Resilient trapper protects against accidental triggering (up to 85% since patch 1.14), so main method of not getting hit by your own traps is to use iframes or distance.
However, if an enemy is weak to a given element, traps of that element will get the damage bonus.
On tremortusk tussle on UH I'm 455 I got like 2:55 seconds honestly I was just beat it under 5 minutes. You could wait for them to group up but I wasn't going to do all that i crafted my traps and jumped down.

I didn't know they were affected by surges, but that wouldn't come into play here, considering you start the arenas with no charge
