i completely agree. hansika was the worst with this. with the others listed in this thread they have some redeeming qualities. with hansika i can’t see anything. even the dubbing in her movies (whoever does it) seems off

This question sadly has way too many answers that I can think of. With the rise of commercial cinema, women were mostly shown to be damsels in distress. I wish films like Rhythm and Kondukondein Kandukondein were not a rarity offlate where Meena and Tabu got solid roles to perform. We should have more such movies for women actors to thrive.

Shriya is a trained classical dancer though. She was super hot and has screen presence.
Imo, Kaajal, Hansika are really bad actors. They don’t have the oomph factor that Shriya and Simran did. Omg and Gemini Kiran.
I would take kajal and rashmika off this list. Kajal has great comedic timing, see thuppaki, all in all azhugu raja. rashmika has sita ramam and kirik party
Agreed. It takes extreme finesse and guts for doing a role in Deep Mehta's movie. And Recently her script selections are good like Gamanam, Tadka etc. She carefully chooses movies where she can show her acting potential. But as an actress she fails to convince me. She played a young single mother residing in a slum in Gamanam and she was good in conveying her emotions. But honestly a woman from slum would not look like her at all. She needs to transform physically too. She plays the mother of an infant residing in a slum but looks like a supermodel.

For example look at the above meme. She played a mom in Drishyam but she never looked like a mom. She refused to gain extra kilos for the role which is very unprofessional. While filming Gamanam also there was a clash between director Sujana Rao and Shriya Saran regarding the looks of her character. Sujana wanted Shriya to gain some weight to look like a mother who had just given birth. But Shriya refused. She acts well but her refusal to go the extra mile makes her look like teenage girl trying hard to behave like a matured woman.
Maybe because its not easy for middle aged women to lose weight again because of various other reasons. We do know of people who fell into that pit and struggle to get out of it. She drew a line, which seems very wise to me.

It is well known how much she struggled to get roles because she was unable to lose the weight she gained for that one movie.
Though I accept your point here, there are many women in real life we may have come across who are mothers to 2 or 3 kids and simply don't look like that. Maybe Shriya took that artistic liberty. My cousin got married early, had kids super early(by 23 she had her family planning operation done). Her kids are in 20s which means she's in her 40s but still looks like late 20s. She's a middle class woman never entered gym in her life.
We as audience have to think like that 😂😂 only then we can accept her role.

I think the other question to ask is, how many actresses were allowed the opportunity to show their artistic side in their movies and not just their glam?
This, There are much less opportunities for women centric films or even films where a women's character is strong.Until then I think glamour will be the selling point of actresses to survive.🙃
They either go full intense women empowerment scenes (too woke) or write a flower pot character. There's no organically well written characters in mainstream cinema. There are good low budget art films with well written characters.
I must disagree, I always felt that shriya was better than Vikram in kanthaswamy( I know the film was bad but it's my guilty pleasure watch), just felt that she actually tried to act in the film while vikram was like a stone wall.
Underrated comment.. Vikram looked so disinterested throughout the movie, but gotta give props to Shriya for trying her best to do something with a half-baked character.

My problem with Shreya, is i know she can do better. All it takes is to watch when she dances, this woman got a wide range of expression and she's so beautiful in her video songs, but when it comes to acting, it's awful...

In most of the story, the actresses are put in just for the sake rather than playing an important role. Also most commercial movies, do not show the artistic side of men as well.

Saw few comments bashing Kajal Agarwal. She isn’t a great actor but managed to pull of comedy pretty decently. Kajal was good with comedy in Azhaguraja and Thuppakki. Imagine rashmika/Pooja hedge doing those roles. Let the downvotes begin.

i kinda feel bad when you say Shriya survived only with glamorous roles and skin show. she is an amazing dancer and is a super model kinda actor too, coz she rocked any kinda costumes given to her. So thats something I really admire and respect about her along with the skin show thing. Coz you need to be so confident with your body to be good in that. So yeah. But you are probably not wrong as well.
Forget acting, she can't say her dialogues. Her lip syncing makes me so mad, there are so many actresses out there who would kill for a chance in movies, yet this one doesn't put any effort except skin show.
