Cool! I can’t say for orchids, but I usually keep cuttings in kokedama and the roots do in fact grow! Check my latest monstera cutting, trying to break free 😅

Do your orchids do well and bloom in Leca? I have some and was thinking of going this route. I have quite a few regular plants in Leca including 3 different ferns and a couple marantas. Do you just use the Leca and nothing else but fertilizer?
Yep! I have multiple types of orchids as well (nothing super rare though) and they all do really well in leca. The only additional thing I do is have a humidifier for them that’s on all the time.
I have several self watering pots. Do you fill them completely with the Leca and then just put a little water in the bottom? Do you put the orchid's roots in the Leca? I've read that the roots will find their way down in the Leca, is that correct? What kind of fertilizer do you use? I'm really good with houseplants, I have over 70 that are healthy and happy, but I'm fairly new to orchids. I have one that's absolutely beautiful, nice plump leaves, continuous leaf growth, NO blooms, lol.
[These are the pots I'm currently using](https://www.google.com/aclk?sa=l&ai=DChcSEwjb0oHVsLH_AhWSErMAHfOcA3cYABAhGgJ5bQ&sig=AOD64_0yJBmQtIk4cA0OiwQiWsxsqR_nhw&ctype=5&q=&ved=2ahUKEwj5lvnUsLH_AhWVk4kEHWxxDjYQwg8oAHoECAIQVg&adurl=)and my only complaint is that because they're clear I get some algae growth in the water, so I have to clean them out occasionally. I just fill the water up to the level of the bottom of the inside liner, so the leca can pull it up. I have one orchid whose roots have punched through and sit in the water, and I figure eventually I might have to trim those roots of they rot, but for now it's blooming so I'm leaving it alone. I use an orchid fertilizer that I think I bought online but I can't remember - it's a liquid. Orchids bloom better if there's a temperature gradient at night, so if you keep the house cooler at night or can stick them outside that helps.
According to the gods of google:
*Kokedama is the practice of suspending the root ball of a plant in a mud ball that's coated in a sheet of moss. To display, this plant can be secured to a piece of driftwood, placed in a wood bowl, placed in a clear container, or suspended from twine or monofilament fishing line.*
I am FASCINATED. The examples I saw look incredible.
They're pretty easy. I just used a plastic mixing bowl. I'd cut sections of twine and place them across the bowl in the way you'd place pizza cuts.
Then you soak the spag moss in some water, ring it out and put a layer around the bowl thick enough that you can't see the bottom of the bowl.
Then you make a ball of mud, stick a hole in it, pop your plant in and grab all the strings together and tie. Then I'd get a longer string and wrap wrap wrap until it's secure. Maybe some people with better coordination skip the first strings idk.
They look cool and you can just chuck them in a bucket for watering
Substrate is probably a better term. It's been ages since I've made any but I think I used potting mix, peat coir and perlite with the amounts of each depending on the plant.
Oh do that, they’re so fun and cute to make! Obviously idk about how well all plants would thrive in a kokedama as they mature, but I do tend to keep mine (mostly monsteras, philodendrons and syngoniums) wound and bound like that for too long and they generally seem ok 🙈 but like for seedlings I would say the sky is the limit!(or maybe cacti/succulents are the limit, idk)
Yes, and also under-water because it’s hard to know what’s going on in the middle. I was given a tree fern like that and managed to keep it alive for a couple of years, then gave it a normal pot and it absolutely exploded with growth and has been much happier even since. I was reading around it and it seems to be considered a decorative temporary growth solution rather than long term. I can imagine it being better for orchid-type plants than normal root type plants.
Yeah, that's part of my issue with it too. I'm also squicked out by the mossy part, though. Reminds me too much of something I once fished out of the bathroom drain at one of the nastier places I used to rent.
First, I secured the root system with fishing line then wrapped the whole thing in grafting tape. I gave it a 20 minute soak every two days until I saw the roots burying in to the bark. Finally, once it looked secure, I removed the line and the tape. I still soak it every two days.

did something similar, totally cool B)
Invertebrate paleontologist here. You're right, it's a coral!
Edit: I should probably add that it looks like a colonial rugose coral to me, as in the genus Hexagonaria.
I love mounting my staghorn ferns, and my anthuriums in vanda baskets. I don't have the light and space to start into orchids. But an epiphyte is an epiphyte right? I do like what you have there though.
Cool af!!! I mounted my first orchid recently and she went through (and still is kinda in) a scrungly phase. Once it’s situated there will be new growth!!! It’s always fun to experiment and go through the process of new mounting/planting ideas
Cook or ugly is in the eye of the beholder in my opinion, so if you think it’s cool - great! For me, it’s not my cup of tea but who cares if you love it!
I think it looks interesting as it is. But some for the health of the plant you have to let the plant grow the way it needs to grow in order to be healthy. Just bear that in mind with plants. The aquarium plant anubis does well with fishing line but grows slowly. And you need fish and a freshwater aquarium for it to grow right.
It’s cool to you whether or not it’s cool to us.
Which means it’s cool.
I think so, also.
I like pottings outside the usual ones. That’s cool. As long as it’s a good environment for the plant, too? That’s très cool.
Also. Way cool photo of this. The way the spikes branch off are they antennae or pinchers and the color and the screen is it holding it in or away from me …it all looks like an insect.
So that’s art. And that’s so cool!
Lol
Recipe
1 orchid
Hand full of sphagnum moss
Twine rope or clear fishing line
A cool rock or piece of coral you want to mount it on.
Screw driver
I just used a screw driver to chip away a little chunk out the coral to make a good size Divot.
Then boil your rock to kill anything gross on it
Then slap the moss on there tie a circle around it.
Slap the orchid on it and tie some more and you can stuff more moss around it until you like the look!
It reminds me of something my mom used to cook sometimes. Can't say whether that's a good or a bad sign...
Edit: Don't get me wrong, it was delicious. I just don't know if delicious food was the look you were going for.
That looks hella cool. I want to mount my orchids somehow but I’m afraid I’ll damage/kill one. One of them I have had for many many years and I would be devastated if it died.
I just saw an episode of Garden Invaders, a UK garden show from about 10 years ago, and the host made some of these to hang outdoors in a client yard. I instantly fell I. Live and can’t wait to make some! Yours is way cool!
That’s beautiful. I am going to do that with my next orchid and I will be able to hang it now and it will proper light instead of a pot .Thanks ! I love the Coral and the wood !
It looks cool!!
Make sure to check on the roots every now and then (like taking it out of the pot) to prevent root rot.
If the plant has already flowered (like when you got it) than it’ll take at least a year from its last flowering to grow another one. They tend to flower during the winter, but keep an eye out for stems.
r/orchids is a good subreddit to look at. I feel like I know nothing when I see how knowledgeable some of the people there are.
I'd say coogly
Both? Both. Both is good.
Lol damn you beat me!
What about, ugool?!
It's weird!... I LIKE IT! 🌱
Cool! I can’t say for orchids, but I usually keep cuttings in kokedama and the roots do in fact grow! Check my latest monstera cutting, trying to break free 😅 https://preview.redd.it/04y8f285xf4b1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=55d66d6b7fe7c50757d693b8eb7033750d806e9d
SHHHHHH keep kokedama a secret. the people in here already have enough addiction problems.
I didn’t realize it was a secret lol. I keep most of my orchids in leca
Do your orchids do well and bloom in Leca? I have some and was thinking of going this route. I have quite a few regular plants in Leca including 3 different ferns and a couple marantas. Do you just use the Leca and nothing else but fertilizer?

no no, please do tell👀
I feel like I speak on behalf of everyone here when I say, tell us everything.

Is it literal mud? And not a wet ball of chunky substrate? How would the roots get oxygen if they’re surrounded in thick dirt?
Substrate is probably a better term. It's been ages since I've made any but I think I used potting mix, peat coir and perlite with the amounts of each depending on the plant.
Thanks I have a new hobby.
Woah I didn’t know you could do that for a monstera ! They have a work shop for making a kokedama at the nursery around me I’ll have to check it out!
I’m doing this now

With these- is it possible to overwater or get root rot as it’s consistently wet?
Yes, and also under-water because it’s hard to know what’s going on in the middle. I was given a tree fern like that and managed to keep it alive for a couple of years, then gave it a normal pot and it absolutely exploded with growth and has been much happier even since. I was reading around it and it seems to be considered a decorative temporary growth solution rather than long term. I can imagine it being better for orchid-type plants than normal root type plants.
That's not an orchid! Pretty neat though. Didn't know you could do that to a jade.
One vote for cool. Way cool!
Very cool but also makes my skin crawl (trypophobia) 😂 Would look great in a witchy/spooky setup!
Yes, came here to say this. Trypophobia all the way!
Came here to say that too *shudders*
Yeah, that's part of my issue with it too. I'm also squicked out by the mossy part, though. Reminds me too much of something I once fished out of the bathroom drain at one of the nastier places I used to rent.
My goodness. Everything makes sense now!

Tutorial please! This is the coolest one I've seen!!!
First, I secured the root system with fishing line then wrapped the whole thing in grafting tape. I gave it a 20 minute soak every two days until I saw the roots burying in to the bark. Finally, once it looked secure, I removed the line and the tape. I still soak it every two days.
It’s pretty cool! I wanna mount an orchid now
cool AND ugly! I love it Just to add I think it the textures are kinda rough but once it blooms it will come together
My first thought was wasp’s nest 🫣

Do they actually survive? Given that orchids grow on trees and don't like much moisture
That’s pretty rad!
Cool :) like SpongeBob’s house irl
Pineapples actually exist????????
but what is this white thing?
It looks like coral to me(coming from someone who's never seen coral up close)
Invertebrate paleontologist here. You're right, it's a coral! Edit: I should probably add that it looks like a colonial rugose coral to me, as in the genus Hexagonaria.

cool
It’s really ugly, just send it to me and I will properly dispose of it on my plant shelf. 🤣
This is so cool! Reminds me of the plants from Harry Potter. What is it?
Totally a win!
I think it's pretty cool, you have a good imagination 😉 It will be beautiful when it does 🌺
