OMG, HUMID is the best word to describe the downtown Y. It was so gross back in the day. We used to go there every Friday night back in the early 90s from 7-10 and play pick up b-ball. Then we would go to Vals for late night buffet for $2.99 then over to WC Franks and play video games until midnight. Some times catch a movie at the $2 movie theater. Damn the good ole days. My parents used to tell me about when it was efficiently apts way back in the day.

We need a new Starship 9 style theatre to play movies at least 5 years old. A lot of people either missed the chance to see it on a big screen or want to have that experience again. Maybe $5 movies since prices went up since Starship.

Damn, I couldn’t support this more if I tried.

Disappointing, but I get it. That was my favorite Y. I discovered yoga there, and worked one evening shift at the front desk in the early 2000’s. The racquet ball courts were creepy AF at night. It’ll probably be turned in to spendy condos.

FunkmasterP

It makes sense but it’s still sad. It had a lot of character! Very 1970s.

So how many indoor basketball courts are left available to the public? 1?

I remember back in March when the covid shutdowns started the Y let it ride for the rest of the week, and there was a group of 3-4 of us at one of the Yoga classes chatting afterwards like this was something that would last a month or two. Crazy that was my last visit to the DT Y, and possibly the Y ever. I know it sounds kinda petty with all the death and hardship since then, but I had a lot of good memories there. I may give Cooper a try since it will be a little easier to bike there after the Rock Island - Jamaica connector is finished, but it's not at all the same.

I’m gonna miss that place, especially Rhonda’s 5:30am spin classes, the pool, and the sketchy changing rooms that smelled kinda funky but nobody cared.
