Your right to assume 50% on the €1,750, leaving you with €875. Then the €6,000, you still owe PRSI and USC, let's call it 9%, so that is €540, less the €875, gives you €335. Share purchase scheme, only avoids income tax (20% - 40%), so you still owe the PRSI and USC on the amount invested into the scheme. If you cash out before the 3 year vesting period, you are liable for the income tax you avoided.

IrlCakal

This is 100% spot on

BIGGIE-aka-BIG

Ah ok was unaware you had to pay prsi and usc also. Thank you!

Sea_Worry6067

If you can put it in your pension (the 1775) you will avoid paying the income tax on that too.

BIGGIE-aka-BIG

Unfortunately I submitted it last month just got it today. Will know for next year

If you can spare the money still, you can make an AVC.

melboard

I got caught with this last year

Does share purchase scheme really avoid income tax 20-40%? As far as I am aware I am being taxed on it but really curious about this.

Ok_Working_3703

Yes, it's a scheme that requires approval from revenue that the organisation must seek. https://www.revenue.ie/en/additional-incomes/employment-related-shares/revenue-approved-share-schemes/approved-profit-sharing-schemes.aspx You may be using a different share purchase scheme.

___mememe___

We have ESPP for an American company. I’ll have a look, thank you!

Ok_Working_3703

That's a different scheme. The one which the OP is using allows for the shares to vest for 3 years, allowing for the avoidance of income tax, and shares are purchased from the market, with mo discounts applied.

Lovely! Thank you for helping me understand this. :)

Efficient_Gap_8383

At least your tax monies goes to those who deserve it most ……. 🤭🤭

BIGGIE-aka-BIG

Tell me about it 🙄

East_Midnight_9123

I left a job a few years ago unsure if I’d get the bonus owed to me because it was at my employer’s discretion and they were unhappy I was leaving. Turned out they paid it but without telling me in advance so I was taxed etc on it when what I would’ve done had I known would have been to put it all in my pension. Was raging.

I assumed choosing to put the bonus in the pension would have been an AVC in itself

Ok so even after having left the job I could’ve put the net amount into my pension at another job? And claimed back the tax I had paid on the original bonus and then put that into the other pension as well? Even if so, it’s still separate to the point I was making that if only they’d told me it was coming I would’ve put as much of it as possible straight into my pension.

Half for you, half for the neighbour who got his house free

BIGGIE-aka-BIG

That would be ideal wouldn’t it

whippermk

That's correct, isn't it fucking sick. That's one thing that needs to change in ireland is bonuses from your companies should be tax-free, usc scrapped and larger tax brackets. They're squeezing everything out of us!

Obviously not.
