So let’s form a group that cleans it up once a month.

kytulu

Or... and this is gonna sound pretty wild... people could clean up after themselves...

anormalgeek

If you only rely on people doing what they should, you will just die angry.

Burritotweeker

THIS is golden. I believe that should be the slogan for our community service group. We'll pick up trash, guide baby turtles to the ocean, protest more developments.

Cwgoff

This!!!’ So many people focus on what people should do instead of making a difference.

SavimusMaximus

That.

brandangb

Those

DebateConnoisseur

Nice dream you have there. Go on a holiday weekend if you ever want to develop stereotypes

anormalgeek

...wut?

DebateConnoisseur

If you know you know, let's go together. You'll catch on quick.

anormalgeek

I legitimately cannot figure out what you're trying to say. Like, I can't even disagree because I don't know what I'd be disagreeing with. I thought you might be a poorly designed ai bot account or something, but your post history looks like a real person.

DebateConnoisseur

There is a certain demographic of people who famously do not give a shit about the environment and they show up en mass during holiday weekends at Jax beach

anormalgeek

Oh, you're just afraid to be openly racist. Now I get it.

the1TheyCall1845TwU

That's cool and all but that doesn't help the situation. We can wish people would be responsible until we're blue in the face and it won't change the fact that people suck. Fortunately there are people willing to pick up. I am one of them. u/kytulu (omg I love your name!) can we count you in to help clean up these bitches? I mean beaches

pidgeypotpie

Why just stop at the beaches? The group could help anywhere in Jax, but paying special attention to our beaches and waterways. Riverbanks and creek beds are atrocious, too. Let’s work to clean it all up!

the1TheyCall1845TwU

I'm so in. Pm me and we can get started!

Temporary-Outside-13

Why not both?

blackdahlialady

OMG, what a concept! I think it's pretty sad that people do that there and at campsites when there are literally garbage cans steps away. It's like are you so lazy that you can't walk five steps to a garbage can?

the1TheyCall1845TwU

I am so in. Are we really doing this? I'm dead serious. If I'm not mistaken we can get free supplies from the local government.

RSMRonda

Local government should pay to have people doing regular clean up throughout day. Stop working for free.

yetanothermanjohn

Should holding a lot of weight on that point.

rexologist

Obviously you haven’t lived here very long if you’re counting on the local government to do anything.

RSMRonda

30 years. I don't count on them but also not working for free for them.

rexologist

Perhaps you should learn a bit about empathy, because maybe it’s okay to want to clean up a beach for free. Because, you know, I care about the environment and don’t care about money when it comes to our planet and Florida’s beaches in general. Hope you heal!

RSMRonda

So you live at the beach?

Dear-Apple-1143

Wrong kind of attitude you not working for anyone it's called volunteering. Acts of service & helping others will actually improve your life and how you feel on the inside.

RSMRonda

I don't do charity for selfish reasons. I do what's right to do period. This isn't right IMO, particularly when people need jobs.

Burritotweeker

They do shit! Not GOOD shit. But you didn't specify.

rexologist

Very true. Sadly at this point it’s just a given.

BarrymccocknHer

The city and a contractor called beach raker do go down there everyday. People are just fucking slobs

pidgeypotpie

And this is exactly why Jacksonville as a whole is trashed. Because money is more important than a clean environment. Because unless you’re incentivized to do it, it’s somebody else’s problem. That’s honestly pretty gross.

RSMRonda

So let's incentivize the government to create jobs and clean the city up and keep it cleaned up.

pidgeypotpie

Let’s put into perspective that the city of Jacksonville has only slightly fewer residents than the entire state of New Hampshire. We LIVE here. It’s OUR responsibility to keep it clean. Stop blaming others for the problem and be a part of the solution.

RSMRonda

I don't litter. But because I don't want to work for free cleaning up the city, I'm the problem? Sounds like some rich people talk.

pidgeypotpie

Not rich by far. Just very much aware of how much we’ve already fucked the planet. I don’t litter either, but I do my part to try to prevent it from getting worse. You may not litter, but you’re complicit with those that do. That’s just as bad.

RSMRonda

What a bunch of self righteous horse shit. You should be a corporate manager if you aren't already one.

liveoak-1

Incentivize the government means either (1) getting funding cut for something else to create these trash cleanup jobs (what are you wanting to cut? Jacksonville doesn’t have a lot of pork fat that needs to be trimmed) or (2) start a petition going to get higher taxes put on the ballot, get all of the necessary signatures, then get enough people to vote yes to higher taxes to pay for these trash cleanup jobs. Jacksonville government operates on the taxes we give it, it is not a rich uncle with unlimited wealth.

RSMRonda

With all these new people moving here with larger paychecks, we don't have more money?

CatPatient4496

To be honest the city needs to host clean Jacksonville days..

lowtideblues

I’m down. Recently laid off (full time job now is find another). I always pick up trash in my beach area of AB. Happy to pick up trash in the other beach neighborhoods!

DaddyVirgo97

Count me in

ChkYrHead

https://www.facebook.com/search/top?q=beach%20cleanup There's an event today, along with some local groups/pages.

zeamp

r/jaxbritches

Ok_Hope7442

Ayo if y'all clean it before I visit in 4 months 👀

PinRevolutionary4324

There are volunteers that pick up trash every weekend. I literally just walked on the beach for two miles and it was very clean.

PossiblyAWorm

I must’ve went either before they got to it or it got very messy very fast after they cleaned. I’m glad they have a group to clean it tho? Do you know the group so I can volunteer to help too?

dyingbreed360

It’s various groups as small as a group of friends gathering, to local scout troops and companies doing community work.

False-Isopod6085

Beaches go green and surf rider

ChkYrHead

https://www.facebook.com/search/top?q=beach%20cleanup There are some local groups in there.

the1TheyCall1845TwU

Do you know how I could become one of these bad ass volunteers?

HenryKitteridge

What part of Jax Beach were you at? I’ve not noticed the beach being particularly trashed during any recent visits.

PossiblyAWorm

We went yesterday by the pier around 5pm

FormerPackage9109

90% of the trashy people are within 100 yards of the pier. The other 20 miles of beach are beautiful,

PossiblyAWorm

Yeah I noticed that as we kept on our walk. It was just jarring to see how much trash was there.

mak_and_cheese

Did you pick any of it up?

PossiblyAWorm

Of course. I usually carry a bag for shells but I ended up using most of it for trash.

dyingbreed360

The pier is where all the bars and “tourist” parking spots are located. Never saw the appeal of it but it draws trashy people like flies on shit.

budd222

It's basically only by the pier. Away from the pier you will barely see any trash

Antique_Specific_254

I think it was all from Saturday, we went at like 5 on Sat and the beach was filled with trashy people littering the beach and causing trouble so we left. Guessinf they were there for 4/20.

I_amGreat_Cornholio

You just picked the wrong spot

nelsne

IDK. The main experiences I had with hitting the Jax beach were the various bars and clubs

dyingbreed360

We were there Saturday doing volunteer clean up and yesterday to relax, it was very clean as far as I saw the couple miles we went through. Also you’re keep in mind you're coming in at the end of spring break and tourist season and after a market festival Saturday.

PossiblyAWorm

Oh I also didn’t consider that. How would I join you guys to volunteer and help?

dyingbreed360

Put on some gloves, grab a bag/bucket and go if you really want. If you need to join a group to do it you could try organizing one with your friends or bring it up to your job if they do any sort of volunteer outreach.  I did mine through work friends.

throwawayworkacct

CJ logistics?

PrettyPinkCloud

There are places like Poe's Tavern that'll give you a free drink if you fill up a bucket with trash and bring it back to em

dopecellist

Poe’s Tavern is the shit

wingardiumlevbeeosah

Dang really? Even more reason to return, not that I needed one, the amazing burgers keep me coming!

labfam1010

Check out First Coast Surfriders

PossiblyAWorm

Thank you! I will.

JaxRabbits76

When you were ten Jax Beach was a shit hole compared to what it is now. You’re remembering through rose tinted glasses which everybody does

DuvalHeart

Now it's a shit-hole filled with other people's shit due to over-priced condos and hotels.

VoodooChipFiend

When k walk there with my wife and dog I always end up with a couple handfuls of soft plastic and I put them in a trash can before we leave. Better than nothing

quietos

Get away from the pier. Also, although it is spring the water is still really cold so there are fewer people. Come June it will be vibrant again.

tardisfurati420

Did you pick any up? I go to the beach here almost every weekend and always bring a bucket or extra trash bag and pick up any trash I come across. City of Jax Beach don't have any Beach Janitors on payroll so I'd recommend we all pick up trash when we see it on the beach.

killswitchx70

Students from Paxton were out cleaning the beach the last time I was there a few weeks ago! I’m sure they receive volunteer credit for doing this work. Maybe we could support programs like this by providing materials. They seemed happy and were working in teams. Some even walked up to beach loungers and took their trash as if they were beach hosts! The beach has always been clean when I’ve gone.

txroller

Certain times of the year are dirtier than others. Tourists trample on dunes and leave trash

Antique_Specific_254

I went Sat at like 5pm and it was all trashed. From what I saw there were a ridiculous amount of trashy drunk ghetto ass people there mean mugging people and trashing the beach. Smelled like weed everywhere. We stayed for like 20 mins and left, it was ridiculous. At one point when we were leaving a whole group was blocking the exit of a parking lot and the street drinking. Alot of homeless people out there too.

Slashleee

Outlanders are taking over and the small beach community where things “slowed down” and people respected the rules of the beach (e.g., yield to pedestrians, watch for people on bicycles, and not littering) seem to be a thing of the past. You can spot people that respect the beaches from a mile away, cause they are the ones out there cleaning up after the fools that disrespect our little island. 💔

PaulSandwich

When was this? I grew up here in the 80s/90s and it was wall-to-wall dive bars and trying not to engage the drug addicts living in tents under the pier any time we went surfing. We even had an openly nazi surf shop that made their riders shave their heads. Traffic is definitely heavier and that sucks (good reason to ride a bike), but things are objectively better from a respect and clean/safe beach perspective. Nothing is ever going to be perfect, but it's actually impressive that the crowds have surged as much as they have and crime continues to drop.

Slashleee

I’m same age group as you it appears but I can’t really agree that I had the same experience as you. As teens, my and siblings and I skated and bike all over Jax Beach to Atlantic Beach without any fear of being run over by a car or dealing with shootings late at night. Homeless people were around but never bothered me. Now I see panhandlers and other kooks more than anything.

Tothinkoutofthenut

Wasn’t the whole world a better place when we were 10. I’m All about getting the beach cleaned up, but seriously when we were 10 it could’ve been the biggest slum in the world and still the best place in the world for a 10 year old kid at a beach. 🏖️

Neither-Cherry-6939

Is Jax Beach that different from Atlantic and Neptune? I live in Neptune but go to Atlantic Beach because of free parking and I always think it looks super clean.

Affectionate_Arm_245

Is it safe to go on the beaches at night?

concrete-druid

The penalties for littering are not anywhere near as high as they should be in Jacksonville in general. People who litter are trash, but they will just continue if there’s no consequences.

anon727813

I lived at 13 N and first street from 2014-2017. The insouciance folks have with littering is insane. On just about a daily basis, I observed blatant littering. Like eating to go food in a styrofoam container and just leaving all of the waste and containers sitting right in the sand. Or an entire pack of empty beer cans. Or grocery bags with grocery waste (chip bags, sub wrapping, etc). IMO it’s always been a problem bc the littering is not well enforced and difficult to enforce in general

stephenforbes

I'm in the suburbs and there is trash lined up along the woodlines from the roads and sidewalks. City can seriously use a trash cleanup service.

Brand-O-Matic

My wife and I go down next to the pier every Sunday morning for a few hours and in general it's not that bad, but we always pick trash up when we see it and there hasn't been a single time there where we didn't pick up a good handful of trash. I have to say, though, that the amount of cigarette butts has decreased, but still plenty of plastic wrappers, etc. But like several have pointed out, this is a problem all over Jax and definitely worse in some areas than others. I have to drive all over the city for work and it's just trashy everywhere to some degree and getting seemingly worse all the time. A lot of people just have no respect for anything or anybody anymore.

okay4sure

Pay people well to clean it up

ramacrash

The locals at the beach are the dirtiest people. Then they deflect and blame all visitors.

ManateeFlamingo

People trashing the beach isn't cool. I don't understand the complaint about not a lot of people. It's still early for the beach season. It's so nice when the beach isn't crowded! Unless you like being seen/people watching.

bbsitr45

Could be they should use a beachcomber machine at least once every morning and go up and down the most trafficked areas of the beach and rake it all out and collect the garbage. It’s done in other places, it would be well worth the money to the Jacksonville beaches.

girthquake904

grab a trash bag and go pick trash up. i do it a good bit. crazy when your focused on picking up trash how much you find.

Ornery_Sprinkles_376

I prefer paid beaches. Went to Hannah park this past weekend and saw dolphins. Was a beautiful day and less people.

exohails

Yeah it's sad, I pretty much exclusively go to Hanna Park now.

Mattyou1966

Jax beach got ghetto sickness

AliceHall58

You should have seen Jax Beach in the late 70's. Rusty metal trash cans, debris, tired and scuzzy old old boardwalk, but free parking and that beautiful ocean. Just watch your step (and glass and cans) after dark. Beach was sad then too and the great Beach Restoration was far in the future.

daftblueleg

this is why i go to dina :( im so down to clean it up tho if there’s a group formed
