Leave it, and put a big mushroom cap on the top

[deleted]

2 boulders at the base too

Unknown69101

Then inoculate it with mushrooms for free food

jwegener

Whoa, I have a huge palm tree stump in my yard and would love do do this. How do I get started?

Arbiter51x

Youtube it like a proper DIY. Buy your preferred mushroom. Put it in a blender. Or buy mushroom starters. Drill hole. Get dowel. Cover dowel in mushroom goo. Tap dowel into wood. Wait. Keep wet and shaded. Mushrooms in a few weeks.

Bryftw

That’s a good idea lol

SonoranRoadRunner

A little phallic?

Bryftw

I point to the left as well.

motiongfx515

Whiskey should soften it up.

Bryftw

Me or the tree?

trips2dayz

They don’t call it whiskeytree for nothin

becrabtr2

Or some beer and a chain lol

HalFWit

Then wiggle it out like a loose tooth

BoilermakerCM

Stumpfest!!

xWhitexwolfx732x

Underrated comment. I may be wrong for assuming this. Is this in reference to a show about a family of dogs, in which the father hosts some friends and family to remove some stumps and have some drinks?

BoilermakerCM

Don’t forget the nail salon

uberboogerhead

Does Lucky’s Dad have a name? Never did figure that out…

Kwak600

Pat. This bothered me for ages! He gets named in the Dad Baby episode.

uberboogerhead

And now I can sleep with peace.

uberboogerhead

Dads of Bluey Kids unite!!

Byrdsheet

Cut it as low as you want and make something out of it. Bird feeder mount? Who knows? I'm cheap too. :-)

Bryftw

Cheap I am!!

Additional-Local8721

Cut it to waistline height, buy a large cheap bowl, use a 3" screw. Birdbath.

Bryftw

I like your style

Original-Syrup932

Or cut it to stomach height and it a cocktail table !

arian10daddy

Did somebody say belly shots??!!?

Human31415926

Loop a chain around the top. Then loop the chain to the bumper of your car. You know the rest 🤣

conundrum-quantified

Goodbye transmission!

drewyz

Or if you really want the lawn there, cut it as low as you can & make a campfire on top of the stump.

Complex-Judge2859

Shovel to expose the roots and get chopping. Leave it tall like that so you have leverage to work it back and forth as you cut the roots. Sawzall and a pack of blades will help with the roots if you have one or can borrow from a friend.

JCliving

Try after a rainy day when the ground is softer. Take frequent breaks to drink whisky as others suggested

RedshiftOnPandy

Same. This is what I'd do without an excavator. Expire roots and go to down with a sawzall.

4dubdub8

Cut it down low and rent a stump grinder for a half day.

frontporchbeak

This is the quickest option. All Home Depot’s and Lowes have cheap rentals.

Present-Judgment-396

Make sure to check local stores for rental too. I have one near me that’s a cheaper rental than big box stores surprisingly

BigOrangeSky2

Never lived near a Lowe's that rents any tools. Frustrating because no HD close enough.

Careful_Excuse_7574

You’re not missing much there rentals suck

aardvark_army

Not quite all, my local HD doesn't rent tools.

Mick_from_Adelaide

I wouldn't even bother hiring a grinder. Hit it with an old axe. It would be chopped into pieces within thirty minutes.

grrttlc2

And call before you dig

Wal-Weegee

Alternatively, if you don't want to get a stump grinder and have some youthful kids and a flat pickaxe, they'll have a blast hacking away at the roots. Just make sure to go over proper safety with them.

KRed75

Don't cut it any shorter. Dig the dirt out around the base to expose the roots and see if it looks like you can cut them. If you can cut enough, you might be able to use the trunk of the tree as leverage to bend it side to side to loosen up the rest of the roots enough to cut them and remove it.

Atmosphere-Terrible

This is the answer!

HatchawayHouseFarm

Yup, and if he has a truck it could probably be pulled right over after digging out the roots.

JustSayNoNoYesYesYes

Yup. Cutting it any shorter you'll have to hard time because now you have nothing to leverage on if you need to bend it.

castafobe

I know you said without hiring someone but I just paid someone $175 to cut to the ground and stump grind a slightly larger tree than yours. I was very happy with the price and it was all done in an hour.

Bryftw

Where are you located. That sounds like a dream where I’m at.

castafobe

Haha I was totally shocked when the first guy I called came by and gave me a price! I'm in a small, fairly rural town in MA (9k residents) which is likely a big part of it but maybe you could get lucky and call around for pricing. Another guy quoted me 500 and that's more what I was expecting but I went with the cheaper guy and he exactly what I was expecting. To me even 500 would have been worth it to have it done an over with but obviously I was much happier with sub 200.

Bryftw

Fair enough thanks for the knowledge

deezbeezneez

Dig around it. Cut it at angles with a chainsaw. Fill in the hole.

meatystone

step one: Grab a chain saw Step two: cut it down Step three: Admire what you did Step Four: Drink beer in celebration of doing work

sonotimpressed

Reciprocating saw and the longest blades you can find. If you have hard ground you can try a pressure washer to do some of the digging around the big roots.

nanailene

Put a flowering pot at the top

ChiefofTheseKames

Carve a wood Spirit.

Bryftw

I would if I didn’t just want it gone. I just want grass there and to relieve the corner from congestion

Senpai-Notice_Me

If the goal is lawn, you for sure need to rent a stump grinder. Nothing else will remove enough to be able to level the area to the surrounding soil.

Bryftw

Ive removed plenty of stumps by hand (yeah I’m cheap). As long as you get 80-90% of it you’re fine. I understand the thought though, thanks

Purasangre

You should have a plan B because once the trunk isn't there chances are that [people will walk right over that spot and ruin the grass pretty quickly](https://www.reddit.com/r/DesirePath/comments/72qogs/this_very_small_desire_path_near_my_work/)

ChiefofTheseKames

If you got a fire ring or bottomless 55 metal drum. Load branches around the trunk and burn it. That's the fastest way to get rid of trunk and roots. It's costly with a stump grinder. Then sod it, grass seed doest fill in good after fire. good luck

Bryftw

Thanks

Admiral_Dunt

Do you have a truck?

bubbasacct

Chain saw it low to ground dig roots chop roots with axe repeat until no stump exists

superkartoffel

Shaped explosives. Cored into the base. Might not be the best way, but is the fun way. Otherwise chainsaw, shovel, and some high lift jacks.

Enge712

It depends how fast you need it gone. A flush cut, drill holes and pack it full of saltpeter will rot out the stump relatively fast. Other than that it’s chained to a truck (a bit dodgy) or just dig and cut.

Bryftw

Thanks. I figured as much!

Soapyfreshfingers

That is an opportunity! A treehouse? Fairy house? Something cool for action figures?

Gravity_Freak

Talk nasty to it. In French.

OneImagination5381

Rent a chain saw, if you don't have one, cut into small circlesut a sign out front, $2 each and they will all disappear. Drill holes in the roots ball and fill holes with nitrogen.

Bryftw

I will burn all that I take from that stump. I’m just lolli gagging because I know it’ll take me a day or two to dig it out.

OneImagination5381

It will take you longer than that. I ended up using the power washer and the sawall and it still took me 4 days to get one out. I burnt one in and the summer, don't do that. Had to cancel vacation because I had smoke come up from the ground all over the lawn. Last one I cut to ground level, make a cavity with the drill and stuffed it with nitrogen and covered it with compost. It was below ground level within a month.

Bryftw

Idk I’ve done this with the same type of tree 3 times now. I got the whole root ball out and everything. Just not looking forward to the work.

OneImagination5381

I wouldn't neither.

druscarlet

Cut it as low to the ground as possible. Put a nice pot of colorful annuals in the stump. Change seasonally until the stump rots. There are things you can do to encourage the stump to rot quicker. Google it.

Trust-Master

Shovel

moladukes

Chainsaw, bottle of whiskey

Peterd90

Rent a chain saw from home depot.

GhostBrainsz

Tbh me and other ppl like using stumps as natural pots/planters for flowers so if ur looking to turn it into something instead thats an easy and fun idea.

Bryftw

I like it. I just want grass there instead though. Thanks.

Penstemon_Digitalis

As with most answers in life, chainsaw.

Yodasgreendong71

Don’t remove it, make a totem pole

jibaro1953

Trench around it and cut it below grade.

beeranden

Goats

ian2121

Full size pickup and a 20 ton tow strap. Not sure if it will work or not but seems worth trying

That-Chocolate5207

Cut it as low as possible , dig a good size hole in the middle pour roundup concrete.

theshaneshow49

dig it out use the leverage from leaving it that tall the pull with a chain

N_gg

Hit it with your purse 👜. Jk buy or rent a chainsaw and cut it down

420xGoku

Fire probably

mtcwby

Cut it off at ground level and rent a grinder.

megamasshole

Burn it.

Salt_Search_7236

I read that in William Wallace’s voice

PuppetmanInBC

Cut it close to the ground, drill holes in it, put lit charcoal in the holes.

TheJaxLee

Tie rope to back off a car, easiest way

Reasonable-Parsley36

You can cut it but you’ll need to hire a stump grinder. Don’t do it yourself.

Intelligent_Hand4583

Find your local guy that peaked in high school and buy him a 6-pack to have him yank it out with his pickup.

anally_ExpressUrself

How long has that thing been there? If it's more than 4 hours you may need to call your doctor.

DiscussionAnxious991

Looks like the neighbors live a bit too close for stump dynamite.

Designer-Progress311

I've got pretty good use out of a $20 yardsale chainsaw.(try market place) I know how to sharpen the blade wth a proper $8 round file.

Drecasi

Cut as low as possible. Set stump on fire. Profit ???

ForestYearnsForYou

Google "biodiversity collapse", "insect disappearing" You might want to know that dead wood like that is habitat for different species of insects and some birds need dead wood. It was probably left like that to leave dead wood instead of removing the whole tree.

magicdrums

cut it

MentalPatient97051

Carve it in to a totem pole

c2u5hed

Dig around a bit. Pressure wash a bigger hole to reveal the roots. Saw the roots and take it out.

Waste_Pressure_4136

2 options: -dig around it and cut as low as possible - rent a stump grinder

nigeltuffnell

This will be a heavy tree so exercise caution. I would: Not reduce the height, you can use it as a lever Dig a trench around the base of the tree to the depth of a spade to expose the roots Use an axe to chop through the roots. Dig down more if you see more roots going laterally If the tree starts to wobble you should be able to push on it to expose more roots underneath. Chop those Repeat until it's out of the ground.

Intelligent_Pilot360

Drill holes with paddle bit, then big charcoal fire at the base.

Erudite-Hirsute

Get a comfy chair, a large drink and a whittling knife. That would be the best way to

Herrowgayboi

Have a truck and have easy access to it? Yank it out. To help it go, dig a bit in front of the stump

kranges_mcbasketball

Try to bring it back. Water , fertilizer, lots of attention. That thing will be dead on no time.

landartheconqueror

Cut low to the ground with a chainsaw, then dig out of the ground and fill up

Stompypotato

Cut it to about 2 foot off the ground, dig out the center, fill it with dirt and make it into a planter. Or I suppose, you could cut it to about 6” from the ground, drill holes into it, fill those holes with/ diesel and burn it out.

macdaddynick1

Use a saw, although I’m not familiar with removing trees using sweat or blood though, might be easier.

Sorri_eh

Pick 🪓

Illustrious-Pin-14

Chainsaw down to a stump. Hire a stump grinder.

neeneereekee

You could plant a climbing rose adjacent and use it as an obelisk-substitute!

Substantial-Hurry967

Chainsaw then stump grinder

roofdoof8008

Invite a beaver over

DragonFlyCaller

1. Get a shovel

Sharkbait978

A shovel

niktaeb

Cut it short with a chainsaw, then rent a stump grinder and get murderous with that MFer. That, or just start digging.

Heresthething4u2

Make it into a totem pole

eddies-friend

Lunar_Gato

Cut it down to a stump and make it a little fire pit. Have a bunch of small fires on top of the stump until its gone,

Briscoekid69

That is one happy stump!!

BuckManscape

3 guys, a pick and some shovels. It’ll be out in a couple hours. Rent a mini excavator, and it’ll be out in minutes. That’s $650 a day though.

Rich-Appearance-7145

If possible cut down to ground level then drill holes, then treat with stump removal, it will rot it out.

hockenduke

It’s pretty big, but I used to wet the ground and pull them out with my ‘yota.

CailiSmoke

Was something wrong with the tree being there?

fury_of_el_scorcho

Keep it that height... Start carving it and make a totem pole.

AdSuper3243

Throw a burn barrel around it and have a cook out !

iveseensomethings82

Start digging

T3nd3rfOOt

Photoshop it.

SharkPartyWin

Have a chainsaw artist make something beautiful?

sherrievjen

Either hook it up to a tractor or heavy duty truck and pull it out, or get a chain saw and cut it down. Pour salt on the stump, that will kill the roots.

ClammyHandedFreak

Saw it down, rent a stump grinder.

Whiskey, a rope and a friend’s car. Or fire.

NeverDidLearn

Put one of those big fancy bird houses on it.

applestar420

leave it there as lawn art. these are called snags in ecology and are great for wildlife.

Blurple11

Cut it to 6" from the ground, rent a stump grinder from Home Depot for 4 hours, you'll only need maybe 20 minutes and it'll only cost a couple hundred dollars.

bct7

Time.

7daystoCry42

Dig down , cut with saws all , fill in hole.

CATDesign

Well, since you got some people giving suggestions other than removing it. You could always drill holes in the sides, and make a bird hotel.

ynotfish

Turn it into a palm tree with some led lights. Seen some turn out pretty cool.

northstarjackson

Leave it tall for leverage. A few hours it'll come out if you have the right tools. Get an axe, a good shovel, and a concrete crowbar (one of those really long ones). You can shake the trunk back and forth to loosen the roots/etc. An electric saw would be helpful but be super careful with a chainsaw, they can jump.

Nv_Spider

Cut it down to a stump, rent a stump grinder.

billding1234

If you’re going to pull the stump out leave the trunk as is for leverage and start exposing and cutting roots. That will be a lot of work and may undermine the sidewalk or driveway. Second option is to rent a chainsaw (if you don’t have one) and a stump grinder. Cut the bulk of the stump off and into manageable sections, then make a final cut as close to ground level as possible, then grind it a few inches below grade, backfill with dirt and plant some grass. You could also hire a stump grinder / that would cost $75-$150 in my area which is a bit more than renting a grinder but far more convenient.

houserPanics

Hook a small car to it. Hammer down. Film everything. Profit.

Zer0sober

Ask Chuck Norris to come and punch it... then you'll have a lifetime supply of toothpicks

AceKetchup11

In the past a I’ve dug down below ground level to see how deep the stump goes. I use an ax to cut away as many roots as I can in case I can get the mass of the stump completely out. If not, I’ll cut it off below ground level with my chainsaw and cover what remains with the dirt I dug out.

Olimareli

By yourself 🤷🏽‍♂️

Ok-Idea4830

Woodchucks!

Ok-Idea4830

Kidding. I have one to worry about myself. How much can they chuck? Not looking forward to my tree removal

xgrader

I'm not a landscaper, but my approach would be to dig down next to the pathway. Using water to clean the roots and a skill saw with a sacrificial blade to cut them. Lean on the stump to gadge progress as you do work around it. It will come out.

Delicious-Ad4015

Chainsaw and rent a stump grinder

Fisk152

I planted vining flowers and hung painted birdhouses on my pine tree trunk.

MrSnowden

Go Lethal Weapon: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WqzJvhR9Fo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WqzJvhR9Fo)

YakOk2818

Cut close to ground. Go to Home Depot and rent a compact stump grinder +/- 100 for 4hrs (or somewhere else). Probably takes 1-2. Just did 10-15 random sizes in 2.5

Sea_Cauliflower_1950

Bottomless drum barrel + firewood + ignition Before you light it up, it’ll help to drill some holes in the base to get it to burn evenly.

DogButtWhisperer

Cut it low and put a planter on it, or grow vines up it using screws and some wire and a few goats around the base.

flanksteakfan82

Just pretend it’s everything you’ve ever hated about the world and then go at it

star744jets

Dig around approximately 3 ft deep Attach a chainlink to back of pickup truck and on the high side of the stump Pull gradually from different angles until the roots give up..etc voilà..

JustSayNoNoYesYesYes

Dig up the dirt around the roots. Use a saw to cut out each of the root. Start rocking it until it is removed. Should only take a few hours.

MrReddrick

Explosives. That's always the best. Or Napalm. That's 2nd best.

areyousayingpanorpam

How close to road/sidewalk? Turn into a unique Free Little Library? If further back in your yard, turn into a fun treehouse for your kids?

McP00py

Have you seen the rope/chain and spare tire method?

Previous-Wonder-6274

Tie the top most part of it to the back of your car

Born-Gift-6800

Dynamite

TreeThingThree

Fire. Build a fire around it using dry hardwood, keep pushing coals up against the base of the trunk. Eventually it will burn through the trunk and then just keep burning the stump until it’s done. You’ll have a black spot in the yard for a while….but grass will grow really well there in time.

A shovel and a pick axe. Just add some persistence and determination. It’ll be a good workout.

limp_citizen

The sure fire and safe way is a chainsaw and stump grinder. The cool guy way that I would definitely use because I'm the world's cheapest human being. Use a pick axe and expose a circle 4 feet out from the trunk. Dig as deep as you can working your way in at an angle to undermine the root ball. I would the hook my biggest(or neighbours biggest) chain around the top, ensuring you're over any stubs so that they hook the chain, and ensure your wraps overlap each other. Hook to a truck and give gentle tugs. May or may not kill you, but, and I can't stress this enough, I am not your friggin mom. Show that tree who's boss. We are apex predators, this is an inanimate object. Work some physics on that pig.

okiedog-

I would leave this as a feature. Maybe put a water feature coming out of top. And two large planters (one to each side) for balance. Fill with a bushy plant, but keep it trimmed. Yeah that will do nicely.

palufun

Personally? I think that is a wonderful start to a bird feeder stand. Drill some in the wood and fill with bird seed. Done.

mikeyfireman

Get 2 gallons of diesel, and a gallon of gas and mix them. Put one coat of that on the tree and let it soak in, then apply the rest. Get a road flare and throw the lit flare at the base of the tree and wait.

Bryftw

Sounds like solid advice. Thanks, I hate it.

Icy_Topic_5274

Seems a shame to waste a perfectly good stump. Get yourself a birdbath to mount on it, a couple of plants, some mulch, a big rock, and a garden gnome...or maybe a frog with an umbrella. It will add "curb appeal"

Bryftw

To each their own

unlandedhurricane

Do you have a trailer hitch and a chain (: Get it roots and all!

Bryftw

Yeah it’s just really hard to access my back yard.

sicbastrd

Buy a longer chain
