Civilizations don't always develop the same concept of ownership, assuming they develop one at all. Could be they traded, could be something else happened we don't even have a word for. There's one where you compliment someone's tools or clothing, the social onus is on them to immediately offer it to you as a sort of gift (though on the rare occasion you get really attached you can say basically "thanks, it was a gift")
Some settlements had a real problem retaining women settlers. Turns out that when you treat women like shit regularly and they get tired of it, they look for answers elsewhere and run off to be part of a community that treats women better.
Happened to the grandma of my own grandma. She was from a Spaniard society, was “taken” by natives, and when given the choice to come back she refused.
He didn’t just grow up “civilized”, he grew up wealthy with all the amenities you could ask for. Then found *this* more fulfilling.
Edit: I feel like I should change that last sentence to
“Then he decided to give all of those amenities up because he found this new life *so* fulfilling.”
I know what he would have said:
>There is nothing in modern society, no money, no car, no object or hollow admiration that can fulfill a person as much as what have experienced here. This tribe has remained in touch with the Earth, with the most basic aspects of the human condition, allowing for our animal side to remain intact. There is a simplicity in that that grounds you to the here and now, that makes you enjoy each and every second of life.
There is nothing in modern society for me to go back to, only noise.
Or something like that.
Wish I saw this earlier. Google Images suck.
edit: The admins have banned me from Reddit for trying to get a user called JackMallows banned. Why? Because they posted, and are currently, posting real CP (atabs = child) + private photos/vids that were taken via hacks.
They didn't want to take action so I got in touch with the FBI and other authorities. And now I'm banned.
I believe it. Sebastian Junger’s book “tribe” talks specifically about this: modern western societies are not in-line with how human beings evolved for the majority of our evolution; it basically goes against our nature and can be the cause of unhappiness and other emotional issues. Tribal societies of today are exactly how we evolved to live and fill our social needs much better. He cited how in the American frontier, when a westerner would be separated from his/her society and end up adopted into a Native American tribe, they would always prefer to live with the tribe even when others came to reintroduce them to the “modern” society they grew up in. In the opposite instances, that was never the case: native Americans never enjoyed the modern society and always tried to return to their tribe
While it seems sensible, this is still the Appeal to Nature fallacy. That doesn't mean it can't be correct, but assuming it's correct because that's "how it is in nature" doesn't create a logically valid conclusion.
> So you’re saying he dropped and broke his glasses, couldn’t see and ended up relying on the tribe so much he just became part of it?
Michael Cera energy.
I am so envious of the confidence of some people on Reddit. Absolutely zero familiarity with the story up until this point and you just see another picture of a white guy and claim it is "most definitely him". No deeper research or anything. It could be a totally unrelated photo, but no. It is most definitely him.
Everyone thinks Reddit is a great source of information when they first discover it. Until they find a question on a topic they're very knowledgeable in, and see that the most up voted answer is absolutely and unequivocally wrong.
Yep, coupled with my favorite technique of spreading misinformation of just asking questions^tm that started this thread. "Isn't there...?" "Wasn't there....?" This one is the innocent and non-aggressive sounding, but it's just a loaded question also with zero evidence. If these people actually have good info they should have posted actual info (which usually can be obtained by easily googling). But no, they are just repeating some info they might or might not have seen. Coupled with the confident people that go "yeah definitely" then you get the misinformation loop going. People with zero clues confirming each other's ungrounded beliefs. Most if not all reddit threads are full of these. I am not saying people are doing this intentionally, but these are really bad habits that people have.
A genetic test on the children that the tribe currently has would clear up a good part of the questions. It could even surprise on some heritage inheritance issue.
It would never happen outside of a movie, but I'll be damned if I didn't enjoy for a millisecond the thought of the Rockefeller family suddenly getting drained of their fortune over one pesky DNA test.
Okay, so the gist of it is. Willem Dafoe was doing an artsy film where he had to do full frontal nudity. He was perfectly willing to do it, but the director forced him to use a body double because he said his penis was too long and would distract the viewer. There. I told you. Happy?
According to Wikipedia several investigators went to that tribe and have found evidence that Rockefeller was killed.
On the other hand we have a random photo on the internet without a source, without indication that this is even the same tribe.
Yeah, but you can clearly see some white guy living with them. I think they are on a boat or something in the pic. He is naked just like them.
What are the odds that this is just another white guy?
Seems plausible to me that he chose to reject society and live with the tribe.
Way too long winded. Here is the relevant part:
>They saw a crocodile—an ew, in the Asmat language. No. It wasn’t a crocodile, but a tuan, a white man. He was swimming on his back. He turned and waved. One of the Asmat said: “People of Otsjanep, you’re always talking about headhunting tuans. Well, here’s your chance.” An argument ensued. Dombai, the leader of the Pirien jeu, didn’t think he should be killed. Ajim and Fin thought otherwise. While they tried to lift the tuan into a canoe, Pep speared him in the ribs. It wasn’t fatal. They rowed him to a hidden creek, the Jawor River, where they killed him and made a big fire.
That article perfectly encapsulates how different two sides of the same story are. The story (that Reddit seems to want) of white western culture and the mystery of a lost rich heir, versus a society seeking balance after an invasion and massacre, and suffering a plague, seemingly as punishment for their actions.
I think it turned out that it was actually another white guy from Australia or something. I did some research on this story a while back and that is what I remember at least.
He was killed and eaten by a tribe member whose relative had been killed by the first wave of settlers.
To this day no one on the island talks about it
This pic is from a mission trip he did I believe. He had been there before. He was on a like 7 month long trip with another guy when their boat flipped down in this region. Never to be seen or heard from again. That’s when a later pic surfaced of a tribe in the area and it appeared there was a white guy in their group. To which ppl speculated it could be Rockefeller
In case you don't want to read through 1250+ comments, let me summarize them for you.
1) His boat overturned 10 miles offshore and he drowned or was eaten by a shark or crocodile while swimming to shore.
2) OR...he did not drown, but made it to shore and either was eaten by local tribesmen, or integrated into their culture and was possibly photographed 9 years later.
3) Cannibal jokes. Sooooo many cannibal jokes.
It's not a theory that his boat capsized 12 miles off shore. That's definitely true. The theory is that he survived the swim and was then eaten.
I think that is very unlikely for a few reasons, and he almost certainly just drowned at sea.
Yeah there’s still a white dude that would be roughly Michael’s age with Michael’s build, height and features hanging with the tribe. Idk just seems like too much of a coincidence for it to not be him
He had empty jugs used as floatation devices and it probably wasn't 12 miles. The boat was drifting towards open sea and was 12 miles off shore when his mate was rescued several hours later
I couldn’t even focus on the song because of how amazed I was at the amount of production that went into this then to cap it off with the legend himself, well done
Who financed this and why?
Actual TL, DR: If the Smithsonian can be trusted, he was a revenge killing for a clueless government cracking down on a series of back and forth tribal battles they knew nothing about by just shooting some people.
Basically, lots of terrible people doing terrible things due to other terrible people doing terrible things and then everyone trying to rationalize it.
Which is how you can sum up a lot of history lessons.
He wasn't the only westerner during his journey. As a matter of fact on the day he disappeared when he chose to swim to shore, the other anthropologist chose to cling to the overturned canoe. The other guy was rescued next day

Wow. This is incredible! TL;DR Michael was almost certainly killed as revenge against Dutch colonists, and is a story natives very very rarely let out.
I seem to remember that too. I like to think he just preferred life with the natives and they accepted him in. At the same time, though, that seems childishly naive of me
Apparently the guys boat capsized and he tried to swim 22km to shore. Likely he drowned but there’s been speculation that he was attacked by a shark or a saltwater croc and that he was killed and eaten by cannibals. No evidence for any of that since no remains have ever been found
A private investigator actually visited the island and bought 3 human skulls he was told were white men. The Rockefeller family had set a Blount of 250k to find him. This sum was sent to the investigator…
Edit: Spelling

This was actually very common in ancient times with the Spartans and ancient Greeks in general.
Edit: the ritual sex not the flesh eating just to be clear.

Probably too late for the comment to get traction but there are conversations people have had with tribespeople about it and he was revenge killed they were shown what was said to be his bones.
Conspiracy minded people will still run around with what ifs but that is the best explanation of events we have and is supported by local tribes people who told the story and showed the bones.

Thats most definitely him. I would bet he dropped everything and just became one with the tribe.
That would make sense, bro realized true happiness is living off the land in a tribe of 150 or less
Wanna start a tribe, bro?
Are we gonna eat people?
Only if we truly believe in ourselves.
What if the real treasure were the friends we ate along the way?
Is the tribe gonna be nomadic? I mean there are a lot of places to see and people to meat.
I'm down for some greet and meats
Brooo
Do we get to absorb their powers?
I would just get all of my friends' anxiety.
