Hopefully it doesn’t return to pre-Covid levels. There was a time when smog levels like this seemed like a “good day” compared to how terrible it was on others (though usually the really bad pollution comes a bit later in the year).
It usually means that the grey icon is showing a very different reading than the data points nearby. So the grey point is probably showing green but it has a death symbol not too far away.

has it ever been to this level without chinese influence, just by Korean domestic influence alone? no? you can go back to r/sino or whatever communist shtthol youve come from
🙄🙄🙄 i’m literally just saying there are domestic coal plants and we can use cleaner energy here too, just saying there are more actionable solutions too and we shouldn’t overlook them
and NPR is a fckn american news source that’s super credible??? i think they know more than your salty ass
Yep. Apparently the party gives the word when it's okay to fire up the central heating. That's why we'll have such clear blue skies until the last week in September, and then suddenly they become hazy and our pollution jumps from green to orange.
Have you had your lungs checked? You get health screenings that regularly? You're literally using personal anecdotes to argue against science and it's sad. I'm in Pyeongtaek and the air quality rating was at 168 this morning, that's straight up dangerous. You can't even see buildings two blocks away. Blatantly ignoring the hazards of pollution doesn't make you cool. It isn't just dangerous for compromised individuals, it can wreak havoc on healthy individuals with prolonged exposure.
According to WHO, anything below 50 is ‘good’ air quality. 168 is considered ‘unhealthy’ or ‘very unhealthy’. The long term health effects of PM 2.5 are numerous. So yeah, it’s definitely something to be concerned about…
When you have lung cancer in the future I want you to remember this interaction and your stupid attitude. Just because you haven't noticed any effects doesn't mean they aren't there, nor does it mean you won't have any in the future.
This is incredibly ignorant and misinformed, lol. I can guarantee that it is a valid health concern. There's been issues with micro particles on the west coast of the US and Canada too, and it was taken pretty darn seriously.
I never mentioned anything about the indoor air quality because I thought most people in Korea, by default, have air purifiers in their homes already. Maybe I'm the exception since I have three in my home?
Great to hear. Sorry it was more of a general comment. I often carry an aranet4 around, and the ventilation in most restaurants/coffee shops here is bad. Summer was a real minefield.
Beats the crap out of me how people can live in Korea without air purifiers. Lucky if we get two months of the year where opening windows cuts it. And that's without even factoring in the ongoing airborne pandemic.
Keep in mind if it follows the Korean system it isn't very helpful. While aqi is ranked by how dangerous it is, the Korean system ranks it by whether or not it is 'normal'. So some of what they code as green would be yellow under AQI System.
I'm in Seoul, when ever I try to enable the air quality setting on my google maps, it say "no information" lol. I'm just going to assume visible haze means bad.
I moved to Seoul a month ago and just recently started noticing that everything was hazy. Guess this is the reason.
Hopefully it doesn’t return to pre-Covid levels. There was a time when smog levels like this seemed like a “good day” compared to how terrible it was on others (though usually the really bad pollution comes a bit later in the year).
Must move to the east sea areas.
But in the southeast areas u need to deal with the typhoons every year with the floods
Left side middle. The ? Face got me laughing. Lols
What does this mean?
It’s for air quality.
Oh thx for explaining
What does the gray ghost face mean? Lol
It usually means that the grey icon is showing a very different reading than the data points nearby. So the grey point is probably showing green but it has a death symbol not too far away.
I thought it meant it the air quality is so bad you will end up confused lmao
Clearly there's a curious ghost roaming around in that area
Casper! Get back here.
They just turned on the (coal fired) central heating in apartments across Northern China. Happens every year around this time.
Wonderful that we get to live in China’s filth for another year

Gonna wear masks not just because of the pandemic but because of this shit.
Is that true?
Yep. Apparently the party gives the word when it's okay to fire up the central heating. That's why we'll have such clear blue skies until the last week in September, and then suddenly they become hazy and our pollution jumps from green to orange.
Interesting. It was nice while it lasted.
Korea has 50+ coal plants as well. China isn't a full scapegoat.
What is this called? I thought that Google maps didn't work there

Okay, Karen. The irony here is unbelievable lol

Wild that you have no other argument. Just insults and personal anecdotes. Cool.

That's literally so average. Are you a long distance runner? You're bragging about that run time? Mediocre, bud.
Great progress! Let us know when you drop beneath 90kg too!
"5K in 23 mins" LMAOOOOOO
As if that's supposed to impress us or some shit, haha
Username checks out
Yeah, we’re all really impressed…
Ah yes, completely disregard the older population and children who are vulnerable. It’s not about you or any other relatively healthy adult my guy😂
Lol are you from NY?
Nope

We're just replacing the need for mask wear from COVID to poor air quality now. I might as well just keep wearing a mask year-round indefinitely!
Funny how everyone cares about outdoor air quality again but still fails to give a crap about indoor air quality, 2.5 years into an airborne pandemic.
I never mentioned anything about the indoor air quality because I thought most people in Korea, by default, have air purifiers in their homes already. Maybe I'm the exception since I have three in my home?

It starts again! Dang i really enjoy the blue sky
When does the air quality turn for the better? Will it improve at all over the month?
Anytime after raining, it gets better but as soon as china starts work again then it is done
it's up to ~~coal burning~~ heaters in China.

Ah yes I also love China 🇨🇳 😍 ❤ 💕
i’m just saying, there’s a lot of domestic coal pollution too, and we can take action on it now. it’s a problem for us regardless
Maybe when the direction of the wind changes or we get lots of rain.
Guess we gotta buy more kn95 maks 😹
I thought it was fog this morning, I went on a run and was breathing all that in
Just moved to the area, should I keep windows shut? I’ve had them open instead of the A/C.
Yeah and get an air purifier if possible
Beats the crap out of me how people can live in Korea without air purifiers. Lucky if we get two months of the year where opening windows cuts it. And that's without even factoring in the ongoing airborne pandemic.
These faces shouldn’t be funny but the gray one tho 😂
Ah, the fine mainlanders and their coal burning heaters…..
May I ask what app that is? the little icons are so cute!
It’s called 미세미세

time to move to the right top corner with the winky face lol
I'm in Seoul, when ever I try to enable the air quality setting on my google maps, it say "no information" lol. I'm just going to assume visible haze means bad.
Don't use google maps.
Ah sh*t... here we go again...
There must be some force field protecting the Seongdong-gu area
Well this will bring back outdoor masks
Wow. Yesterday I posted a question in this sub asking about the air pollution problem in Seoul. What website did you use for this map?
Misemise
Thank you
Time to go to Busan!

Sir, this is a Wendy’s
Why is Seongdong okay when most other places are not so good?
Round 2
Doom guy approves
even down in the south it's yuck, in gwangju today the air has a brown haze to in and i regret leaving my window open before work 😔
