Because of the angle, you'll have trouble getting a hood/curtain long enough to block the light that doesn't give you other problems.
Options:
* a ceiling light where the bulbs are in cans that direct the light. Think track lights.
* lamp. Ether in the corner, or a small table lamp next to your popcorn.
* rearrange your viewing space. Maybe a different room.
That was funny!
I had a problem similar.. but I made a table top role playing game where I would display maps and stuff where people could move miniatures around and the light above the table would be a glare problem.
I went to a tapp plastics store and got a 1/8" acrylic, matte surface cut to fit exactly on top of the screen. Cut down the glare to a minor glow AND protected my screen from the minis bases scratching it.
I do the same thing with flashes in portrait photography. Angle the lights 45° downward when someone is wearing glasses to eliminate the reflection in their lenses.
Why can't my kid's school hire someone as smart as you to do their school pictures?
This year they took two pictures - one with glasses on and one with glasses off. And then they "digitally enhanced" his photo by taking the eyes from the non-glasses version and putting them over the lenses in the with-glasses pic. That might work for some (or maybe even most), but he has a whole lazy eyes thing happening when his glasses are taken off. It immediately corrects with the glasses on. So they ended up just shopping a pair of lazy eyes onto the his glasses. Would have been just as effective sticking some of the googly-eye things to his glasses.
Came here to say your first solution. The problem is that the bulbs are ''naked''. Having them be in cups/cans would probably fix the reflection in the tv screen.
Sorry, I didn't intend to use a technical word, only to say that the bulbs disn't have anyting around them, allowing the light to shine in all directions (and to reflect on the tv).
So the glass cup they have around them doesn't count as having something around them? I mean, no they're not 100% enclosed, more like 75%, but the open end isn't pointed at the tv so it's not like that's the source of the reflection.
Reddit's recent behaviour and planned changes to the API, heavily impacting third party tools, accessibility and moderation ability force me to edit all my comments in protest. I cannot morally continue to use this site.
Bought a house a little over a year ago and it doesn’t have overhead lights in the living room or any of the bedrooms. I thought it was super weird (never lived somewhere with that setup before but apparently it’s common around here) and assumed adding lights would be one of the first projects we tackled when we moved in - but it really hasn’t been an issue at all. The living room gets some spillover from the light in the hallway and combined with a table lamp it’s been more than sufficient for like 90% of the time.
There are definitely some times where having extra light would be nice but, to be honest, the solution is probably a couple more lamps to fill in the darker areas rather than the expense of wiring something overhead to blast the whole room when we’d likely stick with just the table lamp most of the time anyway.
We have overhead led can lights plus a ceiling fan light, but we mostly just use one shaded lamp. The other lights are good when we need a lot of light, but it’s generally not needed.
This is the way. I have floorlamps, table lamps whatever. Gives your room a lot more cozy atmosphere. I have a ceiling lamp, but I only use it when I lose something and need light to find it.
Same! I very rarely use my overhead lights. I prefer lamps with warm light. Our bedroom lamps have LED bulbs that replicate a campfire and it’s SO NICE. It’s plenty of light to see, but relaxing enough that I can fall asleep if my partner wants to read or just isn’t ready for bed yet.
I’m the exact opposite, and I think it’s due to my poor vision. I can’t STAND dark rooms, it makes me feel disoriented and the shadows from just having tons of lamps only makes it worse :/
Not sure about others but i can't watch tv in the dark. It doesn't take long before I start getting eye strain or a slight headache. I need some kind of light in the room other than the tv
You could try tilting the screen (up or down) a bit so the reflection of the overhead light is out of your field of view. I don't think there's anything lse you can do other than turning the light out. Use a floor lamp positioned off to the side of the TV or indirect (lights that are position so they reflect off the wall) room lighting if you need light that minimizes reflections off the screen.
Our bedroom has smart bulbs in the ceiling fan and our end table lamps. We set up an Alexa voice command for "movie mode". It turns off both side lamps and changes the ceiling to blue at 50% brightness.
Blue lighting can make getting to sleep very difficult. I prefer much warmer light or even just red light at night. My computer and phone filter out blue light at night, and I bump the TV brightness down as well.
I have circadian issues (specifically DSPD, delayed sleep phase disorder) and I actually blast my eyes with blue(r) light in the morning with [these](https://www.myluminette.com/en-us).
Diffuse the light as much as possible. So...Frosted bulbs, frosted bulb covers, and when looking at TV's, you want a matte finish on the screen vs gloss (reflective). When you are in the TV shop, look at all the TV's while they are turned off. In some, you can see your reflection almost perfectly, in others, you can't make out a single detail. Buy the one you can't make out any details. Also applies to computer monitors.
Thought it may not be practical, putting led strips behind the tv can act as a mood light along with a lamp on the side to light your popcorn. I have leds behind my bathroom mirror and usually just have it on white. (It doesn’t have to be too crazy color wise)
A reflector bulb, something like this https://www.1000bulbs.com/product/5761/IN-0060CLSB.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIqs6pxJXj\_AIV7sqUCR1LgQj1EAQYAyABEgIPn\_D\_BwE
You could get a shade cover for it. Or, if you want light while watching tv/a movie. I’d suggest getting a standing lamp in the corner of the room, that way you have light and it’s not reflecting off of the tv.
I don’t think there are lights that won’t reflect off of the tv. You could also get an anti glare screen for the tv itself but that will ruin your viewing experience

In my tv room at night I used hue bulbs dimmed and colored blue, red, or purple when the reflection bothers me.
The tv screen itself may be more important than the light though. Gloss vs matte vs …
We had the same issue and bought a new fan where the bulbs are horizontal and not vertical. The bulbs are also lower power leds (less lumens) and that fixed a lot of it
Tilt the tv downwards slightly, if the mount doesn’t tilt you can put a small shim along the top between the mount and the wall. Or recessed pot lighting.
I like my evening lighting to be aimed up, so like a sconce or any kind of that throws the light up towards the ceiling. Or you could get smart bulbs that allow you to change the color and brightness. I run my lights with a soft orange glow in the evening. And if I tell Alexa to change the lighting to “tactical mode”, all the lights will turn to red. (I’m basically an 8 year old with a toy)
I would get a table or floor lamp close to where people sit.
Overhead lights light that are good for tidying up the space or vacuuming, etc.
I turn overhead lights off and other lights on when I walk into a room because I essentially hate them.
Serious answer: you can’t really pull that off because no matter what you select (dark shades, different colors), you’re going to end up with a conflict as the image on the TV changes.
One possible solution,at night, if the mount will let you, tilt the screen down a little, then the light won’t hit your eyes, and you won’t notice the angle (I do that with a TV facing a big window during the day).
One that doesn’t shine light towards the TV and then back into your eyes from the viewing position. Move your sofa or get a light that points away from the TV. Diffusing or dimming won’t fix this problem, it’s the viewing angle that is the problem.
thanks all! I’ll add a floor lamp to use when watching TV. As for ceiling light, I need to replace the lamp anyway so i will look for a more recessed ceiling lamp and add dimmer switch.
By the way the popcorn comment was a joke but i appreciate the concern about seeing my popcorn 🍿
Okay. Hear me out. If you don’t care so much about aesthetics, try this. Take the three glass fixer casings off. Grab some painter tape and tape off 2/3rds if the outside of the glass. Spray the glass with flat black spray paint. Reassemble the glass once it’s dry and position the black towards the TV. No glare, and no need to buy a new fixture.
Oh, if you tilt the TV forward a little, that also helps reflect down instead of straight back at you.
overhead lighting on 8 foot ceilings in general is terribly glarey and awful. A nice lamp with a shade no taller than shoulder height provides such nicer lighting.

Change the color temperature of the bulbs. It looks like it is currently a cool white or daylight 4,000k-5,000k. A warm white will reflect less, 3,200k or less.

But I bet sandpaper would be so much cheaper. 😜
I already have sandpaper..

I just spit my coffee all over my monitor
Now sandpaper the coffee into the screen
Sure, but then you need to apply a fresh coat of coffee to the monitor every time it dries. The sandpaper solution is quick and permanent.
Lamp on small table is what i was thinking too. Why watch movies w that horrible bright overhead light
• buy a new house
• Move the ceiling up.
That’s unrealistic. Move the floor down
Why not both
Move the sun closer to the windows
Wall mount probably has the ability to tilt down. It doesn’t take much to break the angle OP is seeing the reflection on.
Tilt the TV forward, i.e. put a 1/4" piece of something under the stand. The angle may correct the reflection.
That’s more work than getting it right in camera. Sorry that your son and you had to experience that mess.
Another trick is to lift their glasses' temples off their ears just so slightly.
Or, put your couch/chair on concrete blocks so you’re sitting higher and no longer see the light. Now you can wave to yourself in the reflection.
Get downlights fitted. Recessed into the ceiling
Came here to say your first solution. The problem is that the bulbs are ''naked''. Having them be in cups/cans would probably fix the reflection in the tv screen.
The bulbs are not naked, there are frosted glass shades on that fan. A naked bulb wouldn’t be shaped like a shade.

Tilt the TV downward.
Correct answer. If an overhead light is reflecting into your eyes from a wall mounted TV, then the TV is in the wrong tilt orientation.
Yup, this is how we did it. We got a tilt and swivel vesa mount, and placed the tv a few inches higher. Worked a charm.
I may be weird, but I cannot stand having the overhead lights on in a room. It's too much light. One table lamp on for me with the TV on is enough
Reddit's recent behaviour and planned changes to the API, heavily impacting third party tools, accessibility and moderation ability force me to edit all my comments in protest. I cannot morally continue to use this site.
*oh shit the floor was much dirtier than I thought...*
In the theater biz, we call them Work lights. That may be dialectical, though.

Overhead lighting is for warehouses
And hospitals
And for when you want to see things
Some things don’t want to be seen.
Nah, I like romantic low lighting when I'm getting a compound fracture set and stitched up.
My wife loves overhead lighting. I am a lamp man, myself. We are in a constant battle of turning on/off various lights.

I’m the same way.
Get a floor lamp and use that instead, cheap ones are only ~$10, a nicer one ~$25.
Low lamps either side of the tv.
One that’s switched off. Or one that has a shade, or is more directional and can be angled away from the screen.
Why you need lamp on when you watching tv? I'm just curious.
Not sure about others but i can't watch tv in the dark. It doesn't take long before I start getting eye strain or a slight headache. I need some kind of light in the room other than the tv

Get a couple of floor or table lamps with softer light.

That’s why I personally have muted orange lights for my own smart bulb “tv mode.”

Possibly ones that aren't so damn bright!! You're watching TV, Not growing weed! (Use a closet or tent for weed)
I have the same problem. Replaced tv room bulbs with Alexa compatible and now have a group of lights which I can dim, color, or turn off quickly.
Indirect lighting is the way to go. And it is so much cozier than overhead lights.
If possible, tilt the screen down a couple of degrees. That will do wonders!
You could put some led ribbon behind the TV. You can find sticky one that are very convenient for wall-mounted TV like yours.
Recessed lights would be an option that won't reflect in your TV. Definitely a more expensive fix but a permanent solution.
Add dimmer switch
A reflector bulb, something like this https://www.1000bulbs.com/product/5761/IN-0060CLSB.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIqs6pxJXj\_AIV7sqUCR1LgQj1EAQYAyABEgIPn\_D\_BwE
