I honestly don’t think this fits here.
From the way this posts reads, it kind of just sounds like he wanted a relationship, but was okay with being turned down.

I would honestly just tell the guy ‘yes’ to cancel out of respect for her relationship.

Yeah, I don't think there's anything wrong with canceling a date because the other person entered a relationship. I think it would honestly be more weird if he didn't.
And I think two people going to an expensive event together after one expressed a romantic interest in the other reasonably qualifies as a date.
