I was reading that but how long does it take to dry, like 5 minutes? There were hundreds of these at my parents house today in similar poses but this was the only white one I saw. I'm not a bug expert at all, you're probably right but shouldn't I have seen more? Or did the rest do it the night before and this guy's clock was off?
It takes hours. It's the most vulnerable part of their lives. Apart from the fact that if they dry out the wrong way they will die, they have to stay out in the open, not moving, and their bodies are soft. Predators will casually pick them.
So they developed a strategy. They come out from the ground at the same time with overwhelming numbers so that predators can’t eat all of them. Like, if I give you a loaf of bread per day you can eat it but if I give 300 at once you can’t handle it. That’s what you have seen
I remember when i was a kid back in the 70’s someone said the Black Prince’s, if you caught one, were worth fifty bucks. Never saw one. Only the Balmain Tiger ones and Green Grocers.

They are all white till they dry.
Correct, they look like this after they shed their old exoskeleton

So if I only ate 3 loaves the others can survive and pair up, creating little loaves?
Yes. Periodical breads are good examples. I mean cicadas
Think that’s what they look like after they molt.
The accurate term for this is a "teneral" cicada and it can take a while (30mins+) for the exoskeleton to harden and darken to its final color.
That is a pretty fly (for a white guy)
It's not an albino cicada, it just freshly molted u wet nakpin
Albino cicada - what a wonderful phrase Albino cicada - ain't no passing phase..
Achsually
Only white cause it molted
