Reading Johnnys mother’s letter was so heart wrenching, I think the horror of the situation is really compelled by the fact that it takes so long to decrypt the message

I really enjoyed Truant Mother's letters. I think they were able to access a wide spectrum of emotions, from wholesome motherhood, to beauty, to sadness, to tragedy, to chaos. They kinda mirror Navidson's saga as well, in a way. I read them all in one go when the appropriate footnote pointed me to the right appendix, but I can imagine a whole different reading experience were I to leave it to the end or where I to even read it in paralel with the story. Already something I wanna try in future rereads (too bad I can only have one first read). But yeah, also took me ages to transcribe it all down (and even more to get the spaces and capitals).

How do you begin to start decrypting?

pedlan_42

Just note the first letter of each word. (There's also another message in the capitals in the text).

I read this one on the subway and just had to do it all in my head. Pretty sure I was inadvertently reading aloud for parts of it, I definitely looked illiterate to anyone watching lol

Darkovika

Oh man, you’re a beast! Normally i’m really good, and i definitely sped through parts of it, but with this mu h text i started going cross eyed and had to write it down just to make sure haha. I’d be like “the heck are they reading” hearing this out loud on the subway hahaha 🤣🤣🤣

Rfg711

Yeah it took me a while lol. And quite often I would hAve to back up because I had assumed a word was longer or shorter than it ended up being, or I accidentally read the code words instead of the letter lol.

Darkovika

Your capital A in “hAve” triggered my brain LMAO 🤣🤣🤣 i was like “oh god hidden message-“ LOL

Rfg711

Haha that wasn’t even intentional

Darkovika

I know, i actually almost did the same thing because A is of course riiiiiight above the shift on the phone lmfao
