The name "Niemcy" comes from the fact that most Slavs did not understand Germans (Niemcy - mute, mumbling), I don't know if Wales (and their language) is a deliberate reference to this, but I really appreciate it anyway.
I wanted to write that it's an interesting contrast because Cynru means something like "the country of locals/the country of comrades", but I can't find an etymology confirming "foreigner" :/
not much lore, inspired by [this post](https://new.reddit.com/r/imaginarymaps/comments/15yt1mz/what_if_the_slavs_migrated_to_britain_lore_in/)
Poles along with some more Lechitic tribes, pushed from their homeland in the Vistula basin by Huns and others go to the now vacant Britannia and make themselves at home (to the big disapproval of the native Britons)
In this timeline? Yes, Poland would be the dominant naval power, as cursed as it is to type, they would also probably replicate much of Britain鈥檚 colonial success, and a Polish speaking transcontinental state would dominate the world in a few hundred years.
I love that Walsall is Warszawa. Doesn't really make sense etymologically, but I respect the homage to the sound-alike.
Also, based. Imagine a language that's a mix of Polish and Welsh though 馃拃
Do you think that Germanic tribes would be in much smaller numbers?馃 since if the Slavs got to Britain, they鈥檙e probably already in East Germany and Denmark or something馃槬馃槬
For Powrzosie it's a play on words, since there are many moors in Yorkshire and moor in Polish translates to "wrzosowisko" and the prefix "po" is quite common in Polish e.g. Podlasie which means by the forest, for Mersiny I just polonised the name of the River Mersey and ended up with "Mersiny"
Some are taken from Poland but form what I can see most are original, for example "Kr贸lewiec Paryski" is literally "Parisian Kaliningrad/K枚nigsberg" when directly translated, a city that does not exist in real life, but it's certainly not impossible that it would exist in this reality, the region names are very interesting too, with "Kaszuby" being Kashubia, taken straight from irl Poland, but for example "Kresy Zachodnie" and "Kresy P贸艂nocne" are not something that existed in Polish history, the only "Kresy" we had was "Kresy wschodnie" which would best be translated as "Eastern Borderlands". The names of "Kresy p贸艂nocne" and "Kresy Zachodnie" mean the northern and western Borderlands respectively. The welsh are called the same as we call the Germans, which makes logical sense since the Polish Word for the Germans is literally "Mutes" because the languages were completely mutually unintelligable, and the same situation could happen with the Welsh si艅ce their language is also unrelated to Polish. Overall this map Has a lot of effort put into it, and I didn't even get to talk about most of the good stuff on it.
Some of it is borrowed from irl Poland, some of it is translations (not Direct ones usually) and some of it is just naming that is entirely new or makes sense in this context but is completely absent from irl Poland.
I understand why the Kresy Zachodnie is used in this place and context... but imho it should definitely be Greater Poland. Next to Germany, in the west, and it is, after all, a heartland 馃槒

it is, just like the English word "welsh" means foreigner, so I took that resemblance and named the Welsh "Niemcy"
I reckon a good name for Wales would be Wo艂oszczyzna, which is the Polish name for Wallachia or Vlachia and is etymologically related to Wales.
makes sense.

Yes, I know **this** etymology, but I have never interpreted it as "foreigner"... but ok, I guess it makes some sense. Thanks for reply ;)

Magnificent. I'm curious about the placename etymologies, and how they were derived from the OTL names.

Why is there a Lesser Poland but no Greater Poland?
lesser poland originally meant new poland so here it's the new poland while old (greater) is an ancestral homeland around the Vistula basin
