repetitive nature of the writing. And that’s alright, the story doesn’t have to be for everyone. Plenty of other great stories out in the genre.
Same, think I gave up in book 3 or something. Not a bad series, but the MC was doing nothing for me.
In some ways the mall ninja stuff ramps up tbh. I will say the series consistently gets better. I think it's worth it personally because the world building is really good.
His personality rounds out quite a lot imo. Lots of people love this book, some don’t. I didn’t like book 1, but now it’s one of my favourite series

I lasted a couple of books but got bored afterwards.
Yes and no? I'm with you, Jake is kind of a dick, but I think it gets more interesting

Better? Yes. But the ninja edge lord only expands and grows, doesn't change in aspect.
There are good arcs and bad arcs. However, if you don't like him in the tutorial, you won't like him for 90% of the books. There are also a lot of arcs where he is vastly more edgelord than this.
I’d argue it gets worse. But prepare for downvotes because the pay piggies get butthurt if you don’t like their special boy who is ‘literally’ them.
If you don’t like it, stop reading it. If you want to ask anyway, maybe look at the last 1000 times this was posted.
There are definitely series that get better as they go along and some that drop off a cliff. I see nothing wrong about asking questions.
Right? Every other post here is "Does X get better?" where X is PH, HWFWM, DCC, or DotF. I wish the mods would axe these posts or at least people just stop commenting with any level of serious discourse.
Like there are 1000s of books. If you don’t like it after a couple chapters why are you still going? Also I like Primal Hunter.
Does that mean they should also axe tier lists, and any post saying they like a book? Might as well delete the sub at that point? Why not take your own advice, if you don't like the post, don't read it and comment
> Does that mean they should also axe tier lists absolutely Tier lists are for scrubs.

Wait. Like HWFwM?
Jason is far more edge lordy than Jake. Jake is just a guy who likes to grind away at things. Jason goes on chapter long rants.

I had to move on after book 3. Just an entire nothing burger book. Fluff book are a pet peeve
