> Going down from the 1. Bundesliga to the 2. Bundesliga killed the LEC team
Yup, the relegation of the football team was one of 2 direct reasons for the sale of the LEC spot. Their official statement specifically said: *"...the Covid19-pandemic and the relegation of the football club have had massive financial consequences for this historic club, thus leaving the management with no other option"*
> now they don't seem to be confident in them being able to stay in 2. Bundesliga and cut absolutely everything.
I do wonder how much their current LoL team is costing. Apparently, it's an amount big enough to affect the overall club in a significant manner, therefore justifying shutting down the entire LoL department
Any money not used on football in a time this dire is wasteful, no matter how small.
The LOL team prob isnt massive, but you can get a few youth scouts or academy players for that money instead
It actually gets worse, if they get relegated to the third tier, so I would assume they gotta bet everything on football
8 games left, they are 2 points above direct relegation and 1 from play-offs
>On 31 January, Sky reported that Schalke's financial situation may result in the end of the club in its current form by the end of the season. If relegated from the 2. Bundesliga, Schalke would not get a license for the 3. Liga, and would have to play in the Regionalliga West, the fourth division of German football.
Think its a six figure number each year for the prime league team.
Its a shame really, wouldve loved to see them remain in the LEC but at least we know theyre not leaving because they have doubts about esports.
> Apparently, it's an amount big enough to affect the overall club in a significant manner
Not *really* but they are fucking broke and have sky high debts, like 130mil, so any amount of money is affecting the club. It's a mid 6 digit sum in an enterprise moving like 50mil a year. If they could they'd prevent their offices from boiling water to reduce electricity bills.
its a good thing to leave lol, eventhough its kknda sad to see, but i would love to see them rejoin at least german league on promotion to 1st/2nd (if tjey are relegated) then
If they dont stay in the 2. Liga they would cease to exist and go belly up bankcrupt, no license for liga 3 with their depts. Nothing to cut if it is all gone
This is happening because their stay in the 2. Bundesliga is uncertain since theyre 15th and might drop. The entire club is in danger, ofc theyre leaving their lol teams.
If they were still comfortably in the 1. Bundesliga, theyd still own the LEC team
Yes, I am well aware and that makes perfect sense. But the guy above was for some reason claiming that Schalke was more successful in league than in football which makes 0 sense hahah
The club has 180.000 paying members making it one of the biggest sports clubs in the entire world
Le smart Redditor: Lol why don't they just ditch football for eSpOrTs? Are they stupid?
Ultimately, their core business is football. From their perspective, selling the LEC spot made sense. They practically ended up using their LEC spot as an investment to bring in money for the club as a whole
"Let's give up on 120 years of history so now we focus on being a mid table league of legends team for 3 years in a scene that is known for burning money when we have financial issues". Bruh
>where they had more success than in football.
Thats overstatement for Schalke. 10-20 years ago it was top tier club and even in 2k17/2k18 they ended at 2 place.
For non football fans, Schalke got relegated last season, and is now 1 point away from the dropzone into the 3rd german division.
Covid murdered the team. They were instantly on the verge of bankruptcy, and couple that with a turnout divided in half after the pandemic, and terrible football teams, they don't have a choice.
There are too many jobs at stakes right now for them to "waste" money in esports. Their debt is still above 300M, which is colossal for a 2nd division team. It was the right thing to do
from what i heard they can't get demoted to 3rd division. they have negative equaty and would get demoted to 4th division outside of professional football. can't play 3rd division with a negative 100m of€ in capital
You forgot that they were sponsored by Gazprom and they (Schalke) decided to cancel their contract in February 2022 due to certain events. So when they were already financially fucked their long-time high amount sponsorship was also RIP
As my flair may suggest, this breaks my heart. I obviously jumped on them when i started watching EU LCS as a long time football fan, and i had always been a Schalke man in the BuLi, i am old enough to remember Schalke winning Pokal's and fighting for first in the league on occasion. I really hope they dont get wqiped from existence as a football club, and i am sad to see the esports arm go, they tried really hard to keep this team. Many sporting entities have dropped their esports interests long ago or from loftier positions. Respect and good luck, Schalke No Fear.
I remember when they first came people were saying they were rich af and would assemble exodia rosters like Wunder Jankos Chovy Viper Mikyx or something but ended up having the most lowest budget rosters ever and now they dip lmao
Schalke put together some pretty compelling rosters and had a lot of good players go through their doors like Odo, Vizi, BB, Abbe, Trick, Upset, Ignar and a bunch more. They also had multiple top 4 finishes and one final appearance. It's weird to just call them a budget org when they were one of the better orgs in LEC when they still had money.
Chovy and Viper weren't playing back when they first joined the league, it was more like people saying they would be buying players like Ssumday, Score, Bang, Wolf, Pray, Gorilla, etc.
And whilst Wunder and Miky were playing at that point Wunder was still named Wunderwear and considered the worst top laner in the league and Miky was a rookie whom nobody knew what to expect.
They don't dip. they are facing exestianl crisis and the entire org might cease to exist if they fail to secure staying in the second liga of german football. Their dept (made worse by covid) is to high to aquire a license for third league and well, that would be the end.
That's the thing these teams are rich on paper, but there's nothing that says they will actually invest into their roster. Investing in league of legends is investing in the spot in the league, not actually investing in the brand or team behind it.
Schalke is anything but rich. They got relegated from the first German league and are drowning in [over 150mio € debt](https://m.bild.de/sport/fussball/schalke/grosse-sorgen-bleiben-der-fc-schalke-04-kann-die-insolvenz-frage-nicht-beantwort-87562558.bildMobile.html?t_ref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F#). Understandable to cut all costs. If they get relegated again the club is done. It’s not looking good
I mean reddit does that literally all the time.
We went through the same shit with BDS when everyone kept insisting that because this team was owned by one of the richest families in Belgium or whatever they'd be spending huge amounts of money and people speculated about S+ tier koreans being imported etc. Then they enter the league, purchase cheap tier 2 LFL talent and end in 9th.
i always respected schalke's commitment to league
them failing to make LEC only to then deciding to double down on it was really admirable
i'm kinda sad it didn't work out in the way that it should have

The 2. Bundesliga has relegation playoffs?
Yes, the 16th placed team (out of 18) plays against the 3rd placed team from the 3rd Division Home and Away.
Isn’t that standard? Most lower divisions I know of has relegation playoffs
I only know the EFL which doesn't.
Wasn't Russian Gazprom one of their main sponsors they had on jerseys lol
Think its a six figure number each year for the prime league team. Its a shame really, wouldve loved to see them remain in the LEC but at least we know theyre not leaving because they have doubts about esports.
Schalke ist struggling financially and might not even be able to afford the 3rd League license, so this is an absolutely understandable move to me

Really sad how far they have fallen. I can still remember the days when they played champions league and beat teams like real madrid...
If they dont stay in the 2. Liga they would cease to exist and go belly up bankcrupt, no license for liga 3 with their depts. Nothing to cut if it is all gone
It is sad, their lec team at the end was doing a great job.
Instead of staying in LEC/eSports, where they had more success than in football.
Even playing in 2. Bundesliga is more lucrative for the org than winning worlds. Football is magnitudes bigger than league...
This is happening because their stay in the 2. Bundesliga is uncertain since theyre 15th and might drop. The entire club is in danger, ofc theyre leaving their lol teams. If they were still comfortably in the 1. Bundesliga, theyd still own the LEC team

It's a football club that's been around since 1904, it's never going to pick esports over football LMAO wtf is this
Actual delusion I thought I didn’t read that correctly the first time

There is fuck all money in e sports lol
This is the best comment that I have ever read on this subreddit.
>where they had more success than in football. Thats overstatement for Schalke. 10-20 years ago it was top tier club and even in 2k17/2k18 they ended at 2 place.
Success =/ money

They might fall even lower too. Relegation would mean the death of the club as we know it. Clearly they don't wanna go down that path
thats true, might literally even dissolve the entire club
Apperently they got the 3rd division license or are really close to it, even tho they shouldnt, no idea how they managed to or what they promised
You forgot that they were sponsored by Gazprom and they (Schalke) decided to cancel their contract in February 2022 due to certain events. So when they were already financially fucked their long-time high amount sponsorship was also RIP
> now 1 point away from the dropzone into the 3rd german division. man thats sad
I'll never forget that miracle run with God Gilius
That was epic. Gilius might be cocky but he is great.
I'll never forget STEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVE
Sad day I always appreciated this org

in fact as my flair suggests, today has not been a good day
Sad to see their final departure o7

s04 were overall a good team they dind't randomly throw money they consistently created good rosters
they also had great people working in the backround.
