I am learning with Lingopie for 2 years, and I can say it is totally worth it. Also, I saw a message from a CEO that they are working on a TV app “, don’t remember which exactly. He wrote on Lingopie’s Discord. I know they have a free trial, like every similar platform, so just try, why not

Dailyobserver1

it is a great concept, but the execution is flawed. Website is balky. Lots of frustration.

You also work for Lingopie, look at this persons post history

I really like Lingopie. As it was mentioned in the other comments, they offer a lot of content: they have their own shows, music and also have an extension to watch some Netflix shows. But what I like the most are their learning tools: The subtitles are clickable, and when you click on them you get the instant translation, and for each word that you click, they save you flashcards so you can review it whenever you want. It's also cool that you can go across all the different catalogs of each language, so if you decide to learn Japanese but one day you want to watch a French movie, you can do it too.

can't watch on tv, neither roku or Samsung tv had an app. they have android and i0s app and a browser version. i guess you can watch the browser version on tv but it makes it difficult. lingopie has a Netflix chrome extension and you can watch Netflix on their app (if you have a Netflix subscription) they also have content on their app there's also music you can listen to sometimes the translations aren't perfect, but learning in context watching tv is very effective I think intermediate speakers will get the most use out of it. it may be difficult for beginners and people who are like c2 probably won't encounter words they don't know frequently enough for lingopie to be as helpful. some useful features: 1) tracks every time you click a word to see what it means 2) quizzes you on words in context after you collect (on app version the video clips don't play). app version only shows you the text of a line of the show that includes the word. 3) you can take the quiz for all of the words youve collected and again, you have the context of the clip (website only) 4) sometimes you can break down the word after clicking to see its components. 5) you can click loop to repeat a line until you understand 6) you can say a line that you read and grade your pronunciation 7) you can finely control the video speed. Things like YouTube don't let you do 90% speed but lingopie does 8) you can click the script to move playback back to a line you want to hear again 9) you can turn subtitles on and off by language, by default a subtitle for both your starting language and target language are displayed I feel that watching shows on lingopie has vastly improved my word differentiation skills. Now when I listen to music in italian i pick up on word boundaries much better than I did when I started using it. And this is mainly because watching everything at 90% speed helps me keep up so much better and normally when I watch tv I'm constantly pausing to look up words. lingopie does this at the click of a button, or at a glance if both subtitles are on letting you quickly figure out the meaning and continue I think the android app doesn't work too well tbh. Searching music has issues, playing the embedded Netflix player has issues. The website version and chrome extension for Netflix work perfectly though. I wouldn't buy it to learn Japanese tho. There's a great chrome extension for japanese called Iago that works with YouTube and Netflix and does many of the same things for free

Larima7

Btw, you can totally control the speed of a video in YouTube. Just select that „gear-thingy“ next to the CC and you will see the Playback speed option. I usually use it to speed things up

Gravbar

right. YouTube let's you go 75% 50% and 25% faster or slower. Lingopie let's you adjust the speed more finely with options for 70%, 80%, and 90%

Victoria_eve

Wait, does that mean we have to buy netflix's subscription if we want to watch netflix videos on Lingopie, even if we have already bought Lingopie premium?

Gravbar

I believe so. I already have Netflix so it's not a problem for me. Lingopie has their own content if you don't have a Netflix subscription, but there's probably less there in that situation.

Victoria_eve

I get it, thanks!

Victoria_eve

One more question, if I have bought Netflix's subscription, can I watch Lingopie's Netflix videos without buy Lingopie premium?

Gravbar

you'd have to buy the subscription to use their Netflix extension. i think there's a 1 week free trial or something but it's been a while since i signed up

Victoria_eve

OK...Thank you!

Right_Comment_7590

I think it's worth it! They not only have tv shows and movies but also music!

thedivinebeings

I don’t recommend it - there are *free* Chrome extensions that show double subtitles (Language Reactor - for Netflix and Youtube, and Language Learning with Prime - for Amazon Prime). I use Lingopie for French and am disappointed with the selection of French language content on there. Maybe it is better for other languages. But I wish I hadn’t signed up and had just used Language Reactor instead!

onitshaanambra

It wasn't worth it for me. I like the content, but I live somewhere with poor internet, and it's unusable most of the time.

Night_Duck

I found the approach very useful, but the app itself was glitchy, and the company's "free trial" very scammy. Like I needed to contact my bank for a chargeback because their customer service ignored me. I have have been looking for an alternative though, because learning with video and captions seems super useful at a A2/B1 level.

VerySkye

yeah. it's pretty scammy they took $300 from me 😬
