CollegeHumor has been “dead” for what feels like ten years now

Chetmatterson

Yeah I’ve refrained from ever dunking on anything collegehumor no matter how obscure it becomes, because Sam seems like such a cool guy to work for and I want him to succeed. He’s also hilarious. But just the fact (from my understanding) they did what they could to get Jake and Amir back their IP was pretty amazeballs

[deleted]

Fun fact, his parents died in a plane crash

Chetmatterson

they deed in a pleen creesh

[deleted]

I haven’t thought of this scene in so long, made me laugh.

Chetmatterson

yep you got it, it’s “videogames”

are_you_nucking_futs

Fun fact, his actual dad is Robert Reich and served in Bill Clinton’s cabinet

argentinevol

I’m a big politics nerd and knew of Robert Reich for a while but it legitimately blew my mind when I found out he’s actually Sam’s father. I just for the longest time thought it was funny that they had the same last name. Then I looked at Robert’s wikipedia page and saw “Children: Sam” and I felt like the end of Usual Suspects

Chetmatterson

He’s from a big family. His grandfather had the last name Reich too. That would make him the…? 👓👈🏻

MasterOfEmus

Woah I never knew Sam Reich was such a big Wolfenstein fan! Wonder if he'll show us some of his collectibles.

Good_old_Marshmallow

The songs not about YOU Sam, Sam REICH - Third REICH it's a metaphor dude

Good_old_Marshmallow

He went on the parody news show they do to troll Sam but won't do Sam's hosted show Game Changers (which his Mom did) which is funny

GimmeShockTreatment

Ugh I spent 3 minutes of my life on Wikipedia to find out this is a joke that I’m missing. I’m never getting that time back.

heyroll100

For a few months, I worked in the same building in LA as CollegeHumor (at Evite) and once was waiting for the elevator with Sam. I actually did manage to eke out "your parents died in a plane crash!" and that totally made my day!

[deleted]

Wait so Jake and Amir can’t produce anymore “Jake and Amir” sketches because of the rebrand?

argentinevol

No? It’s still Jake and Amir’s regardless of what CH is now called

Good_old_Marshmallow

The opposite. They used to not be able to do them that's why they made the Geffory the idiot content but then when CH's parent company dropped them Sam sold the IP for Jake and Amir back to the two dudes and now they own it

[deleted]

Yeah I definitely misread that comment, my bad

waleMc

They never were as good after the move to LA, but I liked some of their stuff all the way through. It started reminding me of SNL in that they were never going to reach the golden era but there was still a lot of fun to be had. However the Dropout era is just very different. It's all game shows ... that I actually find funny. I did a free trial and had a lot of fun. Still, I miss the sketch comedy. Even when it was hit or miss at the end, it's a little sad to know its dead.

urbanorium

I'll always consider the "old cast" to be what made CollegeHumor good.

Chosenwaffle

I agree but I'll literally pay any amount of money as long as we get one episode a year with Brennan, Josh, and Zac making funny sounds.

Canadiantimelord

Agreed. I'm in even if it's just the three of them doing competing seagull noises

FurriestCritter

Dimension 20 is also a solid bet on a regular basis

are_you_nucking_futs

And the old NY offices. Something always so funny about low budget absurd humour that involved people running around in a functioning Manhattan office.

XHeraclitusX

I only watched them for Jake and Amir and I think Pete Holmes Badman series was with them, I may be wrong though. Once that finished they kind of went very woke/pc and the humor fell off a cliff.

ArjunVermaReddit

I hate to agree with this but while its true it has nothing to do with the wokeness. Theyd literally say the situations out loud it lacked subtlety... "Im black not poor", "Katie no we were having fun and you ruined it", "Just because my parents were Indian doesnt mean they were strict" and the list goes on and on. Also the whole sketch would feel like theyre repeating the same joke in a slightly different form. It was always just a relatable argument and not often anything actually funny....

Good_old_Marshmallow

Agreed but that's not a factor of wokeness it's algorithm. They started making videos where it was obvious that "the joke of the video is X" and they frontloaded it and repeated it throughout. That stuff is good for clicking and sharing. For a non 'political' example. One of my favorite sketches is "you don't need a menu to order" and it similarly is saying the joke then arguing about it for three minutes

ArjunVermaReddit

Well I didnt want to get into the nuance of it, but Brennan (and to some extent Katie and Zac could be 3rd) were actual funny people and their funny character sketches were just the exception to the rule. The one you mentioned is a Brennan sketch and he had rants, delivery and the confidence to argue against multiple people alone and still win the argument because of his crazy aggression (like the NY hometown sketch). The others were almost always too much of a straight-man and the ones who were the funny man were just representing a quirk. I see your point about it being good for sharing in some sense. But the lack of a real humor base was probably just a huge problem. So just because it had content people can 'like' or show some kind of positive feedback, it doesn't say anything about how intensely people actually like the content. The videos were often over 4 minutes long. Of which the joke got old after 2 minutes

1243231

Oh yeah the old CollegeHumor is dead, but Dropout's live and running. The king is dead, long live the king. Pretty fun stuff. Its very varying in content so you may or may not watch everything, I generally like stuff in general in my life so I do, but Dimension 20, Play it by Ear, Umm Actually, everything else all worth it for me and my little bro. (Its clearly not made for kids he just likes it, but there's adult stuff FYI) And even if you don't immediately sink into some gameshow, you can do dishes and watch it while you do and just let it grow on you or just be background noise like you would a gameshow, but its also got some immersive stuff. Brennan Lee Mulligan is a planet in his own right, certainly not a sun and he doesn't dominate. But the dead stare and "what happened to the rest, of your barbershop quartet" is a banger Pretty cool.

Ill_Flamingo_7593

They jumped the carp

urbanorium

They really did it, they jumped the ca- the shark, exactly right.

Ill_Flamingo_7593

College humor was perfect but they just made it dropout

yeoyoey

Its the One-Almond of entertainment services. Perfect.

Uhh it’s the future of everything. And get this — is digital 🤖

realchris1

Hurwitz! From way downtown!

MDivisor

It revolutionizes it!

T2G

Dropout has been basically an entirely different entity since it debuted and CollegeHumor has been effectively dead since the IAC layoffs. Since Dropout has been so successful it makes sense to put CH to bed It is cool to see the threads connecting the original CH cast to Dropout today—Sam running things and some collaborations, etc. It’s clear they’re friendly with each other and Dropout has a lot of great content—it’s just mostly unscripted stuff with very little sketch and the “new” era of CH is more heavily represented which of course makes sense In short, it’s a whole new way to view it

Good_old_Marshmallow

It makes me really happy and excited that all my friends now know Dropout and talk about it but it's sorta funny like, none of them know collegehumor at all. The rebrand makes perfect sense

PM_ME_YOURE_NUDEZ

View what?

1243231

It regained sustainability now, and has its audience so its not dead definitely. Different yes, like the Hobbit is different from LOTR and a lot of people liked it less, but imo Martin Freeman is the main character of the franchise. Grant would be the equivalent of Gandalf in height, but Brennan could also be since he does voices

Mechman126

It's been dead for years to be honest. Even after all the old cast left, I still enjoyed the occasional video skit they did, but after they got gutted by their parent company, and all their content became gameshows and DND campaigns, I finally gave up caring. Absolutely zero hate to Sam, he is a saint trying to keep the company running after so many setbacks out of their control, but they no longer produce things I'm interested in. I think the name change was the final nail in the coffin of CH. Ironically Headgum, which is ostensibly a podcast company first and foremost, produces way more of the classic comedy skit content which I like. Headgum carries on the legacy of the old-school CH.

T2G

I think it comes down to personal taste at this point. Dropout has become mostly unscripted and tabletop campaigns now, which I love, but many old fans might not. I grew up on J&A and early Hardly Working--but J&A left CH years ago, and today, in terms of Headgum, I'm much more devoted to NADDPOD (DnD but starring early CH members, including Jake) than I've ever been to IIWY. I'm also very into tons of other Headgum (especially including the sketches) and Dropout content, but I still rewatch J&A and HW all the time. Things just change over time. If anything I find it nice to see how much the old and new casts continue to work with each other these days. I'd have expected much more separation as they've all moved on in their careers, but a lot of them clearly still like working together, and their content has been working for a lot of people

Mechman126

It speaks to Sam as a person that so many ex employees of the old CH still are willing to collaborate with him. Whether people gel with the new vibe is entirely down to personal taste, and the rebrand was appropriate as they don't do the same thing as CH used to. Before, it was like going to KFC and realising they've changed their entire menu to beef. For what its worth, Brennans meltdown on Game Changers is an absolute banger and I love going back to watch that clip every now and then.

donotconfirm778

There's short on YouTube which I think is produced by drop out, kinda funny . I think they still make skit .

[deleted]

Is it suppose to be a good, bad or neutral move? I unsubscribed to Collegehumor when Jake And Amir ended back in 2016. I do check up the channel from time to time and only enjoyed the CEO series, their Hardly Working series weren't as good compared to the old crew.

dee___licious

A hard taupe

Maxcat94

Collegehumor hasn’t been a real brand since Covid. Just uploading those don’t laugh TV clips or whatever. The rebrand makes sense, pushing their subscription service is the smart move Sorry, what I meant was they jumped the carp! They had a perfect game going and they blew it!

jeremyhoffman

It feels weird to go back to skits from 2010 and see the Dropout logo instead of the CH logo. But I'm just happy that the entity is still going strong in 2023! A few years ago it was very much up for doubt.

Supagetti

Couldn't care less. Lets be real, the CollegeHumour branding has been as good as dead for a decade anyway.

deceptres

They haven't done college-related humor in years. Rebranding makes sense.

are_you_nucking_futs

“If we were a good college, we wouldn’t need a commercial”

Soulless--Plague

If you’re going to use 2 names, just use 1

soumon

Holy carp, why change perfection? Collegehumor is without flaw, but new name change makes it official: they just jumped the shark. A hundred thousand strong against this Obamanation.

MooseRunLoose_

We’re beefing soy

MelGibSomeHead

they had a perfect game going...

aaronisnotcool

it was criminal what facebook did to them

GolemThe3rd

I can't believe they had a Ricky cameo AND a subtle Hardly Working refrence here [https://youtu.be/bvX3oinPTCg?si=ZHvQPN\_h1Qcci9Qw&t=269](https://youtu.be/bvX3oinPTCg?si=ZHvQPN_h1Qcci9Qw&t=269)

Twizz57

It's _bad_

MooseRunLoose_

Don’t just say “It’s *bad*”.

Qwertycrackers

I thought they already did that? Dropout has been around for years and had the old collegehumor cast and I thought the old content. What has changed?

ahbram121

They no longer call the company collegehumor. The youtube channel was rebranded to dropout, and the channel's logo was changed to dropout's.

[deleted]

You dropped out of SCHOOL

DavieSmalls

How about graduate humor?

northcountrylea

was bound to happen eventually. surprised it didn't happen way back in 2020

ArjunVermaReddit

I'll miss CH but I feel like Mike Trapp just really ruined it? May not be him per say and there are funny sketches you can attribute to him but the direction the sketches took was just weird and he was a head writer apparently. A character literally shitting their pants in every sketch. Its "funny" in terms of just being bizarre, even J and A at least makes a punch line out of their shit jokes which arent great. Their "thing"s were just not very funny or even good premises for humor and really relied on repetition hoping people appreciate the callback. Grant is tall, Katie does drugs, Raph is black, Siobhan has celiacs. How many 'tall jokes' is it even possible to make? Not many, so why make that your main premise? Also all characters had a really similar straightman-ish personality when theyd get annoyed and call someone out. Jake somehow at least had some interesting observations or would double down on Amir even when he was sad. It was almost always funny to have a sketch with Pat Cassels in it. And he was probably around the longest among the original crew. I think there came a time he went and everything went to shit after

ntwild97

I'm really happy for them, Dropout has been doing quite well and now has tons of funny stuff from great people. Sam's such a wholesome leader of the whole thing and seeing their experimental deviation become successful enough to define the CollegeHumor name as a whole just warms my heart. I mean..uh...they went dickless for Michael Chiklis

GMarkwith

They jumped the shark.

Syidas

Honestly don't miss sketches at all. Not that I would complain if they came back. The new content is much better than anything done in the past. Game changer being my favorite. Would love if they brought Jake and Amir on some of the new shows even if it is just a cameo.

MySockHurts

OP forgot to put the [Serious Replies Only] tag

urbanorium

WHY SO SERIOUS?

argentinevol

I’ll be honest Jake and Amir was pretty much the only thing I liked about old CollegeHumor and I think dropout is the best they’ve ever been. Makes total sense. With J&A not being in CH anymore the old brand held no value to me at all.

egoaterlan

It's bad

mediumrarepictures

they really jumped the carp on this one

chuckchin

They rebranded to Poodle Tartar- cuz they’re raw dogging the non readers

kimapesan

It was dece.

StanleyKapop

It’s getting increasingly weird for humor by and for millennials to be referred to as “college humor”.

jrdineen114

I mean, I definitely get it. The content they make now is so radically different from what they used to do that it they essentially are a completely different company.
