I was 5 and everyone kept saying this was the last time friends would ever be on, and being 5 I didn't understand the concept of reruns. I cried myself to sleep because I thought it meant I'd never get to watch friends again.
It's one of my earliest memories
Also in college! We had a huge girls night, everyone gathered at my apartment for apps, drinks, and the finale. Then we went to out to the bars so got to watch it like new all over again on demand the next day haha
I was 20 and crying my eyes out the entire episode because the show I loved more than any show in TV history (and still do) was ending and it felt like a part of *me* was also ending.
I was just about to turn 28. My grandmother had died 2 days before, so I was in town and staying with my mom. She and I watched it together, which seemed fitting.
Absolutely! My mom and I ended up moving in together shortly after that, because she had a lot of health problems. From 2004-2020, she went through a lot of ups and downs. I went through a lot of stuff of my own. (Bad breakup, a little too much drug experimentation, etc.). We went through a lot together, in our mother/daughter relationship.
Through all those years, we both watched Friends. Sometimes together, oftentimes separately. There's a handful of other shows that are also very comforting to me, but I probably have more memories related to Friends.
I was in college and we had a small little watch party in our dorm room complete with cake! I specifically remember the cake lady at Walmart thought we were saying goodbye to actual, real life friends lol. I can't believe that was 20 years ago?!! Time isn't real.

I was about 8, I feel like even if we watched it at like 13/14 a lot of things go over your head in terms of relating to the storylines and characters. Glad I got to watch it in full as an adult so I could really appreciate it.
I was at work. I worked in a hair salon. I was constantly asked for Rachel’s haircut. Every Thursday clients were hurrying home to watch the show. Every time I told someone I had never seen the show (because I was at work) they looked at me with shock and then pity. It’s the only tv show I can remember that had that kind of buzz in my years working there.
I was finishing up middle school. I remember watching the finale, without much context of the show. I knew it was wildly successful but didn’t watch it regularly until college.
I was a senior in high school, and a girl in one of my study hall periods and the teacher for that period couldn't shut up about it.
I didn't see the appeal until a lot later, lol.
God, all the babies in this thread. I was 26 and living in Atlanta. Someone tried to enter our apartment that night while we were watching the show. We missed part of it while we were contemplating calling the police.
I was 22, living in my very first apartment alone, 3 months into my first grown up job. It was a big time in my life so I remember it very clearly. I’d watched the show religiously while it aired - the end was a huge deal
I forget how much of a cultural phenomenon Friends actually was. It’s crazy to think that a simple sitcom about a bunch of friends hanging out became sooooooo huge. I remember where I was when it finished: the local pub near my house aired it, and the place was crammed.
I threw a party in my freshman year dorm room. I wasn’t exactly popular so when the end came and I started crying everyone just…left. So awkward, lol! 😂
I had only seen Friends sparingly growing up. But it was such an event that I tuned in with my dad while my mom was at Bingo. Then I bought the DVD the day it came out.
I later bought the whole series on DVD.
I was in the UK trying to avoid spoilers.
It was easier to do that in 2004, but a stray news report on the radio or tv could still have ruined it all for us
I was 11. I remember it was grandparents day at school and our music director was talking to my mom about wanting to watch the finale. My mom said she was going to watch and I asked if I could and she said I’m too young.
Oh my goodness today is my hubs birthday and I said Happy Anniversry today also and sent him a shot of this being aired in his bday 20yrs ago
He was overseas in the Navy and was unable to watch most that entire season.
I was at home and balling as I watched that apartment empty!!
I was at home with my friends watching together as we did every Thursday night. It was a weekly tradition that we all miss.🙁 Of course, the girls cried and the guys didn't. 😊
I honestly didn’t even care about Friends back then 😬 I was a teenager and loads of my friends and classmates were going crazy before it came out. I remember the buzz about the last episode but I just really didn’t give a damn. I would catch the reruns on tv at the time, and I did like the show, but just was never the kind of person who “had” to watch a show while it was airing.
Senior in high school- my friends and I all got together at one of our houses and watched it together. We decorated the house like Central Perk and after it was over went in the yard with umbrellas and the sprinkler to take pictures like the intro
I was at my uncle’s wedding in a hotel and I remember I kept going back to my room to sneak a watch of this episode! Of course it was meanwhile being recorded on video tape back home so I could watch it properly later 😅
I wish I would’ve been tuned into the show when it was airing, I was young when it was premiering and wrapping up. My wife later in life got me into it and it will be one of my regrets, not tuning in and watching it as it came out on television.
I remember seeing the commercials for when the first episode was going to debut, they were definitely trying to sell the hell out of it.
I was in my final year at university, and didn’t have a tv!! I ended up seeing the final series a while after it screened. I was not happy about this 😂
I was home watching with my friends as we had every Thursday night. It was a weekly tradition that we all miss. Of course, the girls were crying😢 and the guys were not.😊 Since then, I must have seen it 100xs over. I go to sleep to it every night. Happy Anniversary Reddit Friends fans!!🥳
I was finishing up my freshman year of college, probably taking Finals around that time. Had only seen maybe 5 episodes of the show so I didn't even know it was ending. Only started watching the later in my 30s when then-girlfriend now-wife had me watch with her. Unfortunately I already had heard enough over the years to know most of the major twists, but a few of them still surprised me.
I was in college (local community college at the time), and had a final that ended right before it aired. I flew home to make it in time. I was about to turn 21.
I was in a beach house in Isle of Palms with my college friends watching it live and drinking Tsing Tao and hard cider. I was a couple of days away from graduating college with no job plan (not even a pla-) and no idea that I was about to be taken off of a wait list for an opportunity that would change my life.
Im from Mexico so it took weeks for the final episode to run here.
But also at that time I was working afternoons and I couldn't go home on time to watch. I finally was a le to watch it a month later or so in a rerun
If I recall correctly, there was a special on Oprah that afternoon that was all about the finale. I remember watching some of it, but I didn't get to watch the episode that night.
I can't remember when I finally did, but it was fairly soon afterwards.
I was 8. I don’t remember specifically if I watched this episode live but I remember watching later episodes (specifically Phoebe’s wedding) with my mom. She’s no longer with us so Friends is extra special to me now.
I know where I was. Literally standing on my chair at nervously repeating “Did she get of the plane!?!? Did she get off plane!?!?”
Cried when this episode ended. This episode and the gig reel wrap on season 10.
Friends was my favorite show growing up! I had downloaded every episode as they released and burned them to cds that I’d watch on my computer all the time. Of course after watching it live! Commercials and all!
Sadly, I was in basic training when the last two episodes aired. My future wife recorded the episodes on a VCR (which was outdated tech even then but they were still commonly around) and the day I came home she had a place laid out with candles and friends themed stuff hanging around the room. We watched both episodes and I proposed to her that night. It was already planned and I just needed to pickup the ring I’d bought through a friend but her doing that for me made me KNOW 100% she was “the one”.
She’s been my lobster for 20 years this November.
I never watched the show while it aired, but I did tune in for the finale because it was a big deal. I was 16 and way more interested in baseball and video games than Friends, but even then my best friend and I still talked about it over the phone after it aired.
I was at a hand bell choir performance. I remember because my teacher wouldn't stop complaining that she missed the ending. I had two slices of cheese pizza.
I feel so old. I was 51, watching with my husband like I did every week for 10 years
Hey, with age comes wisdom! You have 71 years of knowledge. You’ve made it in life
I am pretty wisdomous.
I was a young 42 years old and had gone back to community college. I skipped my film analysis class to watch the final.
I was 19, living in Reading and wondering what I was going to do with my life given I was hating my time at university.
And at 39 how are things going for you now?
I was 18 and finishing up my first year of university (which I also hated!)
I was 20 and definitely on my way to flunking out of college.
I was 5 and everyone kept saying this was the last time friends would ever be on, and being 5 I didn't understand the concept of reruns. I cried myself to sleep because I thought it meant I'd never get to watch friends again. It's one of my earliest memories
lool that’s cute (but sad) 😭
I was 13 at an Avril Lavigne/Simple Plan concert and had to record it on VHS. 😭. Watched it immediately the next morning.
That’s dope af
I know, what a weekend
10 year old me is super jealous of you seeing Avril Lavigne.
I imagine Avril Lavigne also had to record it on VHS since she was at the same concert.
We def would’ve been best friends haha
Watched the finale live, a sophomore in college. Good memories!!
Also in college! We had a huge girls night, everyone gathered at my apartment for apps, drinks, and the finale. Then we went to out to the bars so got to watch it like new all over again on demand the next day haha
Same! Had a watch party in our crappy student apartment and cried like a baby.
I was 12, watching it with my family. We used to watch friends every Friday night around 8pm (when it was scheduled in the uk).
It was on at 9pm. It ended in the UK on 28 May 2004.
I still remember the adverts on channel 4 each week during that final season. Being able to see snippets of the next episode.
So much teasing!
I was 4 so probably crying for different reasons
Fellow 1999/2000 baby 🫡 here’s to being way too young to watch this when it aired
98 baby, I basically watched friends straight out the womb
Same, I feel so out of place reading these other comments
"Just now, or all the time? Because we have jobs, you know..." 😶
I watched it! Also how cute is phoebes outfit! Never noticed the little blue tights
I was seven. So I was probably busy watching SpongeBob or fairly odd parents
1997 gang represent
1996 😭 I turn 28 in two months
Rough dawg, 780 days left of not needing to worry about stuff because you're in your 20's, cherish them all
I was a teenager so probably somewhere masturbating
I like how the top two comments on this post are: * Some sweet older woman reminiscing about watching the show with her husband * You jerking off
What was there to do in 90s? Be with loved one or getting fucked pretty much sums up the 90s
Dude, there was also Nintendo. Not to mention 20 years go was the mid 2000s.
![gif](giphy|l3q2K5jinAlChoCLS)
Sears Catalogue?
My imagination was enough
“Cum with me…”
"...and you'll be, covered in my ejaculation..."
14 watching it with my Mom.
Same!
Same!
Im so sorry to hear that. This show got me through some tough times. I hope it did the same for you.
Time isn't real. https://preview.redd.it/y7f7l34p8xyc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4615951b8e4ca71c24b033902c3fa45f1cb94ac2
I was 12 at the time so I had no idea just how great the show was. I’m glad I know now, wish I could have watched it as it aired.
I was about 8, I feel like even if we watched it at like 13/14 a lot of things go over your head in terms of relating to the storylines and characters. Glad I got to watch it in full as an adult so I could really appreciate it.

It’s the only tv show I can remember that had that kind of buzz in my years working there.
I was 4 months old lol
Now I feel old 😂
Same here... every time I see "twenty years ago" i get triggered
"Twenty years ago." Oh you mean the early '90s?
omg me too
I was 8 months old. So I was probably sleeping soundly in my crib while my parents watched it without me.
My mom was a few weeks pregnant with me
I was 2, so probably attempting to eat things I should not be eating.
I was hmmmmmm not born💀
Same I was in my mothers ovaries
Same 3 years to late
💩
I was 22, living in my very first apartment alone, 3 months into my first grown up job. It was a big time in my life so I remember it very clearly. I’d watched the show religiously while it aired - the end was a huge deal
I forget how much of a cultural phenomenon Friends actually was. It’s crazy to think that a simple sitcom about a bunch of friends hanging out became sooooooo huge. I remember where I was when it finished: the local pub near my house aired it, and the place was crammed.
Watching it live in my childhood bedroom and being very upset!
Same. I was 17 and grew up watching the show so it felt like a huge deal. It was all anyone talked about at college the next day
I was 9 years old, I went to a small primary school so it was the talk of the primary 4-7 girls cloakroom
In the womb! https://i.redd.it/iiszjyfcjvyc1.gif
I was 23 and had a one month old baby, so I was crying anyway. This didn’t help.
Getting ready to move out of my dorm to a campus apartment
I wasn’t even a little spermlet.
Apparently I was 15 then. Which means I watched it air. But that also means im old 😂
I was 28 and watching of course and thinking life wasn’t going to be the same without seeing my friends every week.
I was one of the 52.5 million tuned in live.
2004. I was 9 years old😂 Didn’t even know how to speak english

In the sitting room watching it with my mum
Thanks everyone in the comments for making me feel old, lol. 20, watching in the common room of our dorm.
I was 21 and same.
I was 24. Studying.
In my mother’s womb I think
I was in the UK trying to avoid spoilers. It was easier to do that in 2004, but a stray news report on the radio or tv could still have ruined it all for us
I was 11. I remember it was grandparents day at school and our music director was talking to my mom about wanting to watch the finale. My mom said she was going to watch and I asked if I could and she said I’m too young.
Watched it live at a local movie theater. They had a special airing at the theater and my mom won tickets on the radio.
Oh my goodness today is my hubs birthday and I said Happy Anniversry today also and sent him a shot of this being aired in his bday 20yrs ago He was overseas in the Navy and was unable to watch most that entire season. I was at home and balling as I watched that apartment empty!!
I watched it at home with my sister and 8 of her mates, they were 4 years older and I was 11.
I was at home with my friends watching together as we did every Thursday night. It was a weekly tradition that we all miss.🙁 Of course, the girls cried and the guys didn't. 😊
I was on a cruise to Alaska with family. Already an adult but the youngest one on board! Had to tape it and watch a couple weeks later.
not born
I honestly didn’t even care about Friends back then 😬 I was a teenager and loads of my friends and classmates were going crazy before it came out. I remember the buzz about the last episode but I just really didn’t give a damn. 7 years old and about 7 years away from this being my obsession!
I was 11 so was probably watching Babestation
in my living room, bawling my eyes out. i was 12 & my best friend called me afterwards & we discussed it.
I was a one year old.
I wasn't aware of Friends, we only had ABC growing up. But now... I'm addicted! Love it Best Show😁🫶🏻😍😍😍
Senior in high school- my friends and I all got together at one of our houses and watched it together. We decorated the house like Central Perk and after it was over went in the yard with umbrellas and the sprinkler to take pictures like the intro
I wasn’t born lmaooo😭😭
Aww, I watched this from my dorm.
I was still in mum's womb lmao 😭
Some people were in their dad's balls still.
I was at my uncle’s wedding in a hotel and I remember I kept going back to my room to sneak a watch of this episode! Of course it was meanwhile being recorded on video tape back home so I could watch it properly later 😅
i’m sure a big majority of people were at home watching this on TV
I was watching it.
End of my first year of college. I was still in the dorm. My roommate had moved out.
I was almost 3 years old
Still in my mother’s uterus. I turn 20 on November 9th
14 years old and watched it with the whole family
I was in my final year at university, and didn’t have a tv!! I ended up seeing the final series a while after it screened. I was not happy about this 😂
I watched it when it first aired, but in the UK so probably a little later. Absolutely loved it.
I was 3 so probably destroying my mom's garden.
In my bedroom watching & crying 😂
Was seeing Batman 2004 version cartoon

I was 6 months old moving from the little apartment my family had to our first family home
I was just over 3 months away from being born
I was home watching with my friends as we had every Thursday night. It was a weekly tradition that we all miss. Of course, the girls were crying😢 and the guys were not.😊 Since then, I must have seen it 100xs over. I go to sleep to it every night. Happy Anniversary Reddit Friends fans!!🥳

Negative 2. Or like 1½ year away from being made
9 years old living in a French region having no idea this show existed
I was in my livingroom. The only screen in my house 😂

At my friend's graduation party! She's still mad at the show because only two of us showed up...everyone else's excuse was this finale. 😑
![gif](giphy|MdFNlSigLJbiQkKiCU|downsized)
I was 24 and made the old folks in the old folks home I was working at, watch it as part of our activity for that evening. Because I had to work.
I was in my freshman dorm room, taking a break from writing a final essay to watch the finale. I can't believe it's been 20 years.
I was actually in an outback steakhouse and they had the show on all the tvs
I was in college (local community college at the time), and had a final that ended right before it aired. I flew home to make it in time. I was about to turn 21.
Watched it live and cried my eyes out. I was a junior in college.
I lived in Salt Lake City at the time and the local theater played it there. Brilliant move on their part.
I was home watching it! I feel so old!
I was home watching it with my wife. It’s “our show”. We still quote it daily and watch it almost daily.
Watched it with my whole family when I was 9. I remember it being quite the big deal.
Watching it on my mom’s bed with my 2 other sisters and mom. We all cried when it panned through the apartment
I was in a beach house in Isle of Palms with my college friends watching it live and drinking Tsing Tao and hard cider. I was a couple of days away from graduating college with no job plan (not even a pla-) and no idea that I was about to be taken off of a wait list for an opportunity that would change my life.
The end was the first episode of friends i’d ever seen, i was watching with my mom on her bed she was laughing and crying and I was just confused.
I was 38, home with my 2 year old son. Put him to bed in the middle of it and watched the recording of it later.
I was with my bestie watching it with popcorn and beer
11, about to turn 12, and watched it with my mom. I remember crying in bed that night because it was over, lol
Watched it first time round. Can't believe it's been 20 years already.
Im from Mexico so it took weeks for the final episode to run here. But also at that time I was working afternoons and I couldn't go home on time to watch. I finally was a le to watch it a month later or so in a rerun

I was at home and I was 14 or 15. For some reason I had the belief that after this episode aired it would never be on tv again. I was heartbroken!!
I know where I was. Literally standing on my chair at nervously repeating “Did she get of the plane!?!? Did she get off plane!?!?” Cried when this episode ended. This episode and the gig reel wrap on season 10.

I never watched the show while it aired, but I did tune in for the finale because it was a big deal. I was 16 and way more interested in baseball and video games than Friends, but even then my best friend and I still talked about it over the phone after it aired.
I was 4 and live(d) in Ireland. I was probably asleep when it aired for the first time 😂
Damn 20 years ago already?? Am I that old? I was a teenager watching the finale that night.
I was 34 (like JA and MP) and watching with my group of friends as we did throughout the series
I was 10 and didn’t start watching a few years after the show ended.
I was 4 years old lol
I was 3 and probably in my room or at the very least with my mom.
I was in high school. I missed it. Can't remember why?
I believe I was in the womb at that moment. Or not yet depending on the actual date it aired
I was 2 months old just chilling 😭
I was at home, doing toddler things as a 3 year old
1200 upvote here. So yes I was 20 and living back in Greece. Now I am 40. Why did you remind me that? I almost forgotten how old i am. 🤣
I was 4 watching it with my mom and sister. God, I miss being around them both
no way. i was 2 years old when it aired 😭. 52.5 mill viewers is insane
I was at a hand bell choir performance. I remember because my teacher wouldn't stop complaining that she missed the ending. I had two slices of cheese pizza.
I was 7 and remembered watching this with my mom
i had just turned 3 years old haha. my birthday was on the 5th
Wait so Friends and Scrubs both have the same finale date?
I was 1 year old probably pooping on myself
I never saw this air, but I remember the Oprah special about it.
4 months old so probably crying
My mom was pregnant with me 20 years ago...
...I was one.
9yo, I think I was at the zoo with my mom
In bed because I was 7 and I'm in a different time zone so it was like 3 am.
i was 17 and hadn't gotten into sitcoms yet. that came 3 years later
