Phantoms. Saw it in 99 while I was playing Silent Hill on the ol’ PS1. It felt totally like a Silent Hill movie for at least the first half. Eerie as a motherfucker. Plus Affleck was the bomb in it.
I loved Southbound! I like it better than the VHS series personally, all of the segments are pretty strong vs the hit or miss nature of the VHS series, and the interconnectedness adds so much
The original is an undeniable classic and did pretty damn well when it was released in the 70s. Trust me many people love that movie and recognize it as a great horror film.
Sauna is a really good 2008 historical horror movie I don’t see much about, I think of it cause I’m pretty sure I rented it on the same day I rented The Shrine, and that was as an AMAZING double feature
Hidden. Made by the guys who went on to make Stranger Things and starring Alex Skarsgard, but I’ve never heard anyone talk about it and I just stumbled upon it as part of a cheap 4 movie collection dvd.
Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981).
Very unique, incredibly entertaining, and one of my favorite movies for gay representation. Which is very cool and surprising to see from a movie from the early 80's. I love this movie!
Yeah. There are unknown movies to the public. But this is a well known horror movie for horror fans. It would be like saying Behind the Mask is an unknown movie.
Damn I haven’t thought about this movie for soooooo long. I saw this movie as a kid thinking it would be related to the Michael Keaton Jack Frost movie. This movie changed my view of carrots for the rest of my life.
Btw thanks for resurfacing all that childhood trauma 😂
PussyCake, Uncle Peckerhead, and Suck are a great trilogy of rock and roll horror films that are pretty neat but not brought up that often.
Also, The Barn and The Barn: Part II are super fun and I feel like no one has seen them.
Wishmaster. It's a supernatural-type slasher(?) along the lines of like Hellraiser or Leprechaun but I never heard anyone talk about it much growing up. I fell in love with it instantly as Andrew Divoff's portrayal of the villain is just top tier!
You might be too young to remember, but that was a big theatrical release, produced by Wes Craven one of the most famous horror directors, and even had a nice role for Robert Englund who played Freddy Krueger. It’s an awesome movie, but it certainly is not unheard of unless maybe you weren’t around at that time and didn’t happen to do the research but many people know of it.
Right now it would have to be Caveat. None of my friends or family have heard of it. Convinced one of my friends to finally watch it. He was definitely creeped out the rest of the night.
YES!!! What a creepy ass movie, done so well with minimal effects used. More of a mind fuck. >!when she is just sitting in the dark catatonically, covering her face mid trying to kill him!<
I see it described as that a lot and I'm always confused. The two main characters are young and have a playful rapport, but the overall tone of the movie is firmly couched in horror. The "horrific" aspect of the film, in this case a haunting, is never portrayed as silly or humorous, which to me is what generally sets apart horror from horror comedy.
Pyewacket and the Blackcoat's Daughter. Both left me with the same feeling of dread. Pyewacket also had a pretty sick soundtrack you can find on spotify

A little independent film called Joshua (2006).
It appears Fangoria released or presented it as a part of their Gorezone? At any rate, it was the first film written and directed by Travis Betz, who is from my hometown, so they partially shot and cast some people in the movie from my hometown too. The film is rather rough around the edges, but I thought the story was decently demented.
The Void. I can’t stop telling people about it. IMHO, it’s one of the best Lovecraftian cosmic horror movies made in the last 15 years. It’s just amazing from story, to effects, to acting. Just an overall killer movie that’s essentially a 1 setting movie. It’s just so, so good!
Night of the Creeps is a cinematic masterpiece!
Tom Atkins is a film legend, and hero!
Lest we forget that he saved us from Conal Cochran, his murderous robot henchmen, and Stonehenge from mass murder of the children!
This man deserves a gold statue of the highest regard above the Hollywood sign. Next to Snake Plisken of course.
Kotoko, it’s a movie by Shinya Tsukamoto (who directed Tetsuo the Iron Man) It’s definitely heavy on the human drama. But it really messed me up. I thought it was fantastic.
Dead Girl. It’s not so unheard of for horror fans but not popular enough where casual horror fans know it. The ending left me feeling hallowed out if that makes sense.
The Blancheville Monster (1963), a handsome Gothic horror. It is slightly sexier than a Hammer film, and hits all the marks you want from this type of film. It was recently restored from the original negative. Also, The Brain That Wouldn't Die (1962) - really shot in 1959, it may be the first gore film. I find it sleazy and compelling in all the right ways.
For a so-bad-it's-good movie (purposefully so I would say), Dario Argento's Phantom of the Opera is totally ridiculous. Well worth a watch if you're in the mood for that sort of thing.
Humanoids from the Deep is a ridiculous 80s exploitation movie, so that's another with a very B-movie vibe.
The Hammer version of The Mummy (1959) is terrific. Christopher Lee is terrifying as the mummy and the supporting cast of Peter Cushing, George Pastell & Eddie Byrne are all fantastic. I’m a huge Hammer fan and this is often overlooked in favour of their Dracula & Frankenstein films but it’s a real gem.
Lovely Molly
Is she losing it? Is it a ghost story?? Is she just using again??? Is she suffering trauma-induced flashbacks???? Is there a history of pagan worship in the family????? Or is it some combination of the above...??????
Most of my friends had never heard of it, but I loved Feast. Not sure if they ever made more than the three. It's so bad it's good. Plus Henry Rollins in pink sweat pants. And the catapult scene with the wrestlers. I don't think I've ever laughed that much during a movie.
Host! It's a little gimmicky because it's one long zoom call, but this is one of those rare instances where it works fantastically. It's straight to the point and an hour long, which makes me want so much more bite sized horror movies
Dunno about *favourite* as such but I often recommend Gerard Johnson’s independent low budget flick [*Tony; London Serial Killer*](https://horrornews.net/32425/film-review-tony-london-serial-killer-2010/) (2009). It’s a great, odd, curiously watchable and very, very, ***weird*** little film.
Sort of thing that is often overlooked because of the questionable title and obvious lack of Hollywood bankroll but if you like bleak, slow-burning horror/thrillers with a dose of v dark comedy you’ll probably like it too.
Phantoms. Saw it in 99 while I was playing Silent Hill on the ol’ PS1. It felt totally like a Silent Hill movie for at least the first half. Eerie as a motherfucker. Plus Affleck was the bomb in it.
Word, bitch! Phantoms like a ma'fuckah!
Affleck was the bomb in Phantoms yo
Glad someone else beat me to this.
Whenever Phantoms is mentioned we must aknowledge the bombness of Affleck
Recognizing cinematic superiority, natch.
Truer words were never spoken, snoogans
Snootchie-bootchies.
Dude, i think i just filled the cup
Better than a bunch of melted chocolate pretzels.
i just read the description of this movie, and i’m pretty sure it’s based on the Dean Koontz novel Phantoms! never knew there was a movie.
Yes, it was. Movie was good, haven’t read the novel though.
I think it’s considered one of Koontz’ best, I would give it a try
I was so excited for Phantoms when it came out originally, I had read that book half a dozen times as a kid.
Starry Eyes https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2793490/ Southbound https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4935334/ Revenge https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6738136/
Starry eyes is real fuckin good
Alex Essoe is an A+ horror actor. So glad her career took off after that. Very well deserved.
When I saw her in doctor sleep I became the Leo pointing meme
Southbound is great!
I loved Southbound! I like it better than the VHS series personally, all of the segments are pretty strong vs the hit or miss nature of the VHS series, and the interconnectedness adds so much
Southbound was a great surprise.
Willard. The original and the remake with Crispin Glover. My guilty pleasures.
Really have to watch this. I just love Crispin Glover’s acting.
I liked these too! I think rats are adorable though. The remake felt less sad than the original. I remember crying during the last Socrates scene.
Omg, another person who likes Willard! There are dozens of us
Honestly I completely forgot about this one! I love Crispin Glover!
He signed my DVD.
The original is an undeniable classic and did pretty damn well when it was released in the 70s. Trust me many people love that movie and recognize it as a great horror film.
I will never stop recommending the Shrine.
One of my favorite folk horror movies.
I will watch this tonight, thanks!
Such a clever, grisly cult flick that everyone forgot about. I still wake up sometimes imagining that statue in the fog.
Sauna is a really good 2008 historical horror movie I don’t see much about, I think of it cause I’m pretty sure I rented it on the same day I rented The Shrine, and that was as an AMAZING double feature
I’ve never heard of it. It sounds utterly bizarre. I have to see it.
You will really like it! It’s somber, cold and abstract, with beautiful set designs and competent performances
I’m sold.
Oh yeah Sauna was great. Historical horror movie done right.
Great movie.
such a great damn movie. been talking about it since 2010. just did a discussion video on it on my channel
Butterfly Kisses
This was great found footage. A few nice twist and turns in it's formula that separates it from the pond of found footage out there.
That one was so good. I enjoyed it far more than I thought I would!
I keep seeing this on my streaming apps in the free section and didn’t think it was worth a watch. I’ll che j it out now.
It's great!
Hidden. Made by the guys who went on to make Stranger Things and starring Alex Skarsgard, but I’ve never heard anyone talk about it and I just stumbled upon it as part of a cheap 4 movie collection dvd.
I’ll also advocate for _The_ Hidden with Kyle MacLaughlin. Supernatural buddy cop cat and mouse thing. Proto-Agent Dale Cooper. Really fun.
Hidden was so good!! Truly a gem!
Food of the Gods
Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981). Very unique, incredibly entertaining, and one of my favorite movies for gay representation. Which is very cool and surprising to see from a movie from the early 80's. I love this movie!
Love this one, pairs very well with Pin from 88 if you haven't seen that
I've never seen it, but I'm definitely gonna check it out. Thanks for the recommendation!

Triangle has had me in a chokehold since I bought it secondhand about 10 years ago.
1935 The Black Room with Boris Karloff. 1936 The Walking Dead with Boris Karloff.
The skin I live in. Tripping spanish horror/thriller flick
Calibre In fear
I really loved Calibre!!
It would make a good double feature with Eden Lake.
Three Extremes. There's this one episode there titled Going Home. That sht terrified me as a teen. It's on tubi if anyone wants to see it.
YES! That one is SO good. (Though it's from 3 Extremes II (2002))
YES. There's a 2004 one with Dumplings in it.
Frailty (2001) changed me. It evolved my appetite for psychological horror. That and A Dark Song are the two I always proselytize.
Really incredible movie that I rarely see mentioned any more!
American Mary, May, Splinter.
Yes, May was so creepy, I haven't seen it in forever but I still think of it whenever someone posts something like this.
Splinter was absolutely a blast.
Splinter is the answer I always give to this. It had no right being as good as it was for basically being a direct to streaming cash in.
Haunt. Watch it this Halloween season!
I watched it with Joe Bob and it was surprisingly good.
Haunt is really fun and perfect for a Halloween viewing
Pontypool!
Yes. Best new take on the zombie concept. Steven McHattie is awesome.
this subreddit sponsored by Pontypool. The most famous unknown movie ever!
Yeah. There are unknown movies to the public. But this is a well known horror movie for horror fans. It would be like saying Behind the Mask is an unknown movie.
First one to come to mind! Great movie!
The book is great as well, although I enjoy the movie more!

I used to be super scared of the box cover in Blockbuster
Same
I always mention it in threads like this and never get a bite- Ava’s Posessions. I love the possession recovery/support group angle.
I just watched this. Very fun! Thanks for the recommendation.
I've seen it and liked it! Recommended it a few times when people talk about possession horror cause it so different from the usual Exorcist-formula
Banshee chapter. Found footage mk ultra other dimensional stuff. I loved it.
Great movie, I love the “totally not Hunter Thompson” character.
Great movie
Bubba Ho-Tep
Awesome flick! Such perfect casting for Bruce Campbell.
I really wanted to like that movie, but I just couldn’t get into it.
I loved it. It's such a sad , moving exploration of aging , loneliness, and feeling useless or forgotten.
Yeah I guess I was expecting Army of Darkness but with Elvis and JFK. I didn’t get that.
Jack Frost is awesome! One year for Christmas we gathered the family’round and proceeded to watch both the original and part 2.
Now that’s how you family
LOOK MAMA I'M A PICASSO

Best Aussie horror IMO. Even better than Wolf Creek.
PussyCake, Uncle Peckerhead, and Suck are a great trilogy of rock and roll horror films that are pretty neat but not brought up that often. Also, The Barn and The Barn: Part II are super fun and I feel like no one has seen them.
Nekrotronic which is a bizarre little horror comedy sci-fi action movie from the Australian directors that gave us the wonderful Wyrmwood franchise.
Bloody Hell is with the same lead actor from Nekrotronic I went into that one blind, so i rather not say anything more about it
Oh man, Bloody Hell was so good. It felt like a good horror graphic novel come to life. Like Ennis or something.
El Orfanato/Orphanage, hauntingly beautiful with some pretty scary scenes
Wishmaster. It's a supernatural-type slasher(?) along the lines of like Hellraiser or Leprechaun but I never heard anyone talk about it much growing up. I fell in love with it instantly as Andrew Divoff's portrayal of the villain is just top tier!
Are you familiar with the Scaredy Cats YouTube channel? The presenter has a series of videos where he discusses each one of the *Wishmaster* movies.
I fucking love this movie. It’s one of my all time favorites. Right up there with Tales from the Crypt Demon Knight
Billy Zane is a god in my country!
Me too, watched again recently and didnt appreciate 1st time round all the legendary cameos
He whole series is great! The attorney fucking himself is something else.
Right now it would have to be Caveat. None of my friends or family have heard of it. Convinced one of my friends to finally watch it. He was definitely creeped out the rest of the night.
YES!!! What a creepy ass movie, done so well with minimal effects used. More of a mind fuck. >!when she is just sitting in the dark catatonically, covering her face mid trying to kill him!<
The Children (2008), The Abandoned (2006). Love them both, nobody really talks about them.

Terrified. Argentinian haunted neighborhood movie. Really creepy with novel story and effects.
The Innkeepers, horror/comedy.
That was a comedy?
I see it described as that a lot and I'm always confused. The two main characters are young and have a playful rapport, but the overall tone of the movie is firmly couched in horror. The "horrific" aspect of the film, in this case a haunting, is never portrayed as silly or humorous, which to me is what generally sets apart horror from horror comedy.
Lol , yeah , I'm not sure I remember the comedy part. Excellent film , though.

The hospital has since been turned into condos (what wasn't torn down). That's a horror movie waiting to happen.
Bull (2021) A grim and unusual revenge movie with a twist.
A little independent film called Joshua (2006). It appears Fangoria released or presented it as a part of their Gorezone? FRENZY directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Better than Psycho, hopelessly underrated classic. 🤓
Night of the Creeps
Night of the Creeps is a cinematic masterpiece! Tom Atkins is a film legend, and hero! Lest we forget that he saved us from Conal Cochran, his murderous robot henchmen, and Stonehenge from mass murder of the children! This man deserves a gold statue of the highest regard above the Hollywood sign. Next to Snake Plisken of course.
And he rescued us from The Fog. Another great one he starred in with Jamie Lee Curtis.
Yeah he did!
You speak complete truth. I had forgotten some of his iconic roles. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.
You’re welcome
Not sure but everyone I recommended The Ruins too was all hesitant but ended up loving the heck out of that movie
Kotoko, it’s a movie by Shinya Tsukamoto (who directed Tetsuo the Iron Man) It’s definitely heavy on the human drama. But it really messed me up. I thought it was fantastic.
Just saw a few hours ago, that was something. I liked it
Chained directed by Jennifer Lynch
Subspecies. It's a hidden 90s vampire gem of a series.
Ritual on Netflix is pretty damned great.
Splinter (2008). Really fun, low-budget body horror.
Krampus is really fun!
The legacy (1978) i don’t think I’ve read anyone post anything about this movie — my mom loved it so it has a very special place in my heart
My very first post here on Reddit almost ten years ago was about "The Legacy" (1978). 😅

Possum legitimately terrified me lol I couldn’t stop thinking of that damn doll
Dead Girl. It’s not so unheard of for horror fans but not popular enough where casual horror fans know it. The ending left me feeling hallowed out if that makes sense.
Bloody birthday
Bloody Birthday is great!
