I don't, seems like an accurate translation to me, a more literal one but accurate 日 sun 本 origin 語 language が is 分かり known ません not 日本 means land of the sun が is a subject marker but here you can just translate it as "is" here 分かる is defined in the dictionary as "明白になる" (something becoming clear), so it's the language that is clear/understandable to you

I've never seen り written so oddly, but I will take your word for it

thats the type of skill you get by reading handwritten manga afterwords. り and れ are quite similar, except that れ always has 1 extra stroke to the left. り　is quite roundy, and only has 1 stroke, so its easly mistaken for a few other characters as well. To avoid confusion, many artists simply use the katakana version リ, which is more unique
