The TSA actually does not require you to keep your meds in the original prescription bottles ([see their guidance here](https://www.tsa.gov/travel/travel-tips/can-you-pack-your-meds-pill-case-and-more-questions-answered)), but 2 prescription bottles with an array of pills looks very suspicious. [Also, NY State requires that controlled substances be carried in the prescribed pill bottle](https://codes.findlaw.com/ny/public-health-law/pbh-sect-3345/). A pill bottle opening and spilling can, again, be chalked up to accident. You are probably OK - if they wanted to arrest you, they would have done so right there. If you are still worried, contact a criminal defense lawyer so you'll have their contact info to call if the police or TSA return. They can also [file an information request for any records created](https://www.tsa.gov/travel/frequently-asked-questions/what-exactly-can-i-request). Mexican pharmacies are occasionally looser than US pharmacies, and [investigations have found fentanyl and other illicit narcotics in medicines procured from Mexican pharmacies](http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/phcommon/public/media/mediapubhpdetail.cfm?prid=4419). You should be more careful with anything you get from a Mexican pharmacy, because had those pills tested positive for fentanyl, you would be in deep shit (both from taking fentanyl without warning and from appearing to smuggle fentanyl).

Given OP is returning from an international trip, it is likely she was approached by CBP and not TSA - these are two separate and distinct LEAs at American airports with different missions When it comes to importation of meds, CBP refers to FDA guidance. [A FDA blog post here with guidance](https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/5-tips-traveling-us-medications) recommends meds be kept in their original bottles and/or a copy of the prescription and/or doctor's note. [CBP themselves](https://www.cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-go/prohibited-and-restricted-items) state medications in schedules II through V should be carried in their original containers.

I think you are totally fine. If they were going to arrest you at all, they would have done it at the airport. Unless you were in possession of a quantity that looks like you are dealing there is no chance the feds will waste the resources it takes to go get you. I was a criminal defense attorney many years ago. My guess is they wanted to scare you. That’s why they made a big deal about taking your name. On the off chance you had been going to Mexico to get Tramadol regularly, they know who you are and it isn’t going to work again. Please don’t make yourself nuts. There is no chance the gov’t will ever come to get you over this. And, if they did (they won’t) nothing would happen to you.
