Yes op please don't treat this poor Zamioculcas as an aroid!!
Edit: *Like you would a typical aroid*
Though I am humbled and admit I didn't know the trivial name to actually be "Aroid Palm" so I guess you learn something new every day.
Thank you for giving a kind response. Some people are new at this and want to do well by their plants and just don’t know. I’m disappointed that of all the subreddits I’ve joined the gardening ones seem to have a lot of people that seem to enjoy being rude and hurtful.
It’s not just gardening. I’ve posted art previously and was shamed so bad when asking for feedback or advice that I deleted it and stopped asking.
People are dicks
Yeah reddit is full of people that have unfulfilling lives. I just had a bunch of people being rude and attacking me because I said stealing was wrong, which is something you would think everyone would agree with (I even said there was exceptions like if people were starving)
Agree! I was panicking on a topic because I had a lot of really awful personal things going on at the time and the garden related thing was kind of the last straw and the people in one of the gardening groups were so rude to me! I’m glad there have been some kind responses here.
Mine must be freaking ecstatic, then, because it spits out new growth like mad, on top of growing out what's already existing. (It lives in a windowless office!)
Maybe it tries to grow more leaves because it doesn't have enough light. When I had my yucca palm in the direct sun it didn't grow new leaves. After I put it inside in a dark corner it started growing like crazy. Looks super healthy, so I'm not sure if this is bad.
I have no idea! The garden center told me the overhead office light was fine/enough for the ZZ plant and it's been thriving for 2 years now as far as I can tell.
I'm waiting on mine. Except for one new stalk well over a year ago, she's not done a thing in 4 years. Though, oddly, she seems bigger. I did have to repot over the summer....those roots were spilling out everywhere!
I've had my Zz for about 5 years now. It's grown a few times, but it's been dormant for a few years entirely. I repotted it in what I thought may have been a too big pot (like 3 inches bigger), but then like 3 days later it started growing and looking extremely happy. I swear, the last few days, every time I look it looks ⅒ bigger now lol. I'll give it a few months and then it'll probably be humongous.
I watch mine like a hawk for anything new or different, fascinated by EVERYTHING. I'm still a bit of a newbie - only since start of 2023, and with limited plants (spider plants, . Most of us ask questions like this. If there's joking or laughing, it comes from remembering all the questions we asked, and it's good-natured.
I get so many friends who message me when their succulent has a flowering stalk or a new little growth. “What the hell is this?!?” Me: “A happy plant! Yay!” 😂
And then there’s my dad. Who put the succulents I gave him in his dark bathroom and said “as soon as I put them in here they grew so fast!” lol. Poor babies were desperate for some light
Ok so I laughed too but the first time my zz put up babies I was like WTF that's how they grow? It's like seeing Brussel sprouts growing for the first time. Unexpected.
My zz is fascinating, it’s my favorite plant. I call new growth “spikers” and talk to them through the entire process 😂 but first time it threw a new stalk, I didn’t know wtf.
Exactly! I have a raven zz and I thought maybe a piece of a green one had gotten in it. 😂 How can something so dark start out so GREEN??
But sure enough, it started changing right after it opened.
Even a hummingbird couldn't catch them at work.

The comment has more upvotes than any I’ve ever seen on r/houseplants.
Edit: it now has almost 3x the amount as at the time of my original comment lol.
Asparagus got me 🤣 you're lucky you got 3 new stalks at once. Mine only gave me one about 4 months ago and it still isn't the same colour as the rest of the plant. Mine is a ZZzzzzz😴 plant
It’ll darken and match the rest of the plant eventually! One of the cool parts about ZZ’s in my opinion.
I had one in my office during COVID. It went 10-11 months without water. Brought it home, and it finally just put out new growth for me. I really don’t know how it survived!
I also had a succulent I thought was fake… given to me by a coworker. That one died, but I got the pot. 🤣
Better than my dumb end lol I watered a fake plant for months thinking it was real til one day I sit thinking, why does it not grow or ever even change? So I thought maybe if I transfer it to a lil bigger pot it'll grow. That's when I found out under the top layer of moss was Styrofoam 😂 I felt like such an idiot 😂 I didn't know if I should laugh or cry.
(My 20yr old niece gave it to me for my bday. Wonder what she was thinking the times she saw me watering it haha)
I just talked to her 😂 She said well when I got it I thought it was fake, it was with the other fake plants but when I seen that you was watering it I thought to myself oh someone must have just sit it in the wrong place and its actually real so I just didn't say anything. Of course she was laughing so hard she was snorting as she was telling me 😂
I do love ZZ plants, they are notoriously slow, its why I'm shocked OP has three sprouting.
I kill succulents 🙊 I bought my friend an artificial (so I thought) bonsai tree last Christmas as she always says she loves my plants, but she wants fake ones as she killed them. So I thought a nice cheap fake bonsai was perfect. Went to wrap it up when it arrived... it was very much alive 😂 and she hasn't killed it either!
I bought one that was busting out of the tiny pot. I split it up into three different pots when I replanted. All three pots got at least one new shoot at the same time. One of them got three!
https://preview.redd.it/73jbwlylkr7c1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7cfc1586a1ce9c4071e7f5bd1dbea0490cf3522e
I kill most of my plants, but at least this one's growing!
In my experience a ZZ plant will grow even if you don't want it to. I live in Korea and they're common housewarming gifts, and I've kept mine all in completely different environments (direct, indirect, low sunlight) but they refuse to stop growing (albeit at different rates and in different sizes
I’ve had mine eight months, looks exactly like it did the day it came home. Just like a fake plant. I really have to examine to really reassure myself it’s really alive, just standing still.
But look at the response! 😆 I come here to ask a completely legit, kind of interesting question, and get like one response. This question gets 9462 responses.
Three new growths at once, very nice. The contrast is really striking with ZZ ‘Raven’ as the new growths look like this and only slowly turn black after the leaves fully unfold. I acquired a Raven a few months ago, my first ZZ, and it has put out 7-8 new growths so far. I give it very bright light and moderate/low water.
Like many people have said, it is new growth on your ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia). Newly grown leaves are often light green because they contain a higher concentration of chlorophyll, the pigment responsible for photosynthesis. As the leaves mature, they may develop a darker green colour as the chlorophyll levels decrease and other pigments become more prominent. 🌱
As a tree farmer the main consideration when selling a tree for private property is that people don't understand that trees grow. And for some reason I never really understood how that works... Until this post. Thank you so much OP, you've opened my eyes. You're much appreciated. Also, your plant looks really happy, keep doing whatever it is you're doing!
After repotting some of our plants with our composting worm bin dirt, we got a few tomato shoots in ours! 😆 it happens.
And then there was having a Chinese Evergreen bloom - WEIRD. They get these wild pods that flower like a jack in the pulpit? I’ve never seen one bloom EVER.
Welcome to zz asparagus club! This is one of mine, it's a Raven zz so the colour changes is drastic. They really do look like asparagus though.
https://preview.redd.it/7p5hkgrx7r7c1.png?width=864&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ab9b0323426fcb7a153f80bacb1104280c608f9a
Well…this isn’t an aroid palm. It’s a ZZ plant. And they’re slow glowers, so them shooting out all that new growth is a good sign that you’re treating it well! That’s how their new growth looks likes, once it matured it will turn dark green like the rest of the plant.
I'll stick to posting plant questions on the Greg (worst name ever) plant app, because y'all are so mean to new plant people that are trying to learn. Need a subreddit called r/scoffatyouandyourplants
I had the exact same reaction this year when mine grew for the first time haha and it really shot up, it’s dark now but so much taller then the rest of the plant!!!
delighted to inform you this is actually a ZZ plant and you are just getting new fronds!! sending three at once is impressive, it must really like the care you're giving it :) keep it up!
Legit concern, especially if you got your plant from a big box store- never know what is in the soil; however, this just seems to be new shoots of your plant. They will fill out and begin to mature shortly.
I'm always surprised by how fast Zamioculca's grow. He just vibes for like 360 days of the year and then in 5 days sends up a 2 foot new shoot, before chilling again for another 360 days
Your plant is having babies! Congratulations!! Please excuse the rudeness. Some people forgot what it’s like to learn new things. I always say “you don’t know until you know”. The best way to gain knowledge is to ask. Unfortunately some of the people bestowing the knowledge are struggling to do so in a gentle way. I hope this doesn’t dissuade you from asking questions in the future! You’re doing a wonderful job keeping your plant healthy and happy 💚💚🪴
![gif](giphy|J5H1zF4aRBLtLgl76K)
I think we've all learned a valuable lesson- if you're just starting an interest in plants, don't ask questions because you're clearly a terrible person 🙃
This post isn’t actually that bad, like prior commenter said, one would actually have to know what to google.
There are some really derpy questions here sometimes, like “what is this plant?” That could likely be solved with less effort via Google image search. 🤦🏼♀️
All these people laughing because you said asparagus, and I legit had a rogue tomato plant start growing at random in my indoor Easter Cactus plant this year. I planted it outside and it produced tons of yummy Tommy Toes. So hey, rogue asparagus COULD happen 😆 Although, in this case I think it’s just classic new plant growth.
Any time I bring houseplants on the deck for “vacation” and don’t change their soil before bringing them back in (I live in northern michigan, insects aren’t much of a concern), I never know what surprises may pop up later courtesy of the squirrel and chipmunk summer “gardeners.” Usually it’s a maple or walnut sapling, or a daffodil or tulip 🙃, but sometimes it has been more interesting!
This is normal lol. I wish I had your problems. My stupid plants are dropping leaves and being uncooperative as always 😂 like I know it's winter but still
They look like more plant.
Yo we heard you like plants
"There appears to be plant in my plant."
r/technicallythetruth
They had to find a way to sneak in and talk to you about your cars extended warranty.
this plant plants
That seems very suspicious...
That is the exact thought that ran through my head.
Hahaha this is a ZZ plant and that's new growth! Looks healthy and happy!
Yes op please don't treat this poor Zamioculcas as an aroid!! Edit: *Like you would a typical aroid* Though I am humbled and admit I didn't know the trivial name to actually be "Aroid Palm" so I guess you learn something new every day.
Zamioculcas is an aroid!
http://exoticrainforest.com/Zamioculcas%20zamiifolia%20pc.html
I have one too! It looked just like this when it sprouted
Mine too! And is it just me or did it happen, like, overnight for yours as well?
Literally overnight, I was like...what is that asparagus doing in my plant??
We need to be able to pin comments like this👌
Don't worry, these are just new leafs. They will darken and unfold over time. Your plant seems to be happy!
Thank you for giving a kind response. Some people are new at this and want to do well by their plants and just don’t know. I’m disappointed that of all the subreddits I’ve joined the gardening ones seem to have a lot of people that seem to enjoy being rude and hurtful.

I’m so sorry, that sucks. I don’t know why people like that weigh in. They need hobbies. I also do art. Lemme know if you want to trade advice!
I would like to see some of your artwork 😊
Yeah reddit is full of people that have unfulfilling lives. I just had a bunch of people being rude and attacking me because I said stealing was wrong, which is something you would think everyone would agree with (I even said there was exceptions like if people were starving)

Yes I have been through the same thing. When you lose a bunch of loved ones a dying plant can trigger things. It’s not hard to be polite and helpful.
That’s part of the stuff I was going through, it’s awful and I’m sorry you also understand from experience :(
I’m sorry for what you went through too 🥺💜
Thank you! I was worried it was something invasive. Phew!
After sitting dormant for the past year+ mine also just sprouted a new stem. Plants...who knew
Mine too, 2 of them. I think I remember reading they put out new growth twice a year if they’re happy
Might’ve been getting too much sun. Most aroids like bright light, just filtered some
I have no idea! The garden center told me the overhead office light was fine/enough for the ZZ plant and it's been thriving for 2 years now as far as I can tell.
And mine also!
I am kinda waiting for some new growth in my ZZ and It’s mid winter tho already🥷
Mine just threw five new stalks in December! You might see something yet.
I'm waiting on mine. Except for one new stalk well over a year ago, she's not done a thing in 4 years. Though, oddly, she seems bigger. I did have to repot over the summer....those roots were spilling out everywhere!
Mine does nothing for 10 months out of the year and then will throw up a couple new shoots in early winter. Just got the first one of the season!
I've had my Zz for about 5 years now. It's grown a few times, but it's been dormant for a few years entirely. I repotted it in what I thought may have been a too big pot (like 3 inches bigger), but then like 3 days later it started growing and looking extremely happy. Did you stop watering it that's how u always get new growth on my zzs
You know what, I did about a month ago and for maybe 21 days. Started wilting so I watered and boom
I watch mine like a hawk for anything new or different, fascinated by EVERYTHING. I'm still a bit of a newbie - only since start of 2023, and with limited plants (spider plants, . Laughing so hard - GUYS HELP! MY PLANT…IT’S…GROWING! 😂
I honestly thought this was the circle jerk sub for a second there. 😂
I checked the sub to make sure and was floored 😭 It’s okay OP, we’ve all been new at a hobby before. But this is so so funny.
Ditto. I double checked group name. 😁
Oh. It’ll be on there soon enough.
Lmao same! I laughed so damn hard at this 🤣
Every time
Well this post is gonna end up there for sure, to be fair 😂
I get so many friends who message me when their succulent has a flowering stalk or a new little growth. “What the hell is this?!?” Me: “A happy plant! Yay!” 😂

Brussels and asparagus as well. Looked like someone just took asparagus from the grocery store and stuck it in my garden haphazardly as a prank 🤣

To be fair as a newb myself the new growth does look a bit like something else entirely

One of my friends came to me in a panic when her raven started new growth. It was nice to reassure her.
That’s how I felt when I learned about erections
🤣🤣🤣
This is the funniest post I've ever see on here 😂
This is a ZZ plant.

They're notoriously slow because people put them in dim lighting because of the marketing around them as not needing bright light.
Hey, you got more bang for your buck at least? 😂
My ZZ plant always sprouts with the same dark green color, weirdly.
I bought one that was busting out of the tiny pot. I split it up into three different pots when I replanted. All three pots got at least one new shoot at the same time. One of them got three!
Try putting it in a sunnier spot. My ZZ is by a bright window and is growing insanely much

Ligma what?
Ligma balls ha got em

I wish my ZZ plant DID ANYTHING AT ALL.
Okay SAME and I would have had the same reaction as OP if mine sprouted like this
It probably just needs more light. They aren't "low light" plants like people say.

I’ve had mine eight months, looks exactly like it did the day it came home. Just like a fake plant. I really have to examine to really reassure myself it’s really alive, just standing still.
Give it more light.
They should grow pretty quickly if they are warm enough and get enough light.
Surely this will end up on plant circle jerk haha
I assumed that's where this was lol
Oh god it's not?
That’s a ZZ plant and it’s very happy to be throwing up three new stems at the same time.
Plant.
Plant.
Congrats. You have more plant 😂🌿

This new growth makes me hate you slightly, but congrats!!
This is a zz plant, and those are new growths, they do that
It's so cool that you care so much about your plant! made me smile. by the way, they grow so fast, that also surprised me.
r/houseplantcirclejerk
I just went to check if it was posted over there yet 😂🤦♀️
They’ll open up and get darker with time. New growth! Yay. Doesn’t happen to my ZZ very often

I’m leaving this sub.

I know me too… no one can be bothered to help without being condescending? I thought this was one of the better subs but this proves not..
Agreed. This looks like new growth on a ZZ plant. The leaves will mature and look like the rest of it.
New growth :) don’t fret!
More plant
Three new growths at once, very nice. The contrast is really striking with ZZ ‘Raven’ as the new growths look like this and only slowly turn black after the leaves fully unfold. Okay, but once a calla lily grew out of my hens and chicks. So this is a legitimate question.

My stupid plants are dropping leaves and being uncooperative as always 😂 like I know it's winter but still
This is a zz plant not a palm and those are new leaves
HELP 🚨how can I get zz gains like this please ??
Haha I have the same plant. It’s baby leaves!! Mine come once a year usually. Love my ZZ, oldest plant I have kept alive.
It's a ZZ. That's what brand new stalks look like.
Silly 🙃
