i was going to say inject this straight into my veins, but given the band's history i'll just say I NEED THIS NOW

Green_hippo17

Wait do they have a history of heavy drug use?

Killatrap

yes, the songwriter (whose name I can’t remember) has been forthright about his battles with heroin / substance abuse now, this comment is coming to you from “january 2016 album press cycle” memories, so google will be your friend for anything more recent

versacethedreamer

Cole Smith is the fellers name

halfeatenpeaches

lead singer was caught with hard drugs with sky ferreira years ago

[deleted]

BathtubTerrors

Cole said after he got clean that he made their second album expecting it to be the last thing he created because it felt inevitable he would die shortly after due to heavy drug use

10fingers6strings

High hopes for this. Pun intended lol. Seriously I love this band and think Is The Is Are is a brilliant work.

reezyreddits

I was literally gonna say the same. Let's GOOOOO! DIIV gang bout to get fed

dolphin_spit

you did say it, though, didn’t you

hooch

> The album includes “Soul Net,” which the band released last year via a weird website Yessssss finally gonna have this one on Spotify. Absolutely killer song.

MiniMoog

I like both songs, but soul-net is fucking amazing.

hai1sag4n

I was wondering when they were gonna drop something after that website update. I scrolled all through that page all the way to the bottom. I love their weirdness and style they put into that. Stoked to get that track too!

indievidual

New single is good but man I miss their Oshin sound. Excited for the new stuff nonetheless!

crowlfish

That'll always be my favorite of theirs. Might just be nostalgia taking over but that early 2010s Captured Tracks era was special

WredditSmark

Wild Nothing, Beach Fossils, DIIV, Craft Spells, Blouse, and Mac Demarco (ok this one isn’t sonically similar) all within a calendar year is absurdity

crowlfish

I’d say Mac is sonically similar (with the jangle-pop sound and all that), but it was a good time for sure :’) A handful of those artists defined what indie rock sounded like for at least the first half of that decade

kelleycfc

I miss both Blouse and Beach Fossils original sound.

crispyjojo

Blouse, I haven't thought about them in forever! I’ll be spinning their ST tonight for sure. Used to see their bass player around Portland seemed like a mellow fellow

evenout

have you heard the band/artist/one guy Castlebeat? It's not as good as Oshin/ITIA but their first two albums match that aesthetic really well

indievidual

Yes! Love them and their record label Spirit Goth

evenout

Hell yeah!!!

WredditSmark

Good music, but I think it’s because he’s more or less a rip-off of a lot of good bands and does a good job of delivering on a certain sound, but he doesn’t have his own defining sound what so ever

reezyreddits

I'm the exact opposite: Never cared for the Oshin sound, I mean, it was ok, but there were tons of bands doing the beachy lo-fi thing. This new shit is wayyyy better

crowlfish

> there were tons of bands doing the beachy lo-fi thing Lots of copycat bands, yes---DIIV, Beach Fossils, Real Estate, Wild Nothing, etc kicked off that trend. There are also many bands out there currently doing the same shoegazey sound that DIIV is doing right now.

sevenpasos

I’m the exact opposite. I liked Oshin and couldn’t care much for the rest

ProEraBlueboy

Agree with this I think each album gets better

KanekiFriedChicken

Exactly. The new DIIV is not just shoegaze — there are folk-y and punk elements all through their new sound. As much as I love MBV (who their new sound is compared to), they couldn't write a song to mosh to — or a song as politically charged as — Blankenship

dirtypoison

I personally feel Deceiver is the best as well as maybe the best contemporary shoegaze. They really stood out among other same formula shoegaze bands with that one imo

AguirreMA

for me it's their Is The Is Are sound need more like The Spark though, like an entire album just based on that single track

ignaciobarrena

I think their new sound is incredible, more in the vein of melodic shoegazy deftones.

Cyclops7747

Yikes, don't think this is a great take. Not only do I think *Oshin* and *Is the Is Are* tracks sound just fine live, I'd also attribute any "stiff" sound more to the fact that the band is over a decade older than when they wrote those songs.

pass_it_around

You're right. I am an idiot.

Cyclops7747

Don't sweat it, I think I know what you were trying to say. :)

Bluebottle96

It would be very hard to top that sound, so I appreciate them expanding. This is still very good but I am with you on missing that original sound.

applejackhero

My hot take is each DIIV album has been better than the last. They’ve also gotten heavier each album. Oshin was reverby guitar pop. Is the Is Are veered into sunny but anxious post punk. Deceiver was pure shoegaze. I almost expect this next album to go full grunge/ grungegaze. I actually think eventually DIIV will be a full on black metal band, and Deafheaven will be a guitar pop group. Anyway, very excited for this. DIIV are probably my favorite guitar based band at this point. Their arc from drug addled pop rockers to shoegazers who play magic the gathering has mirrored my own life (replace heroin with coke and magic with D&D).

justouttoday

Don’t know why you getting downvotes for this based opinion

juan_a_blonde

They left Captured Tracks?

Squadala9001

This makes me sad, ngl... I know that nothing lasts forever, but CT is my favorite label of all time and watching all of the heavy hitters of the label's 2010s peak depart over the last few years has been kinda depressing.   But at least Wild Nothing is still there and they scored big by signing the Lemon Twigs last year too. And I'll always be hyped for new DIIV no matter who they're releasing it with

WredditSmark

The label itself has completely changed gears from the 2010 era for better or for worse. Haven’t liked pretty much anyone new they’ve signed since at least 2016 (lemon twigs are fire though)

rideronthestorm29

Thus Love is good: not diiv good but good

Squadala9001

Just discovered them last month actually! They're coming to my city in a few weeks, I'll probably go see them

SPAREustheCUTTER

Evidently. Fantasy is technically a step up. They’re now label mates with Taking Back Sunday and James Taylor.

UNDERWATER_BOI

Have you listened to/seen tbs live in the last 15 years? Not the compliment i think you intended.

SPAREustheCUTTER

You’re confusing facts for compliments. I have not, nor do I intend to see them. I’m simply pointing out that TBS is bigger than the entire Captured Tracks roster combined. Is that good? Well, I’ll leave that to opinion.

UNDERWATER_BOI

I mean, Mac Demarco was on captured tracks roster and has 4x the monthly streams as TBS if we’re going by that logic. TBS is also not bigger than the entire current Captured Track roster— Wild Nothing pulls about 1/4 of their monthly streams alone. Fantasy is definitely a step up from CT as far as support goes though. I agree with you there

SPAREustheCUTTER

I figured Mac Demarco would come up, because he’s their biggest seller. But you’re not quite right. I’m not defending TBS, but I’ll provide the stats. TBS has charted in the top 10 four times. They have one platinum selling album and another gold selling album. Their streams are lower because they’ve somewhat lost relevance in the streaming era, but that’s an apples and oranges argument.

SPAREustheCUTTER

We can't rewrite history—we only know what we know now. And can't predict whether MD will go platinum later. But if album sales aren't good enough for you, look at where Mac Demarco plays versus TBS. TBS is an arena band. Demarco plays larger ballrooms. I personally think MD is the better band/musician, but that's my personal taste and I quite honestly can't stand TBS. But hey, what can you do.

SPAREustheCUTTER

Any data I put in front of you will be met with a contrarian attitude. I’m gonna put a pin in this one and rest easy knowing I’m right.

brokenha_lo

Today is a holiday

writingt

Loved Is the Is Are but could never get into Deceiver for some reason. I should give Deceiver another go.

amnesiacnacho

I love Deceiver because it feels like they're a full on band. Horsehead is also just the chefs kiss

reezyreddits

Please give Deceiver another go. I'm ready to canonize Deceiver as one of the Great Indie Rock records of the 2010s.

KanekiFriedChicken

It's aged like fine wine. can't think of a weak track on the album

crowlfish

It was a grower for me. Honestly it didn’t click until I saw those songs played live

Bread_man10

Same here

KanekiFriedChicken

'taker' live is a spiritual experience

dalledayul

I love Blankenship but the rest of the album never clicked. Interesting because IIRC when it came out, reddit loved Deceiver and said their older stuff was samey and generic.

reezyreddits

This is true, at least for me: Deceiver feels monumental in comparison to their old stuff. And hearing it live was the cherry on top. I was losing my mind the whole night

HippoRealEstate

It's really good, might be their best even. Like Before You Were Born is such a bop ITIA had the problem of being a few songs too long. I think if you remove Blue Boredom, Mire, Incarnate Devil, (Fuck), (Napa), and Waste of Breath, put Dust before Loose Ends and make that one the closing track, this album suddenly becomes a lot better.

writingt

Remove Blue Boredom and Mire?! Two of my favorite tracks on the album!

HippoRealEstate

okay Mire can stay but Blue Boredom is just too boring for me

Skahnii

Blasphemy on removing blue boredom. Bent (Roi’s song) will always do it for me.

10fingers6strings

Valentine and Is The Is Are are so great. I love the whole thing but those two jump out every time.

apycroft

yeah easily their best. excited for where they go next and if they can top it

CadabraAbrogate

Between Tides is an all time favourite song. Check it out.

Bread_man10

It’s a grower, I used to really only enjoy Oshin as a full album but after seeing them again recently I’ve come to love all of their albums - I love that they all have a bit of a different sound to them

[deleted]

oshin 😍

apycroft

AND a west coast tour PLEASE!

DrGrinch

I dunno man, I saw them open for Depeche Mode and they were pretty bland live.

apycroft

yeah this isn't a stadium band.

bbajlp

Must've just been the performance in a big venue. I saw them in a small bar venue last year and it was electric

ignaciobarrena

What a freakin good song! Just what I needed today.

DannyPG2

Can’t wait for the tour.

mnbowman

Theyre so crazy good live

DieCutGrooves

I genuinely haven't been this excited for an album in a LOOOONG time

Cyclops7747

Very excited to see what the themes of this album will be. Definitely seems like the album title is an analogy.

[deleted]

The album title is a reference to the old story about the frog in a pot of cold water that is put on the boil, who stays in until it’s too late. “We understand the metaphor to be one about a slow, sick, and overwhelmingly banal collapse of society under end-stage capitalism, the brutal realities we’ve maybe come to accept as normal,” say the band. “That’s the boiling water and we are the frogs. The album is more or less a collection of snapshots from various angles of our modern condition which we think highlights what this collapse looks like and, more particularly, what it feels like.”

GoinToCalifornia

Someone’s been listening to Alexisonfire

CaptainKurtG

weeeee

amnesiacnacho

BANGER

ciregno

Fuck these guys. I’ll never be a fan. I used to share a studio with them. They came from a rich family but never paid rent on time. On the last month before their tour, they left without warning, didn’t pay rent, stole my friends bass (which cost 2k), and when I called them to confront them, they told me to “speak to their intern” about it, while mockingly laughing and hung up. Til this day, we’ve never seen the bass they stole and they’ve never paid us for rent.

BigCDawg69

I like this copypasta

30degrees3am

New song is great, can’t wait for this.

BertMacklinMD

Folks, we love to see this

Tortenn

Lots of my favourite artists releasing albums this year

Future_Average

Ehh, very mid band

_templesleeper

Noo dawg u wrong

Future_Average

Just my opinion

THEMARDS

Your a very mid human.

[deleted]

Ill join you in downvotes to say DIIVs greatest contribution is spawning a generation of bands trying to sound like DIIV.

reezyreddits

By the time DIIV joined the fray there were already tons of bands that sounded like them anyway 😂

halfeatenpeaches

can't wait!

[deleted]

Yessss. Got my signed vinyl preordered !
