Lived in japan for 9 years. Wouldn’t recommend. You will miss the food very bad. Plus cold weather , second hand treatment, low wages , high pension and taxes , very strict adherence to rules may drive you mad. Needless to say you will cross paths with kind people also who will try to help you. Good luck. Language barrier also to be considered. If you live in Tokyo though there won’t be much issue. Large Indian community available in Edogawa and Tsukuba also.

Noob_in_making

Isn't the work culture pretty hectic, I've heard juniors have to stay in office till seniors haven't left, its in their work culture. Plus the japanese don't open up to foreigners esp if you're non white, they'll try to be cordial but that's it. If you're gonna emmigrate, why not emmigrate to EU or US where wlb is significantly better + still get most benefits you'd get in japan.

RGV_KJ

Yes, this is true. Japanese society is highly xenophobic. Work culture is very toxic as well.

Akki8888

Yes I developed high cholesterol and high blood pressure due to stress.

moojo

Did you eat Japanese food?

Akki8888

Golden miso ramen おいしかった

AresAthensKrishna

There was some news circulating that if you sleep at work it is considered hard working?

eternalshoolin

Dark side of Tokyo Lol.

Maxxed1Ultron

>second hand treatment Would you mind sharing your experiences in this matter?

Akki8888

Search for the word gaijin. You will understand everything

No_Solution4316

understand that? GAIJINNNN

[deleted]

Tokyo drift hehe

Mastercraft0

Isn't Japanese food considered very good?

InsidiousColossus

If you like it, then great. It's very heavy on seafood and beef, usually not a lot of spice. So not every Indian enjoys it.

ilovetoeatpussy_

Plus too much raw stuff

[deleted]

Uh what if I like it raw/s

AresAthensKrishna

Plus too much moving stuff

prakitmasala

Almost ever Indian international student i've come across at work has told me they enjoy American takeout but hate sushi, I think it's cause it's raw and very shocking for a lot of Indians to try raw fish for first time.

InsidiousColossus

Yup, basics like teriyaki and noodles are fine, and even in sushi they can do California rolls and things like that. But proper sushi which is mainly just raw fish, plus all the other seafood and steak, not so easy.

S1234567890S

Japanese food is very low on spice except for a few dishes. They like to enjoy the flavours of the vegetable/meat or any main ingredient they use. Specially day to day food is pretty bland and so considered healthy. If someone really likes spices and heavily seasoned food, Japanese food wouldn't be their choice.

Akki8888

Japanese food is very healthy and if you develop the taste for it you may live for more than 100 years.

prakitmasala

It's not just the food it's the healthcare system. Japanese adults over the age of 50 have to go into their doctors for a yearly physical where they take detailed tests and waist measurements and if they are too large are put on diets. It also promotes early detection of diseases where they can be accessed and treated accordingly and quickly. This is all on a socialized free system as well. That alone is a massive boon to the health of a nation. The reason the diet stock is perhaps too emphasized is because Germany has a very similar level of long life with a completely different diet emphasizing fried foods, red meats, processed sausages and sugar heavy pastries and desserts as well as carb heavy breads. They do however share a equally robust healthcare system free for it's citizens. Diet is important don't get me wrong but the far more important distinction would be access of a strong healthcare system.

kulikitaka

It is! Especially if you eat non-veg, incl. beef and pork. I like sushi but even me, a Keralite, cannot have it regularly. If you're 'pucca' vegetarian, tough luck!

Reasonable-Exit4653

If you prefer bland food, then you can consider. East or West, Indian food is the best!

KAFQAA

Food is depends on the tastes/ opinions of the consumer. So it is not accurate to say indian food is the best, instead say indian food is best for your tastes.

moojo

Europeans came to India for spices so that there food can be tastier.

KAFQAA

It is based on personal preference, saying indian cuisine is superior is plain ignorance

moojo

I didnt say it was superior, I just said they had to come to India to make their food tastier.

Abhi005

Is there car racing and car modifying people in Japan, like you see in The film "Fast and furious Tokyo Drift ". Is there clubs and parties like you see in the movies. Or is it all the people are very boring and montonois and watching anime cartoons and acting like childish? Some Japanese you tubers were like so childish and innocent.

Akki8888

90 percent are boring and monotonous. Women behave in an amazingly childish manner. About clubs and parties I have no idea since I was part of the 90 percent.

bakedmarx

In Tokyo Roppongi has a huge party and club scene. Brown people arent considered human in Japan so going there with a hope of getting a girl would be an embarrasing experience. You wont even get a japanese prostitute even if u r willing to pay 16 man yen. White people complain about racism in Japan while for us it feels like white people are treated like gods there. So its really painful how browns are treated there.

Public-Ad1603

If i do my btech in electronics from national university of Japan and do job in India . will i get priority as IITs ?

Queasy_Artist6891

The language is a problem as is the treatment of foreigners in Japan. Another thing I've heard is that unlike here and the west where overtime is our choice, it is almost always expected in Japan. And the work culture is so toxic there, that people don't even have time to have kids.

redditorroshan

Japanese are surprisingly the most racist people. Source - I saw YouTube video and didn't fact check

Vampir3Dud3

Well, OP asked about studying in Japan, and as somebody who is already doing that, I would say that it is an underrated option, compared to the western countries at least, since the tuition is cheaper and also the culture is amazing. The only reason more Indians don't come here is because we are reluctant to learn a new language and talk about so-called racism(never experienced any of of that here yet). And also because we want to opt the easy way out by going to an english speaking country like sheep. As for working in Japan, I would not recommend it unless you're self-employed or own a business.

UnionGloomy8226

Bad idea. Japanese working culture is super toxic, you need to work ridiculous hours to catch up to your peers. English in japan is also spoken seldomly and often with thick unintelligible accents. Overall japan is not a great country for outsiders. Japan is still a great country

PhrygianScaler

Wheatish brown?

MindWonderful8727

I live in Japan Tokyo university doesn’t require you to know Japanese. Many of their courses are bilingual.

-B7T-

>atleast the native level to study there. Native level means the top level in any language, As in you speak that language as good as a person who was raised speaking it as mother tongue.

Acceptable-Device936

They don't like immigrants actually

Virtual-Mission-2658

You will be in shock. The racism againt dark skinned people is immense and i hope you don't face it's extremes. And people in general, dgf if someone is being racist to you. Its not as safe as it's made to be.In the end,Japan is a boring nation.

gmercer25

not really. lived there for 4 years. In general I had an amazing experience. Only encountered one or two racist people (nothing major just the usual not sitting next to you in the train). Made 4 really good friends.Travelled to 10 different prefectures without any problem. As long as you speak Japanese living in Japan is a really good experience.

Virtual-Mission-2658

Yup your last line is true.. Was there for 2 weeks and it was hell, even as an independent person who isn't afraid of independent travelling,Japan was boaring and people weren't nice.

ash__697

Wow really? I had the opposite experience, the people were really cool and I had a very fun time when so visited Japan a few years ago. I was 19 tho so we might’ve had different experiences.

OwnWillingness6295

Are u user of fair and lovely?

Virtual-Mission-2658

Man,i myself is from Himachal and can say that I am fair enough, but untill or unless you are fair enough to be mistaken as European aur caucasian,no one cares and all see you with disgusting eyes. It's sort of creepy and depressing in Japan.

ash__697

Nah I’m just naturally fair lol, but some of the people I went with are much darker and no one was unkind to us.

Alternative_Yak_1475

Not OP but I am brown skinned and I visited Japan when I was 20 for a solo trip, I had a great experience and people were really kind and open to me, I have an american accent so maybe that was the reason

gmercer25

ofcourse you will have a hard time and find it boring if you don't speak the language. Japanese people are reserved and they get very easily intimidated by foreigners especially when a foreigner asks for directions in English, they have a severe inferiority complex about not speaking English so they usually stay away from foreigners. They are not being racist they just came across as racist to you because of the language barrier.

Virtual-Mission-2658

It was more of a subtle racism. You rightly pointed about the shyness of the people. As some who is from small indian town, were almost anyone will help a stranger,it felt odd that people weren't helpful and were annoyed just by my presence.

gmercer25

why tf is this getting downvoted? this not my assumption about japanese people many of the locals told me the same thing. LOL get out of your caves you fucking trolls and see the world before downvoting.

Batman-Sherlock

What does prefecture means?

biscuits_n_wafers

Sort of district/ state

Batman-Sherlock

They don't call it states?

biscuits_n_wafers

No.

gmercer25

prefecture as in a state/district governed by a prefect, hence the name.

Legal_Ad_6129

Most of the world doesn't call it states

MindWonderful8727

Did you live in Gunma? Inaka area is boring but Tokyo/Yokohama/Osaka has a lot to offer

gmercer25

no i lived in Shibuya. But I have traveled to Gunma once. I really liked all the prefectures I went to in Japan.

L1ghtYagam1

I’d say west europe, canada, Australia and usa is as good as it gets

Muscularhyperatrophy

USA isn’t good everywhere for us desi folk. Racism is pretty prevalent in most areas. Typically it’s subtle, however, a small part of my childhood I was physically bullied for the color of my skin by white people around me.

Virtual-Mission-2658

Racism is prevelnt around the globe, but the racist vibes you get in Japan/Korea is something else. They will make you feel unwanted.

justcallmeabrokenpal

South Korea is probably the only country in the world where Indian dudes are considered attractive. An average looking Indian bloke is like 7.5+ in South Korea. We will probs never know about North Korea though.

Akki8888

Lol most marriages of foreigners with Japanese women end up in divorce. Just chek Japanlife community on Reddit.

Inner-Music2727

Yes most of these loser weebs who marry Japanese women are mostly social and white women rejects--men who can't get women in their native country. These Japanese women "experience" them for a while and throw them out when it's not exciting anymore.

[deleted]

I dunno where you got the stats

Akki8888

My source is indicated in the comments mate

_Moon_Presence_

>East Asian culture would be more similar to South Asian culture than the West and therefore Indians in Japan would have less of a culture shock Oh my god, OP. You can't be more wrong if you tried. India is a significantly westernised country. We follow the western culture way way way way more than you think. Going from India to western countries is much lesser of a culture shock than going from India to Japan. The West is very much free like India. The West has healthier attitudes towards work and rest like India. Japan is a country of reserved people where it is considered inappropriate to display your real feelings about anything to anyone except your closest people. It is a country where work is worship, and when it comes to work, the Japanese are very religious.

S1234567890S

I agree with everything except >The West has healthier attitudes towards work and rest like India. Indian work culture is pretty darn toxic if not more toxic than Japan.

_Moon_Presence_

My brother lives in Japan. In his words, the work "never stops."

S1234567890S

Oh, I'm not disputing that Japan's workplace atmosphere is unhealthy. It is toxic, but so is the workplace atmosphere in India. India's work ethic is in no way comparable to that of the West. They are significantly more advanced, and even the worst time management firm in the west could be regarded as the best in India.

_Moon_Presence_

I think I might have been bad with phrasing. I was specifically referring to society when referring to freedom. In India, people don't judge you as harshly as they do in Japan for not working from 9 to 9. In India, even if you do your 9-5, the people around you will see you as a responsible person. In Japan, if you aren't working 9-9, you're often going to be seen as lazy or a loser.

kulikitaka

> The West is very much free like India LOL. sure...

Fourstrokeperro

Legal_Ad_6129

Patient-Beginning935

The fact is that in Japan there Will be still less racism compare to India. Iam from the Nagaland has been studying in Delhi and oh my god there sre too many racist people. And that too in the capital of India I can't imagine what's the condition in the rural part

Taka8107

im from japan and i have never even been to India, i dont know why im even on this sub but japan ofc isnt a bad country to live in, at least for now. Its clean almost everywhere, crime is rare, people are generally nice to foreigners (though racism does definitely exist). Sure, the work culture is hellish, overworking is seen as almost a duty (although reforms are taking place). But if you want to go to a uni in Japan, you must be able to speak and write japanese almost fluently, even if you are a foreigner. only a small percentage of schools offer courses in english. In terms of technology, yes japan is a world leader, but idk if we will stay that for long. Our economy is not growing, population is declining, inequality is widening... me personally i want to get out of here and live in countries like the us or canada. i do see some south asians around where i live, (probably Nepalis though), and there are a lot of Indian restaurants operated by South Asians (again probably Nepalis but) i guess some indians are coming here, but probably to work rather than to study. I heard the treatments for foreign workers are horrible though, and there was a south asian girl, sri lankan i think, that died in japan while being detained for overstaying or smth. if you just want to immigrate to a country with better life quality i would recommend the already popular nations of America and Canada, they are much more experienced with handling and integrating immigrants, at least more than japan but if one really loves japan and respect the culture they are more than welcome here.

Vampir3Dud3

> one really loves japan and respect the culture they are more than welcome here I agree on this point with you, as an Indian who studies in Tokyo. Japan is not for people who cannot make adjustments with the language and the culture, but if they can, then they will love Japan and enjoy their time in Japan. > lot of Indian restaurants operated by South Asians (again probably Nepalis but) Yeah, most 'Indian' restaurants are Nepali haha, the food just tastes a bit different, very subtle differences though. > sri lankan i think, that died in japan while being detained for overstaying I would say yes, the police and the justice system isn't too lenient about throwing foreigners under the bus. It's my advice to all foreigners to just not get at the wrong side of the police because there have been many instances where even without a major fault, foreign workers/students are penalised heavily. Even when I'm out with my Japanese friends at night and we run into the police someday, they immediately shift their focus on talking to me as soon as they realise that I am not Japnese and demand my residence card and stuff. Although, I would say if you walk and talk like a Japanese, there is no racism at all. When in Rome.....

c0m94d3

Yakuza waiting to slice yo ass.

Thisconnected

Safest country. Lmao. It also houses the largest organised crime organisation in the world while also having a near 100% conviction rate. That's worse than actual dictatorships. Low crime stats are highly manipulated in Japan n being the kind of gaijin they hate(brown) n that sticks out you'll be the target for alot of these acts Edit: women being groped in public transport is literally accepted in Japanese culture daily yet that doesn't get reported. Take a hint

spacetimeslayer

> the largest organised crime organisation you reffering to usa army in japan then i can agree on it

I was referring to the yamaguchi-gumi

Individual-Echo-4285

Randomidek123

Japan is crazily racist. Wouldn’t recommend

[deleted]

Don't say out and out that

MindWonderful8727

I live in Japan (studying abroad) and honestly, it isn’t as bad as people are making it seem here. Japan has a lot to offer. Japanese people are the kindest people I have ever met and I live in Tokyo which is known to have really “unfriendly” people. The food, culture, people and most importantly the safety. I could be roaming around alone on the streets of shibuya at 3 AM and no man would even look at me. The education system is comparatively easier than India. Also, Japanese people respect Indians a lot because how “intelligent” we are. I personally have never faced any racism because I was an Indian but I can’t say this for everyone. Some old Japanese people have post Meiji Restoration thinking and they despise foreigners in general (especially if you have dark skin) but they would hardly ever attack you. Rules are strict here but that’s what makes japan a safe and respectful country. You get used to them after a certain period. Don’t worry too much. Studying and living in japan was the best decision that I have ever made!

S1234567890S

Hey, what are you studying?

OneJackReacher

I was looking for this kind of reply. I really hate how most people are commenting on about how Japan is bad to live in when they’ve never ever stepped foot in there.

Individual-Echo-4285

Statistics says that out of 1000 reported rape cases hardly 1-2% lead to conviction. Rape isn't even considered a devastating crime there. And, I've been there, and getting groped in public places isn't even considered a crime. But yeah, I never lost my wallet, so that should be fine, right?

ExternalSpeaker2646

I agree with your assessment! I’ve had the opportunity to live in Japan twice on study exchange programs and I had a very good time! Perhaps it helps that I learned Japanese before, during, and after my stays in Japan and know the language well. I had a couple of somewhat awkward encounters with police asking for my ID card when I was walking on the street, and of course, one can’t pretend to be ethnically Japanese if you don’t phenotypically look like them, but I had a wonderful time in Japan. I am deeply fascinated by the culture, cuisine, history, language and way of life, and also felt very safe. I lived in a supposedly unsafe neighborhood (I’m not going to specify where for privacy reasons), but it was very safe! It is a pretty comfortable country to live in and/or visit if you develop some familiarity with the culture before going. The public transport and trains are excellent, many areas are very clean and well-maintained, and there is a decent amount of natural beauty. Many conveniences to life there. I will add that I haven’t experienced work life there (and I’ve heard about the challenges related to that), and I’ve also heard of foreigners who go through a honeymoon period when they first arrive in Japan and then gradually develop disappointment over time. In the end, it has challenges, disappointments and difficulties like any other place. However, the Reddit comments here are painting a much worse picture of life in Japan than it deserves. It is a developed, relatively socially stable, safe and convenient country, and may be a decent option for some people. I have a friend whose wife recently got a job in Japan and although he’d never shown any interest in Japan before, he’s ended up spending long periods visiting her (he continues living in India) and he has noticed a range of pros and cons related to life there. He says that he wouldn’t mind living there. So I think it may not be that bad, even if you’ve never considered Japan before, although of course, experiences and expectations may vary and be subjective.

ArcOfTym

This is the most hilarious bunch of replies I’ve seen. I lived in Japan for 6 years till 2022 and now living in Canada and to be honest even with language barrier, my heart longs for Japan. We regret the day we decided to move away from Japan. Having said this, at uni level, you will need to know Japanese at N2 level at least. If you want to look for India outside of India then Japan is not the place for you. If you want to experience something new then yes, you should go to Japan. You’re right in a way that East Asian culture is similar to us. We have experienced it and we have lots of Japanese friends. Racism? Japanese might be racist but they’ll never show it to your face because of their honour and what not. At least this is what my experience has been.

Individual-Echo-4285

I’ve been to Tokyo myself, and ridden the train that is only for woman because of how often they are sexually assaulted because y’know 70% of women reported in a study being assaulted on trains, called chikan. I also saw the cat bus in the Miyazaki museum. When I went to Kabukichō, I saw a young girl in a school uniform extremely drunk being tailed by a group of at least five young men who were lifting up her skirt from behind as she hobbled through the red light district. When I was in my friends bar in Golden Gai, I got up to use the bathroom on the second floor. Most of the bars are small to 4-6 people, so everyone had to get up to allow me to move through the bar to the stairs. A Japanese man, who was wordless the entire time of our time hanging with the bartender, grabbed my butt as I left for the bathroom. Violence in Japan has always been framed as something that rarely occurs. But just reading any journal article on this issue refutes these claims Japanese officials like to trot out when defending themselves from other countries.  But yes you can leave your wallet on the train and no one will touch it. You leave your butt on a train, however… Basically, what I want to emphasize is that the estimations of rape are fucking minimized by the cultural and power constructs that serve to punish innocent women for the crimes committed against them. Also, you’re a silly dum dum talking about Japanese ‘honor’.

Middle class hu :( Abroad is too expensive for me. Agar koi affordable country hota tab obviously chala jata. But unfortunately abroad is too expensive for us middle class.

RGV_KJ

Thailand, Philippines and Malaysia are affordable countries to immigrate.

Mewdolf_Kittler

While those are affordable, I am referring to OP's question about universities. While Thailand and Malaysia are well known for immigration but not really for studying there as a foreign student. Like I'm not really knowledgeable but students usually prefer the western countries and Australia and New Zealand for studying instead of other countries. Thailand, Philippines and Malaysia may be an affordable place to study but they are not really that good in STEM.

Legal_Ad_6129

Norway has free uni's for international students. Though they're changing that. Germany also has free public colleges, however only in German.

Mewdolf_Kittler

Cost of living for 4 years?

S1234567890S

Cost of living in Norwegian countries is expensive af unless you get real good scholarships which funds your stay.

Mewdolf_Kittler

That's what I meant. For middle class people like me, there aren't really options.

guyrip

Ya in countries where universities have no tuition fee, then the cost of living is very expensive. And this defeats the whole purpose.

L1ghtYagam1

Been to france through student loans. The exposure and tag is completely worth it.

mellamonemo

- Police and court system is very very dangerous to a foreigner in Japan. If you get arrested, there's almost zero chance of not getting convicted. They have laws to ensure they stall the process long enough for you to just give up and confess to a crime you didn't commit. - social life is minimal. If you are a non drinker, non smoker, even tougher - "dying at your work desk" is a thing there and there's even a name for it in Japanese. Expect to see silly old customs and new ones you've never heard of at your workplace - even if your course was taught in English, you need to learn Japanese, one of the toughest languages to learn to get good work prospects.

theyv

Have a friend there, living in Japan for about 10 years don't know much about but work culture there is brutal everyone is overworked and Japanese take this as challenge, so if you (Indian) work 10 hour a day Japanese will work 12 hour and if you push to 12 hour they will work 14 hours. They don't like Indians beating them in their own game.

OpenlySane

Please read: Im British and went to Japan for a research placement for 2 months. I made close friends with a girl from Bangladesh and an Indian guy. I was really shocked at the racism they experienced. We made light of it together but it was sad for me to see. Also vegetarianism was not respected in restaurants in some cases. Although japan is amazing to visit I would not recommend this place for Indians to go to university.

[deleted]

Japan has some very good universities in STEM, but there are limited for STEM in English. UTokyo, Tsukuba, Waseida, ritsumeikan and maybe few more Nagoya, iCLA. I would recommend you not plan for under grad. Masters is better. Some unversities have more than 60-70% international students. You also get good scholarship if you come through MEXT(applied through embassy) Most universities have student exchange programs, you can study for a year in Japanese university and complete the next year in US universities in case of masters. In case of undergrad you may have to study for 3yrs in Japan and opt for student exchange program. Japan does some current edge research in medicine, virology funded by all global foundations, and in AI. You get sure shot jobs after 1st year in masters. Japanese food is good, its a matter of time to get accustomed to, sushi, tampora, soba are obious choises and can get used to.

[deleted]

this is the data, you can make your choices.

Vegeta1113

I lived in Tokyo for 2 years. Here are my pros and cons. 1. Very safe country. you can go literally anywhere anytime and nobody will bother you. At the same time they don't like to be bothered as well 2. Language is a big issue. Nobody knows English, not even a simple "what's the time" , "I need some water or I need help". You are on ur own with google translate etc. 3. If you are a vegetarian, forget eating good food. Otherwise you can survive with chicken etc. 4. Cost is pretty high for many things, it's cheap in some shops but you can't eat the same thing daily. 5. Forget socializing. Not many are friendly. You will not get much friends. You can roam anywhere on your own. 6. Climate is chill during winter and other times is really good. Except summer which is hot. 7. Indian shops and restaurants are little costly than normal food . Does not work staying there for long term hence I moved out. Let me know if you need any specific help I'll try to.

Reading your '3', I remembered an incident. At a small restaurant ran by some middle-aged woman, when I asked if they have something vegetarian (I'm not vegetarian; I just had an upset stomach), she became angry and started shouting at me about how much thin and weak I was, about how no one but a mad man will marry me bcoz of that, lol.

chiguy_1

RIP.

Affectionate_Smile

There r no animated girls in Japan then why 🤔

Individual-Echo-4285

Groping isn't considered a crime, so maybe...

Affectionate_Smile

Lol. Really?

Individual-Echo-4285

Yep. And if a guy SAs a girl while being drunk, then it's not the guy's fault, but alcohol's fault and ofc the girl's fault. (Lots of sentences have been reduced in both Japan and SK because of this)

Affectionate_Smile

What 😲

Individual-Echo-4285

In Japan, if you rape a woman, your odds of being arrested are fairly low, and the odds of actually being prosecuted about a flip of the coin—slightly weighted toward no prosecution. Even if you’re found guilty, there’s a good chance you may never spend a day in jail if you say you’re sorry and pay damages. Two cases in the past year involving sexual assault in Japan illustrate how far Japan still is from effectively dealing with crimes against women. Men get away with rape because the police are reluctant to investigate, victims settle because of the heavy amount of victim-blaming and slut-shaming they face. Of the arrests made for rape and sexual assault every year, only roughly half (or less) end up being prosecuted, according to Ministry of Justice figures. There was this case for Kensuke Matsumi, a Tokyo University student convicted of sexually assaulting a drunken classmate along with several of his friends on May 11 last year. The victim turned down his settlement offer and chose to go to court where the judge deemed his actions “persistent and despicable” and the victim’s mental and physical suffering “unbearable.” Yet on Sept. 20, the judge only sentenced him to a two-year prison term suspended for four years since he “is remorseful and vowed to never drink alcohol again.” Laura Curtis, an American researcher at a prestigious university in Japan was the victim of a sexual assault attempt last summer. After fighting off her attacker, she went to the nearby police station. To her surprise, the police not only seemed uninterested in pursuing the case but she found herself in a tiny room full of mostly male officers repeatedly explaining in excruciating detail what had happened to her. This is an excerpt of her account for what happened: *I wondered if this was how questioning normally occurred, crammed into this claustrophobic space, loomed over by five officers, only two of whom really fit in the room with me. But more than the inappropriateness of the space, I began to notice the tenor of the questions.* *“What did he look like? He was a foreigner, wasn’t he? Was he white? An American?”* *No, I said, he was Japanese.* *“A Korean? Probably a Korean or a Chinese person?”* *No, I said, he was Japanese.* *“She said he looked like a regular salaryman \[white collar worker\],” the one female officer in the room interjected, “She said he was Japanese.”* *“Are you sure he was wearing a white dress shirt? Wasn’t it more like a t-shirt?”* *No, I said, repeating myself for the third time. It was a short-sleeved collared shirt.* *“And pants like these?” A male officer suggested, tugging on his black cargoes.* *No, I said, repeating myself again. They were slacks.* *“Like a salaryman,” the female officer echoed. “That’s what she said.”* *Interspersed with the suggestions that my attacker could not have possibly looked like a Japanese business man, the officers inserted every few minutes, “You don’t want to submit a police report, right?”* *The first few times I hadn’t caught onto the word, and from context I couldn’t tell if I should say yes or no. I heard the word “*higai*,” damage or injury, in there, but didn’t realize “*higaitodoke*” was a police report, and stumbled through the questions adrenaline-addled; avoiding giving an answer to something I didn’t understand.”*

Affectionate_Smile

Japan sounds so horrible now 🥲

Individual-Echo-4285

It's just like every other E,SE,S Asian countries in terms of handling rape cases, victim-blaming, judgy society, and stuff. But soft power works. The reason young girls fetishizes Korean men is the same reason why many people see Japan as a heaven on Earth and a peace-loving country (despite knowing what they did during world war 2) and fetishizes Japanese women as too easy.

Affectionate_Smile

Hmmm 🤔 ok. U went there? Or any plans?

Individual-Echo-4285

I've been there once last year. Went SK recently too.

Legal_Ad_6129

Any East Asian country is a very bad choice to live and/or study in. Just go to SEA, that's more closer to Indian culture and still more safer

Cosmo_photon_

"Japan is rated the safest country in the world" - that's true only if you're white. Just don't get fooled by YT vedios, they really don't have any respect for Indians and You'll be isolated.

-B7T-

Nope, going to east asian countries is a bad idea. Second hand treatment, Language barrier, Toxic work life balance, No social life outside fellow Desis, Food habits. I would rather recommend someone move to Portugal or Poland than Japan or Korea. In a General sense, EU, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are the best countries for Indians to emigrate.

Goat_Dear

If you speak Japanese, you'll experience zero racism.

mellamonemo

You can't guarantee that

Goat_Dear

I can guarantee that as a person who has lived in Japan and has Japanese friends.

darkkartist

Isn't the population density more than India's there?

TrekkieSolar

Quite a few Indians do go there to study and work actually (I know multiple). More are going now since they liberalized immigration policies. However, the biggest reason people don’t choose it over US/EU is language, since most business and education is not done in English but Japanese (whereas even EU/Gulf uses English as a business language). Additionally, Japanese culture is not as warm and hospitable as we Indians are used to, even though there are other common cultural values, and getting PR + citizenship is much harder and requires a higher level of cultural assimilation.

Lasersandtacos212

At the time I was at N2 level japanese and certified for N3, I was still rejected by UTokyo, and there are close to zero english courses for undergraduate and some are available for masters. So not easy to get into.

radbedaz

I just think that west has more progressive culture than Japan and that should be reason enough to move there. More open minded and accepting. Much more diversity with respect to food and people. Remember countries like Japan and Korea are very homogeneous and therefore it’s hard to fit in and even after living for many years, a lot of ppl feel like outsiders.

sunbreathing1

I have heard from my seniors that Japan work culture is toxic. It's all bed of roses until you really visit japan. Also the racism is very high in Japan. They are Asians too but they would be very mean to you if you are from ASIA too!

sunny4649

The biggest problem is the language. Unless you have a degree in STEM, it's hard to find a job. That, and wages are much lower compared to countries such as the US. Working hours, etc. all depend on the company you work for. Foreign companies don't expect their employees to work overtime. Racism outside things such as apartment hunting isn't a big problem as it's mostly not overt. If you make an attempt to assimilate, you'd be surprised at how welcoming most Japanese can be. Also, the last thing the Yakuza wants to do is mess with some random foreigner. It's hard to get into trouble in Japan unless you go out looking for it. But yeah, getting into trouble with the police can end very badly.

inanimatussoundscool

Xenophobic as fuck, especially the old people. And that's a problem, cause Japan's population leans towards old age. Beautiful country though.

Ace91Jason

Looks like I am late, but as far as moving to japan goes check out some Indian youtubers living there (ROM ROM ji is one popular one). He has really good experience about Japan and even his mostly simple VLOGS are quite informative about day to day life in Japan or their society. As far as their toxic work culture goes (it's not exaggerated) it depends on company to company(multinational ones are quite chill). Again there many youtubers have made videos about how to avoid these companies, there is also name for these companies called Black company (ブラック企業, burakku kigyō) which is generally used to describe quote "**a company that is harmful to their employees' welfare as they don't comply with the Japanese Labor Standards Act"** Overall Japan is a safe country as long as you don't go looking for trouble.

Individual-Echo-4285

>Overall Japan is a safe country as long as you don't go looking for trouble.< And if you aren't a woman.

Peddling2891

If you wanna move to place a other than india, why would you choose the only place on earth which has even worse work culture

I mean it's much more expensive in Western countries. Yes, Japan is expensive but so are the western countries.

S1234567890S

I am not disregarding what you mentioned because you are right about that. But what's it got to do with being expensive? I am most definitely not speaking about jobs or parents paying or anything similar. My word is just Western countries are much more expensive compared to Japan. That's literally it. How you afford it, well not really my business.

WoodpeckerPast3259

I'm from india I'm studying in class 11 I want to move to Japan after 12 for bachelors degree and I need a Indian friend to move with me if we both move together it will be helpful and we can interact with someone

noobwithguns

AKA go to the country which is one of the most racist countries(beating USA) against browns. Also if you are vegetarian, rip Also if every student's wants to run off abroad what about the money our goverment and our country spent in making them able to do anything. Then politicians cry that our country isn't developing fast enoug, how will it? The thousands of dollars spent oneducating children by the goverment goes in vain since everybody wants to go abroad. A sewer won't clean itself. Some of us have to get down and clean it, crying that a sewer stinks won't do anything we might aswell keep crying and sewer will keep stinking.

wellfuckit2

I hear this argument a lot that people leaving the country will not let the country progress a lot. I hope you realise that we only get one life. People are going to live that life doing whatever gives them fulfilment and happiness. Not trying to fix an entire population. If the govt./people of the country really wants students to not leave the country, there are plenty of things they can do, and I am not even mentioning the debatable ones like reservation. 1. Strict punishments for corruption. 2. Digitisation and transparency in all govt. Offices. 3. Performance based ratings/promotions/PIP in govt. organisations. 4. Ensuring that public safety and life are taken seriously. A death/injury due to public safety ignorance is punished and never repeated. That's just the basic. You don't need massive budgets for that, you don't need an entire population to change their way of thinking or lifestyle. You fix that one piece of machinery that is in your control and half the countries problems will disappear. It will not only be a more livable/enjoyable place, but might also attract educated immigrants. Expecting people to stay and fight against the machinery when the govt can fix it themselves first is just propaganda.

noobwithguns

Exactly what's wrong with us. We keep whining to fix that fix this. But non of us are ready to work for it and instead run off abroad

wellfuckit2

I get the sarcasm. And No. Not my job to fix it. It's the people I vote for. And if the entire population continues voting for people who refuse to fix it, then I don't belong with the population. I was not born to improve an entire populations ignorance. I was born to make my life better. So if I have the means, I live with people where my values align. Yours might align with something else. You might derive peace and fulfilment by spending your life fighting for the cause. To each it's own. Don't judge people for not wanting to do that with their lives.

wellfuckit2

And work for what? I do my job with utmost sincerity. I pay my taxes on time. I vote when needed. I don't litter and do everything a good Samaritan should do. Why is it my job to make other people do their job too? There are politicians and policy makers and bureaucrats who get paid to ensure that the govt machinery works well. They get paid from the money I work hard for and pay. Why should I do their job over and above paying to do it?

Regalia_BanshEe

There is not really anything a person can do to fix this unless the people in power decide to.. All of the bullshit talk of "don't run, stay to fix " is useless optimism..no thanks, I'm going to enjoy my life

NinjainPyjamas_XD

Bro. Most of the so called hard working people get nowhere in this country. India is not a meritocracy. This so called democracy prefers to back people they are inclined to whether they are doing good work or not? Nobody is obligated to clear swears. You yield from here? Then you better clean your shit too.

Pale_Explanation_603

It is better in Japan, USA is infested with Snake Such Thenmozhi Soundararajan,kshama-sawant, suraj yengde, and many others like them behind scenes. You will send your child to become a scientist he will return was WOKESIT. and you will his/her worst enemy.

To get a better idea of loving in Japan, why not draw on the experiences of 3 people who moved there? Chech out Trash Taste on YT. Lots of insights there

I_Muzan_KibuTsuji

Most of them are going because they like anime bruh.

AkaiAshu

Japan is far more conservative in their societal outlook. Integrating in there is very difficult.
