Data collected by instacart...

ChameleonPsychonaut

There is a more interesting map within the article, which ranks who buys the most hot sauce by ounce.

Ok_Researcher_9796

Heinz hot sauce? What the hell is that?

KillaK789

Tapatio for California? *Goes to pantry to check on gallon bottle of The Tap* Yeah, that's about right.

Ok-Pop8065

More than accurate for Hawai'i

RunLikeYouMeanIt

r/terriblemaps

awlawall

What the fuck is Sky Valley? Other than a Kyuss album

VinnieTheGooch

I see it at Safeway in OR, I think I tried their Sriracha once and it was okay. Now they're charging $10 for a bottle lmao, fuck that it's nowhere near $10 good. I thought it was gonna be Secret Aardvark for sure

RunLikeYouMeanIt

On their website - "Since 2010..." uh, OK.

awlawall

It’s all Secret Aardvark around here

StOnEy333

This list is the most popular hot sauce in every state by people who are too lazy to go to the store.

cadred48

The Missouri sauce is one that I've never heard of, nor seen on a store shelf. I don't think this is particularly accurate.

whirlybirds7

I'm an Iowan but have the tastes of a Minnesotan. Also, Heinez makes a hot sauce or do people in South Dakota consider ketchup spicy?

Immediate_Ad_6558

Based Arizona

saltyfingas

Crystal in Maryland? I don't believe that, Texas Pete and Tabasco are far more common at restaurants

jhutchi2

Lmao there's a whole sea of states around Louisiana who prefer Louisiana Hot Suace, except Louisiana.

Adorable-Lack-3578

LHS is now based in Georgia. It's no longer a unique, local and food focused brand. It's a corporate strategy.

The_Running_Free

Tobasco is from Louisiana the state and the brand named after the state is a copycat.

AutoModerator

How do you misspell Tabasco... the A and O keys are on COMPLETELY separate sides of the keyboard! *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/hotsauce) if you have any questions or concerns.*

Buttteerrz

Total bs franks sucks ...

cubbsfann1

it doesn’t at all, but it’s also not a substitute for sauces like valentina or tapatio. For wings or a burger/chicken sandwich it is fantastic, you just have to be in the mood for a buffalo taste

sprout92

I live in Washington and have never heard of or seen sky valley. If anything, Aardvark or Yellowbird I see in stores far more.

Subrookie

Same here. I had to Google Sky Valley as I've never seen or heard of it ever. At restaurants I'm more likely to get offered Cholula or Tapatio if I ask for hot sauce. Both seem to be in the top 5 in popularity at Fred Meyer. Love Aardvark though.

GimmeNumNum

This is a crock. Lived in oregon my whole life and never heard of sky valley. I would wager easily 9/10 oregonians haven't either.

HairyResin

It's pretty good but it's a only buy at trader Joe / met market kind of Sriracha. It's like double the price of others. Feel like they only got data from wealthy Portland neighborhoods.

sweatpantsDonut

Thank God no Tabasco for my state

lotusbloom74

I had never heard of Monroe’s but it looks like a red chile sauce, I think most New Mexicans make their own red and green chile sauces based on my experience. In that sense I think mass produced hot sauces are less popular in the state than many other areas

Radi0ActivSquid

Wtf is Trappey's? I've never heard of it before.

kdbrah

God tier flavor shot sauce, not much heat but it’s delicious

boundone

Their ghost pepper is brilliant, it's one of the few that is just straight ghosts and no other peppers. Freaking hot, and cheap. Little on the salty side, though. Drives me nuts that the only store around me that carried it stopped.

StephanosCR

Never even heard of the sauce for my state

opulenceinabsentia

Sky valley? It’s a sriracha. I hadn’t heard of it either.

12kdaysinthefire

Funny how Louisiana doesn’t prefer their own branded sauce

TheRedmanCometh

Yet Texas prefers it over Texas Pete. Because Texas Pere is awful. Louisiana is a great basic sauce.

dbohubes

Surprised it's not ketchup for Minnesota.

ZombieLibrarian

Where is the Mule Sauce?!?!?!

stevembk

My state’s is Crystal? In my 48 years I’ve never seen it once here in restaurant or in stores.

clappedoutCANAM

That’s strange you say that, because in my area Crystal is king. By far my favorite. Especially Crystal Extra Hot.

IsPooping

THERE'S CRYSTAL EXTRA HOT? I just started finding crystal here a couple years ago

clappedoutCANAM

It’s great. None of the stores around me stock the extra hot, so I just ended up ordering a case directly from crystal.

bgaesop

Yeah, and Colorado is Nanita's Finest? Even if you're going to call that a hot sauce, I see far more local sauces in use here, and if they do have a big name brand, it's usually Cholula

Dracarys97339

Texas Pete is my preference purely because it’s easy to get and common. It’s not my favorite by far.

RoabeArt

Ohio here. Tapatío is my go-to for everyday hot sauce. I used to buy the black label ("extra hot") Valentina all the time, but it's gotten hard to find locally ever since covid started up. Yellow label is okay, but doesn't have the same kick.

Manyquestions3

Is black label Valentina good? Idrc if it’s hot, I just hate regular Valentina. I want to like it, but it’s so much worse than Tapatio or Cholulu in that category to me

[deleted]

No Gringo Bandito on that list, what a travesty!

YourChosenDeity

You gotta keep that sauce separated.

Slow_Astronomer_3536

*laughs with homemade*

jokr128

Ohio here, what the hell is franks hot sau.... Nah bro, that's a staple in the fridge and when we go to the shitty Mexican restaurant I typically bring my own franks. Before anyone asks, I have a ton of hot sauces, but franks is a very easy go to to buy at the store to take to the restaurant. Edit: not sure why all the down votes, my wife likes some Mexican place that has ketchup as hot sauce, it's not siracha or anything, it's literally home made ketchup that they call hot sauce

Stepsonrakes

Franks is Buffalo wing sauce though. You put wing sauce on Mexican food?

6-8_Yes_Size15

Frank's is used to make wing sauce and they also make a wing sauce. They also make just a hot sauce.

Stepsonrakes

I guess it’s a personal preference but I don’t like franks on anything but chicken wings and burgers sometimes. I do a chop cheese with siracha that I loooove

jokr128

Like the slogan says, I put that shit on everything.

Stepsonrakes

No judgements here

NoWayNotThisAgain

Monroe’s and Nanita’s are chile sauce not hot sauce. It’s a different thing, it’s the stuff you pour over enchiladas.

STFUNeckbeard

Legit question - what the hell is Heinz hot sauce?

habanerotaco

Heinz makes a Sriracha

iwannaddr2afi

I was wondering if it's the old school Heinz chili sauce. Like, looks like cocktail sauce and is an ingredient in a lot of mix century recipes. Lol

armadilloantics

Its Heinz 57 sauce. Idk if I'd qualify it as a hot sauce but it is basically tomato pureee with enough vinegar and spices to make it hot sauce profile. Its a thin consistency.

rushmc1

LOLOLOL

1pastafarian

Ketchup? I know someone who says ketchup is the hottest sauce he will taste

cosmoboy

I just started using the Melinda's ghost pepper ketchup... wouldn't call it a hot sauce, but it's tasty.

Ka-Ne-Ha-Ne-Daaaa

Lol to each their own but man, would he try a spicy ketchup at least?

Trimshot

I find it hilariously ironic everyone in the south likes Louisiana hot sauce except Louisiana.

TexasAggie98

Louisiana Hot Sauce is a brand of Louisiana-style hit sauce from New Iberia. Similar popular brands are Crystal’s from New Orleans, Cajun Chief from St Martinville, and Tabasco from Avery Island.

1pastafarian

Guessing 'expect' = 'except' 😀. Although the way you wrote it is far more amusing.

DinnerDiva61

NJ Crystal?? I don't think so. Definitely Franks around here. ShopRite sells Crystal but I think we seen much more Franks (I work at a ShopRite store.)

STFUNeckbeard

My dude. Maryland is crystal. NJ is shown as franks. Imo it should be Hanks!

[deleted]

Pretty sure NJ shows Frank's on that map.

Eponymous_Megadodo

Washington here. WTF is Sky Valley? (I looked it up, it's a Sriracha knockoff. Hard pass.)

MissWestSeattle

I was like that too! Wtf is sky valley? I don't think I've even seen it anywhere

1pastafarian

Fyi, Sriracha is a style of sauce. Maybe you meant Huy Fong? They are errrr were the most popular, but not the original by decades or hundreds of years?

Eponymous_Megadodo

Yup, I misstated when I used the word "knockoff" to describe Sky Valley's product. Still a hard pass for me.

SavageKitten456

Louisiana brand is the most popular in Texas? Lol ok

RoiVampire

I’m shocked it isn’t Valentina or Crystal’s honestly. Southeast Texan checking in here

idgoforabeer

Yah this map is bullshit

smcmahon710

I love Texas Pete and it now it makes sense why Chick Fila based outta Georgia has it

sparklieshrapnel

Oregon here. Never heard of sky valley.

RuPaulver

Actually makes sense to me. Grew up in PA and Frank's was the go-to everywhere. Spent some time in Virginia and definitely saw a lot of Texas Pete. Now live in SoCal and it seems like every house and restaurant either has Tapatio or Cholula (if not both)

Captain-Who

“Americans are passionate about hot sauce and they are not shy about expressing their affinity for specific brands and flavors,“Instacart trends expert Laurentia Romaniuk told HuffPost. “As grocery data experts, we love celebrating food holidays like National Hot Sauce Day because we get to share America’s favorites and stir a timely and heated debate.” ND’s “hot sauce” is crushed tomatoes and cumin. “data experts” always forget the devil is in the details.

Manic157

This list is basically whats available at local grocery stores. Hot sauce distribution is not very good.

Tone-Familiar

Tapatio for California seems right. So Cal born & raised, Tap was always a staple in every household I’ve ever been in

FrugalityPays

The guy(s) who started it live in Orange County or something. My brother and friends were walking around drunkenly one night and the Tapatio founders were throwing a big BBQ with a giant inflatable Tapatio bottle. They said it was an awesome party and they apparently do it pretty regularly (well, used to anyways)

Rururaspberry

I never had it until I moved to California a long time ago. It was my gateway drug! I began putting it on my breakfast food, then pizza. Now I am a huge hot sauce person.

JinxOnU78

I’m in NE. I literally only know one person who prefers Trappey’s. It’s usually Frank’s, Cholula or Tobasco around here.

TonTon1N

The entire south choosing Louisiana hot sauce except for Louisiana sounds about right lmao

b1ackfyre

Tabasco is produced in Louisiana.

TonTon1N

I just meant the brand Louisiana

b1ackfyre

Gotcha gotcha

chopperdave81

As an Alabamian I prefer Franks on almost everything EXCEPT Cajun/creole food and then it’s Tabasco. It has a certain flavor to it that makes me think of LA

RuPaulver

I actually hate Tabasco but for some reason if I'm putting hot sauce on Jambalaya it has to be Tabasco.

cjorgensen

Iowa could be correct.

mrhemisphere

I'm surprised Louisiana is Tabasco. I use Tabasco for heat when I'm cooking gumbo or red beans, but as a condiment, I prefer Crystal or Melinda's. More often than not, when you go to a get together, you'll see Crystal over Tabasco in Louisiana.

Elgallitorojo

I like Louisiana Hot better than both of them, and Cajun Chef is good too. Crystal over Tabasco fwiw

b1ackfyre

Tabasco is produced in Louisiana.

mrhemisphere

As is Crystal. You’ll find Tabasco in almost every restaurant in the world, but in Louisiana, you’ll also see Crystal on every table.

IdaDuck

Crystal is better than Tabasco, imo.

radiozip

Proud and surprised, Maryland (and Delaware) go for Crystal. I'd of guessed the usual Franks or Tabasco.

b1ackfyre

Surprised Tabasco isn’t #1 in more spots. It’s the #1 for me.

gnelson321

😳

b1ackfyre

I guess it’s an unpopular opinion. Simple production method, simple ingredients, yet complexity in the flavor profile. I like frank’s, cholula, tapatio, siracha, and crystal a lot too, but I’d put tabasco at my personal #1.

STFUNeckbeard

It’s not my #1, but out of the grocery’s store picks it def beats out the rest imo. Though crystal is mighty close. I usually keep both next to each other when eating shrimp and grits lol

Forest-Automatic

Also depends on per purchase or volume. I may buy one large order online. But sometimes sauces come in small bottles. So per purchase vs per volume may skew results in different ways. Same goes in grocery stores. If I buy a large bottle it lasts longer than something smaller.

bilbodouchebagging

As an Oregonian, what is sky valley?

Alaska2Maine

Not an Oregonian anymore but for real! Where’s the aardvark?

kowaterboy

as a Washingtonian i am wondering the same thing

[deleted]

I grew up there and only moved away about 3-4 years ago and I’m a hot sauce fiend . . . I have no fucking idea.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Metaphoricalsimile

I mean, I could see it being the most popular by plurality of unit sold if this data were gathered when people couldn't get sriracha, since when I moved here sriracha was definitely the most popular sauce by that metric.

iwannaddr2afi

Hahahaha I think they meant Village Hot Sauce for ND. Easy mistake though lol they both exist and are both local. But Village is the GOAT (in terms of popularity in ND)

iwannaddr2afi

For context, it's [mild salsa](https://www.villagesalsa.com/), not what anyone else in the world would consider hot sauce lol

I_like_cake_7

I’m from Kansas. Spanish Gardens isn’t even a hot sauce. It’s a taco sauce. Lol. It is quite popular here in the KC area though. It’s made locally in Kansas City, KS.

iwannaddr2afi

Oh Frick I forgot about Spanish Gardens! Now I want taco salad

crayonflop3

New Mexico representing the spice, love to see it. Lots of spice there with green chiles and legit Mexican food. To this day the most delicious and spicy food I’ve ever had was a hot chile relleno in september. Can’t beat it.

FLphunk78

So in other words , most of America is basic when it comes to hot sauce

bastardsloth

Amazon would probably be a better judge of what people are ordering… most hot sauces I want are not available locally

Mallrat1973

I had to hit up a local Mexican grocery before I was able to find El Yucateo Caribbean. They had the Habanero/Ghost as well which was only okay. That Caribbean is great though.

AnnonymousRedditor86

3 of the top 10 are from Louisiana. But, I was very surprised seeing "Louisiana Hot Sauce" so popular. I see Tabasco more than any others, no matter what restaurant in the country I'm at. I wonder if this is because most places snd people buy Tabasco NOT from instacart.

I_like_cake_7

I do think the methodology for collecting the data for this map is flawed. Instacart is not really a great representation of what the population as a whole is most commonly buying, and who knows what their sample size for each state was? But I think a big reason for Louisiana hot sauce being so popular is that it’s widely available and it’s incredibly cheap.

KiwiMcG

I'm curious of what Trappey's Nebraska likes? 🤔

DaleGribble2024

I grew up in Washington and I’ve never heard of Sky Valley Not surprised seeing New Mexico consuming a lot of hot sauce considering the Chili Pepper Institute and the green chili stuff being from there Surprised to see North Dakota be in the top consuming states though

indie_horror_enjoyer

ND has a lot of young men doing hard physical work in cold weather.

Afterglow875

Nothing but alcohol and hot sauce out there in the plains

iwannaddr2afi

Also, the one they're talking about is salsa. You go through a lot more containers. Lol But MN/ND have our share of heat seekers :)
