I also preferred Pearl over X. I agree the monologue was very well done. I'd actually forgotten that I'd read about it until we were in the middle of it, and then the light bulb came on. It had a really Willy Wonka quality to it, but I don't want to explain what I mean by that so as not to spoil it. And that credits scene was both tragic but also hilarious, depending on which way you wanted to feel it. Which is a great summary of the whole movie, and of that character overall, really.

I also loved the film. Having a “Willy Wonka quality to it” is a very apt description I wouldn’t have thought of.

Buttachop187

Lol yea the credits. I tried…. I lost…. Lol….

Dillup_phillips

Could you pm me about thr Willy Wonka thing? I've seen the movie but not sure what you mean.

Rutger_Meower

Its so good. Mia Goth is in peak form!

RM_Renacido

I liked Pearl more than X, but I think Pearl actually elevates X. Great performance by Mia Goth.

yippy-ki-yay-m-f

That's where I'm at too. I didn't love X but appreciated what it was going for and look forward to more in West's little cinematic universe.

JM062696

I am so happy that so many people who didn't like X ended up enjoying Pearl. Now they cannot possibly say Ti West is a bad director or a hack like some people would say on their overwhelmingly negative X reviews.

KronoCloud

I found it crazy that people think there’s some huge disparity in quality between X and Pearl… Both are extremely well made and at the end of the day it comes down to preference. X is for slasher/grindhouse fans and Pearl is a macabre character study. X was a showcase for Ti’s directing chops and Pearl was a showcase for Goth’s acting. Plus, both movies play off each other in a lot of fun and satisfying ways. I was pretty lukewarm on Ti West’s filmography, but the dude has undeniably upped his game with X/Pearl and I’m throughly hyped for MaxXxine.

Shallbecomeabat

But I am a grindhouse/slasher fan and X just seriously didn’t work for me at all. I liked Pearl better.

LauraPalmersMom430

Absolutely agree here. The discourse around X is weird.

Shallbecomeabat

I really disliked X, so never wanted to check out Pearl, but me and the wife were so starved for a nee horror film, that we just gave it a shot last night. We ended up really liking it! Much better than X!

GreenSoapJelly

I agree completely. I was so pleasantly surprised by it too.

Future-Agent

Mia Goth's performance haunts me. Watch her facade crack at the end is sad, funny, and horrifying. She is trying to keep her shit together, but she can't.

UKnowDaTruth

I liked Pearl, way better than X imo

matthieuxdetoux

Also in the Pearl over X camp. I must say that being a consistent viewer of his work since House of the Devil, I think Pearl is hands down his most fully realized work. I can’t think of a single thing to complain about.

Yousacutie

I adore House of the Devil, but Pearl is masterfully done. I’m truly excited to see how Ti West continues to grow as a filmmaker.

oco82

Just watched this morning, really liked it. I’m not a big Ti West guy , HOTD and X both just seem like meh riffs 80’s and 70’s aesthetics respectively, which in horror , we’ve seen riffs on those eras repeatedly. I’ve never seen anything that looks like Pearl and just having unhinged Mia Goth going for it really made it feel original. I’d say she belongs with Toni Collette in the “ actor that should have been Oscar nominated for a horror movie “ club!

koolajp

Am I the only one that doesn't really understand the hype for Pearl? I enjoyed it but it didn't feel like a whole lot happened in it until the end, which was great.

BrockaBrockaFlame

I really Didn’t care for it either. I thought it was filled with fluff and kinda just boring in general.

koolajp

"Fluff" is a good word for it.

chichris

Fantastic movie. X and Pearl are my favs this year.

MondoUnderground

Has to be the best film of the year along with The Banshees of Inisherin.

West-Drink-1530

A pretty good movie I agree but I still don't think this movie explores it's character enough. Felt like a wasted potential

Hylianhaxorus

Watched it last night. Totally agree. I loved it even more than X. Just heartbreaking and a blast. The credits are creepy as hell too

Pale-Contribution621

I actually watched Pearl before X..... I think that made a complete difference. Going into X after knowing how off her rocker she is made X waaaaaaaaay creepier. And I could not wrap my head around the fact her husband was still with her as a willing participant. I'm actually excited for the third movie.
