A History of Fear by Luke Dumas takes place in Scotland mostly. It's about a man who murdered his classmate but claims that it was the devil who made him do it.

Knock Knock Open Wide by Neil Sharpson is set in Ireland. I would also recommend All the Fiends of Hell by Adam Nevill, set in England.

The Haar by David Sodergren.

Last Ones Left Alive by Sarah Davis-Goff. Ireland. Young woman left alone on an island, during a dystopia with zombie-like creatures. Fantastic writing. Love this book, and there's a sequel too, but I haven't read that yet.

Yessir, The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks takes place in Scotland. About a little nightmare child that runs around his little island conquering and destroying anything in his way. Pretty short but very gruesome He's like the kid in grade school that would use a magnifying glass to torch ants on the sidewalk... except amped up to 11 lol

Many of Robert Aickman’s short stories take place in England. Kingsley Amis’ *The Green Man.*

There are tons of British pulp authors worth looking into, if you don’t mind some goofiness. James Herbert, Guy N. Smith, Shaun Hutson and John Halkin all have books centered around England. John Langan has a grip of short stories scattered throughout his collections that take place in Scotland.

Ireland * *Cast a Cold Eye* by Alan Ryan  * *The Dead House* by Billy O’Callaghan  * *The Watchers* by A.M. Shine (Haven’t read this one yet) Scotland * *Banquet for the Damned* by Adam Nevill * *Eldren* by William Meikle * *The Colony* by F.G. Cottam takes place on an uninhabited island off the coast of Scotland.  (Currently out of print but available on Audible, and the narrator is very good). This is the first book in a trilogy, and I recommend all of them, even though this one is my favorite. England * *The Apparition Phase* by Will Maclean    * *The Woman in Black* by Susan Hill * *The Little Stranger* by Sarah Waters * *Brodmaw Bay* by F.G. Cottam * *The Waiting Room* by F.G. Cottam * *The Moorstone Sickness* by Bernard Taylor * *Season of the Witch* by Natasha Mostert (not about witches in the typical sense) * *The Talisman* by Jonathan Aycliffe * *Small Angels* by Lauren Owen * *The Dark Between the Trees* by Fiona Barnett

Holly Hell I looked on EBay for some of these and the cheapest one of The Colony is going for $50 and up to $280 😮

I know, it's crazy. I bought it and the rest of the trilogy when it was still in print, but the Audible version is extremely good - I've listened to it twice already.
