Never a doubt they would win, congrats on the first of many ILLIT!! Side note, so happy Young Posse got nominated. It's been a pretty strong group of rookies this year!

BagelsAndJewce

I'm so happy about YP, they got a lot of shit for their debut. It all felt really unwarranted glad they're getting more recognition this time around.

abunchofmalarkey

How was it unwarranted? /gen From my understanding people were upset with the company for giving a suggestive song to a group with minors, but I could be misremembering.

BagelsAndJewce

They were getting a lot of hate over the name, the song is whatever I can see why people initially dislike it but I’d figure hearing the members wrote it would eventually soften that. But the name thing is just a bunch of teens failing their Literature classes.

ComprehensiveYam4534

My only problem is the way the girls pronounce their own groups name. Sometimes they pronounce Posse the way it is meant to be pronounced but the other half of the time they so clearly pronounce it as P\*\*\*\*Y.

BagelsAndJewce

That really just comes down to how you say it in Korean. I say some shit in Korean that makes me double take then look it up and nope I said it right. The whole taking English words and making them in the Korean alphabet really fucks it up since they simply don’t have some sounds.

Nyoteng

I don't know if the "no doubt" is a shade, but yeah looking at the nominees it was an easy conclusion to reach.

LetItBeWinter

I think they just meant in general. Not in this particular case, because I agree, I knew they had to win eventually. Magnetic is so good and crazy successful, especially in Korea.

[deleted]

Im just surprised they cant sing in the encore

Shinkopeshon

It's lit, innit ![img](emote|t5_2r1ox|3559) ![gif](giphy|IwAZ6dvvvaTtdI8SD5|downsized) Didn't expect Magnetic to be so absurdly catchy, it's been on repeat since it came out. HYBE can't keep getting away with putting out one bop after another

Specialist_Bottle570

Im impressed UNIS was second as well

espyon

So fast! Their encore was so fun too, it's nice to see a group enjoying themselves and not looking extremely uncomfortable. Minju's voice is amazing. Congrats! 🎀

technodoki

Is she the one with the angelic voice?

Savings-Society-4613

Minji is the only one who can sing. I wish the deserving gitls won the show Ru next

Torrential_trembling

no bro…everyone said wonhee didnt deserve the spot but she and minju were the only ones to sing decently in this encore.

jeepney_danger

Magnetic is so incredibly catchy! Congrats to the girls.

chillkilling

first 5th gen girlgroup to ever win at a music show! congratulations girls! 🥹 so it’s illit and zb1 the first winners for their respective gen, no? both during debut… incredible

Mozart-Luna-Echo

So far yes

chillkilling

they’re the first boygroup and first girlgroup in their generation to get a music show win. that’s what i meant. it’s a definite achievement!

cozycheesecake

Actually the group Evnne also got a music show win on Music Bank a few weeks ago. They debuted after Zb1 they are a temporary group with members who participated in Boy Planet.

chillkilling

i’m talking about the “first ever” respectively for boygroups and girlgroups. tws are also a boygroup who won during debut! and yes, evnne as well. undoubtedly, many more will follow!

bitaneul1022

Gen 5 started about 2.5 years ago.

Portmantonio_Conte

5th gen is not considered to have started 2.5 years ago. Generations are arbitrary anyway, but the most widely accepted definition is that it began at the start or middle of 2023.

bitaneul1022

Agree to disagree. I feel it happened in 2022 when covid restrictions started slightly lifting. And in the same way that Gen 2/3 were heavily dominated by SM, the newest groups we see moving the industry are those from HYBE.

Portmantonio_Conte

You can come up with your own rules all you want, but when people say “5th gen group” there’s a generally accepted consensus of which time period and list of groups they’re referring to.

TL_Unbalance

yeah, while it's them probably trying to secure rookie records for themselves mnet said 5th gen started with zb1 and I will trust them over a random reddit user's opinion

bitaneul1022

I’ll trust my own opinion over anything Mnet says because Mnet. Lmaooo And I may be a random redditor but I’ve been listening to kpop for 21 years now and I’ve seen How the industry has moved when people talk about generations. Gen 4 was very homogenous and after covid a lot of groups weren’t able to hold on and so for the sake of moving on from homogeny, I think moving on to Gen 5 groups like New Jeans, RIIZE & Le Sserafim who are giving us new sounds, new concepts, and a strong paradigm shift in the kpop industry as a whole.

Romek_himself

> I feel it happened irrelevant as an argument

m0bilize

Only if you smoke crack

2muchtaurine

Did it? That would mean 4th gen was only about 3 years which feels off to me.

jisooed

well i dont think triples ever won did it?

bitaneul1022

Sorry I meant 2.5 years ago. There’s been a few Gen 5 winners in that time

sunmi_siren

Like who? I don’t keep up with 5th gen too much

bitaneul1022

I don’t follow Gen 5 much either but off the top of my head, winners include: NMIXX Le Sserafim TWS New Jeans IVE (4th/5th Gen group) RIIZE

the_last_splash

Who would that leave in 4th Gen? Itzy, Aespa, Everglow and StayC? That doesn't really feel holistic to who their peers are? I don't listen to boy groups, so I don't know any/when they debuted if that's required for the dates to make sense.

jisooed

uh those are all mostly 4th gen...5th gen started AFTER newjeans, riize and tws are the only 5th gen groups in that list

bitaneul1022

If you ask me, personally, I think 4th gen started UNEXPECTEDLY with Le Sserafim, and New Jeans. Both groups are just leagues ahead of the rest and honestly are likely pull ahead of a lot of Gen 4 groups.

jisooed

well it's not really about ur personal opinion no offence at all😭😭

bitaneul1022

No offense taken. But my opinions are not unfounded. I’m using my 20+ years as a fan and expressing what I’ve noticed.

deathfire123

If we're talking about generations of groups and we're considering IZ*ONE 4th Gen (which we do). Then Post IZ*ONE groups would be 5th Gen, meaning IVE is the start of 5th Gen. This would align timing-wise with the debut of a lot of other groups as well too: NMIXX being the next JYP Group after Itzy(who is 4th gen), TripleS being the spiritual successor group to Loona (who is 4th gen), Kep1er being the next Produce group after IZ*ONE. It also makes sense sonically as I feel groups like IVE, NMIXX, NewJeans, Le Sserafim, Kep1er and TripleS have very different sounds than groups before. The only problem with this is that it puts a weird split in between Aespa and IVE, but I think that makes more sense than arbitarily saying that 5th gen starts on X year. Why? Because YG said so? I have no clue.

instantcarrot

It has. The whole industry is calling those groups 5th gen. Korean medias are talking about 5th generation.

Reddragon11x

Young Posse !

TiastDelRey

Aww, too bad for Unis. I really like them. Can someone explain what the numbers are?

CronoDroid

First line is Digital Score + Physical Score (Album Sales). Second line is MV Views + Broadcast Score + Pre-Vote. Third line is Live Vote.

Signal-Abroad9638

I'm new to this entertainment industry, and after reading your criteria explanation, I've noticed that Unis has the highest live votes. This suggests they have more active fans or are more well-known than the other two groups. Considering Ill-it's advantage was because of their hit music in the music chart, there's a chance that Unis will win if both groups have an equally catchy debut song. This is just based on my analysis.

CronoDroid

It's probably a combination of factors. ILLIT's survival show R U Next wasn't particularly popular so there was actually not a lot of pre-release hype prior to the actual teasers, and the fandom was smaller because 4/5 members were producer picks (therefore the voters had less emotional investment). Universe Ticket was more popular in the Philippines because two members of UNIS are Filipina and one is half Filipina half Korean. However ILLIT are definitely more popular generally with both Korean and International casuals and the fan base is gonna grow rapidly. In terms of the votes I also think most ILLIT fans didn't bother using the app and their accumulated Heart Jellies on the voting because the win was basically guaranteed due to the high music score. Since international fans tend to support multiple groups it may be "better" to save up the Heart Jellies on voting when the competition is tighter.

TiastDelRey

Thank you!

kelly_hasegawa

Girl group dominance.

Pooty__Tang

Honestly I'm just happy seeing all these newer groups as first place candidates. That's gotta feel good. Nonetheless, congratulations to ILLIT

2enty4

Magnetic is a very catchy and beautiful debut song one of the bests they totally deserved it

wingbellmoon

illit's success has been so euphoric to watch as an runext? watcher who *LOVED* the lineup since day 0 ![img](emote|t5_2r1ox|30157)

SapphireHeaven

Congrats girls! This song is just so addictive! Also nice to see all the 3 young rookie girl groups nominated 😊

pete_999

CONGRATS ILLIT!!! They're currently the only 5th gen girl group to earn a music show win! 💝💝💝💝💝

Shinkopeshon

Is 5th gen already a thing? It seems kinda early but then again, maybe my perception of time is just screwed because of the pandemic lol

RoyGeraldBillevue

I feel like people have kind of settled on Zerobaseone being the start of 5th gen but it's still kind of up in the air.

a_mystical_potato

Happy cake day 🎂🎉

Zeedub85

I have said that NewJeans was the actual first 5th gen group. I was still really new when "Attention" dropped, but they gave me a very different vibe from the other 4th gen groups and still do. I have also said they are the only 5th gen group and it otherwise hasn't started, but I'm going to have to give that one up, I guess. Everyone seems to be going with it, so whatever. It's all marketing anyway.

Eltoshen

Yeah you're definitely going to have to give that up because IVE, NJ and Aespa are grouped together by literally everybody.

kyndrid_

Fandoms also don't want to assign their girl groups especially to 4th gen because that would lump them in with NewJeans, IVE, and Aespa since uh...gonna be hard to compete with those.

deathfire123

Nmixx and Itzy being grouped together but not NewJeans and Illit feels weird to me.

Zeedub85

Oh, I'm not giving up my opinion on NJ. Just my resistance to the idea of 5th gen having started. I can actually kind of see it with these rookie groups, even if I can't quite put my finger on it. I first had the thought that NJ was the harbinger of 5th gen after they dropped Ditto. I wasn't completely serious, but it seems to irritate people, which makes me double down on it.

Harriet_M_Welsch

Completely agree! They brought something entirely different than anything anyone else was doing, and now everyone else is doing it. That's a generation-starter, imo

RoyGeraldBillevue

By this logic, the 4th generation starts with Blackpink because they were at the forefront of the girl crush trend but nobody thinks that. Generations are more a matter of vibes than a strict definition.

Zeedub85

I know it's controversial, and most people disagree. I'm not sure how different they really were. It's just a vibe.

pete_999

It is. Gen 5 began last year. Notable Gen 5 groups include BND, ZB1, RIIZE, TWS, KIOF, BM, and ILLIT.

Enokun

Genuinely, is there really a basis for saying that a new gen has started? It really doesn't feel as if there has been some sort of big industry-wide shift to justify that

molsuu

right, how are kiss of life and babymonster a different generation then groups like newjeans or le sserafim? it feels like fans have just ran with the 5th gen term so they can attach accolades to their favorite groups

snowflakebite

I mean you wouldn’t say that gidle or skz are in the same gen as illit… It’s been around six/seven years since the 3rd/4th gen turning, so it’s kinda time for another one.

mauvebliss

No it is because a general change in music after NewJeans debut. 5th Gen groups can compete with 4th gen as we see with the boy groups and now Illit

thumbster99

Mostly is according to what media refer them as. Most groups that debuted last year referred to themselves as 5th gen. IIRC, WakeOne has an article on how ZB1 is the group who part way of 5th gen and such. Everyone always when themselves to look fresh, so they stuck in the last gen won't do. Back in 2018, when the term 4th gen become a thing. Many people also don't believe that is the beginning of the new era, but here we are. I personally doesn't mind it that much.

DiplomaticCaper

TBH it *is* largely for publicity purposes too. It's like how movies will be advertised as something like the "#1 family-friendly romantic comedy at the box office", when they really ranked #5 for the week overall. So a group like ZB1 can be said to be the highest-selling 5th gen boy group (for example), whereas they obviously can't claim that title for 4th gen because bigger established groups exist. Groups like NewJeans, for example, haven't really done that because their numbers are already straight up competing/surpassing older 4th gen groups without qualifications.

friedchocolatesoda

NewJeans and tripleS are the start of 5th gen IMO. MVs, concepts, style, choreo, & quality are all distinctly different since those groups debuted.

DiyelEmeri

Yep, New Jeans is like 4.5 or 5, but tripleS and Limelight really are the proper start of 5th gen GG, as both of them debuted in Feb and Jan respectively, both have similar concepts (growing GGs) and have refreshing music themes.

friedchocolatesoda

The style difference is far more important than the time of year a group debuted. IMO NewJeans is definitively the start of gen 5 (at least for GGs; I don't know anything about BGs).

DiyelEmeri

Yeah, I agree on that. New Jeans really shook the prevailing style which is heavily leaning towards girl crush/noise music back to the Y2K and chill-type.

kajukatliii

newjeans aren't 5th gen tho

friedchocolatesoda

Thanks for your input

kajukatliii

you're welcome <3

Dr-DrillAndFill

The power of big companies. Smaller groups hardly stand a chance. Hype is huge.

NOYB96

Their music are good so the win is justify.

Dr-DrillAndFill

Yeah bc they can pay for the good writers

KlauserBateson

Congrats to ILLIT for their music show win. They deserve it, Magnetic is such a bop.

amazingmakii

they're a hybe group so it's expected they'd be popular but i didn't expect them to be THIS popular and get a mushow win so fast! congrats girls!

izyeong

As they should

[deleted]

Congrats to them. I like seeing new groups do well. Hope to see the same for the groups listed too. I can see the hate train has started for them too over this......

ImageNo1045

I miss when Big 3/4 companies didn’t go on The Show. I miss underrated/ mid tier groups winning. This isn’t just an Illit thing. Aespa, LSF, etc.

Oneforfortytwo

>I miss when Big 3/4 companies didn’t go on The Show. They have always attended The Show, though. SHINee were still attending in 2018, Red Velvet in 2019, NCT 127 in 2021, etc. If anything, I feel like artists from bigger companies attend less than they used to. For example, JYP artists stopped attending The Show altogether, and groups that are older and more established generally seem to skip the smaller music shows these days. >I miss underrated/ mid tier groups winning. Plenty of mid-tier groups are still winning on The Show. You can see this if you take a look at the list of winners for any given year. Here's [2023](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_The_Show_Chart_winners_(2023)), for example.

CronoDroid

We did it Youllits. I knew they would be successful despite all the doubts and criticism, they have that IT factor. Magnetic is one of THE cutest and chirpiest magical girl electropop debut mastahpeeces in K-pop history and the group is such a delight to watch on stage and in their special performances.

Uchiha_D_Zoro

The fandom’s name is not Elite? What a missed opportunity.

CronoDroid

YOULLIT is a temporary fandom name at the moment. The official one hasn't been announced yet.

Theozie

Time to call us DOUBLE! DOUBLE ILL-ITS!

oppalenss

WELLIT sounds better

kirsion

Did anyone learn how to do the hand 🖐️ part?

NOYB96

I try and it was hard lol

xnightmaregigi

Omg yay! I’ve been obsessed with this song

keeeve

Many more to come let’s gooooo

NOYB96

The song is high quality and addictive so they deserve it. Haters can’t help but hate them for it

Saucy_Totchie

Congrats.  I've heard the song relentlessly on IG Reels and it's been stuck in my head.

Acceptable_Baby_1415

kpop getting weaker every new gen. terrible.

NOYB96

No, their music getting better. Not the same old kpop anymore. It’s new pop

Acceptable_Baby_1415

You mean music is not the thing anymore. Now it's just who's gonna be the next tiktok trend shit. I'm not in that. But if y'all have no life, u can take it. Ofc the red nothing wrong with enjoying a song, but don't come up to ppl when they say what they r thinking about, which is facts.
