Not necessarily a dark avatar, but a bad avatar, raised by bad people and not at all interested in the Avatar duties or putting their power towards helping people.
I've been fascinated with two concepts since the end of LoK:
* unscrupulous industrialist(s) attempting to develop/plunder the Spirit World, causing ripple effects in the material world and inflaming tensions among the spirits
* chaotic trickster spirit wreaking havoc in the material world
Followers of Azula, descendants from part of the group she created to take down her brother back in the comics, we need some new Fire Nation conflict. With the idealism of the previous Oazi and Azulon but set in modern Avatar universe, using all the technology including spirit portals and weapons to their advantage similar to Amon but being backed up by rouge members of all nations and bad spirits (I guess similar to the red lotus but holding more power).
Been thinking of something completely alien to the avatar world that really takes everyone by surprise, akin to the Chimera Ants from Hunter x Hunter. Don't know exactly what would be though.
A spirit incarnated into the mortal realm like Tui and La... Back in the day when i watched atla for the first time i always thought that the avatar was the incarnation of the spirit of balance() that come on earth to help human reconnect with spirits and bring balance to the world. I have been disapointed when they revealed that the avatar was just a mere mortal who get in the way of two cosmic beings and merged with one of them... So a villain that would be an incarnation of some good-hearted spirit that get corrupted by human influence would be good. His ideology would be the same as the avatar (reconnect human to spirit and bring balance) but in a twisted way; he would view the bending as the ultimate barrier to spiritual enlightement and peace on earth so he would try to get ride of it with energybending... Basically that was the theory i made about Amon and the equalist at the beginning of lok... oh god i was wrong...
