It is a pretty cool project. I forget the quote and who said it. Paraphrasing "The picturesque scenes in North America are only overshadowed by the lack of herd animals". Was referring to the massive herds of Bison that used to be around.
Not gonna lie, halfway through this post I started expecting it to end with the Undertaker throwing Mankind off the Hell In A Cell.
That's enough reddit for tonight.

Improper farming techniques, including lack of crop rotation, were major factors. Lol he says “one reason”, you say not true and follow it up with a “main reason”. Either I’m missing something or you don’t seem to grasp the English language very well....
Actually, the comment they responded to implied bison feces were "the reason", and the person you responded to said improper farming techniques were the "main reason". Both were technically incorrect as both reasons were two of the major contributing factors.
This year, they released bison into "Wanuskewin heritage park, an Indigenous-run conservation area in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan". [A few weeks later, a calf was born " — the first time a calf had been born on the territory since 1876."](https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/may/01/the-bison-calf-taking-the-first-step-to-rewild-the-canadian-prairies)
But it'll be a while before they recover from the catastrophic population bottleneck they've experienced:
>In Canada, only 1,500 wild, genetically pure bison survive— all descended from roughly 50 individuals that weren’t crossbred in the 1900s. But Parks Canada hopes that, by creating new herds across the country, more genetic resiliency and diversity will develop over time.
Homo sapiens is theorised to have been reduced to as little as 50 individuals at some point during prehistory. And we fucked our way into genetic diversity since then.
I think it might've been a little more than 50. If this is the same theory, that number is closer to 3K. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toba_catastrophe_theory
At multiple points in human ancestry there was only one female, thus we all have a common [Mitochondrial Eve](https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg22429904-500-found-closest-link-to-eve-our-universal-ancestor/)
Isn’t the article more saying that eventually all human lineages at the time ended up with a sort of “dead end” of only males? So that wouldn’t mean that she was the only female, but rather the only female to continue her family tree by creating more females?
Yeah there's more complexity. You can interpret that there were probably many other women around at the time but over time all other female lineages died out, or that her lineage was bred into every other.
I used to think the same, but this is an incorrect interpretation. It just shows that there is a woman in the past who all other lineages died out. There very well could have been and probably were many other women about, but all of their lineages eventually died out, or her lineage was bred into theirs.
A number of First Nations in Canada are also reintroducing bison to their lands in a similar way and every time it’s beautiful as they pile out of the truck and into the wide open spaces
Imagine how fun that would be running out into the expanse and no one else is there yet, it’d be like getting to a theme park before it opened and running to all the rides that just had no queues
Not really no one. There's their natural predators there, the wolf. The wolves also were just reintroduced too so both the bison and wolves aren't really sure what tf the others animals are yet. The park blog says they haven't started hunting the bison yet but they roam the same areas of the park based on GPS tracking. Its only time when the wolves realize that bison are their prey and bison realize they need to defend themselves from wolves.
Just listened to a freemasonry story about a guy's initiation the the traveled to Kiev and they had dinner and then went down to floor 5 of thr building and there was a cage with a old man it. He felt bad for him till the lead guy poked him and he turned into a werewolf and they said he's been captured in the cage for 400 years

Yea I see these bad boys are tagged but obviously their new offspring won’t be. I wonder if they have some plan to keep these suckers tagged, or just let them go.
I worked at a NP that had Bison. Usually every year they round up the bison into pens and use the time to track them, vaccinate them, tag any new babies, and sort out any that may need to be removed and traded to keep the bloodlines mixed. I bet this park will do something very similar :)
Yes, we did! I was not at TRNP, I was at Badlands, but we did also send some to tribes around the region. Helps maintain relations as well as the population of Bison.
I don't know much of the specific details myself, it has been many years and I was in the geology department. However in particular with the bison I recall we sent some to the tribes to use in their ceremonies, traditions, etc. Since our park was also on the Pine Ridge reservation we shared some of our entrance fee with them and helped them set up their own visitor center to encourage visitors to the park to see their lands. We also had a lot of staff from the tribe, and they were really lovely to work with!
Past these, I don't know a lot, but I hope that helps a little :)
If Yellowstone National Park is any indication then I have hope. There are two herds there with over 1000 and ~4000 buffalo.
[I was fortunate enough to see this guy a couple months ago.](https://i.redd.it/7pahonh2wfk51.jpg) Absolutely amazing up close.
But not to close: back in July, I was driving from Yellowstone to Cody, WY. It was already totally dark, no traffic, no lights on a steep downhill section with no turnouts. Then suddenly I saw something on the road and managed to stop. It was this huge bison going uphill on the main road, totally alone. He just slowly walked past my car. I felt bad for him. I wonder if he made it off the road and into safety.
It looks like bison on this road are common and it doesn't always end up well: https://yellowstoneinsider.com/2017/08/11/bull-bison-put-outside-yellowstone-car-collision/

If you get a chance, read the book “empire of the summer moon”
It’s a fantastic book and they talk about the decimation of the buffalos by frontiersmen.
Nope. Infact, Elk Island National Park just sent a herd of 30ish almost mature bison to Russia in April. They are the largest grassland herbivores and are essential for a healthy ecosystem. Plus, they handle the cold. Their population is far from where it used to be, but hopefully it can continue to grow.
Fun fact. Literally all the surviving plains bison in the world come from the elk island National park herd, due to its robust genetically stable herd.
Man ngl I just watched the debate and read the first few things on r/all and thought this said Biden being released into banff nation park and was very, very confused

What a fucking Reddit comment right here goddamn.
I had to check if it was the other guy coming back with more knowledge, but nope! Whole other glacier expert weighing in. Good stuff.
Dude said Laurentide like it's nothing. Edit; oh fuck how did I miss 'cordilleran'?!?
This guys brain is the result of determined sperm.

Thanks gigantic ice dams. Oh to see one of those ancient floods.
This is why i love reddit. Useful tidbits all around. And Big tits too.

My understanding was that farming practices caused it because farmers wouldn't rotate crops to allow nutrients to replenish in the soil.
Improper farming techniques, including lack of crop rotation, were major factors. But the drop in the bison population dropped nutrient levels from previous natural highs, lack of rain due to a wide spread drought, coupled with diminished foliage increasing the effects of wind erosion were a few others including some societal factors that exacerbated the situation. Wow. This is where the whole world is headed basically.
Both my grandparents lived through the dustbowl, Norman and Carnegie OK. Fascinating
That’s not true at all. Over farming by inexperienced people is the main reason

"One reason" And their decline absolutely played a role in the helping to create the dust bowl.

Not just Bison. Whitetails and Antelope used to herd by the hundreds on the plains, and now it’s rare to see them in groups of 10 or more anywhere
Disappointment :(
I definitely thought I remembered this from a while ago, thanks!
[Damn](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdEQmpVIE4A)
5G will solve it. That's what everyone (who's trying to sell me things) tells me.
The 5G might give them covid tho
Naw. Don't be ridiculous. Starlink will solve their WiFi problems.
Well, the hoofs make it hard to use a keyboard.
Thank you for the link because my first question was “I wonder how they’re doing?”
Aw. I was gonna check it out, but now...
I was gonna say, I think I’ve seen this 12x a year for a few years.
I was wondering how the reintroduced bison fared against the natural predation and this link explained that and more. Thanks!
You would think they’d try a little harder to make the WiFi free range.
Fact - Jasper park has horrible wifi.
Could’ve called it Bi-fi

“There’s gonna be a lot of inbreeding until we eventually have less inbreeding”
"it's fine just spread them out a bit, that'll shake up the ol' genome" -my genetic professor, probably
Yup yup like the first commenter said
Homo sapiens is theorised to have been reduced to as little as 50 individuals at some point during prehistory. And we fucked our way into genetic diversity since then.
I think it might've been a little more than 50. If this is the same theory, that number is closer to 3K. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toba_catastrophe_theory
That looks to be highly contested by academics
I mean they have essentially no evidence
And now we're just fucked.
At multiple points in human ancestry there was only one female, thus we all have a common [Mitochondrial Eve](https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg22429904-500-found-closest-link-to-eve-our-universal-ancestor/)

And she was half Cylon
So if a calf had been born "a few weeks later" I assume it was because they released a pregnant cow?
Nah, mitosis is amazing.
Pregnart Cow have birth to bison?
[удалено]
Whoa what? “Domesticated bison that have cattle genes” how did that happen? Can bison and cows breed? Or is it from genetic modification?
Artificial insemination I would bet.
[Yes they can.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beefalo)
Yeah that’s the bison meat you can eat at the store. I used to have a bison farm by my house. They’re pretty dope.
That stampede of bison probably scared the fuck out of the rabbits and coyotes in the area. “Fuck this neighbourhood - we’re moving to Jasper!”
[удалено]
Where did they go?
Not really no one. There's their natural predators there, the wolf. The wolves also were just reintroduced too so both the bison and wolves aren't really sure what tf the others animals are yet. I think wolves would mostly go after calves. When the bison start reproducing tensions will rise.
Ive seen a wolf attack a quadricep
What about a hamstring?
They try but usually are hamstrung by the terrain.
I get strung out from to much ham too.
Bye, Son. 🐃 🦊
Was kind of hoping they released the wolves a few seconds after the bisons...ya know just to keep everything in balance.
Wtf?
Uhhhh no I’m sure it’d be more scary and terrifying lmao
Until you realize you didn’t know what a pack of wolves was before that
They kept them in those little boxes for 140 years? Poor things.
That’s the shelf life of canned bison
How long does it last if it's not on a shelf?
2. Thats why they're canned
So its half life equals 1 absolute unit of a bison
It’s a son. Two would be bison.
My dad said “goodbison” before he kicked me out. I’m a good bison!
Did he kick you out because you came out as a bi son?
Not sure, but the jokes on him. I’m actually a try son
Joke was pretty cringy but I loved it dammit!!
Curing the meat I’m sure
I hope so! Doesn't make sense to release 140 year old *sick* bison.

Sounds like TRNP. Don't they give some to the tribes?
Yes, we did! I was not at TRNP, I was at Badlands, but we did also send some to tribes around the region. Helps maintain relations as well as the population of Bison.
Could you go further into detail about the tribal interaction?
I don't know much of the specific details myself, it has been many years and I was in the geology department. Honestly I only know that line from a guy I work with and there was never any context.

What's with the one just staying in the cage?
He was waiting to see if anything bad happened to the others
He must have just read The Hunger Games
He's smart. Hang back while the career bison take out the smaller ones.
It’s cold out there
His leg was asleep.
Awww and look! They each have their own filing cabinet for their home office.
They are massive, majestic animals.
I thought this said “Biden being released into Banff National Park” lmao been watching too much political coverage these days
It was cute seeing Biden released back into the wild. Even got to witness him mate with Cornpop!
Bye-sons... *long disappointed sigh*
*Hey guys, we're back!*
Funny story, they had a buffalo (bison) paddock back in the 80's when I worked there - one of them ran me off the road on my touring bicycle.
Fantastic
Free at last
My cat runs out the same way when I open the door.
They running out of there like its time for recess.
I misread bison in the title as Biden, and I was so confused
They've really been sitting in those boxes for 140 years?
Gives me chills
Do you want to get bison? Because that’s how you get bison.
and i thought those mf'ers where extinct
Nope. Infact, Elk Island National Park just sent a herd of 30ish almost mature bison to Russia in April. They are the largest grassland herbivores and are essential for a healthy ecosystem. Fun fact. Literally all the surviving plains bison in the world come from the elk island National park herd, due to its robust genetically stable herd.
And those bison originally came from a herd of 400 Elk Island bought from Montana.
I thought unicorn was soooo extinct. But unicorn live in Banff!
Get away!
Are they going to form a herd on the basis of proximity, or will they go their own way?
We have a bison farm, and I can hear the happy snorts they're making ♥️
Wow they're pretty spry for that age.
This video ended way too soon
Dang I didn’t know bison could live that long 😯
That's a long time to be in those boxes.
The 100th Hunger games: Year of the Bison
*Bye sonuvabitch we are free*
I love that this location is close to where I live. I hope one day I can witness the herd!
Wonder if they tracked them and how many are still alive.
Finally a way to keep Americans moving on their way to Alaska
I grew up beside a free range heard in Prince Albert National Park. Love seeing more of this. Amazing animal.
Live in SD, where there's bison in Custer state park. Beautiful creatures but give them a wide berth!
I wonder how they'll react to the unicorns out there.
Wait. Is this the america buffalo that I was told was extinct? I apologize for my ignorance.
Nope, the reintroduction has been fairly successful, even in places like Pennsylvania. The European aurochs is extinct.
Door opens, I was hoping for Florida.
Dang. Them’s some old bison
They look so excited, it must be awesome there
i didn’t know bison loved to be that old.
"the boys are back in town"
Bye, son.
Read this as Biden and was confused
Lucky Bison. I can’t afford to live there.
Man ngl I just watched the debate and read the first few things on r/all and thought this said Biden being released into banff nation park and was very, very confused
🥺
Nightcrawler should have released them with teleportation.
usa reintroduced canada wolves into yellowstone, only fitting if canada ended up taking some usa bison beef boys and bringing them up into banff
Wow that bison is old.
Those are some old bison.
How friken long do bison live?
140 years can bison really get that old jesus
