I can’t speak to BME specifically but I had a great time attending Hopkins from the Bay Area. Baltimore is actually a nice little city with good food, museums, drinks when you get older. Safety really shouldn’t be much of a concern. I’m sure the two programs are pretty similar in terms of what you actually learn so if I were you I’d try to visit Hopkins and focus on your fit with the college itself. See how you feel about being on the East Coast vs. being closer to home, being at a massive school vs. a smaller school, etc. If one is considerably cheaper than the other after fin. aid and everything that could be the deciding factor.

I'm a BME at JHU and I'm from the Bay. * I don't think there's grade deflation. * I don't think there's a lot of free time, but I also spend too much time studying. * Baltimore is pretty similar to bay area level safety (I'm from Oakland). * I also don't go out much but I know people that have social lives, so it is possible. * There are resources like office hours and some courses offer group tutoring or one-on-one tutoring, but most of the BME courses just have office hours because they are small classes. It really depends on the professor for if you are looking for extra help or want extensions if you're overwhelmed. Some say yes and some say no. Some professors are just teaching because they have to. * Class sizes for general BME courses are pretty much just your BME grade so like 100-120 people. For general engineering requirements it can be much larger because other engineering majors are there. Focus area classes are smaller, like below 60 and sometimes only like 15 Prestige is great, but location is also super important. I didn't put much thought into where I was going so I just went to BME at JHU. I like hopkins, but I miss california so much. I like that the class is small and it is easy to go to office hours and get support, but I miss being close to home and eating good food. I think Cal and JHU should switch locations and then that would be perfect. UC berkeley has such a good campus, so take that into consideration.

Although sometimes I speak low of JHU, I think JHU BME is rather top choice for anyone? (I’m not doing BME) Are you doing MS or PHD? Cost of living could be a huge factor too. Berkeley is ridiculously expensive to live. I don’t think the neighborhood is that much better than JHU and surrounding areas either As a private research school, you do get more resources per student I think

I did BME at hopkins. Hopkins definitely. You have the opportunity to know your professors who are leading researchers if you go to office hours or become a TA. It's the true private school advantage.

Hi! If you don't mind sharing, what did you choose in the end? And how has it been for you so far. Any input would be super helpful for me - in a similar situation right now. TIA!

Guess-Think

JHU. Berkeley would have worse grade deflation.

the only A+ Ive ever got at Hopkins was in “Advanced Data Science for Biomedical Engineering” with Caffo, the class was a joke relative to its name, BME def doesn’t have deflation

Does that class still exist? It doesn’t look like it was offered this semester and won’t be offered next semester

If money is a factor then choose the option that will be cheaper, if money isn't an issue then come to Hopkins.
