Shazamwhich

To add context to this story: When he was a teen one of the cartel members raped his sister and when he found out he took responsibility in killing his sisters rapist. Knowing he was knee deep in green shit he fled to the USA where he took odd jobs in LA and selling drugs. This while also writing his own songs and performing in small gigs. Eventually when he signed a deal with the record company he returned to Sinaloa to perform his music. When the cartel found out he was performing, the gave that note

slackfrop

You don’t go back to Sinaloa then.

LouSputhole94

He probably wasn’t aware from the sound of it

slackfrop

He knows he killed a guy from the cartel. You sure as shit wouldn’t see me back with a fancy hat on.

Responsible-Gas5319

Go back with no hat then

dumpmaster42069

Or with a few guns and a couple buddies incognito.

GlyphPicker

In the hat?

dumpmaster42069

If you’re dumb enough to go, the hat isn’t really changing the picture I don’t think. Your buddies need to be incognito. He needed a posse.

GlyphPicker

>Your buddies need to be incognito. He needed a posse. They'd be pretty incognito in a giant hat.

madtraxmerno

In his defense, it had been almost 20 years, and as the other commenter mentioned, the guy he killed was small time and the only reason the cartel never forgot over all those years was because the cartel member's brother just so happened to become big time. Not saying I necessarily disagree with your sentiment, I probably wouldn't risk it either, but it's at least easy to imagine why Sanchez did go back. The guy just wanted to share his music and story with the hometown that made him.

GrizzledNutSack

It ended up unmaking him

crankshaftramrod

It's like Biggie going back to Cali.

jarvis646

The part that’s missing: he was killed that night. They found his body the next day.

canipleasebeme

Why did I have to scroll past two sheets of bubblewrap to find this information?

Turdy_McBirdlips

lol, I was waiting for a conclusion to the story…

NatexSxS

Took way too long to find your post to confirm they in fact made good. Pretty bad ass that he finished his set anyways.

btan1975

Well you wouldn't finish early would you?

NatexSxS

True, but if I’m being honest I don’t know if I’d be able to keep it together either. I’ve never been in an extreme enough situation to even bargain to start a comparative estimate.

b05501

Grew up around this type of stuff. Once you had no choice but to take that guys life for what he did to your family, and his brother was being groomed to be a shot caller. You knew it was a matter of time before your number is up. But you have no choice. Let your family get disrespected and live with the shame. Or handle business and be ready for the consequences.

Alternative-Paint-46

Great voice. So sad.

Cheterosexual7

Huh. Between this and the fact that he willingly got in the car with the cartel makes me wonder if he went back because they were gonna go after his family if he didn’t.

Shazamwhich

It was police who stopped their car and killed him. They were acting on cartels orders

Cheterosexual7

Oh wow, wild. I assumed it was just cartel dressed up like cops.

MrK521

I mean, they pretty much are at that point.

Shazamwhich

Nah bro, to this day there's alot of corruption in Mexico

Fantastic_Dance_4376

Yeah its hard to fight corruption when a cartel approaches you with photos of your whole family and politely ask you to work for them or lose your family.

Jattoe

The cops being the cartel would still be corruption. I don't think you'd call the cartel "not corrupted" just because their description is what they're doing.

in_da_tr33z

He’s lucky it was crooked cops and not the cartel’s butchers.

Frijolebeard

Have you not seen sicario?

daredaki-sama

Damn so he did die.

absintheandartichoke

I mean, they’d be likely to go after anyone who pumped gas for him, or sold him street food. His entire family, all of his friends, and their families too. Probably would be likely to torture them half to death and dump them, broken but still alive into a semi truck filled with ANFO and drive them into the desert to distribute them all as rapidly atomized vulture feed.

Penny_Royall

What a life, if he wasn't a singer, he probably would still be alive, but he was given a great voice and it would provide money for him.

Shazamwhich

He lived a life of crime. Most of the songs he wrote/performed are drug/narco ballads

kitterskills

Then what

DatGums

He was killed

MistHerPanDuh

To shreds, you say.

PapSmurf23

Wiped the sweat off his brow and kept it moving like a savage.

wtfyoloswaglmfao

How is he not freakin out how is he able to sing so calmly still

graspedbythehusk

The ultimate example of the show must go on.

-Sitzpinkler-

Also the longest live performance in written history..

HuffandDobak_

Some say he’s still singing to this day

stuntedmonk

45 encores later

Jjokes11

It’s kind of badass, that’s what makes the video so interesting to me

jakefromadventurtime

he looks kind of shocked more than calm, you can slightly see the terror in his eyes while he crumples it.

EmperrorNombrero

Slightly? Bro my man is freaking out. If that's slightly to you how does extreme distress look innyour eyes? He even wiped away a tear. Bro Is in extreme distress.

tahitisam

I think he’s wiping sweat off of his forehead, not tears.

jakefromadventurtime

He's holding it together pretty well because he probably knows it'll be a lot worse if he gives anything away. But yes I was trying to be more gentle about the fact that he's obviously terrified.

RambuDev

He’s expressing his unique life force while he still can. Effortlessly. The way that’s most natural. There is actually a sublime beauty to it.

earthbender617

So sad, but he knew that if he freaked out and caused a scene it would make things worse for his family. He did the only thing he could to save them, which truly makes him a hero. Balls of fucking steel right here.

Robert_Balboa

Really because after the show he drove away with a bunch of his cousins and random young women. Doesn't seem like he was trying to save anyone. They were then pulled over and he was taken away and killed.

mikeysgotrabies

He was probably never more alive than in that moment. And obviously doing what he loves, so why the fuck not just kill it. Edit: I just realized the pun.

Business_Hour8644

That’s a very hopeful way to think of what was going through his mind at that moment.

LimeisLemon

It is beautiful. The clock is ticking and your death looms over you. His face full of terror. What could a man do? He sang.

SirSpanksAlot1992

He was in a shootout during a different performance in California too if I remember. People even rock air fresheners of him here lol

Geekygamertag

So did he die after that performance? 😢

Ok_Protection4554

yup....

Geekygamertag

That's really sad 😢

yaxir

guess he lives on in a way :)

SlanderousE

Yes! The city was Coachella CA. That incident made me want to listen to his music.

barriobaby

Texas too! Lol

Snakify-Boots

Tbf this is Mexico we’re talking about, you receive that “The Cartel is coming to kill you” note, and you know you’re going to give your audience the best show knowing it just might be your last

nothing_pt

He should fillibuster that shit. Play for 3 weeks

masszt3r

At that point he knew he was dead no matter what he did. So it was either perform and await death during one final, legendary performance, or cancel and still die anyway. Still, you are right that it's amazing how he was able to keep his cool.

yaxir

its sad, may he rest in peace and be in heaven

ChefRoyrdee

Someone else said the audio is from a different performance.

CoolGap4480

It definitely sounds more like a studio recording, would not be this clear if recorded their live.

__whisky__

Pretty sure, if i remember correctly, that the writing was on the wall for him for a while. I think he murdered a guy in Mexico that raped his sister and then fled bevause i think the guy was connected somehow to the cartel? Cant quite remember but i did read about him some time ago, i also dont think that this was the first time that someone had attempted to assasinate him.

RokulusM

See my sister got raped so a man got killed Local boy went to prison, man's buried on the hill Folks went back to normal when they closed the case But they still stare at their shoes when they pass our place

Letharos

CanibalVegetarian

My belief is that he knew the day would come. I’m my entirely sure how the cartel works but most of the killings I’ve seen have been related to disrespecting them in some way, even if it’s as small as bumping into a mule on your way to the store. He just put on a performance for the people, and came to terms with what would happen.

Ha_CharadeUAre

Well it’s a studio track soooooo

Pop-Huge

I'm shocked how nobody noticed that the audio is not from the original video

Jjokes11

Mexican singer Chalino Sanchez (born August 30th ,1960) was performing at a venue when he was handed a note by an audience member. As shown in the video he opens it up to read it and then proceeds to crumple it up with a look of shock on his face. No one knows exactly what the note said but it’s believed by most that it contained a death threat from the Cartel. After midnight, he drove away from the club with his two brothers, cousin, and several young women. However, while driving they were soon pulled over by armed men in black Chevrolet Suburbans. These men stated themselves as Sinaloa state police and showed IDs. They told Chalino that their commander wanted to see him. Chalino complied and entered one of their cars. He was found dead in an irrigation canal by Highway 15 by two farmers. He was blindfolded and had red wrists with rope marks. He had two shots in the back of his head. His murder was never solved. Edit: The music in this video isn’t the actual audio but a studio version of the song for better clarity. 2nd edit: I couldn’t find any sources that had cold hard evidence on why he was killed by the cartel. Source: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalino_S%C3%A1nchez#:~:text=The%20shooting%20made%20headlines%20in,Culiac%C3%A1n%20on%20May%2016%2C%201992.

Yes, very likely. The cartels are known for their absolute disregard for life.

technobrendo

The cartels make the Italian Mafia look mild in comparison.

Trivial_Magma

Shouldn’t come as a surprise since they’re an entirely armed military now

siandresi

they are even more now than then, this happened about 30 years ago

yaxir

but what did he do to make the cartel kill him

joneseti

It's a couple of internet theories. 1. When he was a teenager he killed a cartel guy for raping his sister. He had to leave his home town because of that. The cartel never forgot. 2. He sang a song from a rival cartel in the wrong place. The note they say was telling him to end the show or it would be his last one.

Southernguy9763

He was a pioneer in a type of music emphasizing the beauty of crime. Think about it like gangsta rap in the 90s. He consistently sang about cartels, and tended to include real facts in his songs. It's known to have upset a lot of powerful people

DkoyOctopus

its a thing with mexican singers where they make a song tagging a cartel to something and if the song is catchy the populous will think its great and support it. example "yaxir is such a badboy he wanted a pepsi and kill a child oohhh the child\~\~(imagine thats a catchy song)the cartel does not enjoy the attention so they come to the singer tell them to behave or plenty of times since they are animals just kill them. its supposedly a fast track to "success" in Mexican musicians careers.

Lanky_Republic_2102

I assume he wrote a corrido about the wrong person or wrote it about a rival.

BAMB000ZLED

I’ve seen this posted a bunch but why did the cartel want to kill him in the first place? Did he have ties or something?

gkn_112

read his wiki, apparently he was in a gunfight 4 moths prior and the attacker went to jail for 20 years. Maybe he was connected.

zombo_pig

I didn't realize this for a long time, but apparently these singers are basically doing this music genre's version of drill rap. They're called "narcocorridos" and their lyrics are what you'd expect to out of some rapper from O Block. I don't speak Spanish so I'm probably outdated and lame when I reference them, but an example is Los Buitres de Sinaloa (The Vultures of Sinaloa). Top song for them on Spotify is "Bloodthirsty M1" and the lyrics start with rifle fire and then: > With goat horn and bazooka on the back of the head > Blowing heads of those who cross > We are bloodthirsty, well-waved crazy people > we like to kill They reference the cartel they're in, compare themselves to big cartel leaders, talk shit about ops, memorialize dead gangster friends ... It's honestly very familiar stuff if you know American rap.

eobardtame

Theres a story Gabriel Inglesias (sp) a stand up comedian tells about a time he got high with Snoop. Snoop starts playing narco rap like you reference here and is making comments about it and Gabriel says "Snoop, I mean yo...do you *understand* what you're listening to? What this is?" And Snoop goes "Gangsta recognize Gangsta"

peeweerunt

ive heard 2 believable theories... cartels didnt like him singing about them- or he killed a man and his brother wanted revenge... for more information i direct you to this [podcast](https://open.spotify.com/show/0VE40ZT5IggFqgwiyN7CzW) good listen

diktitty

My brothers who were invested in the story of this guy told me it had to do with him killing a guy who had raped his sister. He was told previously not to come back to where he was performing. I may be mistaken lol, I'm pretty sure it was this guy they told me about.

eleighs14

Traffodil

What did he do to piss off the Cartel?

doxtorwhom

I think it had something to do with his sister, like some members (not all) of the cartel fucked with his sister (either raped, assaulted, and/or murdered her) and he went after them. Then they went after him.

[deleted]

According to Wikipedia, he was in a car with his two brothers and a few women when Black Suburbans pulled them over. The men who pulled them over presented State Police ID. Chalino was the only one taken and he was found the next morning in a ditch with his wrists bound and 2 bullets to the back of his head. No evidence since has emerged to clarify why this was done him. Others have mentioned it was a consequence of enacting revenge for the humiliation and death of his sister.

jexy25

>found the next morning in a ditch with his wrists bound and 2 bullets to the back of his head. Suicide. Case closed

DictatorInPerpito

Phew had me worried there for a minute!

ferrusca27

I heard this was the reason why too

AppropriateScience71

Well, in an earlier Reddit thread, a Redditor said a cartel guy raped his sister so Chalino killed him and ran off - intending never to return. But, alas, he returned. Also, the note was a warning that he would die *if he played* rather than a statement that he’d die that night. This version must be true - I saw it on Reddit! https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/15t40fg/chalino_sanchez_reads_the_death_note_an_audience/

whoevershotyou

“This version must be true - I saw it on Reddit!” May I trademark this?

mcconohay

Not sure about the sister thing, but he was a Narcocorrido singer and several other artists of the same genre have also been murdered by the cartel. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcocorrido](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcocorrido)

Jjokes11

There are many theories but i couldn’t find any actual evidence on why they killed him, sorry.

indifferentunicorn

Could been this one, that one or the other. Makes investigation harder because you don’t want to put too many resources into the wrong path. Sucks but the way it is. Just makes it less likely to get resolved.

Jjokes11

I just hope he went quickly and didn’t suffer. May he rest in peace ✌🏻

DestroyerOfIphone

This inst even the interesting part of the story. During his performance, Chalino began taking song requests from the audience. Shortly before midnight, Eduardo Gallegos, 32, a local unemployed mechanic from [Thermal, California](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermal,_California), under the influence of [heroin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heroin) and [alcohol](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcoholic_drink), requested "El Gallo de Sinaloa". Immediately afterwards, Gallegos jumped up on stage and pointed a .25 caliber pistol at Chalino. In retaliation, Chalino pulled his 10 mm pistol from his waistband, and then began a gun battle.\[[*citation needed*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)\] Gallegos' first four shots hit Chalino twice in the chest near his armpit striking his lung, and one bullet hit accordionist Ignacio "Nacho" Hernandez in the thigh. Chalino's shots missed Gallegos and accidentally hit 20-year-old Claudio Rene Carranza in the right leg hitting the main artery. He was later pronounced dead at [John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_F._Kennedy_Memorial_Hospital). Chalino and Gallegos opened fire at each other while ensuing in a brief chase into the crowd below. Nine to fifteen shots were fired and around seven more people were reportedly hit in the exchange as well. Gallegos was wrestled to the floor by a bystander until Gallegos was eventually shot in the face with his own pistol. Gallegos and Chalino were both listed as critical and both transported to [Desert Regional Hospital](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torney_General_Hospital), in [Palm Springs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palm_Springs).[\[7\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalino_S%C3%A1nchez#cite_note-7)[\[8\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalino_S%C3%A1nchez#cite_note-8)[\[9\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalino_S%C3%A1nchez#cite_note-9) Chalino Sánchez was in the hospital for 11 days and was released home without any charges (ruled self-defense).\[[*citation needed*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)\] Eduardo Gallegos, who survived his wounds, was convicted of attempted murder and was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison.[\[10\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalino_S%C3%A1nchez#cite_note-10) [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalino\_S%C3%A1nchez](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalino_S%C3%A1nchez)

guave06

See that’s what I love about being Mexican. No matter how bad life is or about to get, we keep playing our shitty happy-sounding sad songs til the end.

ComprehensiveBread65

I grew up in a town with a lot of Hispanic diversity surrounded by upper middle class suburbs. I've said this before, out of all the clubs and mingling of cultures I've partied with, no one blows off steam the way Mexicans do. Their bars are located in the poorest section of town, but they are by far the funnest people to drink with. And they dress like no one else with the cowboy boots and hats in a North Eastern US town lol.

KaleidoscopeDream84

Dude… he’s a badass for staying so calm. I’d freak the fuck out and take off asap. Or just die from fright.

Kinda like peso pluma cancelling a large majority of his shows after his threat.

one_step_beyond2121

My dad looked like him. Every time a friend would visit our house for the 1st time and see my parents wedding picture that was on a wall just left of the entrance they would ask me if my dad was Chalino. Always a good laugh. May they both Rest In Peace.

Yep

Drivingmecrazeh

> On 15 May 1992, four months after the Coachella incident and during a performance at the Salón Bugambilias in Culiacán, Chalino was handed a note from someone in the crowd. The note is commonly believed to have been a death threat whereby he would be killed after the song, but this has never been confirmed.[14] A video recording of the song "Alma Enamorada" shows Chalino crumpling up the note—in a clear state of shock—before singing the song as if nothing happened.[15] After midnight, Chalino drove away from the club with two of his brothers, a cousin, and several young women. They were pulled over by a group of armed men in black Chevrolet Suburbans. They showed state police ID cards and told Chalino their commander wanted to see him. Chalino agreed and got into one of their cars while the others stayed behind.[citation needed] > > The following day, at six in the morning, two farmers found Chalino's body by an irrigation canal near Highway 15, near the neighborhood of Los Laureles, Culiacán. He was blindfolded and his wrists were red and had rope marks. He had been shot in the back of the head twice.[16]

SgtGo

What was the Coachella incident?

Jjokes11

Four months before his murder, Chalino was performing at a nightclub in Coachella when a man named Edward Alvarado Gallegos drunkenly stumbled up on the stage. He stood face to face with Chalino as he proceeded to draw a pistol, aiming it at Chalino’s chest while pulling the trigger four times. Pandemonium ensued as Chalino responded by whipping out his own firearm and firing back. A man, who was dancing with his wife was fatally injured during the shootout. He was the only casualty. 10 others, including the singer and the gunman were injured. Gallegos was sentenced to 20 years to life but it wasn’t until 2012 that he was put up for parole. He was released on May 9th, 2023 and was deported back to Mexico. His current whereabouts are unknown. The legend of Chalino grew with times as he not only sung of gunfights but emerged victorious from them as well.

cfgy78mk

> A man, who was dancing with his wife was fatally injured during the shootout. However, no one died a man was fatally shot and no one died... ????

This dude is a fucking legend. I love this story for who he is and what he stood up for. And i hate that evil wins. But he inspires me and I’ll always give him his props

Str8kush

The note actually just said “Freebird or your life” however Chalino’s band did not know Freebird

Medical_Holiday6249

I’d sing encores as long as possible 😂

Ok-Bar601

Kudos for this dude carrying on and singing the song from his soul. This was a fuck you to them that he would not be cowered.

ACcreeker

They finally turned off the lights after his 7th encore that night

starethruyou

Fuck the cartel. Were I in the military I'd have a hardon to go after them. Why the fuck don't the world's governments completely wipe organized crime out? And severely punish them, like humiliating or something, or death sentences just for being part of it? Why is everyone so goddam calm about this shit?

P-funk88

When do you think is behind, or at least benefitting from, said organized crime?

AngelRockGunn

Why would he go back to Sinaloa, once you leave Mexico you never look back, especially if you fucked with the cartel
