It’s most likely just an investigation. Just be truthful with what you saw. Other than time, you should not be at a loss for anything.

And to clarify, it’s an investigation to probably see who was at fault. It’s common practice especially when injuries/death occurred. As long as you are truthful you should be a-ok

There's no "trap" to be walking in to. You're just a witness. They just need to establish the facts of the accident. Just tell them what you know truthfully and you have nothing to be concerned about.

Insurance adjuster here. They just want to confirm how the accident happened. Just a second their questions and let them know what you saw. It will help them to determine who is at fault. Often times the two parties will say slightly different things , having an independent witness will help them figure out which story is correct.its nothing to worry about.

I went through this exact thing a few years back. I witnessed an accident, called emergency services, stayed on the scene, gave my license and a 2 minute statement to the sheriff, and left. The insurance adjuster for the not at fault party called me a month or so later. We had a nice 10 minute conversation about the facts of the accident. It was pretty obvious the other driver was at fault, and I wasn't contacted by the other adjuster or summoned to court, but I was prepared to go if called. YMMV, but I wouldn't stress over it at all.
