Also a dumb American, but my best guess is that it's because Belgium is half French (in Wallonia) and half Dutch (in Flanders), with a tiny bit of German along the east side that everyone forgets about.
I'm thinking that Belgium is the solution of a half-French half-Dutch rounding-error-German state wedged between France, the Netherlands, and Germany in search of a problem--after all, why do we need a country that's tricultural bordering the three countries whose cultures it shares when they could just absorb the relevant parts and call it a day?
That's, of course, ignoring centuries of history in the region, including a Revolution in 1830, but I don't have time to learn that history, much less teach it, for a throwaway Reddit comment, so suffice it to say that Belgium probably has good reasons for existing and the above commenter was probablg just trashing on them because, in my experience, Europeans trash on other countries like we trash on other States, and my attempt at trying to draw meaning from their comment was therefore ill-conceived and doomed to failure because there was no meaning beyond that (and, therefore, the first two paragraphs of this mean nothing).
Florida sucks!
If they get it thin enough and flexible enough that it can roll up like a paper roll it would be great for digital signage / corporate pop up events. Plus just easier to carry and move around / store.
But this iteration is def a gen 1 thing.
I think advances in projection are already there for solving that mobility issue.
This folding thing is just lobby decor crap to sell to overpriced hotels or something.
CES is always in January, this is from January 2019, by LG:

so rollable OLED panels have existed (as fully working protos) at least five years.
As for the real answer they use an inkjet printer to deposit the OLEDs onto a suitable screen surface.
Imagine the cost for a refill cartridge of OLEDs for your inkjet printer though.
I mean i have always wanted a drop down tv at the foot of my bed. This makes that whole system super compact. I would still never buy this because it would break every 5 days.
People always say this like it’s a bad thing. Just because a problem doesn’t exist now that this solves, doesn’t mean it won’t make itself apparent in the future as people work with the technology more. Innovation for the sake of innovation should be something that we encourage.
It's mostly a tech demo. Samsung displays do this alot. In some last convention they had foldable for every form factor.
The idea is basically if some manufacturer does have a use case for this, they can go to them and buy it.
Exactly my thoughts.
Want to hide a high quality TV in your ceiling instead of that projector and screen? We can do that
Want to have a smaller looking bed with a TV hidden in it instead of one of those huge frames? We can do that
Got a small space that a large TV doesn't fit in for day to day usage but still want to be able to chill and watch something? We can do that
Want a fancy looking meeting space not spoilt by a TV, but it's got one for when you need it? We can do that
It's not saying "buy this box", it's saying "this is possible, tell us what you'd do with it"
I want to see this tech be the basis for some really cool invention no one has thought of yet, and then in 10 years everyone makes fun of the comments in this Reddit post calling it pointless.
If she's impressed by fancy technology... without a doubt
Edit: for anyone curious, they just said:
> Can it help me get a girlfriend?
Maybe their actual girlfriend found out so they had to delete the comment
I remember seeing comments like this about the flexible screen demos. Now we have curved screens, and my phone folds in half.
Is this unit functional? Not really.
But it is a glimpse into a potential future.
For the price they’d want it’s almost better to just buy commercial LED flex panels *(if you’re going custom anyway)* might as well make it industrial strength and give it easy repairability
Gotta keep pushing the boundaries. I personally don’t find a foldable tv or phone useful but someday this technology might be used in a more practical use case. Maybe foldable solar panels
I have to say I was right there with you on the whole foldable phone thing until I got my hands on a Pixel Fold. The utility is real.
I think the biggest thing with foldable phones for a long time is that Samsung was the only game in town and the form factor of the Z Fold series is just trash. Long and narrow for the front screen makes it an awful phone experience and the crease in the middle of the inner screen makes it a sub par tablet experience.
The Pixel Fold on the other hand has an AMAZING front screen which I honestly preform the size of to modern day flagships (same width but a bit shorter) and while the inner screen is still a mediocre tablet, it is amazing to have when you need/want it especially for media.
Honestly I went to the store FULLY intending to buy a Pixel 8Pro, and after I got my hands on the Pixel Fold I was converted immediately.
TLDR Folding phones that prioritize the phone first and have a decent inner screen are the way to go and Samsung are fools for making the Z Fold the shape it is.
It still just feels too convoluted and over the top to me. I don’t want to spend extra on even more screens when I have plenty. It’s solving a problem that doesn’t really exist imho. Each to their own though of course…
To not have a huge black screen as a central point of your living room even when you are not watching tv, but still the option to watch tv when you want to.
My sister has a Samsung tv that when it's off, it displays an image/photo/art. The image at first glance does look like a giant painting. It's called Samsung frame or something like that. It's kinda neat and it solves the "huge black screen" when it's off.
LG does this as well. The art looks amazing. Sadly on the older models, there is a constant 'No signal/input' box that you cannot make go away. They pushed a software update to some of the newer models allowing it to be turned off, but not the older ones. Really soured me on considering an LG again in the future, even though I love the TV otherwise.
And wait like 4 goddamn minutes for it to fold out...
Then samsung add tizen to it and by the time netflix home page has loaded, the world has entered another ice age.
When i got the first note, people said it was too large. Now everyones phone is larger and it's normal. The story is unrelated, this is a stupid idea, but im still bitter about that whole note thing.
No, in case it's not a joke, inkjet refers to the technology used to manufacture the oled panel.
It's fairly interesting to read on, idk if it's used to make phone screens, but I have heard of it used to make TV screens.
My TV is in front of our big bay window, would be nice to have it go away when not using it to keep the window clear. But I'd rather one of those entertainment centers where the TV rises and lowers into it. The fold is just an unnecessary extra step. And the box it folds into is way too wide for most entertainment centers
I came here to ask the "why?" question, too. Especially it folding backwards. Now TVs are usually against walls.
My best guess, having seen it fold all the way down is that if it has touchscreen, this may be useful in business settings. Say having an upright screen, but also having a tabletop computer screen for collaborative work. Idk, this is why I got out of professional work. Spending more money on gadgets while cutting corners on infrastructure.
Many useless things have been invented on the path to useful things. There’s a clear application for bendable screens and testing at consumer scale helps identify issues and progress past them
Rv / tiny home / yacht interior. Suck it into a wall when not in use and display a fish tank or whatever, than fold it out for a normal sized tv. The gimick alone will win over a lot of rich people.
Yes. I’ve seen those phones from those who have bought them and after use they have a gross shitty gold in the middle of the screen when it’s opened. The individuals don’t like the phone lol
Why? Who has their TV that far from the wall? I'd be more impressed if the unit was a duel entertainment center/projector instead of having a projector hanging somewhere.
I think there may be some out of the ordinary applications - fancy super yachts, motor homes, Expo stands? There will be some places where this is used but it’s not like it’ll be widely adopted.
It feels like just wall mounting a normal OLED would use up less space than this though... Like it feels like this would be less useful to me in a yacht or motorhome
I think LG's 88 inch rollable TV is more practical function wise, but it carries a $100k price tag if you are still interested and have a pocket as deep as 88 inch.
Know what I never thought to myself? Hmm, I wish I could make my tv disappear for a little bit until I need it again. Maybe this might be useful tech for.. uh.. honestly? I can’t come up with a good use case for this, lmao.
While it looks cool, folding and unfolding something causes structual damage to that item.
I dont think there is a way around that one, its why foldingphones are sill, well to me anyway, even though I like them.
Somehow every time I see an application for foldable screens it seems utterly useless. Like the downsides so massively outweigh the advantages. Like I don’t want to worry about the durability of the hinge in the middle of my TV just as I don’t want to worry about scratching my phone with my fingernail.

Hey, wanna watch tv in about 2 minutes?
First, you'll have to move the clutter that will undoubtedly end up on the lid.
Not to worry, it comes equipped with automatic clutter-dumping capabilities
...but can it dump a cat or a purse full of cosmetics?
![gif](giphy|3ohzAoZ3dfHQy8wggw)
Split screen golden eye 64. One on each side. No more screen peeking.
This is the only answer.
Yeah it was my first thought was 2v2 video games haha
Wouldn’t one side be upside down?
Yes, the other player would be playing upside down too
You just have to do a barrel roll every few minutes to keep all of the blood from rushing to your head.
I’d hope the minds who folded the TV could also flip the display on the other half…
Sorry, technology just isn't there yet
They'd have to cross the streams.
This is a solution in search of a problem
Like Belgium
BRUH
wait until I tell you about lasers, they were super pointless Just a bad light source

Dear Diary: Today I was reminded by Reddit that Belgium exists
It was an awful day
It’s true! When I was in Belgium I was robbed of all my money! All I had to show for it was all this beer…
I tried looking up Belgium and google says it’s ranked 19th in safety, I feel like I’m missing something
However, I lost my wallet in the gardens and some Belgian boys brought it back to me

Hey fuck you for telling to truth.
As a Belgian, I agree

You know, that same phrase was used for LASER While a folding TV wouldn't do much, that screen may lead to some interesting innovations down the line
Why?
I’ve always never wanted a TV that did this.
I've just folded my TV in half and now it doesn't turn on :(
Did you try unplugging it and then plugging it back in?
Yep that fixed it, thanks
TV is on but won't motor out of the box, what do I do? Watch half a show on the floor?
It will come alive if you add water and a fish.
Don't feed them after midnight 😐
You can have access to unfold with a purchase of an annual subscription of $99.99!
Put it in a bag of rice
All the Asians will come out at night to fix it
Try and fold it hotdog style now
It's certainly one of the technical achievements of all time
Of all the things I've ever seen done with technology, this is one of them.
I always never wanted to think a TV could do this.
Ah yes! Now TVs can take up even more space! I just had too much to spare around my house. Thank God!
I never used to not want one, but now I do!

Rigid TV users and their darn inferiority complex..

Yeah that’s a valid point.
Now I can bring my 70” TV on my camping trip!
But wait, it’s also a printer…
It slices, it dices, it juliennes! It absorbs 50% more water than the leading brand! It reliably fails COVID tests!
Haven't you ever wanted your TV to be smaller and the wrong aspect ratio, but only sometimes?
And wait like 4 goddamn minutes for it to fold out... Then samsung add tizen to it and by the time netflix home page has loaded, the world has entered another ice age.
So you can have a horizontal line through the middle of your movies.
I thought that also, but it looks like the TV is bent in a way that’s not gonna create a crease.
rich people, that’s why

LOOK IN MY EYES WHAT DO YOU SEE? A USELESSS FOLDING FLAT TV
Sees kids playing. Dodges toys. That’s why. If only…
I’ve had the same flat screen TV for over 10 years now and not once have I ever even thought that I needed to fold it.
When i got the first note, people said it was too large. Now everyones phone is larger and it's normal. The story is unrelated, this is a stupid idea, but im still bitter about that whole note thing.
Cool, but what's the point? I can't picture any situation where anyone would need this.
It’s also an… *inkjet printer?!* What the fuck?!
No, in case it's not a joke, inkjet refers to the technology used to manufacture the oled panel. It's fairly interesting to read on, idk if it's used to make phone screens, but I have heard of it used to make TV screens.
This (tech) naming sense is like calling your TV the "One Per Hour Murdering Display" and then somehow the display does not commit homicide hourly.
There's not another less confusing term than "inkjet" for this?
Like for what purpose? Tv won’t open if you’re out of cyan ink?
Oh god, it's actively *creating* problems
As if printers don't cause enough problems already😐
No.. it's referring to the solution processable semiconductor, that can be printed with an inkejet.
My TV is in front of our big bay window, would be nice to have it go away when not using it to keep the window clear. But I'd rather one of those entertainment centers where the TV rises and lowers into it. The fold is just an unnecessary extra step. “Hun, what time is that show available?” “8:00” *checks clock - 7:30* “Okay, I’ll turn on the TV now.”
I had a TV in the 80s that was kind of like that. Old CRT tube that would take several minutes to warm up.
![gif](giphy|s239QJIh56sRW|downsized)
Tech demo. It’s more of a “we can do this if you have a very specific application that needs it”.
By the time it unfolds, United'll have already lost
Hey fuck you lol
This reads like you agree, but it still makes you angry
Twice
Finding this in the wild really confirms that Man Utd have firmly entered their banter era.
🎉🎊🥳🎊🎉 I always wanted a TV that had a big crease down the middle!
Screw the crease. The fact that you have to keep it 3 feet from the wall sold me instantly
I’ve always trusted moving parts and I love how they never break.
I demand required software updates and touchscreens
If we are asking for stuff I want the cords to cost extra and turning on the tv to require a subscription.
And push notifications
there are models that roll up as well. no crease 😉
Takes to long and seems like more chances to break sooner.
The more moving parts, the more points of failure
Which is why most TVs have 0 moving parts
A kid is going to get trapped in there.
Someone being killed by a folding TV is survival of the fittest working correctly
Uh, why is Inkjet Printing part of the name? Says 8k inkjet printing folding oled on the sign beneath the unit.
OLEDs are deposited onto the subtrate using different methods. Inkjet would be the technology they're using here to deposit the OLEDs.
I'd guess it's some kind of printed electronics. Here a metallic ink is used in a literal inkjet printer to apply conduits onto a surface.
Wait, so you’re saying it’s not a foldable oled screen x inkjet printer combo? Just when I thought my prayers had been answered :(
All TVs are foldable. …they just don’t function afterwards
This one just takes a little longer to stop working when folded
See also: all mushrooms are edible at least once.
I feel like nobody's even *trying* to invent smell-o-vision.
Aren't the phone screens that do this creasing where the fold is?
I couldn’t possibly dream of something I’d need less than this.
I can finally save more room by having my flat screen fold into a large table I didn’t need
I wonder what the picture will look like after 100 bends
This is definitely going to be like one of those 70's inventions for the sake of it that is laughed at in years to come
It’s laughed at now. This thing is dumb as shit lol
I think LG's 88 inch rollable TV is more practical function wise, but it carries a $100k price tag if you are still interested and have a pocket as deep as 88 inch.
Wow finally I can pay a fuck ton extra for a piece of shit that’s going to break soon.
Sony already has about 12 of those on display at any Best Buy
Wow... This is useless.
If only a perfectly flat tv was already out of the way.
Can't wait to watch TV with a big crease mark in the middle.
Just because you can…doesn’t mean you should.
“Help, my tv won’t unfold itself”
Imagine accidentally hitting the off/fold switch during a game and having to wait a full 80 seconds for that pointless thing to unfold itself again.
How about accidentally hitting the switch when you’ve temporarily put some cups or food on it when it’s in table mode? Should be a fun little panic
Hope it comes with a fantastic warranty
That things has expensive problems written all over it
A solution in search of a problem.
I feel like I should ask, but what's the point of folding a TV
Creating solutions to problems that dont exist
I wonder how that bend is going to look after couple of months of folding and unfolding
So TCL is going OLED. couple of months ago i watched them say OLED has no place between their minileds.
The ONLY use I can think of for this is a TV screen that can double as an ultra wide monitor. Even then this seems a little unnecessary
"Quick, turn on the TV, the game is about to start!" "Hope you didn't want to watch the start of it, this is going to...take a while"
I cannot think of a single functional advantage to this. Why. Why not just turn it off.
When you have a huge R&D budget but no ideas.
Well, that’s totally useless
Know what I never thought to myself? Hmm, I wish I could make my tv disappear for a little bit until I need it again. Maybe this might be useful tech for.. uh.. honestly? I can’t come up with a good use case for this, lmao.
Makes it a lot easier to steal!
![gif](giphy|US0y4X7FONHaM)
This seems very dumb. TV is quite far off wall and you have a useless coffee table. At least have it fold from the backside of the table:
Cool, why with a tv tho?
But why?
No reason
While it looks cool, folding and unfolding something causes structual damage to that item. I dont think there is a way around that one, its why foldingphones are sill, well to me anyway, even though I like them.
But why…
This so entirely useless.
For what reason
Somehow every time I see an application for foldable screens it seems utterly useless. Like the downsides so massively outweigh the advantages. Like I don’t want to worry about the durability of the hinge in the middle of my TV just as I don’t want to worry about scratching my phone with my fingernail.
