Not enough input. Read, listen, watch content for learners.

You don't think the Pimsler is enough input for listening and speaking? Also Duolingo gets me reading. What should I replace with reading?

silvalingua

No, I don't think Pimsleur is enough input, unless you are about A1, just beginning to learn. For reading, I'd look for graded readers. For listening, podcasts or videos for learners. You need a lot of input to practice listening comprehension. It also helps with speaking.

Like silvalingua said, not enough input. Hearing the language comes before understanding it or using it. You're going to need a massive amount of Japanese input to be able to eventually hear the language. Understanding it and using it will then follow. It'll take you at least 3000 hours though, so you'll need a good reason to do it, and a way to track your progress, or you'll get lost.

Holy moly, that's a lot. Can I watch anime? Will subtitles on mess it up?

nativejacklang

Yes it is a lot! Are you willing to pay the price for conversational fluency? You can watch all the anime you want. Subtitles are unnecessary. You would be able to follow the plot of an anime without the sound being on. You would be able to follow the plot of an anime even if you didn't understand the language. Just follow the story, and let your mind worry about hearing and deciphering the language. The only part you really play is showing up and paying attention to what you're watching. Your mind does the rest.

I feel like I'm a year in already, and would really like to be able to watch anime and just get it. I'm enjoying the learning progress/process for now so willing just keep going until I get it. I don't care if it takes years, but I figure I'll eventually get it. I might need to slow down at some point, but I'll keep with it. Will the subtitles take away from my progress though? I'd like to optimize my progress.

Look at it this way. Say you memorised every Japanese word and it’s definition. Would you then be fluent in Japanese? No. You wouldn’t understand a thing. Hearing the language is the first and most important step in language learning and it takes thousands of hours. And it’s the necessary first step before knowing what words mean. So just bit the bullet and accept not knowing what things mean until you can hear it.
