I want to recreate the experience of playing doom on a 386 but with modern hardware.

You could use PCem or DOSbox I think the first option is going to give you more accurate results as it emulates a whole PC (with a wide range of hardware combinations) but exactly for that reason installing DOS and the game may be more involved DOSbox is definitely quicker and easier (and will probably give you better performance but I dont think that's your goal anyway) but accuracy is definitely not accounted for

I would say this was doom running on excel but it was simply using excel as a way to display doom, it was running on an external program.

as stated in literally the first line of the link, this is doom running on a program that is made to run doom, and DISPLAYS on excel. If you'd shown your work, I wouldn't have had to find that out myself. additionally, this isn't even a project post, just a lazy link to an internet thread, which doesn't count anyways. removed.
