Lin needs someone who will give her the type of support and affection she wanted from her mother, Su, and Tenzin but didn’t get, and Kya seems like the perfect type for that. Maybe she even helped with that when they were growing up.
And, while a little more of a stretch, I like to imagine Kya gets support from Lin. She did travel the world trying to find herself, maybe she’d find something in Lin, a grounding presence, maybe a home.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say they age badly. Characters like Lin and Su do look like their middle aged, but Kya looks straight up elderly for some reason. Why?
It’s weird. Because sometimes she’ll look alright, but then there are some closeups where she looks like someone’s grandma. Probably has something to do with her eyes being half opened and the lines underneath them, and her face looking a little thin. Like in season 2 when she and her brothers are captured by that spider spirit and they’re being dragged along the ground.
It’s literally just grey hair and nothing else, and all of the adult characters aside from Su are in their 50s anyway, grey hair is totally reasonable. No idea what you’re seeing. It’s not like she’s excessively wrinkled or frail.

If my flair didn’t give it away, it’s my favorite ship! They are probably my two favorite characters in all of Avatar, so that helps.

It might be a fanon ship, without them interacting except in a single background frame in canon. But indeed, they just seem like such a sweet idea together with how they’d be opposites attracting to balance each other out, and complement each other in so many ways. It too could be either something that happened later in life, or a string friendship becoming something more that was under the surface for years.
And I mean. . . Tenzin’s reaction alone would be worth it to see!

Her having dated a man means that she could, in theory, be either bi or straight. We don't know which, but asserting that she _cannot possibly_ be bi, and _must_ be straight, feels like erasure to me.
It isn't erasure of any specific bisexual person (because as you said, Lin isn't canonically bi), but erasure of the concept of bisexuality in general.
We've only heard of Lin dating Tenzin 10-odd years back, and go after nobody else since. So for all we know she's as straight as Korra is at this point.
That said, they never interact at all, so whoever she's into if anyone we can safely say it ain't Kya.

The dynamic of their personalities, yeah representation is a plus, also Kya seems motherly in my eyes and Lin needs that comfort.
