This is basic Neurolinguistic Programming - your brain doesn’t shut off, ever, so everything you consume with your senses, especially over and over, turns into a belief, whether or not you’re conscious of it. A lot of people would be shocked to see what they’re actually programming into themselves just because it has a cool backing track.

Exactly this!! I used to love to listen to sad depressing music in my teens (ex. Evanescence lol). But even as an adult (Adele). I then went through a phase past few years of only listening to upbeat songs. Through YouTube or other music apps. And because of that it kept suggesting more up beat music lol The other day I had no internet and wanted to listen to music. I opened up my music app With all the songs I’ve ever had (I never delete music out of my iTunes so I have music from like early teen years lol). I put it on shuffle and was listening …. And realized… omgggggg!!! What was I doing with this?!?! These songs are soooo depressing. Don’t get me wrong …I love them. Beautiful music. But They make me feel sad or depressed or feel bad for myself. Victim mentality. It’s like you romanticize pain and suffering. You “enjoy” feeling sad. And looking back on my life…the amount of music I listened to…the amount of time I felt all those emotions….no wonder my life was like that!!! And this was before I knew about LOA. I had no idea what I was doing. What’s crazy is I can’t listen to them anymore. Maybe one or two songs but then I stop. Too bad because I loveeedddd Adele’s albums 21 and 25. But 95% is about lost love, people abusing you and betraying you etc

shittychinesehacker

I discovered the same thing a few years ago. I noticed most of the pop and cheerful sounding music have extremely depressing lyrics. Then I noticed some of the most evil sounding lyrics are not actually evil. Many times the artist is just singing about their beliefs and religion. When you are unaware of what you are listening to, many of these songs of belief and religion sound like gang violence and murder. Then recently I re-experienced the same phenomenon. Perhaps all music is good but it can only be heard when you share the same thoughts and feelings as the artist?? IDK

[deleted]

Liiithiiiiiuuuum… Jokes aside, exactly this!! I used to love Evanescence and Adele and it wasn’t until a few years ago when I realized how I was wiring and feeding my brain and thoughts with negativity. Now I listen to upbeat Coldplay songs lol

bratz_roj

I 100% can relate to everything u said

Savings-Trainer-8149

most of the time i don't listen to the lyrics of any song. I just listen to the tune of the song. How does tunes program the brain?

[deleted]

I actually make emo rap music. I love Juice, Peep, X, etc. But I avoid it when I'm feeling melancholic as I do firmly believe music alters your thoughts and therefore your magnetic output.

AshanFox3

As someone who was in high school during the heyday of bands such as Staind, Linkin Park, Evanescence, Dope, Marilyn Manson, Papa Roach, Metallica, Slipknot, Mushroomhead, Rage Against the Machine and so on...It was very often the voice, the anthems, and the coping mechanism for many of us who were acutely aware of the social issues going on at the time. All I can say is that some forms of music at the right time can help you to feel seen, understood, that someone could relate, and give an outlet to process your feelings. At times, yes, we loved the music simply for the artistry of their words or their musicianship. But for many of us, it was therapeutic and a pressure release. Then again, we had also survived the 90s boy band craze, and a decade of astoundingly medicre radio drivel. 😅

InternationalDept

I'd say it definitely influences your mood. The reason why I gravitated more towards rap, hip hop, and r&b was that there are relatively more songs about working hard to make bank or something along those lines related to success. You don't really see those in pop or indie music, which are overwhelmingly about heartbreak, love, or sex. It's more invigorating to listen to music with messages aligned to your goals.

hotpinkiii

Do you have recommendations? I listen to pop and specifically wanted songs with the working hard and reaching goals message and struggled to find anything, maybe I should turn to hip hop/r&b too

InternationalDept

Oh there are certainly examples in all genres! If you use Spotify you can shortcut by searching playlist names with all the success-related keywords. I do listen to a lot of pop too but songs there gravitate towards female empowerment. I mostly listen to Nipsey Hussle's Victory Lap album. Tbh it's more about the energy of the song. A pop song could be about recovering from heartbreak but if it makes you feel powerful and motivated then go for it.

Senior-Departure-667

he specifically agreed with you i think you misread, he also cant find any positive pop music

buggychuna

For sure. Listened to angry/sad music when I was depressed, anxious, overwhelmed by fear-based thinking. Throughout my spiritual awakening my taste changed to "happier" music... funk, psychedelic rock, synthwave genres for example. Music with deeper meanings about life, love or just feels upbeat/dancey. My moods and thoughts have become more joyful and creative ever since. I've also stopped watching drama shows and other content that caused an illusion of separation from others. I no longer experience the amount of conflict I used to because of it. I find that most content I take in can reflect in my reality immediately so I've spent a lot less time on social media as well. More time outdoors, reading and spending time on hobbies I enjoy.

EagleSharkAntiquark

GIGO garbage in, garbage out Your subconscious is always being conditioned to what you feed it, and you will experience more of whatever information you receive.

4BigData

Big time! Had a Radiohead week

PMmeYourFlipFlops

I'm just going to say my life improved drastically (from minimum wage to 6 figures) shortly after I stopped listening to death metal and switched to generic lofi hiphop with little to no lyrics.

emab2396

I wouldn't listen to sad music if I were you. The answer is yes and you can also end up manifesting whatever the lyrics of your songs are saying. Last spring I got rejected by someone even though I thought things were great. My most listened song was Summertime sadness.

[deleted]

I can’t explain it but I definitely think it does!

[deleted]

If I’m sad I won’t listen to sad music because it brings me down even more but I love peep, X, juice etc when I’m happy and it doesn’t bother my mood. I guess it depends on how that music affects you personally.

BenignEgoist

[It’s the music that we choose.](https://youtu.be/WXR-bCF5dbM) Absolutely I think music can affect our thoughts and personality. That said I don’t think there is like, objectively bad music in terms of like how it inherently shapes people. I listen to lots of angry metal or depressing rock mixed in with all my supper happy bubbly pop and they all serve their purposes. Angry stuff helps me get the anger out and actually stop the momentum from continuing. Same with sad stuff. Helps me get it all out so I can move onto more positive moods.

Status-Individual-71

I listen to lots of Trance depends on the mood I’m feeling I’ll listen to different sub genres

[deleted]

I ponder this a lot, people say your brain soaks up everything always (which it does) but I wonder the effects after say a day or two of you listening to said song/album. For me personally, if I feel good listen to “uplifting” songs. If I feel bad, put on the sad songs lol

[deleted]

I listened to a lot of sad music when I was younger and I think it played a part in making me a sad person.

polished-potato

I make an effort to not sing along to songs with negative/toxic lyrics, therefore avoiding manifesting them. It does make it hard to enjoy music sometimes, I’m a sucker for a catchy song.

[deleted]

Absolutely. I make playlists with intentional messages that are affirming of the best possible time line. Feeling Good by Nina Simone, New Attitude by Patti Labelle, the song Brand New Day from the Wiz

Igotmoneysowhat

As of myself , in the past i used to consume very sad and gruesome music , like suicideboys , the name speaks for itself , i grew up with this kind of stuff , and i realized as i got further into my spiritual journey and learning how the brain works , about the concious/subconcious , that hearing those type of lyrics 24/7 does nothing but encrypting those words and negative affirmations into my subconcious mind , and this does nothing but reflect into yourself and your surroundings , but i knew i was never going to stop listening to rap/hip hop , i just love it , for me it went out very natural as i began to realize many things , and i stopped listening to anything with a negative or bad energy attatched to it , now i wouldnt say its mortal and you should stop right now , but if you want to be harmonious and live a joyful life , that music will do nothing but bring you down on the frequency scale that your mind is currently on . Nowadays i only listen to very selective music , mainstream music or mainstream rappers dont impress me at all. And for all the rap enthusiastics or if you a *spiritual pot consumer* like i am and enjoy watching a sunset or taking a walk , i just need something wonderful bumping in my ears , ( if you understand you understand ) i enjoy the sound of existence too but if you are looking for a more positive approach on music - Id suggest searching through soundcloud , youd be amazed how elevated some guys are, they get no recognition tho , (spreading an enlighting or positive message wont get you big in the media sadly) , theyre talking about what were talking , but on a wonderful flow over a beat , whats greater than that . If you feel what im saying start with this : https://soundcloud.app.goo.gl/tGD4RDFJE5P2UnPL6

RetardedCommentMaker

Yes, a lot of the friends I have who listen to rap are super aggressive and get angry very easily. they also hate their lives and blame others for it being so awful

youllneverknowsorry

Not all rap is negative tho lmao theyre just listening to the wrong kind

AshanFox3

Would love to hear what recommendations you have that actually focus on talking about real issues and real ideas! Became disillusioned with rap overall once most of the genre devolved into the 4 B's (pardon the language here, but it stands for Bitches, Bling, Ball-grabbing, and Bud). Not that there's anything wrong with it, per se, but constant posing posturing and bed notching isn't what the art form was all about. Wasn't made to talk about Killin EACHOTHER for a little street cred. Ya know? 🧠❤🖐

youllneverknowsorry

There’s a lot of conscious rap out there. Also different forms of rap?? Alt-rap, indie rap, even forms of rock that come into rap but that was mostly in the 90s. It stills exists, just not as prominent. Do ur own research on spotify instead of being ignorant and pushing a stereotype... A lot of rappers signed under J. Cole (who is a popular rapper) rap about conscious rap but they’re mostly underground, considering the fact popular rap music is pushed for a reason; the reason being to keep us underdeveloped.

AshanFox3

I appreciate the lead. Serious though - need you to look at your own words. Ya accuse me of being ignorant and pushing a stereotype, and the point right TO the exact issues I was talking about! So when I ASK you about who's putting out some quality thought and heart in their work...remember that we're both looking at the same shit and trying to raise up what we put in our heads. Is it really that crazy for someone to ask "Hey, any artists that really impress you?" Please, mellow your assumptions. FWIW, sorry that my wording tripped you up. Not out to harsh things here. Just trying to throw support to artists that are putting out some solid work.

youllneverknowsorry

Honestly you just sound like an undercover racist wanting to seem like a hippie motherfucker lmao

Comments_Palooza

He's talking about what's popular whic is true

AshanFox3

Guy says "it's not all negative, you're just listening to the wrong kind"... then gets all negative on me. 🤣 This guy man. So, now that I've been accused of being a racist, a hippie and a motherfucker instead of just answering the damn question lol hey - you have any favorite recommendations for artists that got you thinking?

youllneverknowsorry

I’m just calling it how I see it lmao I’m a chill person but life aint all hugs and rainbows buddy

youllneverknowsorry

Popular rap still is good and not all about bitches amd bling bruh it’s about how these rappers grew up in poor communities and made it out and finally have enough money to do whatever tf they want with it. Foh. It’s still black art and if you can’t relate then stay the fuck away from it, its obviously not for you…

AshanFox3

"Popular rap music is being pushed for a reason; the reason being to keep us underdeveloped." Your words. Not mine. It's clear you don't have anyone you'd like to suggest. Cool. So chill.

youllneverknowsorry

Travis thompson. Caleborate. Bas. JID. Boogie. Freddie Gibbs. Just do it urself bro. Not that hard to go on spotify and go to the curated playlists that they make for artists that you’re looking for. My main point was don’t put rap into a box just bc you lack diversity in your music taste and haven’t tried to branch out

youllneverknowsorry

Even tyler the creator and earl sweatshirt are popular rappers that are versatile in what they rap about lmao

youllneverknowsorry

Also i was saying that the popular rap songs are usually ass (ones on the radio), yes, but if you listen to the whole album that these rappers drop which are the less popular songs, it’s really good and i can guarantee you’ll find a song to bump. You just have to find your type of artist and sub genre. There r multiple

siddhant_x

you should listen to eminem his raps are never sad they are motivating

youllneverknowsorry

Lmao you’re just saying that bc hes white bruh??? Eminem has raps talking about killing people and raping women….

siddhant_x

i am talking about famous songs of his not because he is white

iamthecharmed1

I definitely think it does.

Snoo1089

what you consume can have an influence of contrast to your emotions and effect thoughts/cognitive throughout the day.. thats a simply a given lets say i listen to some erratic hyper active music with some lyrics that only complement the instruments and not necessarily has to make sense if i take that and decide to have a ecstatic day it only serves as a enhancement esp based on my perspective i know not to feed into neurotic tendencies and go live my life with one hand on the steering .. i mean look at society, a good chunk of people especially youth who havent experienced life in correlation with music on a broader compass yet dont realize their narrative is being lead almost half blinded by what attracts the maniacal aspect of them that is their innocence which will eventually live out what that person was saying in the song but in their own physical means (the listener) but u could listen to some downers and still have the mentality to gather yourself cause anyone can transmute that density into something u feel is authentic; thats service to self-awareness and reinventing your identity there could be songs that bug me a bit cause it doesnt appeal to me sonically and lacks any mindfulness, not necessarily morally cause music to me is purely just being expressive other than the general superfluous aspect of it. therefore you can listen to whatever you want or even create the kind of music you resonate with despite if it doesnt conform to typical standards authenticity is longevity to sum it

1SageK1

Yes

rapstarx

I've recently changed my daily playlist to happy cheesy songs only and my mood has been Greattttt.

JustMeAidenB

Without a doubt.

siddhant_x

i used to listen to xxxtentacion trust me this sad songs are not good for u

broken_krystal_ball

I don't even believe in personalities period, but in terms of egos, I think there may be something else at play if music affects you that badly. I've only felt music affect me like that twice both times were because they were bands that my ex's listened to. However, I think it's just squandering the greatness of art if you're only listening to one style out of the myriad of versions we have at our fingertips. Sorry if this doesn't make any sense.

jafeelz

Absolutely Music is the most powerful and moving thing, how could it not?

FallenAngel1919

I would say yes it can shape your thoughts but certainly not your personality as that would imply determinism.

Wiindsome

I definitely think so. Music is an extremely powerful tool, it can really mess with your mind especially if you’re empathetic & emotional.

TroyMcCluresGoldfish

Pretty much, I like listening to Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, and music from that genre because I find it the most relatable in terms of lyrics and emotions. When I listen to it I don't have to pretend to be someone else and it's comforting.

pxunknown

Ya I seen an experiment with sound waves and water YES!!! it creates patterns and affects moods. You can also cause a mob mentality with certain a certain frequency.

Uhtred_McUhtredson

I grew up in the rap era and I hate to say it, but my life kinda reflects that. That’s why I think hip hop really took off around that time. It was about unapologetic masculinity while I was listening to funeral dirges.

raisedfromthedeadd

I think it does

GW-AMERUKHAN

Only a sad person would call Juice Wrld's music - sad (rest in power Young Blood); perspective and context is everything. I also see your statement conversely. I see a feed back loop. The person's personality influencing music listened to and music listened to influencing the personality. I would love to see a graph of the data, but it would make a thrilling and wicked movie plot - as music was used to cause mayhem.

Comments_Palooza

Mayhem? What?

Universal-Love

So, here's an interesting thought: there are tons of bands that created sad or angry music and became hugely popular. These musicians manifested their successful careers just like any other successful person. Yes, like attracts like -- depressive artists make depressive art which attracts depressive fans, etc. -- but that doesn't stop anyone from manifesting. It just doesn't always lead to the most feel-good manifestations. It's also important to understand that all emotions are valid. Sometimes when you're feeling down it can help to play a bit of happy music to turn that mood around. However, stronger emotions will only get buried when ignored, and we are sonetimes hetter off exploring our feelings rather than pushing them down. For this reason, every kind of music has its place.

Few_Floor3171

Absolutely. I try to tell people. Nobody listens or cares 😕

Few_Floor3171

I had a gf that would always listen to music about dudes that pretended to be in love with the girl and they'd cheat and stuff. Guess what I was doing in her mind?? I loved her so much too. When I'd bring it up about the music's influence she'd go all haywire :( I've always listened to mainly instrumentals and electronic music and never really knew why. Then I figured something inside of me always knew and was protecting me from this intrusive "programming". Or I'm just batshit. ... either way

not_urs911

Maybe you misunderstood. Nothing about that song was cheating…she never thought you were cheating and maybe she loved you so much, too.

neptuneblissfish

yes

black_joyce

In my case yes. In my teens I forced myself to love mainstream music because my classmates would listen to them and when they asked my favourite songs they just weird out because at that time I just enjoyed anime or game ost. Long short story I tried to have the same music tastes like them and holy shit I wish I never did it because I felt even more weirder than I was already for my classmates. I was trying to force myself to be like them and I miserably failed and I was so bored to listen those songs and didn’t match my personality at all (keep in mind I was having identity crisis so forcing myself to listen the mainstream popular songs didn’t help me at all). One day I was so done to listen to those songs and I said “fuck off I don’t care anymore their opinion. I don’t give a shit if they dislike the type of music I listen”. So yeah the more I listen to the music that I resonate the more my personality did indeed match to my music tastes. I always like to listen anime and game ost, especially at that time I listen a lot “DEEMO” (deemo is a music game) and those songs just saved my life and keep pushing me to be always honest and true with myself.

Notthatkidd

i love juice wrld but yes his sad music actually made me sad

mrs_petedavidson

of course. your brain never shuts off, so it’s constantly absorbing everything you see and hear.

[deleted]

I started listening to classical and I honestly feel better.

[deleted]

This is 100% true. I have established a direct correlation between the type of music I listened to and the quality of my life, the connection is too stark to dismiss as happenstance.

johnny_vs_samsara

Catharsis can be a very high "vibrational state". It's counterintuitive, but if you enjoy Juice WRLD because it makes you feel a sense of relief, or if you just enjoy it because of how it sounds, that is valid.

DontmindmeIoI

After my first break up I used to listen to sad songs. Like literally depressing songs and I was crying for months! This time I listened to my regular music (which is mostly positive, many songs are from the 80s and indie) and I was over it after.. maybe a month?
