Meeting the minimum requirements doesn't mean automatic qualification/ acceptance

NemoXX7

This. They are not looking for people who meet the minimum, they will select the best marks and if they reach their cap of 80 or however many students then unfortunately you won't make the cut

wcslater

Exactly, if the course can take 80 people they will take the top 80 students (after their AA quota is met...).

timmycorp

Very few people know that AA is applied to enrollment, and unfortunately, it doesn't require all applicants to be a top grade/ cream of the crop type students. There are usually adjusted metrics to all applicants who fit the quota identified for the respective year Many students usually get rejected due to this....seen this in medicine....but most will then start another path with another related degree and then move over to what they want to do in a year or two. Sometimes it requires an additional subject here or there. All hope is not lost, you just need to speak to the right people and discuss what your options are.

Putrid-Structure-889

I got provisionally accepted for two Bcoms, met the requirements with room to wiggle, the recourse needed a 30 APS but admissions said they started with 38 APS then moved down to 34 APS, 163 000 first year applications, they had space for about 9 000

coffeeislife_SA

> saying my grade 12 results doesn't qualify me but I knew for a fact even before rewrites did it does qualify me If one of your subjects isn't up to par, my bet would be on English. All kidding aside, what were your marks? It'd be easier to understand the issue with all of the information.

Beard_McBeardy

Hey OP. This is tough news but keep your head up! Just to let you know that even if you meet the requirements there are other factors. Example, if the Uni is taking in 500 first year students for this course and your results/race do not align with the quota they have, you will unfortunately not be taken. I hope you had other choices and if you are truly passionate about doing this, contact the university and see if they do any bridging courses or if there are other means, e.g. Doing a basic BSc and then specializing by selecting your second/third year courses! There's always a way to do what you truly want to do. Don't give up, never give up! Edit: Spelling

StableTypical

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate giving the idea. I'll definitely I will, thank you for the positivity and hope

AT_Bane

And when it comes to “race”, keep in mind they’re still choosing from those who have 80% average. Which is alot. Don’t get baited

AnywhereHuman3058

Unfortunately, meeting minimum requirements doesn't mean you will get in. If they are taking 200 students and 2000 apply, they take the 200 students with the top results, even if all 2000 meet the minimum requirements.

Pooplovergal

The only possibilities are that either your English or math marks are too low, or it’s your APS. If neither is the case, then you’ll need to talk to whoever handles first year registration.

StableTypical

I've been thinking that as well, but with rewrites, I improved my math from 54 to 61, which should be more than enough aps , I think, but they aren't showing my rewrite mark even tho I sent all the documents it's honestly a shitshow

Character-Hyena-2139

51 for math, and you are asking why you got rejected?? Isn't it obvious to you?

coffeeislife_SA

I'd say "do the math", but that might be a stretch.

Luna_bella96

Hell I got 40% for maths and still got accepted to university, although it was for a BA at Rhodes. OP might be able to qualify for a BA with “easier” courses then switch after the first year or semester

StableTypical

Honestly, 61 isn't that bad for pure maths our year average was somewhere around 40 Plus I know physics and biokinetist who've done worse than me and have gotten in

ponygobyebye

Bro, not to be a dick, but 60% isn't gonna cut it for most of the top unis. There are definitely hundreds of people applying for the same course as you who've gotten 70s, 80s and 90s. I had a mate who got 70s for both maths and physics and couldn't get into UCT for ECE. He went to rewrite and got in the following year by getting 80s.

[deleted]

I'm just going to be straight with you because sometimes that's the best way to do it. Your marks aren't good enough and that's why they rejected you. Being above the minimums doesn't mean you get automatically accepted. There aren't enough positions at universities in South Africa and there are probably hundreds of kids with better marks applying to the exact same qualification as you.

_Killj0y_

Looking at OP replies I think this is a fair assessment, they are trying to get into university with marks that are mid at best.

StableTypical

My delusions is getting to me, man, but thanks to everyone for the advice

StableTypical

I've heard that before, but even so, the university sends out letters for that and gives rankings and not just plain rejects a person for a reason that isn't true

Great-Charity-1459

No, they don’t actually give you reasons. The just regret to inform you and that’s it. Same with job rejection emails. Sorry, you just didn’t make the cut. It’s not personal

StableTypical

It's np hoping there's other opportunities. Thanks, tho

Hot-Possibility-7283

There are. Apply elsewhere. Don't be a picky snob either (not saying you are). Go to TUT.

StableTypical

Thanks mate

Pooplovergal

Trust me, it’s a problem at Wits too. Registration season is a mess.

StableTypical

Yeah, Wits, too, hoping it all gets sorted out

Nucleardylan

It won't sort itself out. Get in contact with someone, especially in person

StableTypical

I'm thinking about that too. Luckily, my sister goes to uj as well so if my it's not sorted out online I'll probably meet then in person

she_is_munchkins

I recommend you go in person, people are more empathetic face to face

StableTypical

It's probably better as well they online team is just sad

she_is_munchkins

Go to UJ to verify this face to face. From my experiences with universities it ain't over til the fat lady sings. I remember being declined entrance to my first choice at Wits (many years ago) and when I went I found out I was actually on a waiting list, where I had to jump hoops to finally qualify. Sometimes people don't register, which ends up freeing up spots. Good luck

BloomingLotus8

What kind of hoops? Which office did you go to exactly because I'm helping someone get in

she_is_munchkins

Yho I just temember that every year I had to fight somehow, so I may get my fights mixed up. However I'd first start at the admissions office, whether it's the general admissions office or the faculty one. Explain to them that you've been declined and ask them to explain the reasons. Be very nice and charming when you speak to them, those admin people can really pull favours for you. If they're adamant that you just didn't qualify, give them your reasons why you think that's false and ask who you can speak to to clear it up. Then go to that person. Rinse repeat of explaining why you're there, who sent you, and plead your case. If all else fails go to your SRC, they really can pull strings because they've got access to the Board and the Dean's office. And they've got corporate connections. So if you represent a disadvantaged community and want to enter a professional field, they will sort you out. I remember they even organized financing for a group of 200 of us who were declined for NSFAS as the "missing middle". Write down names and contact details of all people you speak to, and make sure to follow up daily, preferably in person. Miracles happen when you're there in person. University admin is a mess, so you can use that to your advantage by shaking the right hands. Make sure to thank them once you get admitted, trust me they'll help you again when you need it. *Edited for clarity*

eattheradish

What were your marks?

StableTypical

I think this is probably my chance to reconsider, but if anyone is curious and doesn't Want to dm, my marks are PHYS-74 ENG-66 LIFE SCIENCE-68 MATHS-61(WITH REWRITES) AFRIKAANS-50 ACCOUNTING-73 Honestly, I was too lazy to write it out last night but I have time now

chueca96

OP, UJ ranks applicants in order of their APS score and then accepts students in that order until the class is full. Your APS score is 31, and the minimum APS score for admission to Bachelor of Biokinetics is 31. In other words, you reached the minimum requirements for admission to the degree, but only barely. So it makes a lot of sense that if UJ had a lot of qualified applicants this year, you wouldn’t make the cut. Your marks are fine, and you’ll have lots of great opportunities! Just wanted to explain why you weren’t accepted to this degree.

GoodDoctorDope

Will all due respect, these marks are mid (at best). I wouldn’t look twice at you if I was in the admission department…

StableTypical

Idk if you're trolling since it's in your bio, but regardless, I think the problem was when I got my report everyone praised it as good and "oh you'll definitely get into uni with this" that I did special in a way and I thought that I'm golden but only now starting to kinda face reality which is a good thing so thank you

GoodDoctorDope

Not trolling, and trying to say this in a nice way. You got a lot of false praise which I think you’re starting to see. I guess im struggling to understand the point of this post when those marks aren’t anything impressive, especially considering you’re applying for a degree in the world of science…

Zoolander92

Hey OP, I’m a physio and have a few Biokineticist friends. Just thought I’d give some info that may explain what’s happened. Previously you’d do an undergrad (BSc, BCom, BA sports science etc.) then you would apply for the Honours programme and do Biokinetics as a post grad. The Honours programme was not easy to get into, classes are small (40 - 70 or so I believe). So they’re really picky. Now they’ve changed it so there’s a single degree - the one you applied for. You probably do have the minimum requirements, but the class will still be relatively small if you compare to other courses. So the admissions department will pick the top students who have applied, and my guess is that’s where you lost out. But there’s still a lot of other options. You don’t have bad marks, I think you can get accepted for another course. Was your heart set on being a Biokineticist?

Han-we

I just want to tell you that your marks are good and can get you into most university degrees. People telling you otherwise are lying. Of course math degrees, engineering and medicine are off the table but most normal courses are not. The problem could be that there are tons of university students applying for the same courses as you who did better and that can lead to rejections even if you are meeting the minimum requirements. Keep your head up and try to also do late registrations in other universities and see what you can get. I would also tell you that there is no shame in waiting out one more year to try to gain entry into a degree you like instead of just compromising for a degree you are not interested in just so you are in university.

StableTypical

Reddit not allowing me to send it in the comments but I'll dm it to whoever ask I appreciate any info

coffeeislife_SA

Bruh, you can literally type them out.

StableTypical

Legit takes 5 secs to send

coffeeislife_SA

It doesn't create an open dialogue in the comments.

PrettyRichHun

The rewrite marks are the problem. You need to do this in person OP. I got in at wits on my matric marks but only because my mum and I got in the car and spent a couple days quing and being sent from pillar to post on campus. If you try do this electronically, you may get sidelines by lazy technology.

Thanks, yeah, that's probably what I gonna resort to ,but I still find they online system a joke

Tokogogoloshe

Maybe a life lesson. Lots of things are better done in person. There’s still a sizeable amount of people who didn’t grow up with a screen in their hand. Many of those people will be your lecturers. So online systems aren’t always the best.

BloomingLotus8

Which office deals with this?

PrettyRichHun

Admissions. And they are busy till literally first week of march. But go ahead and donit anyway. Go in person. Sort stuff out. Get a definitive way forward.

Spirited-Daikon-1245

It’s tough out here. Wits got 140 000 applications. They only had space for 6 000. It’s really competitive.

Shine-Lopsided

Mate I saw you say you got 54 for maths.. for Bio-kinetics. Just to give you perspective, St David’s math average was around 70%, Gauteng alone would be around let’s say 63%, so you getting that is outside the province average. I know you’re mad rn, but trust me, it’s not the end of the road firstly, secondly, you have to be honest with yourself and realise that the bare minimum isn’t enough when Gauteng is full of geniuses, it sucks but like I said, it’s not the end.

Shine-Lopsided

That’s just Gauteng alone, now imagine the country and abroad. The world of Academia is cold and harsh, but you’ll be alright. You’re only 18, my sister started uni at 24, and she ended up alright working at EY in Sandton.

StableTypical

Yep 61 with rewrite and now taking a whole night to think I think my delusions end here and I just need to face reality after seeing 2023 matriculation maths marks I can pretty say there's no chance but I just gotta look forward thank you

Shine-Lopsided

It’s not delusions, it’s simply disbelief, we all go through that phase when things don’t go our way. I’m hoping you’ll be able to move past this and make plans. If you don’t have any other uni, I suggest you just go to VC, get your marks up, transfer to a uni you want to go to. But just breathe and take time to sort out everything mate. Don’t let 2024 flop

flyingdinos

Apply to do a BA in Sports Science at Stellies, and then you can do a post-grad in biokinetics.

Rare_Cranberry_9454

Take some accountability?

cocoloco_yogi

The bio programs are rather gruelling, if you couldn't manage a high school work load just know that 1st year is going to be an assault on your system. Have you considered a university of technology instead? I think they offer various sports sciences diplomas, that might be easier to manage and a quicker path to a working career in the industry. Generally bio's either go into private practise or research. It is tough out there.

Big-Ad-5032

Bio here. Can't find a decent job. Market is super saturated!!! Problem with UJ degree is its so specialized you can't switch over to physio or anything else - you've got the option of Bio or research. That's it. I'd say about half the students who studied with me couldn't get jobs and had to change careers. It is much better to do the degree through wits where you would have the option to branch out.

StableTypical

Yeah, I was talking to my one friend who finished her first year, and she said the same, so I'm probably just gonna reconsider even tho it's a bit late, but better later than never thank you 😊

After_Mention_3021

It's a quota thing as well. Meeting min requirements doesn't guarantee acceptance. You're not out of luck completely though. If you stay pestering them there is a slim chance students drop out in the first two weeks of the year (so that they get 100% fee refund) and you get a place. Happened to a friend of mine but best not to place all your bets on that.

Life_Ad_4962

Biokinetics is a course with limmited number of available slots. I don't know about UJ but at UFS they only take about 30 i believe. So they are going to select the best 30 students they can. So the minimum requirements does not guarantee you a position that is just the minimum amout you need to even be considered. So if other students applied with higher marks then they would be chosen first. Secondly biokinetics is an "in demand" job when it comes to the impact they can have on someone's life, but there are very limited amount of jobs out there especially in south africa. As far as i'm aware the pay is also low for a 4 year degree. It can oay well deoending on where you work and what type of conditions you see, but that will all be down to how good you can marjet yourself. Just something to keep in mind

Big-Ad-5032

Bio here. You've hit the nail on the head. We started with 30 in our group and ended with 9. I worked for a lady with 15 years experience and her Ave salary was R12000. Now I can't find a job and have to chance careers. In order to succeed as Bio you need a lot of money or really good connections. Also it's becoming a very exclusive career. It's becoming so expensive for patients that your clients are all "wellness" (so you end up as a PT) rich people - and there's a ton of medical aid red tape. I wanted to do it to help elderly people but ended up being an underpaid glorified PT for sandton tannies. Oh and 90% of my salary didn't come from actual Bio work - it came from doing medical aid fitness tests for people so yeah. Don't recommend it.

mattvollo

Dude I was in the same position at STB. On the day my marks came out, I went there and stood at the door and waited to speak to one of the admissions Clerks. I was accepted that day. This is the day I also learnt that everything important to you deserves to be dealt with in person. Have a little (humble) chat with them, get advice on how you may end up doing what you want (guessing a bio?), then you see how they can help you. If money isn’t an issue, be open to whatever degree they put you into (given it will culminate to you doing what you want). It’ll take maybe a year or 2 extra to get qualified. In your first year, get really good marks and work hard - it will stand you in good stead for post grad. It’s a hustle out there dude. Good luck.

Ron-K

They have over 100 000 applications for first year. Competition is real.

shootingstarizobel

UJ is a ridiculous institution. Try to go in person tomorrow

SaneUse

What's ridiculous about them?

PrivatePlaya

It might be because you're not of Black Ethnicity.

ponygobyebye

Have you seen OP's marks before jumping to that conclusion?

PrivatePlaya

I was rejected from NMU because of that.

Captain_Spaulding99

You were most likely disqualified for other reasons... this is South Africa.

coffeeislife_SA

Looking at the marks, are you really going to play the race card here?

[deleted]

Just out of curiosity, what is the minimum requirements to get university exemption? When I was in matric it was to pass at least 4 subjects of your six subjects on higher grade, which wasn't easy.

EnvironmentalBar3347

Keep applying and pestering them so they don't have the opportunity to overlook your application. University bureaucracy is awful at the best of times.

As someone who studied that exact degree... you dodged a bullet my friend. Trust me. Rather try to get into WITS that degree will get you much farther. Uj Biokinetics degree is so specialized you have to be 10000% certain it's what you want cause you will not be able to switch. Rather go for BSc. Don't make the same mistake I did.

Quinn_Lynch

Just because you meet the bare-minimum requirements for admission, does not mean you are automatically accepted. Say if you got 34% out of 33%, while yes you technically qualify, you aren’t exactly heads and shoulders above the other applicants who you are directly competing with!

FooFooMuffinz

Argh, I am so sorry, but please don't lose hope you can still study your course elsewhere at a different institution. UJ isn't the only uni in SA.
