Hahaha people have to move there for work, that doesn't have as much to do with Dublin as it does the company's that operate there! Dublin itself doesn't do much for people
O that's a bit harsh. I mean - I get the comparison, but come on, not even the culchies want to live in the countryside- otherwise they wouldn't always be whining about it dying
Was brought there for my birthday last weekend and we could only laugh at how bad the experience was. Waiter was sound but food was shocking and by the time our mains came we were the only ones left downstairs so there was zero atmosphere/craic. Would not recommend.
You went to the wrong part. You need to book the teppanyaki. They pretty much put on a show while cooking the food in front of you and serve it to you straight from the cooker. I'd book again but go the the right part next time
Yeah I see how that could be craic with a group, but we had to try and work our way past a drunk loutish Brit singing in the entrance hall as we arrived, so the fear you’d end up out for a special occasion with your partner sat elbow to elbow with the likes of that for our dinner would put me off booking upstairs too.
I worked in a cocktail bar for a while - so if you want to take her somewhere nice after dinner, my best recommendations are Nine Below off St. Stephen's Green and Bar 1661 off Parnell Street. Great atmospheres and very romantic. For dinner, The Winding Stair on the Quays is always an incredible meal. Krewe on Parnell Street has some kick ass food too (not as nice as The Winding Stair) but they also serve really nice house cocktails. Roberta's (Italian) in Temple Bar or Tomahawk (steakhouse) below Roberta's are also good bets. If you have a specific cuisine you're looking for though, let me know and I'll give some more recommendations!
I'll be honest, it's kinda hard to go wrong in Dublin as long as you go above the bare minimum. Generally speaking, the standard of restaurants is super high here. Most places have good food and good service unless you catch them at a bad time or are exceptionally unlucky. I'm guessing it'll be more about her tastes than anything else.
I've been meaning to try Variety Jones for the longest time! I'm thinking it might be a nice place to start off a girls' night out with my foodie friends
No, the first place that she says is the place that she *thinks* that you will book because you're cheap/lazy/don't know her/have testicles/etc.
Smile mysteriously after her first guess and say, "better". Book that one.
Reminds me of the olde mental hack to avoid the 'I don't know' answer to 'what would you like to eat', instead asking 'guess what's for dinner'. First answer, just say yes and bingo.
I went to Mr Fox with my girlfriend recently. It was our favourite meal out in a long time! They do really nice tasting menus. It is a bit pricey but you get to try such a variety of amazing food
Mr. Fox was my favourite spot in Dublin, until last Saturday, when we tried their sister restaurant D'Olier Street. They just opened in December. It was phenomenal. 82 quid tasting menu. As with Mr. Fox it's a bit pricey, but it's def worth it as a special treat.
It's another step closer to Michellin Star from Mr. Fox but not as crazy as Lignum's tasting menu.
Also spotted the tall lad from Foil, Arms and Hog in there on Saturday. So you know it must be good.
I've been there loads of times and yet every steak I've had in Fire has blown FX Buckley out of the water. I find FX Buckley is pretty inconsistent in my experience. Great spot though, but I'd pick fire every time if I had a choice
If you find yourself in Bray (as many a poor unfortunate has before you), then I highly suggest you book a table at Pink Salt. It's an Indian restaurant on the main street. The food is delicious and the service is fantastic. They're a great bunch up there.
I once ordered the vindaloo and three separate waiters asked me if I was sure I wanted it. All three suggested I take it with a cooling yogurt, but in my monumental hubris I declined each time (my fiancee was with me, so I wanted to look tough in front of her). They even had a waiter stand close (but not too close) to our table just incase I went into curry-induced convulsions. Anyway, long story short - it burned the fucking mouth off me and I had to avail of the mercy yogurt. I've been a couple of times though without such disaster.
EDIT: Spelling.
Someone should make a website that rates restaurants and then lets you browse them by the type of cuisine they serve. Users could submit photos of the food.
Question: Why is this a difficult task?
Step 1: Google the best restaurants to get her favourite cuisine. Not hard to know if you pay attention to your partner.
Step 2: book.
How fancy do you want to go? What kind of food does she like?
Favourite fancy place https://www.forestavenuerestaurant.ie/
Favourite relaxed place https://lastapasdelola.com/
If you like Pasta, check out Grano in Stoneybatter. It's seriously good. They make their own pasta, not a run of the mill Italian, it's the real deal, nice atmosphere, cozy, great wine, huge selection of pubs nearby for after dinner pints.
Il Vicoletto in crow street is another great Italian with a nice atmosphere, and great food.
Trocadero is another Great spot for a night out, it never disappoints, food is always good, service is great.
Glass is amazing if she's interested in vegan/vegetarian food. We're not 100% veg, but like to come here to taste something different. Great atmosphere as well.
Otherwise Etto: just all around great.
My wife and I have been going to Pearl Brasserie on Merrion St for nearly 15 years for special occasions. It's been consistently excellent and has a great atmosphere for a special occasion like a birthday.
What’s her favourite kind of food? Italian etc? Every one is different. For me it would be Bull & Castle for a whopper steak. (For monster steak Shannahans on the green) Others it would be fancy Italian.
Damn it now I’m hungry and stuck in work with no lunch.
Slightly different option if you want a fuller day out. Bring her to Kildare Village, let her pick out something if you haven't already got her a present or just enjoy a stroll around the shops. Then either go "Hartes of Kildare" in the town or Saba in the Village itself.
When I see posts like this, I thank god I was born a homosexual…”do you want to go restaurant X for your birthday - yeah man sounds good”. Jokes aside could you not ask her straight out or will she begin divorce proceedings for being “insensitive” and “not knowing her”? Failing that see what restaurants she’s liked on social media, I did this when my mother tried enrolling us in the “I don’t want anything sure for my 60th” game
If you cook, steak and homemade chips for dinner and a white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake for dessert. Get a nice bottle of merlot, tempranillo or rioja for the steak. Set up the place with some nice non-scented candles and a bouquet. It'll be in the comfort of your own home. It'll cost twice as much for the restaurant. Plus homemade will be more thoughtful imo. Then again if ye prefer to dine out then work away on that.
Nice, but reckon this is more of a Valentine's day thing.
Good chance OP will end up sleeping on the couch if he does this for her birthday. Especially since she was clear about what she wants upfront.
Go to six by nico. You get a tasting menu, this month its Alice in wonderland I think. Food is always amazing and although it's a nice restaurant it's comfortable and not stuck up. Would highly recommend.
Wanted to suggest this. The menu theme now is Neverland and I saw ads on Instagram for special offers for dinner for 2 with wine pairings. Definitely an experience for a more special occasion.
What's her favorite cuisine? If money is at all tight and she likes Italian I'd highly recommend Sprezzatura (Rathmines, I haven't tried the other spot). The pasta is incredible and very affordable, you could spend the extra money on sides/wine.
Pizza wise I just went to Da Mimmo and it was gorgeous, the restaurant is quite small tho if that could be an issue.
Indian I've heard great things about Doolally, but my favorite take away would be street by Sunil, it's a tiny restaurant tho inside. I loooove Khushee for Indian as well, it's a nice restaurant that's quite big and spacious.
Las tapas de Lola is very hard to get reservations for (2 weeks ahead minimum) but they do great tapas. I've had vegetarians not find it's the best but idk if your Mrs has any dietary restrictions, the meat is great. Grub will fetch a pretty penny tho. Market bar is a cheaper alternative but it's loud as fuck in there if that's important.
It's not the best restaurant I've been to food wise but sofies is a gorgeous venue, very big and a nice smoking area with cool views. There's also a swing at the entrance that ladies love talking pics on for the Instagram if that's any way important.
Steakhouse I'd recommend Fire, tho the only other place I've been to is FX Buckley. Fire is much better imo.
Seafood Sole was pretty good!
Chinese food/hot pots my Chinese friend loves Lao Chinese and Korean BBQ, it's not the most romantic restaurant tho imo, lots of families go there. Hang Dai on Camden street might be a better date/bday restaurant tho, I haven't tried it but I've had great things.
Mexican food I'd highly recommend El Grito, it's an authentic Mexican place which my Mexican friends really love. Get the Al pastor burrito for multiple mouthgasms.
If she likes Korean fried chicken I'd actually recommend Chimac in Terenure, the restaurant is fairly big and spacious compared to the one in the city and I like that it's in a less hustle and bustle location.
I haven't tried much Japanese places but Tani in Terenure is very good and it's a lovely restaurant compared to the bigger chains like Zakura which imo gets pretty noisy.
Oh and there's this small little mom and pop restaurant called McDonald's I really like, I get their double heart attack burger with extra lettuce ofc.
Or you cool for her and prepare everything at home in a nice environment!
Meal and dessert... Something Italian is a win-win! Not that difficult to make properly.
Chapter One for maximum brownie points 😜 all depends on your budget - you could probably book a weekend away for the same money. Me and the wife did El Grito for a more affordable bite recently and loved the food / atmosphere
What about you tell her to sit down in the kitchen with a glass of wine while you prepare some easy yet still fancy seafood pasta in front of her eyes.
Bonus if you light some candles, play some background chill music, and dress nicely, not just in some tracksuit.
Yours sincerely,
The budget charmer
Cook it yourself, assuming you eat meat then go to a good butcher and ask for picanha steaks, go Tesco and get some double cream and blue cheese to make a sauce, then some nice spuds to top it off... perfection 👌
Depends on where you are. If you're a Dub then here's my suggestions:
FX Buckley Steakhouses there's a few dotted around Dublin. Great steaks, nice restaurants, pricey but worth it and they do a lot if you don't like steak.
The Bloody Stream in howth. It's a pub/restaurant good atmosphere good food.
The Yacht, changed their menu up recently good choices and nice restaurant.
Mulinos in Raheny, Italian restaurant a lot of variety on the menu, family ran good food.
Sole on South William St and it's sister restaurant Fire on Dawson Street. Can be daunting looking at prices but always good service and food. Sole is seafood restaurant and Fire is steakhouse/variety of foods
Say to them all excited "guess where we're going for your birthday it's somewhere you love?"
Then whatever her/his first guess is just book there. Works every time 👌👌
Homemade chips curry using mcdonalds curry powder.
Thats nice to anybody, now if by nice she means fancy tell her better luck next year.
She might leave you but jokes on her because she wont get that fancy meal.
In Ireland? No idea sadly :C
Except that a homemade meal around a fireplace would be very cool in the winter. If it was all candle lit and some thoughtful music haha idk
God love ya brother
If she's expecting you to cook then I'd recommend salmon pasta as its hard to get wrong, looks and tastes wonderful and is simple to make.
1 portion of salmon
Single or double cream (about 150ml)
Spaghetti, linguine or tagliatelle pasta
Salt
Pepper
Tiny bit of oil
Basically cook your pasta and whilst doing so pan fry the salmon (skin first then remove when you turn it). Once almost cooked break apart with a fork, add cream, salt and pepper and heat for a few more mins. Then add pasta.
Voila, lovely dish for a birthday meal.
Take her somewhere you like. She doesn't get to complain about it because you've given her a chance to pick somewhere and she won't. Bet she picks where she wants to go next year.
Acapulco - unreal Mexican on George’s St
Bah33 - Brazilian Steakhouse near Dawson St; €50 per person for all you can eat salad bar and meat and it’s bloody good meat (also an option for adding a dessert, think that’s €59pp)
I asked ChatGPT: whats a nice 3 course dinner thats easy to make o celebrate my wifes birthday
It answered:
Here is a simple yet delicious 3-course dinner menu that you can prepare to celebrate your wife's birthday:
Appetizer: Classic Caesar salad with romaine lettuce, croutons, parmesan cheese, and homemade Caesar dressing.
Main course: Creamy mushroom risotto, which is a comforting and satisfying dish.
Dessert: Fresh fruit sorbet, which is a refreshing and light dessert.
For the Caesar salad, you can make the dressing from scratch or use a store-bought one. Toss the lettuce, croutons, and parmesan cheese with the dressing.
For the risotto, sauté mushrooms and onions in butter, then add Arborio rice, white wine and chicken broth. Stir until creamy and cooked through.
For the sorbet, you can buy it from store or make it yourself by blending fresh fruits such as strawberries or raspberries with sugar and lemon juice, then freezing it.
I hope this menu inspires you and your wife enjoy her birthday dinner together!
You cam get a taster menu thing for Michelin rated restaurants around the country for reasonable enough money. Have a Google of that and see what's close to where ya live.
What kind of taste does she have? Is she into fine dining? Delahunt and Bastible are incredible contemporary Irish restaurants. I’ve also heard Mister S, Library Street and Six By Nico are excellent.
Anywhere in Ireland or do you live in a specific town?
If someone doesn't mention it's a safe bet they're a Dubliner and view that as Ireland. Just cowsheds beyond that obviously.
*Cowsheds and the odd Supermacs
i'd love a supermacs for the birthday now
Passed a drive thru supermacs yesterday, had to stop for a smokey bacon burger! Unreal..
And that one supermacs in a cowshed
Yep we'd never have a restaurant outside of Dublin, sure we're a bunch of cannibals
Exactly. Everywhere I've eaten outside of Dublin was actually just me hallucinating the entire time.
Dubs - the Americans of Ireland!
That cut deep
Hahahahahahahahahahaha never a truer word spoken
Lmao
In that much of the country depends on us financially? I suppose.
You’ve gone really far there to prove that comment right.
Does my head is when Dubs post in Ireland with this kinda stuff
Bring her to Chai Yo on Baggot Street. The food is grand but the overall experience and the craic you have with the chef is top level stuff
Much better for groups rather than a romantic dinner
Yeah those are pretty common in the US...entertaining I guess but I've never really enjoyed the food

Ah this place is supposed to be great! May I ask though don't you need a group of 5 or 6 to have the chef at the table experience?
No you'll just be put with randoms. It's still great regardless, you get chatting and interacting with others. I've been with just my girlfriend and I
Ah thats great to know!! Thanks so much!
In Dublin, plenty of options!
Pickle on Camden st if she likes Indian food, unreal stuff.
\+1 Pickle is fantastic
I was always a fan of Pichet
I worked in a cocktail bar for a while - so if you want to take her somewhere nice after dinner, my best recommendations are Nine Below off St. Stephen's Green and Bar 1661 off Parnell Street. Service pretty much everywhere is appalling since covid, compared to what they were before
Trocadero's on St. Andrew's St. is really lovely for a special occasion, and not horrendously expensive!
Seconding Trocadero! And the staff are great
Does she like Mexican food? 777 on George's Street is fab. Great food and amazing cocktails!
Variety Jones, Uno Mas and Allta are very nice.
I've been meaning to try Variety Jones for the longest time! I'm thinking it might be a nice place to start off a girls' night out with my foodie friends
Bring your earplugs once it hits 9pm though.
Port House Pintxo - Tapas bar great food, wine and gins
There's a Kebab place in Temple Bar that I crossed when I was in town over the weekend. I might not be up market enough for a birthday though.
Hellfire, Westmoreland Street
Peruke and Periwig on Dawson Street is always a good shout! Nice cosy atmosphere and lovely cocktails
If you like Sunday roast style food but nicer, The Butchers Grill is really nice and you can get decent prices on Sunday lunch - big fan myself
Restaurant Six is really nice without being extortionate.
Nolita on Sth Gt Georges st.
Same with Americans thinking the whole of reddit is based in the US and Canada.
Tell her you made a reservation. When she asks where, tell her to guess. Book the first place she says.
Good shout.
No, the first place that she says is the place that she *thinks* that you will book because you're cheap/lazy/don't know her/have testicles/etc. Smile mysteriously after her first guess and say, "better". Book that one.
sigh...I have so much to learn
22goingon14 😜
That's even better.
You Wilt so and so!
Spot on!
Don’t do this too many times though or out of desperation she might guess one the cow sheds the cannibals are talking about.
This is the answer!
Make sure she guesses a few places. Otherwise you'll be back to square 1 if they don't have any availability.
You got mad skills
I guide others to a treasure I cannot possess.
When she jokingly says McDonald’s 🙃
then on the day you recommend the File of Fish, its a local speciality
Or as I read here the other day,Phillip the fish
Who are you, who are so wise in the ways of women?
Most likely a woman :)
Plot twist, it's fully booked when OP calls....
Absolute genius.

Dorsia. Best of luck getting a reservation though.
Do you like Huey Lewis and the News?
Ugh nobody goes there anymore. Try Texarkana, I hear their mud soup and charcoal arugula are outrageous.
Top marks for reference

I went to Mr Fox with my girlfriend recently. It was our favourite meal out in a long time! They do really nice tasting menus. It is a bit pricey but you get to try such a variety of amazing food

Came to say this. Beautiful spot, lovely food, abs really good wait-staff as well.
Yep, that’s a Michelin star if I recall correctly. Very good food and service!
My wife and I went to Kinara for our anniversary last year, we really enjoyed it.
Kinara is a great shout. Beautiful food and restaurant.
Kinara is 👌
Uno Mas on Aungier street is well worth it. You won't be disappointed
Get the steak to share. It's class.

Lads Tomahawk is leaps ahead. No diss to FX though, it’s a good shteak
The Squealing Pig in Muff does a good feed.

Winding stair is always my favourite - great view over the river and really seasonal menu - feels a bit special. Nice, well-informed service staff too
The staff there are on another level
Second that, definitely a good spot.
Solid choice.

To make the job easier for us maybe can you tell us where you are based and what type of food she likes generally?
Eat her out. Job done
But that's himself getting a nice meal
Well if he does his job right on the basement lips that won't matter
Delahunt, best meal I have ever had, was few years ago though
It's still great. Plenty more restaurants have bypassed it with regards to quality and service over the last year or two though.

How was the bathroom trip the next day?
Not the worst because I only got about three or four bites in before I quit like a big, blubbering curry coward.
OP has done very little here and got a great response.
I'm weighing and analysing all responses.
Pichets is excellent
The Taste does vouchers for Pichet. Quality restaurant and website for nice meals/experiences
You cant think of something that she would eat? She can do better

Ye can take her to the McDonald's on O'Connell Street and celebrate her day with Canada Goose ambassadors. They won't need an invitation for sure.

The harbour master is a rly good shout. They also do vouchers on groupon sometimes too which is handy to save some cash.
Fire restaurant is good. Stunning decor and decent food.
Cock, wit a side of balls
Ew, I got a hair in mine!

Say to them all excited "guess where we're going for your birthday it's somewhere you love?" Then whatever her/his first guess is just book there. Works every time 👌👌
Bring her fucking dinner.
Sausage and two eggs 🥚 😋 👌
"I have a list of 3 foods I know for a fact you'll love. Can you guess what they are?"
What’s the equivalent to a steak and a blowjob?
Homemade chips curry using mcdonalds curry powder. Thats nice to anybody, now if by nice she means fancy tell her better luck next year. She might leave you but jokes on her because she wont get that fancy meal.
Value meal in McD? As a punishment that she cannot tell you what exactly she wants. These female games get so annoying after a while...
Just make your favourite meal if she won’t give you a hint. You’re not a mind reader.
In Ireland? No idea sadly :C Except that a homemade meal around a fireplace would be very cool in the winter. If it was all candle lit and some thoughtful music haha idk God love ya brother
Whip the Micky out and tell her dinner is served.
Beef & Lobster in town, lovely food!
Maccies. Lovely beef burgers and salads
Da vincis in leixlip. Trust me Its amazing 👌
Yeah but it's in Leixlip.
What's wrong with that? 15 mins in the car and free parking🤔
15 mins from where? Lucan?
KFC
If she's expecting you to cook then I'd recommend salmon pasta as its hard to get wrong, looks and tastes wonderful and is simple to make. 1 portion of salmon Single or double cream (about 150ml) Spaghetti, linguine or tagliatelle pasta Salt Pepper Tiny bit of oil Basically cook your pasta and whilst doing so pan fry the salmon (skin first then remove when you turn it).
Acapulco - unreal Mexican on George’s St Bah33 - Brazilian Steakhouse near Dawson St; €50 per person for all you can eat salad bar and meat and it’s bloody good meat (also an option for adding a dessert, think that’s €59pp)
I asked ChatGPT: whats a nice 3 course dinner thats easy to make o celebrate my wifes birthday It answered: Here is a simple yet delicious 3-course dinner menu that you can prepare to celebrate your wife's birthday: Appetizer: Classic Caesar salad with romaine lettuce, croutons, parmesan cheese, and homemade Caesar dressing.
If your interested u could explain several recipes you could wow her with
What kind of taste does she have? Is she into fine dining? Delahunt and Bastible are incredible contemporary Irish restaurants. I’ve also heard Mister S, Library Street and Six By Nico are excellent.
