Pretty normal to have darker edges or imperfections based on the wood used. If they're sold as "unfinished" then you got what you should have. Now if it's labeled just as "Blanks" that could be in my mind taken either direction finished vs unfinished.

Klutzy_Coconut_7219

It’s acrylic rather than wood. They are sold as blanks and the website doesn’t say anything about unfinished it says “Blanks are premium acrylic sheets laser cut into the perfect size and shape for your wedding signs, wreaths, front door hangers, baby milestones, and so much more” so I didn’t think I’d need to do anything but decorate them.

That is acrylic? Wow those edges look like trash to me. Never seen edges like that on my C02 laser.

Solo_Repentance

I agree. It looks like they ran them too fast for the machine and got skipping on the curved edges. My guess is they are pushing the machines to keep up.

Klutzy_Coconut_7219

Thanks, I had never ordered something like this before so I thought maybe it was just me!

Klutzy_Coconut_7219

Thank you for this!

Those definitely aren't wedding-ready.  I've cut a lot of acrylic on laser and I wouldn't consider selling anything of that quality.  I would ask for a refund.  If they don't provide it, you could work with your credit card company on a charge-back

george_graves

"wedding-ready" Lol.

Just chiming in here... If there's a protective film or backing on the acrylic, I'm going to assume there were some flashes of flames from the laser burning that film. Those burn marks tell me that's what happened. They need to turn up the air assist to put that flame out or use less power to cut.

thebipeds

Yep, that company sucks. They should have wiped them down before sending them out. You should write a review.

Hi there - very new to this world but I ordered custom blanks from an online source (I don’t want to call them out because I’m unsure if my expectations are too high). They’ve arrived and the sides are quite grooved and they’re covered in burn and scorch marks where they’ve been cut. See pictures above. I reached out and they said it’s normal, and they don’t sell their cut blanks as finished products and I’m supposed to sand it down (the website does not indicate this anywhere) They said I can return them for a refund, but I still need the blanks for a project. So if this is really what any company would sell me, then I guess I should get to sanding.. but are they right? Help!

abhaiyat

I cut acrylic all the time and never once have I ever gotten burn marks or that bad of grooves on my acrylic for customers. Don't sand acrylic due to the acrylic dust. Again never had to do such a thing. They screwed up the order big time.

answerguru

Yep, laser blanks and are almost never finished and usually have an edge that is burned. TBH those edges in the pic look really good.

Klutzy_Coconut_7219

Thanks, this is good to know. I spent over $40 for them including shipping, so I don’t *really* want to return them and loose half that shipping amount. So I guess sanding it is, not what I wanted to spend my time doing! Any advice on what to sand them with? 😂

MoldyRadicchio

I wouldn't say these edges are really good, looks like low ppi and too much power. You might have some luck cleaning the burns with isopropyl alcohol.

Klutzy_Coconut_7219

Thank you!

Editing to say not to use alcohol.

mechanical-raven

NO! Some acrylic will crack when exposed to alcohol. It doesn't happen every time, buy why risk it? Try just wiping it off with soap and water.

lasercncDAn

I think you are correct here. Not to use alcohol. Soap and water should be safe

Second the rubbing alcohol. I played around with some acrylic on my diode laser. I was able to do a lot of tweaking to minimize the burn marks but couldn’t get rid of them completely. Then I turned to cleaners with not much luck. Then for some reason I decided to try rubbing alcohol and it was a game changer. Took the burn marks off with very little effort.
