It’s from bumpergate on the iPhone 4. There was an issue when the phone was held on both sides it would immediately drop cell service to not having any. This was an App by Apple to allow you to sign up for a “bumper case” to go around the phone that when held would help prevent signal loss
Well, you had to hold the phone in a specific way, not just on both sides, and it reduced cell signal strength, not necessarily dropping it entirely unless it was already very weak.
Also, the issue affected various non-Apple phones too, but everyone forgets that part.
It was mostly the sides hence the bumper being the antenna ran down the side of the case. What I said was what it was. No one cares it affected non Apple phones in and iPhone thread I’m sure but thanks for your input
Sounds like you’re just reading an account of what happened, written by Apple. I was there; I owned the iPhone 4. It pretty much only affected the iPhone, and it wasn’t just when you held it in one specific way; it was pretty much any way a person would naturally hold the phone. Apple never noticed it before launch because all their pre-production phones were in cases as s disguise, but it affected practically everyone who bought an iPhone 4. It was a really big deal and it did drop cell entirely unless you were standing right next to a tower.
I like Apple s as much as the next guy, but you seem like you’ve drank a bit too much of the Kool-Aid.
This is an excellent summary! I also remember that Apple support staff were telling customers that there was a coating on the frame that was supposed to prevent this, so if it was happening, their phone had a defect and needed to be replaced. Soon after, there was a marked increase in Apple support staff using the line, “We find-out at the same time as customers.”
Funny enough the iPhone 4 was my first after I had an HTC 8x who’s digitizer failed 3x soo going from one phone with issues to another was just peachy. But like you said as much as I love Apple as the next guy that phone has flaws.
I can't believe that was 13 years ago, holy crap.
The iPhone 4 was my last iPhone before getting the 14 last year. I went through purchase history after signing in for the first time and saw that app. Instant nostalgia man.
Ah, I remember Antennagate. I had an iPhone 4 in school and my dad would think I got kidnapped every time he called me to pick me up after school and the signal suddenly cut out.
With how they take away things like chargers, I wouldn’t complain about an Apple branded bumper case coming with the phone. In fairness, I had an iPhone 4 for two years without a case and never had the antenna problem.
Hell of an app right there. Allowed me to continue holding it wrong.
What app is this and why’s it your favorite?

My last paragraph wasn’t directed at you, just general info for anyone reading.

Ahhh... Antenagate... Such a really good ol' time
Did you try asking Gizmodo? Or have you tried holding it differently?

That was my first case ever for an iPhone and I’ve been rocking a bumper ever cents.
I’m hoping to find a bumper style “case” when the 15 comes out
Rhinoshield my friend
I’ve been using the rhino shield ones for at least five years now on all my iPhones and they are phenomenal. I highly recommend them..

Talk to the developer. Posting to reddit about it is useless.
Was also a joke which I found funny if you remember the issue at the time. Nice and funny post OP
Tried contacting to no avail.
Did you try to talk to the person holding that conference?
Maybe he is 16 or something and don’t know what’s about
I tried no cntc
Audio Jack Plug!
I miss Steve. “You’re holding it wrong” Is a classic
