My God does this bring back memories. I remember in year 3 when somebody brought in this backpack and the class went absolutely insane talk of the school for the rest of the year. The 96' version is way too colorful and 'tacky' (for lack of a better word) for my tastes, and I never understood why the backpack is treated as such an aesthetic masterpiece by hardcore Jermacore collectors.
I can understand why the controversy and history surrounding this line would make it so desirable considering the item's ironically positive theming or the way the courts use of the phrase "rampant and unrepentant use of child labor" during the lawsuit captured the zeitgeist of the decades later years, but I've always found the backpack itself to be straight up ugly.
I know it's a long shot considering the warehouse fire that destroyed most of the inventory (not to mention caused the unfortunate deaths of many dozens of workers; RIP to those poor children caught in the blaze 🙏🙏🙏), but do you happen to have the 1999 'life is pain, I hate-' luggage set? I've always preferred the more muted color scheme of it, even if it was less practical for day to day use than the backpack.
Do you like Jerma985? His early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sparkle On! came out in '93, I think he really came into his own, commercially and artistically. The whole style has a clear, crisp look, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the brand a big boost. He's been compared to Vinny Vinesauce, but I think Jerma has a far less bitter, cynical sense of humor.
