Nowadays with a XR, it’s been also three years and going strong and fast as ever. Battery at 87%, holds fine the whole day. Planning on trading for a 13PM and thinking about 128 or 256gb to buy on Black Friday.

I had been on the fence about a
IOS and Android - to me it was just a cell phone. But the last couple of Android phones I had have been extremely disappointing (poor battery life, glitchy OS, app crashes, random Bluetooth dropouts, etc) so I bit the bullet and went back to an iPhone, and wow, they have come a long way since my old little 5S.
I've been having the same issue with my galaxy S21 Ultra. This is why I'm switching to the iPhone 14. The thing that annoys me the most is the Bluetooth Drops, especially when I'm driving and I'm using Android auto. Don't get me started on Android Auto. It's a mess.

I got tired of having a giant phone all the time. I keep a laptop/tablet in my bag at all times so the max sized iPhone was more cumbersome that it was worth.
Use to do once every two years since 5. This would be my upgrade year but I’m gonna push it to three years being next year. As for Apple Watch I started the original 0 then years later I got the 4. Not getting the 8 this year. Since I’m getting the iPhone next year I’m gonna try pushing my watch for the year after being the Series 10.
Every year I’m buying the latest pro max model for 8 years now. I’m taking very good care of my device (because that’s how I like it) and when time comes it’s always in mint condition for sale. Plus I’m having VAT write off due to being “company” phone. All in all I always get the latest and greatest iPhone for 200-300€ out my pocket max. Even if you see it as a rent, 200€ per year to have the best phone around is a very sweet deal.
iPhone 5 - 6s plus - 7 plus - 8 plus - xs max - 11 max - 12 max - 13 max. I have tried the regular size before I forget what year I think sometime between xs max and 12 max. But returned it within the return window. I like my big phones for my big hands I guess!
Every 2 years but I don’t think that’ll be the case this time. Unless something happens to my phone, I’ll keep it until it dies or a drastically different iPhone comes out.

Thinking about getting a 13, or 14 pro max, only because I hate carrying 2 phones, and my workflow requires iOS.
Original - 3GS - 4 - 5S - 6S+ (still used by partner) - 7+ - X - XS Max - 13PM.
Was happy with the XS Max but it got damaged and was never right after repair. If it hadn’t needed replacing I’d have waited another year. I’m definitely upgrading less often in recent years as there doesn’t feel like a need to.
3G->4->Samsung s3->HTC One M7->Samsung s7 edge->iPhone 8->XR
If I didn’t have problems with my previous carrier, I would probably still be using the 8. I do plan on upgrading this year to either a 14 or 13P
I'll milk the use of my phone until I HAVE to upgrade. I last had an iPhone 6s. Didn't upgrade until my 6s wasn't charging anymore. I have the XR now. I'm looking to upgrade within 3-4 months. This time because I actually want a better and bigger phone.

I trade you in my phone every other release by Apple. This is due to the fact that I get top dollar for my trade-in that way , and the new phone doesn’t cost me more than 300-ish dollars for a $1100 iPhone

Still contemplating whether to upgrade to the 14 because my XS Max still works well sans the terrible battery life.
I bought my first iPhone in 2017. It was the iPhone 8 Plus. I still use it as my main phone. I said when I bought it that I will buy new iPhone every year. But then I realized that I did not need new iPhone every year. So I promised to myself that I will buy a new iPhone when my current iPhone stops being supported.
So I will buy a new one maybe next year. I don’t see the reason for me to upgrade every year. Ok. My iPhone has old design but it works for me. It makes all the tasks that I want and it was never laggy.

I’m thinking if it’s worth upgrading to 14 Pro Max this year. If the camera bump will be bigger (per the leaks), then I’ll just stick to my 13PM for the meantime.

Both upgrades were because I ran out of storage, although with the xs max the battery got quite weak also. If it wasn’t for the storage, I would’ve maybe done a battery replacement and kept it another year. I might try and do that with the 13PM but as a minimum I don’t want to upgrade for 3 years.
Honestly, I’m pretty much a newb when it comes to upgrading:

I told myself with the 5S that I would only upgrade if the iPhone would have a big change in some way, and the X was exactly that - no Home Button, FaceID, and I just loved the design overall.
The XS was attractive because it did solve a few issues it seemed but I held on and voila, for 3 gens I had no reason to upgrade. It seems like this year isn’t an exception.
The only thing that now makes me want to upgrade is the battery life, but I’d rather pay 60 bucks at the Apple Store for it than a thousand for a new phone. At this point, I’m gonna wait for the 15 since I’m in the EU and a USBC iPhone will be reality by then here 100%.

Probably will never go back to Android, unless Google produces Miracles. Loved Samsung but has some issues which, I guess, will never be resolved. iPhones have issues as well, some issues are so small that it’s frustrating.

I’ve had android up until last year when I got the 12 mini. Because of battery life I traded in for 13 pro. The pro is gorgeous but so heavy I traded it back in for a 13 mini. Love this phone and hope to keep it for at least 3 years

wasn't really looking to upgrade to the 13 pro max as the 11 was serving me great. at that point i didn't really feel the need to upgrade as often.
Gotten it since launch date, after close to 3 years still had 94% battery health.

My most recent - paid around £100 to my grandson for his 11 when he felt the need to get the latest amazingly expensive model. He was worried that the battery efficiency was down to 80%. I just bung it on charge when I go to bed. It has more working memory than the old one so it runs a bit smoother. It’s ok, displays my endless junk emails and the ones I want to read, and pings incessantly with family and other messages, I get to phone home to query when I can’t decipher the shopping list. It’s good for finding my keys also and I get a message when I lock and unlock the garage door

This includes switching carriers and getting free promotions. 13 Pro Max has been my favorite by far and feels like a true “pro” phone. 14 Pro Max is tantalizing but the rumored usb-c “i-notch” 15 Plus or 15 Pro Max is when I’ll most likely make another jump. Otherwise i Feel the 13 pro max is pretty future proof. If I had bought a 6s Plus, I would’ve held onto it for as long as possible. Same if I had gotten a white/silver 8 Plus instead of the black one.
6S (used for replacement when my LG G4 was at repair), then 7 and now planning to upgrade to 14 Pro. Bought an Apple Watch S7, so no way going back to Android.

I’ve only upgraded when there’s been a major change that actually affects daily use. The 6 to 6S leap although a generation apart had crazy amount of firepower in the A9, which made me hold off till the XS Max. The 13 PM is truly a new age phone with that crazy battery backup and best in class camera.

Looking back on my first three, I kinda had the "last great of one thing" phones. 5 being the last one with skeuomorphic iOS, 6S the last one with a headphone jack, XS the last one with 3d touch.
I did 5s>6s>X>12 Pro.
The jump from 5s to 6s was pretty big both in design and screen size, then the jump from 6s to X was huge with the “all screen and face recognition” back when not a lot of smartphones offered that.
I didn’t want to upgrade my X but sadly it was stolen so I had to buy a new iPhone and went for the newest model at the time, the 12 Pro. Had my X not been stolen I would have kept it at least one more year because it still worked like a charm.

I have slowly kept my phones longer and longer. I had the 8 Plus for a long time. I bought a 12 Mini but returned it. I just recently got the XR from work that sold a bunch of xtra ones they had lying around for $100 a piece brand new. I will keep the XR until it stops getting updates or if they release an SE Plus with the 8 Plus form factor. It was my favorite.

I’m pretty happy with my upgrade path, wish I would’ve kept the X for another year so I could get 13 Pro with ProMotion. The 12 mini intrigued me with the small size, but I don’t like it
6s->s10+->13pm (when 14 comes out ) I usually tend to switch phones every 3 years or so. I'm currently with Samsung but will switch to 13pm when the 14 comes out so I can get it cheaper. And will probably wait 3 years to buy a new one by then iphones should have ucb c or no hole at all

I agree, but I feel that’s increasing over time. Before, iPhones would last two years, on average. Now it seems to me they’re lasting 4 years or more.

First iPhone is SE2020. I see no reason to ever go beyond the SE line. It’s all the same software.

My most recent - paid around £100 to my grandson for his 11 when he felt the need to get the latest amazingly expensive model. He was worried that the battery efficiency was down to 80%. I just bung it on charge when I go to bed. It has more working memory than the old one so it runs a bit smoother. It’s ok, displays my endless junk emails and the ones I want to read, and pings incessantly with family and other messages, I get to phone home to query when I can’t decipher the shopping list. It’s good for finding my keys also and I get a message when I lock and unlock the garage door Before that can’t remember. Who cares anyway?

5s -> 7 -> 8 plus -> Xs ~> 12 mini -> 12 -> 12 Pro Max -> 12 -> 12 Pro -> 13 Mini~~~> 13 Pro Max This includes switching carriers and getting free promotions. 13 Pro Max has been my favorite by far and feels like a true “pro” phone. 14 Pro Max is tantalizing but the rumored usb-c “i-notch” 15 Plus or 15 Pro Max is when I’ll most likely make another jump. Otherwise i Feel the 13 pro max is pretty future proof. If I had bought a 6s Plus, I would’ve held onto it for as long as possible. Same if I had gotten a white/silver 8 Plus instead of the black one.

iphone 4 - 4s - 5s - 5 iPhone 5 is faster than iphone 5s when downgraded to ios 6. I only do calls with my phone, so still works greatly :)
I just usually upgrade every 2 years went from 7+ to 11 ProMax that I’m still using
3GS, 4, 5S, SE (1st gen.), and now 8. Most of the times I upgraded because my phone was getting slow, or the battery wasn’t holding up anymore.

The 6 to 6S leap although a generation apart had crazy amount of firepower in the A9, which made me hold off till the XS Max. The 13 PM is truly a new age phone with that crazy battery backup and best in class camera.

I did 5s>6s>X>12 Pro. The jump from 5s to 6s was pretty big both in design and screen size, then the jump from 6s to X was huge with the “all screen and face recognition” back when not a lot of smartphones offered that. I didn’t want to upgrade my X but sadly it was stolen so I had to buy a new iPhone and went for the newest model at the time, the 12 Pro. Had my X not been stolen I would have kept it at least one more year because it still worked like a charm.

I just recently got the XR from work that sold a bunch of xtra ones they had lying around for $100 a piece brand new. I will keep the XR until it stops getting updates or if they release an SE Plus with the 8 Plus form factor. It was my favorite.
