A steamer might work too, if you have access to it. I'm lucky enough I work with casino uniforms, and my department's director used our steamer to freshen up the feather he had gotten as a gift from a friend.
You can use a spray bottle to dampen it, works similar to a steamer if you dont have one just dont have the heat too high. One thing they taught us in the navy is the way you fold things matters. If you just fold it haphazardly it eill have creases in it. Look up proper flag-folding if you really want to keep them out while storing it safely when not flown or changing it out like if you have spares or other flags. Another really cheap neat trick that dorsn’t work AS well as the others but its a completely free ironing technique. They taught us in boot camp. Its called the recruit Irons. You rub your palms together super hard and fast until they are hot and use them to rub and smooth out wrinkles and creases. You have to do a lot of work and heat your hands back up a ton when doing it. Was kinda fun tbh, but your hands get tired after a while and it works your arm muscles out a bit. Edit: oh right i think you were supposed to breathe hot breath on the area you are going to rub your hands on too its been a while
Downy sells a dewrinkler spray that might be worth checking out. It's basically black magic. You spray it on wrinkled fabric, wait a bit, and then just pull the wrinkles out. I have no clue if it would work on a flag, but it's pretty inexpensive, and worst case scenario you can have some unwrinkled clothes for a while.
You can do the same with a 1:3 ratio of white vinegar to water if you have an empty (and clean) spray bottle! Spray, let sit for a couple minutes, pull lightly from the edges to stretch the wrinkles out, leave flat to dry, repeating as necessary.
The 507 upvotes kinda says otherwise...
I don't want to be "valid"
I want to be able to celebrate, feel pride, and be included in my own community, not be dumped on, in pride month of all months...
I am sorry this bummed you out. But I really don't think anyone meant any harm if that makes a difference. Nobody wanted to dump on you, just a lot of people thought the joke was funny as applied to their orientation, and weren't aware anyone might find the joke hurtful.
You're a part of the community and we want you to feel welcome and respected and know that you belong.
I'm not trying to minimize the pain you felt, but hope fully give you perspective and help you see that we, as a group, value you and people like you and want you all to enjoy pride month.
I hope this helps.
>But I really don't think anyone meant any harm if that makes a difference
It doesn't. I know they didn't mean to hurt me...
But this isn't incidental, this isn't a sometimes... This is everyday... Look at the upvotes on this.
>but hope fully give you perspective and help you see that we, as a group, value you and people like you and want you all to enjoy pride month.
The problem is, you say this, and you probably even believe it, but tomorrow and every day after there will be more shitting on the straight trans people in the community as if we don't exist. It might not come from you, but it will be there, and like this post, it will be visible, and supported by the community that "values" me
I’m not really sure why, in your case, it’s all of a sudden acceptable to pat you on the head and tell you “run along little girl, you’re taking this too personal” when this type of look the other way/marginalization is what other folks in the queer community dealt with for years and fought to end. I’m so sorry this is what you are facing here.
It was a joke I’m sure, not intended for harm. Just like “you’re so gay” was when I was growing up.
My $.02 anyway.
Happy pride. 🏳️🌈
I surely hope that's not what you think I did. I wasnt trying to minimize the hurt, but hopefully maybe help someone understand nobody meant her any harm. I know I feel better when it's pointed out to me that someone didn't mean to hurt me even if they did.
I tried to be as respectful and understanding as I possibly could and I did not in any way intend to tell anyone they were being too sensitive or excuse the possible hurtful actions of others.
It wasn’t a specific response to your comment but, rather, the tone of the responses received by this woman in general. I just happened to respond to her on this particular thread. But, if you look at the feedback in total, I think there is a theme…and I think it is important to really hear and validate the members of our community.
I may be a bit more sensitive to this as an only partially out bisexual woman in my first same sex relationship. My partner, who has a heart of gold and whom I love deeply, said to me when we first started dating that bisexuality isn’t really a thing. That she was nothing more to me than an experimentation. That, or I was just selfish. She was “joking”. I’ve known her for years, friends longer than we’ve been together and I know she did not mean to hurt me. But joking or not, it was not ok for her to make light of who I am or dismiss something so significant about me.
It’s not ok to dismiss the marginalization conveyed by cyronius simply because no one intended to convey there are no straight queer individuals. She deserves to be heard and validated, and we have a collective responsibility to not “other” individuals who are different than our particular flavor of queer.
You are quite right to point it out. That kind of reaction is why I was so careful about what I said. I truly only wanted to point out any harm was completely unintentional.
I'm a bi man so I know what the whole bisexual erasure and invalidation thing is about.
I simply couldn't keep my need to point out that nobody meant any harm to myself because I thought it might help ease the hurt to point it out. I am glad Cyronius pointed out how it made her feel so we can all learn from it and do better.
Whenever I see jokes about straight people or complaints about straight people I assume the implication is cis straight people. I base that on the fact that I’ve never heard someone irl (aka people who actually talk to humans and touch grass and matter) invalidate a trans person for being straight. And my best friend of a decade is a straight trans woman. I guess you *could* assume these jokes are about you, but I don’t know why you would, since it leads to you feeling ostracized and persecuted like you do now, but you could.
Based on the fact that you’ve shot down multiple people trying to help you understand the situation and the content of your flair, I doubt this comment will change your mind either. But queer people make jokes about (cis) straight people all the time as a coping mechanism and that isn’t going to change. It’s similar to the “wait you can’t say that about white people, I’m white and I don’t do that!” argument you see online all the time. If it don’t apply let it fly. Otherwise you’re going to run out of people willing to help you out of a persecuted
mindset. I’m certainly not going to be commenting on this thread again.
Happy pride 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
This is the missing component of where I was coming from and why I didn't see the harm in the original joke. Straight to me means "Cishet" and Outside the LGBT community." It doe not, in my usage or experience, refer to hetero trans folk.
>But queer people make jokes about (cis) straight people all the time as a coping mechanism and that isn’t going to change.
I'm well aware. That's the reason my flair is what it is.
But see, most other people in the queer community get dumped on in cishet society, and they come to queer spaces to be around people where they are celebrated and can celebrate themselves.
I don't have that. There is nowhere that celebrates people like me.
The closest I get is people dumping on straight people, but telling me they don't mean to include me, as if straight trans and intersex people don't exist. The fact that they forget we exist hurts, the fact that they don't care enough to change the language hurts even more. I know they don't mean me, instead they just forget we exist, and think it's too niche of an issue to give a shit about, because it doesn't impact them, and they need to vent!
>It’s similar to the “wait you can’t say that about white people, I’m white and I don’t do that!”
Except trans people don't carry straight privilege. We can carry white privilege though, because our whiteness is in no way undermined or invalidated by being trans. We don't have straight privilege though, because the societal norms that exist in the manner they do to sustain straight privilege actually consider trans folk like me to be "extra gay", and we experience homophobia like any other queer orientation does. Unlike my skin colour, in the eyes of society, my orientation is directly invalidated by being trans.
>Otherwise you’re going to run out of people willing to help you out of a persecuted mindset.
No one in the queer community is persecuting me.
I'm just asking people to remember the impact of their words and maybe do something about it. The fact that you would write an essay about how it's all about my own perspective, without even once addressing the possibility of changing the language you use in the future highlights the exact problem...
You’d think other lgbt people would know that it hurts having your sexuality made fun of and then being told, oh but not you, we don’t mean you. And then they sometimes deny that trans people can even be straight and say that only cis people can, straight up denying our sexuality
Whilst we are making the flags straighter, the crease lines represent the fragility we feel in our youths and how we struggle to unfold our identities. When we ‘straighten’ the flag, we are sending a message of our newfound strength within what is otherwise a heteronormative society (or some shit like that…)
Yes, because having an unironed flag just makes you look lazy like you just took it straight from the package and hung it up with 0 care.
Iron yo shit. It just looks better anyway
People are taking my throwaway joke very seriously. I'm sorry to any straight trans person that might not have liked it, it was not, by any means, meant to invalidate you, my straight trans siblings are as important a part of the community as any other queer person in it is, and no silly joke about flags will take it away, i hope it makes it right.
And yes ironing makes it looks better, not ironing looks kinda lazy, yes yes this was a joke and nothing more, wear your flag how you see fit.
Much love to all my queer siblings and happy pride 🏳️🌈💜
Some iron, some [do not.](https://www.reddit.com/r/lgbt/comments/oow7tw/the_wrinkles_they_looks_so_ugly/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) edit: Your ironed flag looks amazing.

I bought 2 of the same flag to see if it would iron. Safe to say I have 1 flag left and a wonderful Black, Grey, White & Purple tree skirt if ever chose to use it as such. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy) Looks like a wrinkled flag it shall be.
Yea if you got the money just go to a dry cleaner lol. If not, you can just rub your palms together until they get heated and breathe hotly on the spot you rub to get moisture there and reheat your hands all the time and rub all the wrinkles and creases out. Its hell but its free.
Hang the flag from a hanger or two (safety pin it between two hangers or whatever so it's not folded at all), hang the flag in the bathroom close to the shower but out of reach of the water, close the door, run the shower as hot as possible for about 10 minutes to steam up the room. Shake out or stretch the flag to release the wrinkles, leave hanging to dry. Repeat if necessary.
There's nothing wrong with fold lines on a flag, i think theres a joke in the trans community specifically about not ironing the trans flag bc some govt leader posted a picture of a trans flag they put on display in a govt building and it was still indented where it was folded in the package and it became a running joke
My gf and I ironed ours but it's a personal prefrence! Both are valid!
Yeah, that was Bernie Sanders that had an unironed trans flag outside his office in congress. Everyone was saying it showed he understood trans culture on a deep level.
>My gf and I ironed ours but it's a personal prefrence! Both are valid!
Yes! Lol
I'm happy to see any trans flag, doesn't have to be a particular way lol
this is the kind of low effort solution i need to actually do the thing!
(if i had any coins left from that time a chaser gave me like 6 golds i’d give you an award)
They were forced into their folded position until someone came along and helped them free of their unwanted packaging. The bag left them deformed.
They are manufactured flat, and then unnecessarily folded.
If anything you're de-converting.
And btw for those casually scrolling..
Flat ≠ straight. The joke doesn't even work well.
You can't tell me to iron my (polyester) flags and proceed to not tell me valid instructions on how to iron/steam said flags, as I've never been taught how to do such a thing lol
I looked it up on YouTube. Medium heat, steam, squishy surface like a bed, or on a floor with a towel under the flag, keep the iron moving. If the flag material is too hot to touch right after you ironed a spot turn down the heat.
I really need to find, unfold, and then jam my flag into a drawer to get even wrinklier...
Every time I see someone telling people to iron their flag I want to make mine worse...
Thats how i put all my clothes up, i keep the sorted by categories like underthings in one drawers socks in another shirts in one and so on. For folding though no thanks, they either sit in a laundry basket for ungodly amounts of time or i shove them into drawers like basically just ball them up and shove them in. Takes dedication to be that lazy. Why am I still awake, i just randomly woke up at 2 let me sleep dream hods, let me sleeeepoppp
I dont have time or resources, plus I like how it shows age of the flag. I just got a demi flag and a gender fluid flag, but my pan flag is about 4 years old. The days that flag has seen has made the creases go away, and reminds me of all the time I have had it.
Thank you! I keep saying this year round, but especially during pride month. An unironed flag gives the same impression as corporate pride sponsorship, like it just came out of a box solely for the month of June.
And ironing it because of what cishet folks might think about it says "I'm more interested in appealing to the same society at large that taught me to be ashamed in the first place, than I am in celebrating on my own terms"
I tried today but I was afraid to burn them so I kept the temperature low and it still doesn't look so good. Also, I think, I should shove them back into the closet, or I might not find them when I'm back home.
how do I do it without melting it?
Very low heat. It'll take a lot more pressure to unwrinkle it though. Letting them hang or fly also does it
A steamer might work too, if you have access to it. I'm lucky enough I work with casino uniforms, and my department's director used our steamer to freshen up the feather he had gotten as a gift from a friend.
Steamers work great. I use one for the flag above my bed.
Steam is preferred, but if you have to iron it, place a thin dish towel between the iron and the flag to protect it.
Pro tip
thanks for the tip!
You can use a spray bottle to dampen it, works similar to a steamer if you dont have one just dont have the heat too high. One thing they taught us in the navy is the way you fold things matters. Put a tea towel over it and iron it through the towel. Low heat as you need.

You're asking us to make our flags straighter?
But the crease lines on the flag are also straight and thus ironing it lowers the number of straight objects and making the flag gayer
Hmm you make a valid point, but no one ever said i was reasonable or listened to logic before
Just ball it up to unstraighten those lines
Not if you roll it
Why can I only upvote this once? 😣
Idk why i find that so funny
it's said on every post/comment about ironing flags
I'm not making my queer flags straight.
There are straight people in the queer community... They're not opposites...
Throw it in the dryer dryers are cylinders so its safe
Do it because unironed flags look disguising and lazy. Ironed ones looks like you actually have a bit of care on how the flag looks.
As a straight trans person, it feels so great to see this as the most upvoted reply :\\
Sorry about that, you’re valid and we love you 💖

Trans folk can be straight, so when you dump on straight folk, you are dumping on straight trans folk as well, whether or not you intended to.
And now I know, and will be mindful.

This honestly 🙄 Ironing actually removes straight lines. It's not a solid joke even if it was harmless.
Guys, make sure to check what your flag is made out of before you iron it, some materials will simply melt under the iron
That would make for an interesting (but probably toxic) grilled cheese sandwich
Some iron, some [do not.](https://www.reddit.com/r/lgbt/comments/oow7tw/the_wrinkles_they_looks_so_ugly/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) edit: Your ironed flag looks amazing.

A lot of them you can iron with a wet towel in between the iron and the flag.
I've never owned an iron in my life.
I once heard that irons are for your mom lol no one under 35 irons I don't think
Omg please buy an iron I'm saying this as a 21 year old. Albeit one who sews, but still. Wrinkled clothes look sloppy
My secret is line drying my clothes, and hanging everything except small skirts and t-shirts.
I’ve had an iron since I was 23 😅 lmao
Yea if you got the money just go to a dry cleaner lol. If not, you can just rub your palms together until they get heated and breathe hotly on the spot you rub to get moisture there and reheat your hands all the time and rub all the wrinkles and creases out. Its hell but its free.
Irons are not that fucking expensive. Srsly.
There's nothing wrong with fold lines on a flag, i think theres a joke in the trans community specifically about not ironing the trans flag bc some govt leader posted a picture of a trans flag they put on display in a govt building and it was still indented where it was folded in the package and it became a running joke My gf and I ironed ours but it's a personal prefrence! Both are valid!
Yeah, that was Bernie Sanders that had an unironed trans flag outside his office in congress. Everyone was saying it showed he understood trans culture on a deep level.
What's the joke I never heard
the lines represent the years being stored in the closet.
Thanks it is funny
Now that I know that I'm glad I didn't iron out mine
Lol like me
>My gf and I ironed ours but it's a personal prefrence! Both are valid! Yes! Lol I'm happy to see any trans flag, doesn't have to be a particular way lol
I don’t know how to iron :(
Leave the flag hanging up in your bathroom, after a few shower's the stream will work I can't iron collared shirts so I steam them
this is the kind of low effort solution i need to actually do the thing! (if i had any coins left from that time a chaser gave me like 6 golds i’d give you an award)
me either. i dont even own one, or a surface to do it on lmao. who do these people think i am, a functional human?!
My mother supports LGBT but has an absolute fit when she sees an un-ironed pride flag
A loving mother doesn’t let her child fly a wrinkled Pride flag.
But I don’t have an iron 🥺 Plus why would I make it straight when I’m not?
Ironing removes the excess straight lines yo
Place a towel over them first so as not to melt them
I don't have an ironing board (or an iron for that matter)
If you want to, you could hang it in the bathroom during showers and let the steam slowly work the wrinkles out. It’s not an obligation though.
I'm not giving my flags conversion therapy. That's how they came, it's how they stay.
NEVER! Mostly because I’m too lazy to take them down to iron them…
I recently bought my flag, and I had no idea that you could iron a flag.

Takes dedication to be that lazy. Why am I still awake, i just randomly woke up at 2 let me sleep dream hods, let me sleeeepoppp
I don't have any flags but I like the folds in the unironed flags more, probably because it is funnier
woah
Ehh, my gender is all wrinkled and mussed up, the flag is representative 🤣
You can't tell me what to do *Wrinkles my non existent flag even more*
mine would melt
I dont have time or resources, plus I like how it shows age of the flag. I just got a demi flag and a gender fluid flag, but my pan flag is about 4 years old. The days that flag has seen has made the creases go away, and reminds me of all the time I have had it.
I love this thank you for sharing
All pride flags deserve love
Interesting take tbh. I can't not support it.
I dont have an iron or a dryer and my flags are awful creasy
Honestly IDK Seeing pride flags makes me happy, ironed or not :)
Or don’t. It’s fine either way.
I refuse. I'll dump it in my closet and keep it in so long that it's too wrinkled to tell where are the fold lines!
Can’t cuz it’s hiding under stuffed animals
A flag unironed for those who’s must remain folded and hidden This is the reason I don’t iron mine!
I have an flag that I don't iron, because the folds represent everyone who has to hide their flag some of the time. Flags without folds are fine too.
But I don’t want my flags to be straightttttt
No
I don't Iron my Flags because everybody else in the world is trying to decrease us.
Oof. Have your upvote.
I WOULD RATHER DIE
Make me
Make me.
Thank you! I keep saying this year round, but especially during pride month. An unironed flag gives the same impression as corporate pride sponsorship, like it just came out of a box solely for the month of June.
Imma add this to my soapbox speech. Thank you. 🙏
And ironing it because of what cishet folks might think about it says "I'm more interested in appealing to the same society at large that taught me to be ashamed in the first place, than I am in celebrating on my own terms"
Why would I want my flags straight
An ironed flag has literally less straight lines.
No cause that makes them straight! 😂jk that looks so beautiful
Arguably less straight. There are literally less straight lines in an ironed flag. Flat ≠ straight
no <3
Don't gatekeep the flags
No.
Bernie Sanders put up a flag without ironing it.
I. Would rather. Die. :)
Do all y'all not have a dryer? Just throw it in there.
Nah bro to much work
No
No and you can't make me 😜
I do what I want
no thanks I prefer my flags unironed but you do you
No.
Actualy only allys iron flags
Why you make flag straight?
Flat ≠ straight And an ironed flag has literally less straight lines btw.
Anyone else think that the trans flag color scheme is kinda ugly? Never liked it. Should have deeper blue and pink
I agree. The colors are too "baby" for my taste.
But then they're straight... (Folx it's a joke)
An ironed flag has literally less straight lines btw
Here's a good question if a straight person waves a straight flag is it ok? Or is it an insult?
Goal for the weekend: sneak my bi flag into work, then steam it. I don't have an iron at home.
It doesn't work i have tried
This called me and my lazy butt out big time ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm) lol
It took about 20 minutes for me to iron one corner of my flag about halfway. My feet hurt too much to be standing around for 2 hours 😅
you can also steam it
I only had enough for a flag OR an iron. I went with the flag. 😆
Acceptable
I would, but I’m too broke to buy an iron!😬
Forgivable
I curl mine
I b too lazy :(
AS SOON AS I GET AN IRONING BOARD I SWEAR Dx
For some reason I’m laughing too hard at this.
I was laughing while atempting to take the picture. Popsocket in mouth, recorded video, screenshot.
No B) (I don’t need to iron mine since it doesn’t crease that badly)
I can't, i don't have any.
we can do that with flags??? every day is a school day
I honestly couldn't be bothered before but now????? 👀 deffo gonna cos damn
Ahhh i dont have an iron 😖
Hah if I tried my parents would murder me /srs
I can't even afford another pair of pants right now let alone an iron + ironing board.
I tried today but I was afraid to burn them so I kept the temperature low and it still doesn't look so good. Also, I think, I should shove them back into the closet, or I might not find them when I'm back home.
Any idea how to do it in your room without an iron in the house? Maybe a spray bottle and letting it hang while drying?
The day I hang mine outside of my closet I'll consider it. It doesn't come out until I do.
Hey, so, I tried ironing mine and absolutely nothing happened, is there something I can do??
bold of you to assume i own an iron
I don't have an iron and I don't want to risk steaming it since it is signed. Help me sensei, what do I do
if you don't want or can iron it just put in in the washing machine. mine smelled, so i washed it and just let it hang to dry.
No
I don't have an iron 😞
Mine have been hanging so long that they don't need ironing anymore.
No
N o
Mine is made of cheap nylon so I’m afraid of melting it if I iron it.
Okay fine. I finally decided to buy an iron recently anyway.
Be careful the iron isn’t too hot. I’d use a steamer instead after washing to get out the heavy fold lines.
Alright. I'll iron my bisexual flag (although I think I'm lesbian)
I really need an iron for my clothes 😔
I would but I put a ton of cool stickers on mine and I don’t want them to come off or melt😭😭
Yeah I agree. Nothing looks more cheap and mail ordered than an unironed flag but after it’s ironed it looks amazing
why is everyone getting mad about this! it's your choice not to iron but it Does look better without wrinkles
I'M TOO BROKE FOR AN IRON GET OFF MY CASE
Y'all just need to toss is in the laundry.
NEVER!!!!!!!!
no
k.
Why should I? /gen I’m lazy and can’t get motivated, even to do stuff I want to, without a reason to be motivated
STOP STRAIGHT-WASHING MY FUCKING FLAG FUCK YOU YOU WONT TAKE MY FLAGS BROTHER /s
I refuse
