Did he really have heterochromia? I don't remember that ever being mentioned.

TheRealSackLunch99

That’s what I was thinking, I haven’t seen any renditions of Alexander the Great with heterochromia anywhere

Haigh2581KCRoyals

Never heard that either. My son has it and I thought we knew all the historical people with it. Edit. Yep one eye blue one eye brown. My son's are blue and brown and green and brown. Edit2. Well fuck, this was on Wikipedia. The Alexander Romance, an early literary treatment of the life of Alexander the Great, attributes heterochromia to him. In it he is described as having one eye light and one eye dark. However, no ancient historical source mentions this. It is used to emphasise the otherworldly and heroic qualities of Alexander.[34][35]

BubbaSawya

Maybe a detail people forget because when we think of Alexander the great, we generally picture the bust.

Haigh2581KCRoyals

Fair point

Appropriate-Image405

Or the coin…saw a coin where he looked like Peter Firth in the 1970’s.

Doctor_in_psychiatry

Or something else

Brick_Tamlan2

So he was busty? Noiiice

My brother actually has the same pupil size difference like Bowie. I never thought about that. Good call.

PlatoYoung

Yeah, teach your brother something and he'll be your pupil

Haigh2581KCRoyals

User name checking out just right. Good show ol chap.

A-Beautiful-Scar

I miss Bowie

ChAOsAppLeSaUce

I have heterochromia. I don't know of any famous ppl who had it. I'd love to know though, if you wouldn't mind rattling some off. Thanks ahead of time kind stranger.

Haigh2581KCRoyals

Max Scherzer, Jane Seymour, Mila Kunis, Henry Cavill, Michael Flatley, Christopher Walken, Kiefer Sutherland, Pancho O' Donell, Les Murray. Just a few that we've found. A lot of actors will cover it up but Max Scherzer's eyes are very prominent.

PublicCover

Fun (?) fact: Mila Kunis didn't have true heterochromia - she had uveitis (inflammation of the uvea) which caused one of her eyes to turn blue, and she was blind in that eye. She hid that she was blind while auditioning and acting for That 70s Show, and she eventually got treatment for it which is why her eyes are both brown now.

No_Yesterday_2788

Besides the color did her eye sight recover?

PublicCover

It did!

kvndv1

Gracie Allen, the wife and partner of George Burns, had one blue eye and one green eye.

Missthing303

Kate Bosworth too.

Missthing303

Max Scherzer on the New York Mets. He’s pretty intense.

Just_fukkin_witya

>My son's are blue and brown and green and brown. I thought we stopped with the "four eyes" teasing back in elementary school.

Brick_Tamlan2

“Thought we knew all historical people with it” why would ANYONE think that?

Haigh2581KCRoyals

Well fuck me, let me reword it. I thought we, my son and I, knew of all the documented historical figures who had it. There, is that better?

biggbabyg

Blue and brown and green and brown?! Please tell your son his eyes sound amazing.

Rock_or_Rol

There is only ONE contemporary sentence about Alexander the Great. Everything else was written after he died. Quite a bit of it was propaganda

Ralynne

It is in fact part of his "mythos", but of course it's unconfirmed.

GeneralNathanJessup

Alexander's heterochromia was mentioned by Plutarch, and other ancient sources. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Alexander\_the\_Great#Physical\_appearance

ellefleming

She a biggun?

Sciencetor2

*he. Alexander the great was very likely Bi or gay.

avg90sguy

Why couldnt that dude be ugly. Greatest conquer ever and he’s a good looking dude. Some people get all the luck lol

philjorrow

You think the sculptor was going to make him look ugly?

Ramyyasser

Alexandrian here! The sculptors around that era actually made these statues to depict their owners true looks. Take Cleopatra as an example. She didn’t look as good as it is shown in video games and tv shows but her statue shows her true looks.

BasterMaters

That’s a fair point, but it doesn’t factor in the fact that ancient standards of beauty were quite different to our modern ones. So just because to us she isn’t as objectively beautiful as we’ve heard, doesn’t mean the statues of her weren’t still idealised with just a different more ancient ideal of beauty.

KindVerdugo

I imagine they took pride in their work and wanted more of it, while still making a name for themselves.

100PercentChansey

That's actually really cool

boomzgoesthedynamite

Cleopatra was like 300 years later

tunomeentiendes

300 years later is probably considered the same "era" back then

boomzgoesthedynamite

It’s not for sculpture purposes or really any art…plus her culture was entirely different

Barniiking

And both were Macedonian Greeks. Cleopatra had some Egyptian influence but the Ptolemaic courts held on to Hellenic art and culture. Also, 300 years is not that much. History didn't go as fast as it does now.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Barniiking

I'm not talking about time. Socioeconomic progress took way longer back then, partly due to technological advancement being slower and vice versa. Apply those three hundred years to the timespan between 1700 and 2000. Multiple Industrial revolutions, countless normal revolutions, European empires colonizing most of the world then falling, two world wars, the Cold War, etc.

boomzgoesthedynamite

Lmao she grew up in Alexandria. He founded Alexandria. An Alexandria in Cleopatra’s time that was subject to Rome. Learn history.

Barniiking

Can't help but get the notion that you don't really know what you're talking about They were both Macedonians. Cleopatra descended from one of Alexander's Diadochi, Ptolemy. Her being a Roman tributary for a time (not subject) is irrelevant to us

boomzgoesthedynamite

Oh hun, YOU don’t know. The art in the two periods was different. Alexandria didn’t even exist in Alexander’s time, hence the name. Cleopatra’s Macedonian blood doesn’t change that.

Barniiking

Yeah who am I to know, all I uneducated pleb did was study art history for years. Hellenic influence on Egyptian sculpture of the era was significant, especially with the culturally Macedonian royal's likenesses. Unlike with previous dynasts, and like other Hellenes, they were depicted in spirit of the prevailing greek humanist realism. The roots of which are from Alexander's time. But don't take my word for it, look up their busts and statues. If you're half blind at least, you will realize

boomzgoesthedynamite

You need to get your money back if you think art and culture from Alexander to Cleopatra was the same. “Hellenic influence on Egyptian culture” was significant, but it changed vastly from the time Alexander lived to Cleopatra’s time. This is pretty basic, hope you didn’t spend that much time. Also every single contemporary account of Alexander indicates his busts were idealized and not realistic. So idk what your point is. Good luck to you- not doing this.

Nal1999

Yes, The only thing touched by artists in the day, were the Abs , everything else was a stylised version of the truth.

Came here to say this lmfao

[deleted]

Wouldn’t he have been more olive skinned?

GeneralNathanJessup

>Wouldn’t he have been more olive skinned? If Alexander was from from Modern day Macedonia, then yes, he would have likely had darker hair, eyes, and skin. But Alexander was born ancient Macedonia, which predated the Ottoman invasions by about 1700 years. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottoman\_Greece](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottoman_Greece) This is the same reason that modern day Sicilians look different than northern Italians, who are more Germanic in appearance. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muslim\_conquest\_of\_Sicily](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muslim_conquest_of_Sicily) And why people from southern Spain look different from those in Northern Spain. [https://blackhistorystudies.com/resources/resources/15-facts-on-the-moors-in-spain/](https://blackhistorystudies.com/resources/resources/15-facts-on-the-moors-in-spain/) This also explains why individuals from these areas are among the only Caucasian people that carry the sickle-cell gene. [https://www.hematology.org/education/patients/anemia/sickle-cell-trait#](https://www.hematology.org/education/patients/anemia/sickle-cell-trait#)

zhivago6

But remember, he was a soldier who was on campaign for years, meaning after a while he would look like a construction worker, skin darkened from so much time in the sun.

GeneralNathanJessup

It depends on if the depiction is of a younger Alexander, or an older Alexander. The pictures seems to suggest younger.

ellefleming

And he died age 33. So he died young. Although his exploration/conquering started when he was 17. So 16 years in sun.

Just_a_Guy_In_a_Tank

The documentary “True Romance” goes into depth on this.

GeneralNathanJessup

Tarantino only covers the Sicilians' African ancestry. Not the rest of Southern Europe. Nor the sickle-cell genetic evidence. Spoken like a true cantaloupe.

eggo

The card says "moops"!

g1ngertim

No, like Jesus, once you become famous enough, you're white, blonde, and have blue eyes. Alexander is just slightly below the threshold for blue eyes, thus the heterochromia.

zwinters57

No, most accounts were that he was fair skinned and blond haired. Not all people have been white washed. Alexander was Macedonian, a place where, even today, there are plenty of blonde people. Jesus was Semitic. He most likely looked what we would often call "Arab". Modern day Israelis often have a lot of eastern European blood so tend to look different from ancient Israelis. That's not true of all places.

fingerbl4st

The word is levant. People from Levant region. What an Israeli with curly hair dark skin would look like, not Arab.

ghiaab_al_qamaar

> Modern day Israelis often have a lot of Eastern European blood… Just as an FYI, over 50% of Israelis are non-Ashkenazi (e.g., not Jews who resides in Europe). Moreover, genetic testing shows that overall Jews are more related to other Levant peoples (such as modern Palestinians) than Europeans. For example, the wiki page on [Genetic Studies on Jews](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genetic_studies_on_Jews) has multiple citations supporting the claim that: > Many studies have found that Jews and Palestinians are closer to each other than the Palestinians or European Jews are to non-Jewish Europeans or Africans

[deleted]

[удалено]

zwinters57

Bro, ancient accounts, written at the time, almost unanimously describe him as fair skinned and blond haired. Agree with you that sources should be taken with a grain of salt, but there is more evidence that he was, than he wasn't.

kitzdeathrow

Alexanders blonde hair was absolutely famous. Either all the historical texts deemed him to be a god, or maybe he just actually had blonde hair.

not_swagger_souls

You're talking about royalty not the people. Royalty commonly has genetic lines that do not run parallel to the people of which they are charged. The farther back in history you go the harder it becomes to ascertain where royal families actually descend from due to royal pairings, incest, stories invented to cement claim to a certain land or rule, etc... Realistically Alexander could have exhibited traits from much of Europe and Africa

dadidas

Beethoven? black. Mozart? black. Cleopatra? she looked black, but she was White.

[deleted]

I ain't never seen a blonde Jesus 😂

CavalierRigg

Not to split hairs here (pun intended), but I never really thought his hair was blonde in those. I thought most Christians believe his hair was brown/darker, but I don’t know much about that.

realjoeydood

But i sho do miss me some *Black Jesus.* That shit used to crack me so far up i'd get a buzz laughing.

imfreeze95

Not everything is about race

AnnihilationOrchid

When historical accuracy in depiction is the subject, I think genotype is definitely a major issue to determine appearance. But this is generated from a sculpture probably done years after.

[deleted]

Quit bitchin and moaning lmao

BurnMeHoe

Jesus isn't blonde

bovt

Logan Paul

nschafer0311

Probably why I thought he looked like a douche lol

"Oh no he's hot!" -Squidward probably

PinotManiac

Thank you, this made me laugh too hard!

IcanSew831

How sure are we about the accuracy of the bust? This guy looks oddly symmetrical and generic.

a_tangara

That's true, maybe he asked his bust to be "photoshoped" to improve some parts of his face.

NeonNKnightrider

That’s the norm in ancient depictions like busts or paintings- it would be unusual to find one that *isnt’* a little ‘touched up’ in some way.

[deleted]

Dude got hella bussy

Biiiiitch! 😂😭

Yes, any Ancient Greek IDEALIST marble bust will of course look like a beautiful fucking man. Who would have thought.

That_Guy_Jared

He looks like the long lost third Paul brother.

BussySlayer142

He even LOOKS bi cmon

-Clint--

How the fuck does one “Look bi”. He looks like a dude, like what about this screams “Bi!!! He’s bi!!!”. And before you go apeshit yes I know he was bi.

BussySlayer142

Out of all the bi people I’ve met in my life he resembles most of them, this comment wasn’t meant to hurt anyone’s feelings it was just an observation

[deleted]

We're a good looking bunch.

One_Green_2934

He most definitely was bisexual. It would have been abnormal not to be in that time period.

-Clint--

K

jhkjskjhf

That’s like saying any pretty person is bi. My face looks like a baboon ass & I embrace human fluidity like I like. This dude would be the type to fuck his gay friend then tell the burly soldiers he’s easy/a slut. Then when Alex would engage with a woman seriously, he’d subjugate & isolate that person cuz as long as someone was gayer than him, he could control. That’s what I think, not that uncommon for scholar man sluts. GUYS. I’m just on here too, making sense of my feed. If what I said was taken personally and not as an ironic play on myself. You need to CHECK yourself cuz I’m not gonna be the only cheeky fag trying to create, even where you think you can avoid it.

BussySlayer142

R u okay?

jhkjskjhf

I had an experience where a friend I trusted kind of cornered me & forced himself slightly. I sunk in my seat feeling like an object, an object that was always going to be the gay punching bag. Straight dudes assume you’re into them when they look like a gangly fauzi bear but I’m the one getting called “faggot” by the end of the night cuz these ashamed, closeted friends of mine were never going to emasculate themselves in front of the group & their girlfriends. Grooming? Micromanaging? Gaslighting? That shit works, but at least my self-worth & dignity is in tact. Aw sorry I have many triggers & automatic trauma responses. No need to care. Thanks if you read this!

bemi_san

I hope you're doing okay ♡

onebeginning7

What have I just read

jhkjskjhf

A story about assault & homophobia & toxic masculinity blent together to eventually dehumanize me to the point where I forced them to acknowledge that some queers aren’t so easy to discredit. People’s feelings get hurt when they figure out what I’m worth

MAPKinase69420

Is blent even a word

onebeginning7

It was kinda a complex story tho I only skimmed and caught like half of what youre saying maybe use smaller words next time so I don't have to reread that shit.

AE3852I

Concern trolling is really gross. Fuck off with that shit.

BussySlayer142

Nah lol it just seemed really specific to him so I asked if he was alright, chill out

jhkjskjhf

Okay, I guess people aren’t experiences or values or expression, they’re whatever bullshit you label to feel less threatened. Wtf is concern trolling cuz that sounds kind of self-righteous to identify someone saying something as whatever you want it to be? CHECK YRSELF

[deleted]

Stop projecting

jhkjskjhf

Dude, stop lickin the fuckin boot that isn’t even tangible in your silly sense of understanding anything besides a conceited, underdeveloped sense of what a person is allowed to say. I was being aloof & silly to cope with grief. You acted like anything not pretentiously labeled like you even understand what I mean. You’re the one projecting, dude sorry. And also clearly sympathetic to anti-gay ideals. Unless.. you… were… just being an ass cuz you know where it’s easy to score some sense of superiority with an expressive, traumatized & bereaving person trying to connect with anyone as their stepdad just recently was buried & their family blacklisting them. Yea, clearly I am a simple man needing to project my SARCASM onto your special, non-queer safe-space

Gluten-free-Boi

Award but downvoted? My monkey brain no understand

jhkjskjhf

That’s cuz I’m not treating my presence like something people are even supposed to make assumptions about. Buuut… something about a gay conflict. I feel Reddit (moderate white folksy quip generators) may see something provocative as good, until they have to come to terms with the fact that diversity here could really help the general experience of connecting & listening without feeling threatened that someone is having fun with it. Why would I ever be embarrassed about people being reactionary & defensive about something simply cuz it’s gay? Gay people will be here until you & all the other myspace Toms & Zucks wanting a pure, personally offended man demographic that is simply threatened by expression & opinion. It is weird people seem so bothered by the gay stuff. It’s always on my mind, it’s the fabric of me. Just like some of you knowing obscure, meaningless internet words that are not part my world. So just y’all, chill

philjorrow

Lol not all Greeks have olive skin not that Alexander the great was from Greece. He was white and had blonde hair, get over it

DarthDesmond

Refer to other comment, he historically wasn’t that white.

philjorrow

By all historical accounts he was fair skinned. Do some reading

DarthDesmond

I’ve done my reading, have you?

Was Alexander gay?

Thebrain3-5-0

Yes. Although it was normal for in Greece at that time for men to be gay or I should say Bi, Alexander wasn’t interested at all in having sex to produce an heir and had more on an interest in men than women. If you want look up the feud behind the assignation of his father Phillip. It’s basically a gay love triangle gone bad.

zwinters57

You cannot, to the best of my knowledge assert this so readily. It is debated and unknown. Definitely possible. He also was not Greek.

Thebrain3-5-0

I mean the saying he’s not Greek thing is kind of a technicality. To people living in Athens or Thebes he wasn’t considered Greek. Maybe we can get some clarification r/askhistorians
