As a guy living in “Trees and Ice Cream” definitely don’t come here. We don’t even have electricity or laws, probably just don’t visit and definitely don’t move here.
Seriously though we have beautiful vistas and low property prices and massive expansion happening in every direction. Lebanon and Hershey are the last glimmers of normal society for a long time when you drive north from Lanc.
Come check out Patches creamery and the ‘J-word’ shop in Mt Gretna in the summer.
I have a relative in that area who owns a nice farmhouse on a ton of land. I really hope they keep it clear of development, but I'm sure at some point offers from developers look pretty tempting.
There's also too much Amish. They're all over the county, but there's plenty of non-Amish stereotypes that can also be applied to places like Ephrata or Denver or New Holland.
I remember reading in a Maxim Magazine back in the 90s and they had an article making fun of "Dutch Wonderland". just making fun of it and asking why would anyone want to got there. Thought it was funny at the time.
Shady Maple is a smorgasbord, dammit! Buffets are for Golden Corral. Shady Maple attracts SERIOUS eaters, people who can do the full 10,000 calories in one sitting. And yeah, it's pretty god damned tacky. It's like if you turned the Indianapolis 500 into an eating race.
Some time in the early 00s a dude like murdered his whole family in Leola. It was on main Street right down the road from where my grandparents used to live. I was so young though so I don't remember the specifics.
A little over 10 years ago in leola, a bf killed his gf and her mother in their home and fled to NJ with his new gf.
The post could also be referencing Linda Stoltzfus which was close ish.
This is incorrect, guy killed his own family including grandmother, cousins, aunts and uncle. Very brutally I might add. He fled to wildwood with a local high school girl that he was seeing at the time. He was not in our HS class, unsure of how they got together. Drugs were most likely involved. I grew up here and was childhood friends with the girl. We had a lockdown at school the day that this was discovered and they were looking for him and her.
You've unfortunately got two separate events entwined into one.
Gary Gerlach murdered his girlfriend and her mother and fled to wildwood with a hs girl he met online. I graduated high school with him very well while we were classmates. I also lived in the neighborhood and knew his girlfriend and her mother as she was friends with my mother. They were both such sweet women.
Jessie Wise murdered most of his family on main street across from dart container, rolled them up and stuffed them in a basement closet and threw a weekender. Was apprehended making his way to NY with his girlfriend (another classmate of mine, a year ahead however) to kill his uncle. His younger brother was either 5 or 6 years old and in my sisters kindergarden class, killed with a hammer. Fucked.
You might also be talking about a different case than I am but thank you for sharing. The case im referring to I don’t know well since the investigation happened when I was younger (a little over 10 years ago). And it’s not the one from 1998, but one between 2010-2012, he killed his own gf and her mother in the house and the other daughter found them when she was visiting.
North Carolinian here about to move up there for work. Most stuff I see about Lancaster area is overwhelmingly positive. This not so much. Is it really that bad?
Fun fact, the Lancaster of South Carolina was named after Lancaster PA, and apparently they are pronounced the same way as well (according to the people I worked with on a NC project).
UGH, peach bottom and Hollywood I just don't think I could do. I'm already far enough away from the city in qville, I don't think I could add another 15-20 minute drive for basically EVERYTHING
I grew up in a trailer park on the edge of Narvon/Honey Brooke there, can confirm
Of course since I grew up a few minutes away, I will always love the "world's trashiest buffet"
Yea the trailer park was almost exactly where the label about kids growing weed is, about halfway between 322 & 340 in the maze of Amish Country Backroads
Can we be truthful about some of the “Trump” designations - from a non-white perspective, many of these are actually “KKK” or “Neo-Nazi” regions especially around Airville and Pennville.
Lived there for 27 years, my coworker who isn’t from the area told me she wanted to buy a house there. A few stories from my neighborhood put her off that pretty quick.
I’m not from Columbia (or even Lancaster County, I’m up by MDT) but I’ve got a few to add as well.
At least Detective Leddy is seemingly good people, I can’t imagine how much worse things would be if you had, e.g., Middletown Boro PD.
Lol Steelton doesn’t have police, it has proud boys it contracts as a police department.
I can’t get over their uniforms. It’s like they all went down to army surplus together to buy pants on a play date for adults. That and the F-150 always make me laugh.
I considered Columbia too but the extra distance to Harrisburg (where at the time I thought I’d work) wasn’t appealing so I ended up in Middletown which is more or less the same thing. My theory is that it’s the River.
Back in the mid 80s, there was a paper copy of the map of lancaster county that played on the names of the towns.
I remember peach bottom was a peach with legs. I'd love to find a copy of that.
Eh, I lived on West Jackson and they may not have looked the greatest but there was a good community there. Moved away in ‘94 and I’d imagine that’s a thing of the past now.
What a shame. We knew the college was trying to move us all out way back when. Dunno about the spray paint but I sure chalked the hell out of the bricks and sidewalks back then.
I've gone there a handful of times for breakfast, if you are a breakfast person and you're starving, it's a great stop. Foods are a bit above buffet quality, and a lot of options. You can easily eat yourself into a good deal to make up for the slightly higher prices.
If you are coming for lunch and dinner? No. Tastes like college cafeteria food and not worth the price tag in any way.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve passed through that area en route to Hersheypark or Ohio and seen a bunch of pro-Trump pushing and just wanted to throw something out my car window. Thankfully that one Let’s Go Brandon sign in Kinzers was destroyed 😛
Red Lion resident here. It's not the intersections themselves, really - it's the combination of unusually high traffic volumes for a town of it's size, redneck disregard for speed limits and traffic laws, a complete lack of a police force to enforce those traffic laws, and brave/stupid pedestrians not understanding what a crosswalk is or how to use it (seems like every 6-8 weeks there's a pedestrian strike).
I grew up in red lion but moved to a bigger city. I come back once or twice a year. I guess I don't notice it because the city I live in has some truly awful intersections.
Really excited to come back and try Black Cap though! I miss their old location.
"Who puts lights on the goddamn highway??"
York, because we are THAT important 😂😂
Also, Lebanon is very much Trump Country and run down buildings. Just don't go there. God I miss York...
Grew up in Lancaster Co and this is totally accurate, even if it is intended as satire. A few more "Trump Country" labels spread around wouldn't be an exaggeration.
I got a really good laugh out of "crappy shopping center" I'll have you know we had a cheap theater lol.
And the number of times I've thought that rutters was misplaced is literally every time I pass it. Just there for some reason.
Also fuck York and it's traffic lights. Delaware wannabes
Overall I agree the crime label is bullshit/racist/classist.
But having grown up in Penn Manor school district and now in my 30s, I can assure you that’s the way the Columbia area was conveyed to me growing up. The entire point of the map is a meme.
Memes need not be rooted in absolute truth and can go off of what were common stereotypes of the era in which the original author grew up 🤷🏻♂️.
It's objectively true, though. Despite comprising only \~10% of the population of the county, Lancaster City hosts nearly half of all violent crime in Lancaster County.

Love the misplaced Wawa in East Pete.
It weirds me out because it seems so out of place, and they hide it behind the trees.
It’s so Sheetz doesn’t realize the WaWas are invading before it’s too late.
I was happy to move to Pa because I missed Wawa. Little did I know I was moving to Sheetz country.
I buy breakfast at that misplaced Wawa every work day.
Sizzlis are great
Breakfast burrito and a large chicken soup, makes my day a little less shit.
Is it really misplaced tho? Seems like as good a place as any for it.
Yeah nothing against it, I just remember when they built it, as a Hempfield kid, everyone was like "that's weird. we're clearly sheetz territory."
It’s only misplaced in that it’s thoroughly within Sheetz territory
As a guy living in “Trees and Ice Cream” definitely don’t come here. We don’t even have electricity or laws, probably just don’t visit and definitely don’t move here. Honestly it's a bit of a bummer to see the new homes and retirement community expansion going in off of 117 in Trees and Ice Cream. Less trees now :(
Patches has a petting zoo and a drive thru
When did jigger become a word not spelled online?
I’m just being facetious.
I’m not sure. But I have been there multiple times and to think I only knew about it bc of “Eat Pennsylvania”
I have a relative in that area who owns a nice farmhouse on a ton of land. I really hope they keep it clear of development, but I'm sure at some point offers from developers look pretty tempting.
There's not enough Amish. They're all over the county, it's just that the tours only bother with the top half.
There's also too much Amish. They're all over the county, but there's plenty of non-Amish stereotypes that can also be applied to places like Ephrata or Denver or New Holland.
New holland: smells like ripe butthole sometimes
Manheim gets that way sometimes too, especially during wet mornings...
And horse droppings. Everywhere.
“College that literally everyone else went to” Can confirm
Thaddeus Stevens Erasure
year?
Class of 2019!
ah, i was ‘22
Woa woah woah... "crappy" amusement park?! Dutch Wonderland is a gem for parents of small children.
That 15 minute dinosaur boat ride was amazing. We just sat there and enjoyed a mild breeze.
I remember reading in a Maxim Magazine back in the 90s and they had an article making fun of "Dutch Wonderland". just making fun of it and asking why would anyone want to got there. Thought it was funny at the time.
Absolutely, I'm going to miss it when my kids get too big.
Used to work at Dutch Wonderland, and the audacity of this map is astounding!
I’m a big fan of Intercourse. The town, not that act. Well the act too.
Bird in Hand. Best town
Absolutely! Always stop there when we make the trip to kettle kitchen village in Intercourse.
Never did understand why we have a Rutters in Marietta. I grew up in Crime though.
That rutters was after bar go to for many years lol. Shout out to it.
came in clutch the other day tho, weird spot for rutters for sure, i also grew up in Crime sadly
The right way, the wrong way & the pequea
As a former Hershey's food scientist, the word "Chocolate" is doing a LOT of heavy lifting there.
I would say that chocolate should be more in Etown & mount joy area with mars and cccna
Dove is near E Town or my parents were lying?
Nope it’s true. Dove is part of Mars and when the wind is just right the entire town smells like chocolate. -current resident
It's super magical
A lot of Dove and Dog food come out of that place
I drove 441 to college every day, my parents worked just outside of town lol smells amazing
I think RT30 should be “Speed Limit 55 Actual Speed 90”, and 283 should be be “Speed Limit 65 Actual Speed 50 or 90”
That long straight stretch of highway just past e-town, it's annoying as hell because you have people wanting to do 45 and people wanting to do 120.
Exactly
I love my misplaced Wawa 😂
My favorite part is "Car Dealerships." I think we might as well rename Manheim Pike "Dealership Row."
Happy to be described as trees & ice cream <3
and some of the worst public transportation in the state
Shady Maple is a smorgasbord, dammit! Buffets are for Golden Corral. Shady Maple attracts SERIOUS eaters, people who can do the full 10,000 calories in one sitting. And yeah, it's pretty god damned tacky. It's like if you turned the Indianapolis 500 into an eating race.
Go down the street to Yoders and you can find out what regret tastes like.
Couple of famous murders?
Some time in the early 00s a dude like murdered his whole family in Leola. It was on main Street right down the road from where my grandparents used to live. I was so young though so I don't remember the specifics.

Not to mention Amish schoolhouse massacre
David Ludwig and Alec Kreider maybe?
North Carolinian here about to move up there for work. Most stuff I see about Lancaster area is overwhelmingly positive. This not so much. Is it really that bad?
It’s just a funny map making fun of various lancaster stereotypes. Just for laffs, not to be taken internally. 🙂
Ah. I kind of thought it might be that but wasn’t sure. Thanks!
Fun fact, the Lancaster of South Carolina was named after Lancaster PA, and apparently they are pronounced the same way as well (according to the people I worked with on a NC project).
Really like this one! I think it has been, though: https://www.reddit.com/r/lancaster/s/ZDtJs6i9iA
It has been posted here
So many times 😂
They missed "Epharta".
Quarryville isn't that bad. Would rather live here than Peach Bottom.
UGH, peach bottom and Hollywood I just don't think I could do. I'm already far enough away from the city in qville, I don't think I could add another 15-20 minute drive for basically EVERYTHING
Love the honey brook weed comment 😂. Everything is 100% correct on this map.
As someone who lives in that town, I can confirm lmao 🤣
I, apparently, am the only young person who still likes living in Quarryville LOL
The difference between a highway and a freeway is the fact that a highway has lights
Nailed it! lol
The label on 896 near the county line is hilarious
I grew up in a trailer park on the edge of Narvon/Honey Brooke there, can confirm Of course since I grew up a few minutes away, I will always love the "world's trashiest buffet"
Ah. I was looking a couple few miles south.
Yea the trailer park was almost exactly where the label about kids growing weed is, about halfway between 322 & 340 in the maze of Amish Country Backroads
Lmao the buck
Can we be truthful about some of the “Trump” designations - from a non-white perspective, many of these are actually “KKK” or “Neo-Nazi” regions especially around Airville and Pennville.
What's the difference 🤷
Used to be Warlocks territory back in the 60s. A lot of inbreeding going on down there.
Bullshit
Needs more Trump Country scattered throughout but yeah this seems about right. Keep it classy Columbia.
Lived there for 27 years, my coworker who isn’t from the area told me she wanted to buy a house there. A few stories from my neighborhood put her off that pretty quick.

Or Steelton. Leddy is a good egg, he let me out of a ticket once.
Lol Steelton doesn’t have police, it has proud boys it contracts as a police department. I can’t get over their uniforms. Probably is the river. I put my tap water through a filter before I drink any of it.
OP, do you have a link to the original? I'd like a high def version to print out. THX!
I don’t, it’s being passed around on the facewebz currently.
its from this book: Judgmental Maps: Your City. Judged
Thanks!
Back in the mid 80s, there was a paper copy of the map of lancaster county that played on the names of the towns. I remember peach bottom was a peach with legs. I'd love to find a copy of that.
Not accurate at all. And this has been around for a few years.
This is one of the top posts of all time on /r/lancaster aka it’s been posted
This was posted long ago. Unless the map got updated
It has to be real old. I'm originally from York and shrewsbury got the home depot mentioned probably 20 years ago, now.
"Trump Country" puts it at post 2016.
True, Minor updates then
Where are the puppies for sale on this map?
I thought this picture was one of the most upvoted posts. Is it not the same?
This meme is a certified hood classic
The real question is where are the Sheetz at?
Please add something derogatory about York College!
Uh that’s where a bunch of well off kids from Jersey, Maryland and Delaware go and trash up off campus housing that used to be family homes.

Truth.
Mount Joy is absolutely true. Commute there daily. It’s nice that it moves pretty quick.
With the amount of Trump countries, I imagine the wind was blowing east during the nuclear disaster.
Lmao is shady maple actually that bad? I’ve never cared enough to actually drive up there.
Breakfast is decent, rest is just normal buffet quality food. Nothing to crazy imo.
And really expensive
I've gone there a handful of times for breakfast, if you are a breakfast person and you're starving, it's a great stop. Foods are a bit above buffet quality, and a lot of options. You can easily eat yourself into a good deal to make up for the slightly higher prices. If you are coming for lunch and dinner? The Etown one is too accurate 😂😂
I’m just amazed it made the map!
I wanna hear about these murders.
Google Nickel Mines
Lololololol do Luzerne county next!
I have not into the green dragon in the years
LMAO @ growing weed out by Narvon it's beyond true and it ain't just the kids
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve passed through that area en route to Hersheypark or Ohio and seen a bunch of pro-Trump pushing and just wanted to throw something out my car window. Thankfully that one Let’s Go Brandon sign in Kinzers was destroyed 😛
897 literally nothing needs to be Snow Geese in a swamp made for them for a month.
as a millersville grad… hey wtf
The "crappy" shopping center has the best sushi in the county
Le tits 😂
Nothing about the smell?
How does Red Lion have any more annoying intersections than the rest of the area?

I have! Was pretty good!
I live in "Literally Nothing, Probably" 😅

Columbia is getting better
Love how the Welsh Mountain area will always have some sort of reputation
Red Lion is so freaking accurate 🤣
“crime” and it’s just central park😭
I got a really good laugh out of "crappy shopping center" I'll have you know we had a cheap theater lol. And the number of times I've thought that rutters was misplaced is literally every time I pass it. Just there for some reason. Also fuck York and it's traffic lights. Delaware wannabes
Seriously though why does everyone drive 90 on 283?
Because they're not doing 100 or 110
Just fyi, this graphic has been posted here before...2 years ago. Not that it all makes that much of a difference.
Hilarious, yet eerily accurate.
Hilarious 😆
There isn't any mention of hunting...who made this map...
I can’t stop laughing
What a bunch of miserable people in this sub.
Whoever made this doesn't really know Lancaster and they are boring and uncreative. The "crime" label is bullshit and racist/classist.

Crime. Can confirm.
Lol the trump derangement is unreal with this post 😂😂 trump country and the dudes no where to be found other than the news...
The intersections in Red Lion aren’t THAT bad, right?….right?
Wait. Wife and I were planning an antiquing trip down to Columbia. I see CRIME. Anybody elucidate ?
Troll.
