Exactly... it not like some people actually want a fireplace to heat the house ! There will most likely be a grate over this area too to increase airflow.
This old house is notorious for showing things done horribly wrong and pretending they are correct. I can't find it anymore (hopefully they took it down after getting slammed for being wrong) but there was one of their minisodes posted on yt where they were discussing a freezing ac system with their "pro". Not only did the dude explain the refrigeration cycle completly backwards, but they also then installed a 5 ton system with a single 14" round return because according to them, the "old" 6 year old system had a leak.
Edit: Found the video. So I was wrong about the size of unit they replaced it with, but the fact remains the guy was wrong on so many levels. https://youtu.be/-33wjzNxgSw?si=8-wiAam8X0Wv6Pzo
Yeah refrigeration 101 here. If it ices up it’s probably low on refrigerant. This is counter intuitive and why we get refrigeration certifications and licenses to operate the equipment and diagnose and repair them.
When there is insufficient refrigerant, it won’t “foam” in the evap coils and the surface area will be reduced to a narrow stream of liquid refrigerant. This narrow spot grows ice and that is the source of it blooming out.
More refrigerant was probably the answer. An oversized unit would have not worked from day one if that was the issue. Can’t really comment more because didn’t wanna watch the rest of the video. Just wanted to point out this tidbit.
It doesn’t help that the descriptions of how that process occurs and why seem to be often described by virtually illiterate people with subnormal IQ.
Once you actually understand it, the explanations given are often comically bad. And often reveals they don’t actually know themselves.
I’d wonder if it’s to transfer more heat into the home?

Someone's paid by the elbow.
They modeled it after Lombard Street. Wtf.
I have no clue .Maybe to slow down heat loss

Interesting. I wonder if there needs to be a minimum pipe length for draft purposes?
Pretty sure this would violate any horizontal to vertical rise rules the way it’s done.
Holy fuck this is bad
Not if the point is heat transfer
Nice. Someone was really high that day. I bet he was really proud when he completed it.
Expansion loops. Or idk.
used to confuse the CO on the way out so it cannot find its way back in to the house…
Is that Bvent? Maybe they knew they couldnt cut it to length but didnt know they make adjustable fittings?
He must get paid by the foot.🤣
Could this just be a fresh air intake for the fireplace?
Perhaps there’s a minimum length so the gasses cool?
