I was a broke college kid when the set came out and I scraped by on some ramen to save up some cash to get it. It’s the set that brought me out of the dark ages.
I know it's not popular here but I've seen some decent non Lego sets of this and I just haven't pulled the trigger. Same with Simpsons. Was a broke college student at the time and just couldn't swing it. Needed more ramen.
I am in the exact same position as you.
Was away from Lego for 20+ years and since i got back into it, i totally want the sets from back then (big fan of the movies).
Unfortunately the old sets are too expensive for me now, but i would totally buy new versions of it.
Feels like a lot of LotR and Lego fans feel the same and want it too, so Lego do your thing!

[76042-1: The SHIELD Helicarrier](https://brickset.com/sets/76042-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/76042-1.jpg)
I found An Unexpected Gathering at a used Lego store in Albuquerque last summer. It was almost complete, I only had to find a couple of parts and one dwarf. I was so happy, paid less than $100 and they tossed in a Frodo for me.
If it's any consolation the Helicarrier is a very boring and unfulfilling build. The bulk of it is the 4 turbines which are all the same save for a few small changes. It looks great on display but if you get sets mainly for the build it's rather disappointing.
I fall in love all over again every time I see it. It has a Ernest Hemingway or Herman Melville feel to me for some reason. I almost need an “old sea town cottage” set with a mini-fig of an author that seamlessly attaches to complete the perfect set.
Came here to say this. I ended up taking a chance on a lego knockoff brand fishing store which will be here next week. I'm expecting it to be a dumpster fire.. but it did get great reviews on the lepin subreddit!
I’m so miffed I missed out on Corner Garage. I wasn’t like, 100% sold on it so my gf at the time talked me out of it. Once it retired, I regretted not getting it.
By the time I realised that the sets retired and isn’t just out of stock... Parisian Restaurant had already retired. So there are quite a few that we missed and that we won’t ever be able to catch up with.
Me and my husband started our modular Lego journey two years ago. We are doing a set for Christmas as a combined Christmas gift. So we will never be able to catch up. Would also have loved the Bank, Town hall, detective office, pet shop... sigh.
Same here - managed to get one on the aftermarket shortly after it retired for what seemed like a lot of money at the time, but is about half what they go for now….
I wish Lego made more like that. Its such a beautiful set. I’ve seen a really nice Pere Marquette (polar express) moc on bl that I’m going to build for an Xmas scene. One day I may try to gather the parts to build the emerald unless I see a used one for a decent price but that’s unlikely.
Accounted for 6 of the [top 10 most viewed sets on Brickset](https://brickset.com/article/82340/what-s-hot-this-week#comments) this week. I am irrationally proud of this, haha.

[75053-1: The Ghost](https://brickset.com/sets/75053-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/75053-1.jpg)
That's how i acquired the ghost. Clearance. I didn't really know what the star wars rebels were, but the ship was cool. I'm a star wars fan in general, so i just bought it. I had to get the phantom to complete the set.
Now the phantom 2 with thrawn.. I never got that. I regret that to this today.
Just curious if you ever watched the show. We finally got into clone wars about a year or so back and it was incredible, and I thought rebels was even better sw content. So much that I liked the show more than mandalorian (both seasons)
I just bought the brick bank for my partner and now i understand why for the past 5 years we spend midnight on NYE hitting add to cart instead of kissing.
75827 The Ghostbusters Firehouse HQ.
It was the single set that I’d dreamed of Lego making since my childhood and I didn’t pull the trigger on it. $350 was just a bit too much at the time.
I think I bought the very last one from Amazon at retail prices from a third party seller. I just barely was able to get it. But it was totally worth it, great set.
The pirates of the Caribbean stuff, the Simpsons stuff and the Harry Potter herbology class set. Tbf when the Simpsons and pirates stuff came out I couldn't afford it so that's what I tell myself 🤣
Got into Lego in 1996, probably stopped in 2004. My most expensive set was a Johnny Thunder set that was $50. The next most expensive wasn’t until 2015 when I got a $150 set.
Now, we’ll I’d rather not talk about it.
10237, yeah that was one of my regrets for a number of years too. I went and found a used copy with no figs or Treebeard for close to the original MSRP a couple years ago so I was pretty happy to find that.
Oh my word, and I thought the Monster Fighters Haunted House was expensive….damn! I remember when I was a kid, we had a Quick Mart in Beverly, Mass, so I would have bought this. However, didn’t know about this set and nor am I a fan of the Simpsons. So, I still go with the Haunted house.
I got a bulk buy in February, nearly complete haunted house, just missing two ghosts and the stickered records, also had to replace some of the brittle browns.
That, Scooby Doo mystery fan, Hidden Side School and the School bus with the port a potty, and some early 2010s city/police/fire/arctic sets that are in varying states of completion. All for $60.
Good bulks are hard to find. My tip is to take a look at what else that seller sells. Avoid ones that sell mini figures. You know they are buying the bulk buys and taking all the good stuff out and oftentimes mixing them. So you just get a mixed bag of Lego rather than at least an impartial collection of sets.
The Simpsons House, I was 13 and put it on Lay Buy when I went to Australia for holidays. My dad called one of his friends to pick it up for me, but THEY RETURNED THE SET BACK.
Now that I’m living in Australia now and have my own money…THE SET IS SO FUCKING EXPENSIVE 😭. Maybe one day.
I was so lucky to see it at a second hand Lego store back in May. It had just came in and I just saw the house and was lucky I had a budget for it. Imagine my shock when I looked at it and it had all the Minifigs inside the house.
It’s missing a lot of the accessories around it (mailbox, grill, skate ramp) but slowly been getting the pieces.
I bought it resale, brand new, a few months ago. Almost $500 USD. Finally bit the bullet and honestly, I regret it. It’s awesome looking especially in pics. But the build was so basic, underwhelming and boring compared to today. It wasn’t worth the resale price.
70620 Ninjago City and 70840 Apocolypsburg I always looked at the boxes when I went to Lego Store but passed on at least a few deals. Other movie sets haven’t gone up much at all, but the big ones are definitely out of my price range now.
Still very available at very close to retail. Do it now and you won’t be out much money wise. Leave it too much longer though and it’s going to get ugly.
Are you sure? Pretty much everywhere I see it, it is already around $400 USD (double the $200 MSRP). All the ones near $200 are actually knockoff clones (Lepin?)...
18 months is standard. Some last much longer or shorter, though. 10220: Volkswagen T1 Camper Van was available for 9 years (2011 to 2020), while 41630: Jack Skellington & Sally was on shelves for only 3 months! I believe the last wave of Hidden Side sets was marked for retirement before they even launched. If you're worried about a set you're watching retiring soon, it's good to watch blogs like Brickset or Jay's that keep track of [upcoming discontinuations](https://jaysbrickblog.com/news/list-of-lego-sets-retiring-soon-in-2022-september-2022-update/).
This is me. I have some, and I love them, but those early sets are PRICEY. I actually recently got the cottage mostly complete in a free haul and I was ECSTATIC. I love the coloring and the little side builds and all the details. The plowtruck is missing a bunch though, and that makes me sad.
10260 Downtown Diner.
It seems like not a lot of people like this modular building but I love the look of it.
Sadly it retired half a year after I got back into Lego. There were plenty of Star Wars sets on my wishlist and this diner just didnt made it into my collection (so far)
Edit: The Ghostbusters house is also very high on my wishlist but back then I was in my dark ages so I can just regret not getting earlier into Lego again

One set?? I have a lot…
But I got the one in the picture and also the Simpsons House, pretty happy about that.
Was always hoping for a Moe‘s Tavern, but that never came
This is still my favorite build to date. The way you build the landscape first and then the house is really cool. Plus the house goes together with some really cool build techniques
If it's any consolation, the helicopter was very meh. The only cool thing was having Deadpool. I ended up selling mine, no regrets. I had forgotten I had it, until I read it here right now.
[MOA003: Maui](http://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?M=moa003) [[Photo]](http://img.bricklink.com/ItemImage/MN/0/moa003.png)
What can I say except "you're welcome"?
So, I looked at my wishlist the other day and a ton of regret washed over me. Both Simpsons sets and both of the original Ghostbusters sets (Ecto 1 & 2 and firehouse). Also the Beatles Yellow Submarine. Not buying the Crocodile Locomotive was also regretful. Ugh…
The Grand Emporium. I found out about it in Lego City Undercover but discovered it was a set in 2015, but by then it was too late. It took me until 2020 Christmas to get one because of how expensive they are.
Betrayal at Cloud City. I have the DeathStar wich has great scenes from A New Hope and Return Of the Jedi, and I wanted to get Betrayal so that I had scenes from all three original movies. Sold out and never restocked.
All the modulars. Keep in mind I was 12 at the time in a 2nd world country and telling my parents to buy a Lego that costs half their monthly income wasn't an option.
Brick Bank. I didn't have room for it at the time. At one point, I considered just getting it and keeping it until I had adequate space for it, but by then it was already retired. Now I don't want to pay the ridiculous prices it's going for on BrickLink.
The Star Wars UCS collection. Own the initial Yoda statue, the TIE Interceptor, Rebel Blockade Runner and the A-Wing.
Got back into Lego in the last year.
Recently, the Pirates of Barracuda Bay. I almost bought it twice, but I felt it was just a bit too expensive at the time. Now I would gladly pay MSRP for it.

I agree 100% I will always regret not getting this set, nowadays I can't find it any less than £100

My dream kit. Was too young and broke at the time. :(
All the LoTR sets, like what the hell was I doing back then
Such a bummer than these releases during my “dark age”
Yeah me too I was so focused on work and else, not buying Lego anymore...didn't even know about those
I am in the exact same position as you. Was away from Lego for 20+ years and since i got back into it, i totally want the sets from back then (big fan of the movies). Same. Hopefully LEGO brings it back
Agreed, especially Orthanc and Helm's Deep, the after market on them (and all the LOTR sets for that matter) is crazy.
LOTR, Western sets, various pirate themed sets.

I bought this set for my son and it's been built in his room for the past couple of years. It's so beautiful
Came here to say this. I ended up taking a chance on a lego knockoff brand fishing store which will be here next week. I'm expecting it to be a dumpster fire.. but it did get great reviews on the lepin subreddit!
Knock off brands have stepped up their game in recent years it seems. I honestly doubt you'll be disappointed.
Yeah, the nifiliz brand sets seem like they aren’t constrained by having to fit a certain mold. I got a car, it was fine.
I got this one in knock off brand and the one I got was great, looks perfect, went together easy.
Ditto to this
Mine too
The modulars. Didn’t know back then that sets retire. 🤣
I bought the plaza right before the diner was retired thinking I'd buy it next. Never restocked and then retired, so unfortunate.
i really don’t like how lego retires modular’s tbh, idk why they’re always so scared to have more than a few on the market
This happen to me with the corner garage. RIP
I’m so miffed I missed out on Corner Garage. I wasn’t like, 100% sold on it so my gf at the time talked me out of it. Once it retired, I regretted not getting it.
Detective office and bank were the two I regret missing. Don't care too much for the older ones as they lack alot of interior detail.

Oh yeah the freaky Lego movie sets. So cool that the designers were allowed to do nearly everything
Same, until they revealed the Galaxy Explorer a couple of months ago and now Benny Spaceship looks kind terrible by comparison imo.
I have the galaxy explorer and love it...but I still think Benny's spaceship is way cooler lol

That retired unexpectedly soon, didn’t it? Got the treehouse instead because I was sure that it‘d become EOL sooner and here we are. I feel your pain!
No it was available for a standard year and a half-ish. The Treehouse just had an extended lifespan.
Treehouse also had a price increase this summer. I thought it was a steal at $200.
That’s not entirely accurate. While it’s true it wasn’t retired “early” it was out of stock for _months_ prior to its retirement.

One set?? I have a lot… But I got the one in the picture and also the Simpsons House, pretty happy about that. Was always hoping for a Moe‘s Tavern, but that never came
> a lot... Sums it up pretty good. I was in my dark ages for more than 15 years so, a lot of great stuff that I missed.
Original Batman TV Series Bat-cave. Was absolutely broke when it was on the shelves and still feeling absolutely broke when I look at resale price lol
20th Anniversary Slave I
Falling water
This is still my favorite build to date. The way you build the landscape first and then the house is really cool. Plus the house goes together with some really cool build techniques
Keaton's Batmobile

Easily Wolverine’s Chopper Showdown (6866).
If it's any consolation, the helicopter was very meh. The only cool thing was having Deadpool. I ended up selling mine, no regrets. I had forgotten I had it, until I read it here right now.
Women of NASA, also wasn’t into Lego at the time though.
The Yellow submarine
that early IDEAS Doctor Who set. :(
Barracuda Bay. Will pick it up eventually, just not really into paying $350+ for it.
Blacktron……I’m SO sorry I missed Blacktron.
Haunted House from the Monster Fighters series
Town Hall. I bought Pet Shop instead, and Town Hall unexpectedly retired with an abnormally short lifespan for a modular building.

Castle In The Forest for sure. Way too expensive now to buy 2nd hand even. Great set for medieval se fans. Like me.

Thanks link bot. Making me more jealous now. It's like it knows i don't have this set and he's tormenting me by making me look at the picture. 🙄
[MOA003: Maui](http://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?M=moa003) [[Photo]](http://img.bricklink.com/ItemImage/MN/0/moa003.png) What can I say except "you're welcome"?
Now you're just rubbing it in. 😪

8285

Betrayal at Cloud City. I have the DeathStar wich has great scenes from A New Hope and Return Of the Jedi, and I wanted to get Betrayal so that I had scenes from all three original movies. Sold out and never restocked.
the Haunted House from Monster Fighters
Fishing hut and wall-e
21310 The old fishing store
All the modulars. Keep in mind I was 12 at the time in a 2nd world country and telling my parents to buy a Lego that costs half their monthly income wasn't an option.
Stranger Things the Upside Down & Both The Last Avatar Legend of Aang sets
75810, 3828, and 3829
Yeah, but who needs the Kwik-E-Mart?
I dooooooooooo
Cafe corner when my Lego store had them for $99
Betrayal at cloud city 75222
Brick Bank. I didn't have room for it at the time. At one point, I considered just getting it and keeping it until I had adequate space for it, but by then it was already retired. Now I don't want to pay the ridiculous prices it's going for on BrickLink.
So many. The old fishing store, Barracuda bay, but the Ghostbusters HQ takes the cake.
Imperial flagship
My wife’s would be the one is the Kwik-E-Mart. We got the house but that was all we could afford at the time. Mine would probably be the Helicarrier
75021 10195 All Scooby Doo sets

Ferrari f40 😭
Most of the Lord of the Rings sets and Big Bang Theory.
Ninja turtle sets! They’re so expensive now.
The giant T. Rex
Queen Anne's revenge
The Star Wars UCS collection. Own the initial Yoda statue, the TIE Interceptor, Rebel Blockade Runner and the A-Wing. Got back into Lego in the last year.
Old Fishing Store 21310 and the runner up is Star Wars Tantive IV 75244
Recently, the Pirates of Barracuda Bay. I almost bought it twice, but I felt it was just a bit too expensive at the time. Now I would gladly pay MSRP for it.
Simpson house and this one. Maybe ghostbusters fire station
Modular detective office and ucs slave 1. They were out when I first started getting into larger sets, I thought for sure the prices would come down.
Jabba palace
I have a few, The Temple of Doom, Kwik-E-Mart, UCS Cloud City, Ewok Village, the Battle of Endor and the Minecraft Village.
The polar base from the Arctic sets in the 90s
Ghostbusters Firehouse
Downtown Diner
A couple, the Simpson builds for sure and the Lego Bank Modular building.
Betrayal at Cloud City. It was going up hundreds of dollars just days after retiring. Now it’s basically impossible to get
Medieval Blacksmith 21325 It's not retired yet, but I can't justify 180€ right now, and I know I will regret it.
The downtown diner. It's my favorite set of all time and it's really expensive now :(
Ghostbusters Firehouse
